Flashing Stock 4.4 FTF on SGP321 - Xperia Tablet Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
I am using Australian Tablet Z LTE 16GB version (SGP321) and running on the 4.3 and wanted to try 4.4. This is want I doing now.
1. Downloaded SGP321_4.4 10.5.A.0.230_CE1 1272-8686 from one the threads here
2. Downloaded Sony Emma
3. Registered an user and waiting approval
In the meantime, I have few questions to clarify.
1. Will flashing this German version affect my future OTA(s) if any???
2. Should I be worried about anything else?
3. Is there any other tool other EMMA, I can use?
I searched the XDA and not able to find answers exactly.

1- Is your bootloader unlocked?
2- is the ftf modified in any way?

1. Bootloader is still locked. But I OK to unlock it
2. I think it's unmodified

If you keep your bootloader locked and the ftf is not heavily modified you can continue to update through OTA.

I forgot to answer your other questions,
1- you can still receive ota updates as I said in the previous post. But you will only receive update for the German version (unless you take some additional steps) backup your sdcard and know that all your apps will be deleted
2- just makes sure you know how to flash an ftf. Exclude the ta partition if it exists in the ftf that you have obtained before flashing.
3- actually I think the right tool to use is called flashtool http://www.flashtool.net/index.php

OTA update to 6.1.A.2.45 for rooted Xperia S with unlocked bootloader

I have a rooted Xperia S with unlocked bootloader, by following instructions on this thread.
Today I received a notification about OTA update to 6.1.A.2.45 (40MB in size) and I was wondering if I can apply this update without loosing root. I really did search for an answer on the forum before making this post and couldn't find anything specific for my phone, but what I did found only confused me more, which is to be expected since I am a noob. Apparently it worked for some users of Xperia Play with unlocked bootloader, but on the other hand some users of Xperia Arc S say that bootloader should be locked when making an OTA update.
I would really appreciate any help from more experienced members, I'm new in Android and don't want to start by bricking my phone.
Thank you for your time and effort.
Boom
better dont, you will end up with a bricked device. NEVER accept OTA updates if your bootloader is unlocked.
Don't update with PCC when you're unlocked.
Wow, that was fast! Thank you guys.
hi, did you find how to update?

i also have an open bootloader although not root, but i tried updating using the phone's OTA and PCC and neither worked. I promptly realized it might just be the open bootloader which is keeping me from updating, so how do we manually update? if you have any procedures will highly appreciate anyone..... thanks in advance

You can find your regions FW. (firmware) and download it, after that download and install flashtool, and flash the .ftf file via flashtool and that is it.
thanks for the quick reply

i did a fast search and found this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=31011440#post31011440
they have some firmwares there, but they seem to be full updates, because they are 300+mb while the update on my phone its only 40mb.
so should i just download the generic and proceed to flash?

Hmmm,
Slightly different scenario here.
I have a rooted xperia S with a locked bootloader and obviously want to preserve root.
Previous experience tells me that a PC update from SEUS does a full wipe of the phone and looses root however OTA updates usually preserve root. I was hoping somebody could clarify if this is still the case?
Thanks
if your bootloaders unlocked you cant update ota or via seus. it will just give an error about your device being modified

there is a rom somewhere in another forum i guess which already is updated and rooted. so you might want to just download that one and flash it. it has its own kernel and recovery.

I've not been on much recently at all so I could be wrong, but I'm sure it's been said that you can flash ROM such as the linked one when bootloader is locked and perhaps the pre-rooted one too. May need to search the thread.
Nothing out there that allows me to root my Xperia S on ICS without wiping my data though I think. One can wait... or dream. :[

Yeah having too wipe at this point is a bummer. If I'm going to wipe my phone ill wait for the ability to unlock my locked bootloader.
Problem with that is I will most likely have a new phone by then.

[Q] noob questions

hi All, good day. Sorry just a noob. Ive tried to read the whole thread and cant find an answer to the follwing questions. Hope you can help me.
1. Is there a posibillity of losing an network signal when flasing a custom Rom?
2. when i root my device, is there a posibility that the X-reality engine will not work properly?
3. ive read that the device can be rooted even if the bootloader is locked. If i decided to unroot it again, can we do that?
4. is there a flash counter in xperia devices just like in samsung where in you can see if the waranty has been breached already or not?
5. can we turn the device to its original state again after rooting, unlocking and flashing custom roms?
6. if device is rooted, can we still install new updates from Sony thru OTA?
thanks,
Have a great day!

Yes you can unroot just by flashing a Stock Sony ftf over the current one via flashtool. Preferably the same firmware( without wiping)
Also, there is no flash counter in Xperia. If you have a locked bootloader and it is unrooted, there is no way to tell if you have unlocked or rooted

Thank you so much Sir. Sorry i got two new questions.
1. Is there a specific FTF file per region? im an Asian. and when i search for latest firmware. i only got C6833_14.3.A.0.757_CE.rar
2. Ive noticed that NFC Service always turned on even if i turned it OFF. When i check battery stats, its the second app that eats most of my battery. its next to screen. Do you have same issue?
Can you please not post then same question in two or three threads

No problems with NFC here.
There are different ftfs for different regions. But that's not a problem. You can flash any region's ftf for your specific model number. If your model is 6833, then download any .757 c6833 ftf and flash it. Have a nice day

[Q] upgrading firmware but unlocked bootloader

hi,
I started this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z2/help/upgrading-55-to-314-t2860394
but ran into an issue. Since I didn't get any updates on that thread, I thought I would make a post dedicated to the problem I'm running into.
basically while attempting to upgrade to .314 using PC Companion I get
The phone tablet contains modified software that cannot be updated
Sony Updated Engine failure (error 2003)
Click to collapse
with some research it appears that this is because i unlocked my bootloader.
Questions:
is my conclusion correct? or is this because of something else?
if correct, what is the recommended course of action here? relock bootloader and update using companion PC or decrypt FTF files and flash using flashtool?
If i relock bootloader using flashtool, will it wipe my phone data?
I've found the firmware files on my computer (C:\ProgramData\Sony Mobile\Update Engine\db\13740270\blob_fs) If i decrypt these with flashtool and use them to update firmware, will it wipe my data?
Thanks
You can update via flashtool without looking data. Flash ftf file and check system only and uncheck wipe. Re- locking bootloader will wipe your phone. Your assumption is correct m8. You can't update your phone with pc companion because of your unlocked bootloader. Happy flashing m8

Its takes a while but felt more comfortable than just some random dl.

What do i want to check and what do i want to leve unchecked?
do you mean that all the check boxes under WIPE should be empty

sweet. upgraded and rooted using "Easy Root Tool" (was super easy!) :good:
for others discovering this post i've attached a screenshot of what my flashmode tool looked like:
basically under WIPE make sure DATA is unchecked. you will notice that userdata.sin disappears from content list
under exclude make sure nothing is checked.
win.
@[w] Hey m8, glad to see everything went ok Now you are all set to go and mod to your heart's content:highfive: Thanks for posting the screen shot and explanation as a reference for noobs/Sh*tsung refugees to see how the Flashtool screen should look during upgrading. [Q] [HOW TO ROOT] [23.0.1.A.3.9] FW on Sony Xperia™ Z2? (Android 4.4.4)

Hi ;
I use http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z2/general/firmware-23-0-1-3-9-xperia-z2-ftf-t2932452 this FTF and have 23.0.1.A.3.9 software.
How can we root this version ? Any easy method ?
Thank you.
Locked bootloader
1. Downgrade to 4.4.2,
2. Root and install recovery,
3. Flash rooted 4.4.4 zip through recovery
Unlocked bootloader
1. Unlock bootloader,
2. Flash kernel with recovery,
3. Flash Superuser zip through recovery
That's about it until a vulnerability has been found

BTW: you shouldn't flash that firmware, it's for o2 Germany only. It's basically the same as the other 4.4.4 firmwares just with a lot of bloatware and changes to o2 network.

[Q] Newbie here and I need a little help

Hi
First time using android phone. I just got a Z2 D6503 model with 5.0.2 Lollipop android (in the UK), build number: 23.1.A.1.28. I would like to root my phone as some apps need to the phone to be rooted in order to work properly. So can you guys please suggest any that I can read on?
Also, I saw some posts around said that you should not mess up with bootloader (a partition which holds Sony's special features according to my narrow knowledge). As I just started to use the phone, is there anything I need to know so I don't **** my phone up in the first place, which many newbies did, 'cause I have no backup phone at the moment. Just send me some thing to read. Any help will be appreciated.
Additionally, is the stock rom of Z2 good enough? Or I should flash some other cooked rom? I don't need fancy things, just an efficient system that helps me do the work.
Thank you very much for your patience!
Cheers!
Congratulations on your new Z2!

Hi
I followed this guide here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z2/general/root-t3108230 to root my phone but it seems not to work.
Do you have a solid guide to root a Z2 phone? And how to backup all of my data before doing that?
OK, I have XZdual recovery 2.8 installed on my Z2, I check root using root checker and it said the phone was rooted successfully. Using ROM manager from clockmod, I also see that I have the recoveries installed. However, when I turn off the phone and on again, it does vibrate at press, then after Sony logo shows up, a red LED flash, I cant get to recovery by either pressing up and down buttons several times. What is wrong with my recovery?

Superb! Sorry, the rom was too messy, I chose to reflash my phone OS (using flash tool) and now it is in Lollipop 5.0.2, Now what should I do next to first root, then install recovery. When I try to root the phone after flashing using flash tool, it failed to complete the task, said:
21/032/2015 16:32:46 - INFO - Running rootit

21/033/2015 16:33:47 - INFO - Cleaning files.
I'm in 5.0.2, build 23.1.A.1.28, the phone just auto updated after I reflash the rom
Now I need a solid root to install recovery.
What you should do is keep reading.
I only got a Z2 recently, I read everything and downgraded to 4.4.2 to root it without unlocking the boot loader. Then I backed up my TA partition in case I decide to go custom. After that I flashed it back to 5.0.2 keeping root.
I managed to do all of that by reading the information already provided. Stop being so bloody lazy.

I´ve bought a used z2 rooted and with the 4.4.4 existenz.
But I want to use lollipop, I used it on my previous Z and I was very happy with it.
If I use the sony companion repair option, will I get the lollipop or a dead z2? :cyclops:
thank you

If you want to keep root and ROM + getting 5.0.2, download the
eXistenz 2.0 zip and flash from recovery. If not, you can flash a stock 5.0.2 ROM via Flashtool.

21/032/2015 16:32:47 - INFO - Waiting for device. After 60secs, stop waiting will be forced
21/033/2015 16:33:47 - INFO - Forced stop waiting.
21/033/2015 16:33:47 - ERROR - The part1 exploit did not work
21/033/2015 16:33:47 - INFO - Cleaning files.
I'm in 5.0.2, build 23.1.A.1.28, the phone just auto updated after I reflash the rom
Now I need a solid root to install recovery.

This is because lollipop is currently not rootable. You have to downgrade to Kitkat and followed the guide to upgrade to lollipop.

I remember that in flashtool thread, the author said that only few rom were named are not rootable. I downloaded the first one whih isn't in the list, so rooatble means downgradeable and rootable from 4.4 right?

Yes it is you can find firmwares here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2759934.
At each version, you can see if it is rootable or not

Ok. I'm getting confused at this point. The ones with red "NO ROOT" are not rootable and the one without it is rootable right? Also which 4.4 kit kat version should I download?

Flash from recovery, is that the option that I have when I press the power button and choose restart?
I´ve never done it before, I just have to put the zip file in the sd card and choose the recovery option?

Yes it is. You put the zip file on the SD card and shut off your phone. When you restart the phone again, it will vibrate and the led will light up, press the volume down button a couple of times and then chose the option "install zip", or something similar. Find the zip file you placed on your SD card and select it for flashing/installing

Do I need to clean my sd card or I can put the file there leaving all the rest? And when it updates to 5.0.2 am I going to loose my data?
Now about the zip file, my contry is Portugal, does that have anything to do with the rom version?
I'm looking for the correct zip file but this is all too new for me

You can place it where you like, without wiping any data!
Use either this: https://mega.co.nz/#!QZc23YbK!gi5mrwEQNA63565s3BCaeQrYiRkt0pd_HNmb_K16e8E or this http://www.mediafire.com/download/0b8828828cmf58c/Xperia_Z2_eXistenZ_Y_v2.0.0.zip for download
Since you already are on eXistenz, you do NOT have to wipe data, and therefore won't lose anything
