I tried to flash a ROM a while back, and it messed up my phone. When turning it on and not doing anything else, it gets stuck on the white HTC One screen (with the Beats logo at the bottom). If I hold the power and volume down button, it vibrates, displays the Quietly Brilliant screen, goes black, and does it again and again. There doesn't seem to be a way to turn it off, except to let the battery die.
I tried to run this RUU:
RUU M7 UL JB 50 Cingular US 1.26.502.12 Radio 4A.14.3250.13 10.33.1150.01 Release 318450 Signed 2
and it gives me error 170 (USB connection error). When plugged in to the computer, it shows up as a CD drive, and I can't really find anything relevant in the device manager.
What should I do?

Thank you! I'm not too familiar with fastboot, but when I did the command, it was stuck on "waiting for device".

Did you install any other ROM aside from the official ROM code?
I installed the Modaco Rom 2 weeks ago, and it worked fine all the time
Damn, I'll guess it's bricked if nobody knows the answer...

I guess I also had a similar issue this morning when I was trying to root my phone and it was stuck at 41% while updating ROM. I just did it again after plugging out the USB Cable and running the Ruu.exe and it updated the ROM within 5 mins. I guess in my case it was a case of my Windows getting hung (I was running it within Mac using Parallels), and it just worked after inserting the USB cable again.
Try running the update from another computer (after installing HTC Sync on that ..)
Good luck!
Hi guys, I have exactly the same problem.
One night the volume button would not work. So i rebooted to fix the problem. It rebooted into HBOOT. The screen with the 3 skateboards?
I only get two options
<Back> Fastboot Mode
The back button does not trigger fastboot!!
<Send> Simlock
Doing this only says
FAT32 Init Ok
Open File Fail
Reboot Device?
<Menu> Reset Device
I do so but it reboots directly into hboot again.
It also does a SD card check when it boots up onto this screen, says something like
herodiag.zip
etc etc
and it says not found i think, it goes very fast.
Anyway I am very frustrated. I was using Modacos 3.0. Without many problems.
I have a bad feeling that my phone is bricked.
Any help would be much appreciated.
And yes I have already tried countless combinations of button presses, all still go back to the skateboard screen.

this may sound like a silly comment, but to me it sounds like your VOlume Down button is stuck.
anyone else with a perfectly working hero can try this.
no matter what combination of buttons you press, if you have volume down pressed, it goes into hboot (or it seems to on mine, anyway)
O ok, any idea how I can sort of unstick it?
Seems like a good explanation.
on my cdma hero, following the directions i found online everywhere(hold home and boot) i was getting a HBOOT screen with only an option to erase all settings until i:
1. pop battery
2. reboot while holding vol-down, back arrow and power button
3. this time at the HBOOT screen there is an option to enter recovery mode(i think with a home press) fastboot or simlock
moisture in your HTC hero
It's possible that your 'volume down'-button is stuck because of moisture in you hero. I had the same problem. You have to warm your hero with warm air. CAUTION, make your hero NOT TOO HOT.
Hi guys, I am feeling really nervous about this... So, the problem is, that I've just rooted my HTC GSM Hero and installed 2.2 ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=767886). Then I downloaded this app http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=892297. There I chose wrong icon (I didn't notice the icon was for FroydVillain) and rebooted device... Now I can't boot device into normal mode (it shows hero for a while, then turns into black screen, and nothing more happens) or recovery mode (it stucks when it shows HERO). I tried this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4467471&postcount=13 but it didn't work. I'm a complete beginner. Any ideas? Is my device really bricked? THANKS.

Stay calm... it's not necessarily bricked yet
First thing i would like you to do is charge your phone to max!
Try and turn on the phone and hold to "On" key and "Home" key together for 60 seconds. If this doesn't boot you to recovery, try again one more time! It's happened to me that i didn't realise the button wasn't pressed all the way down.
If that doesn't work then let it boot as normal and even though it goes to the black screen don't panic.
Do you have any of the android tools installed?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=502010
See there for help on how to get adb up and running and then come back here.
Another thing i'm curious about while we're here... when you boot the device as normal.. connect it to power, the orange (or green) led at the top should be off for a few seconds while the hero boots up... when it goes to this black screen that you see.. does the light come on?

When my phone is off, the led is red. When I see that black screen, it is off... Is that bad??
Not necessarily.. it could just mean that it's not finishing it's boot up... let it charge for a while.
Your phone is most likely fine. You just confused it so it can't start up normally. We'll get you back in recovery mode and then you can reinstall your 2.2 rom.

Yes, I have ADB, but when I type adb devices, it only writes: "List of devices attached" (does that mean that it recognize my phone?)
I'm not sure I know what RRU is

Yes, it finds HEROIMG,zip, then loads it, then checks it, and adter that nothing happens - the phone still doesn't boot.
ok, volume down key response is good
ADB apears not to discover Your phone, probably drivers problem ;/
Look for RRU file it's used for factory reseting entire phone.
You can download it from HTC.com site.

EDIT: go to htc.com site. look for downlaoding software for Your phone. You will have to provide Your imei. and You will receive .exe file - that You will have to run on Your PC. You can also look for it on this forum, they should be around here somewhere (or perhaps shipped roms.com)

Maybe there's some way to flash my recovery img via hboot (POWER + VOLUME DOWN)?
Try downloading usbdeview HERE plug the phone in,turn it on,leave it for 10-15 seconds for windows to recognize it...load usbdeview and uninstall and delete anything with android, htc, mass storage or adb in it thats showing as connected (on the right hand side) unplug phone......then download and install HTC Sync HERE let it install, then reboot (to be safe) plug the phone in and let its do its business,DONT let windows search and direct it to program files/htc sync/drivers (or similar) you should then have adb! If you dont it could be a problem with your misc.img i had this with my magic and fixed it with a post on this forum but will post it up if the first bit doesnt work
Any troubles gtalk me [email protected]

I solved this problem! I just put the correct RUU in my sdcard and named it HEROIMG.zip and then turned on hboot - it flashed the RUU and now I got my phone alive! thanks for your help guys
Sent from my Hero using XDA App
I was using pac-rom but I wanted to go back to stock. However, I couldn't revert back to stock. So I read up and found out I needed to do RUU.
Instead of it booting properly, it goes to the htc splash (With the red text at the bottom, but it isn't entering recovery mode) and after that, it goes to a black screen. After a couple of minutes, it simply loops back to the splash.
What I was trying to do was use RUU, but of course, i was s-on and attempts to s-off the device failed. So I used htc1guru's RUU exe (I think I downloaded the wrong file, wasnt supposed to use the exe, but flash a stock rom. I know, I know, I'm stupid, don't really remember what i was thinking.) and now the device is stuck like this. I tried adb devices to try and see if it could still connect to the computer, but nothing came up. Doing the light trick either doesn't help a whole lot.
Any ideas what to do?
EDIT: successfully flashed a reset. Had to hold power, vol up + down buttons, wait for it to turn off and quickly hold power and vol down. I then flashed the guru reset Rom and I am now at stock.
This happened this moring for no apparent reason, i moved a file for a game to be installed (final fantasy iv) in the android/oob folder and rebooted, and it never fully did.
Im stuck on the HTC logo forever.
At 1st i said to myself, lets go to hboot and make a factory reset, so i pressed volume - and power, and when i did, instead of restoring the device (wich was unlocked and rooted) it went back to the neverending htc logo, and it does the same for the recovery and the erase everything one, so from that point i tried installing a few firmwares from my carrier which is videotron, and it alway failed either because the signature is not compatible or simply because the device is not detected... it seems to get worst try by try...
I also tried to install from the sd card, adb or Amaze_All-In-One_Kit_V5.1 and 4.0.
Nothing works, please help me.
I just bought this phone used a month ago, and i loved it, and its unfair for it to die for no serious reason.

If it went to the HTC logo, you probably accidentally bypassed the recovery.
Turn the phone off, remove battery wait 10 seconds, install battery, wait 10 seconds, hold the volume DOWN button, while holding the volume DOWN button, press and release the power button. Keep holding the volume DOWN button until the bootloader screen appears, and then release it.
See what you can do with that.
If it doesn't help, find the RUU for your carrier--there's a list of RUU's in General section, "They're all here now" thread, and find the instructions for properly renaming it and placing it where it needs to go to have it install.
Recently my DNA has been getting laggy and restarting occasionally, and yesterday after sending a simple text message it decided to enter a reboot-loop that I think is probably fatal.
When I plug it in to any power, it turns on, shows the white/green HTC screen, and then immediately shuts down, and repeats the cycle. I have not been able to get it to turn off (while on power), and cannot turn it on (even into the loop) while off power. HOWEVER, I CAN use the vol - shortcut to get to the bootloader screen BUT I cannot select anything, as it immediately shuts down when I try to do something.
My DNA is running the latest stock software (OTA from Verizon, i think 4.4.2), and i have not modified it (S-ON, unrooted etc...).
Any and all help would be appreciated!
Bonus: on the 95% chance it is dead, should i go moto x/droid turbo or stick with a *gasp* iphone 5 for 2 months until gs6/htc m9?

I can not get it to receive any signals from me in the bootloader as it shuts down immediately. I tried connecting it to my computer for use with adb, but fastboot WAS enabled and developer tools were DISABLED (i think), plus it cannot keep a constant connection, so that wasn't working.
After doing some research I think I can save it IF I can get it to a stable state from the one it is currently in, and then using the bootloader screen to do a factory reset ( or use
"adb reboot recovery"), but like I said that is depenednet on getting it to stop the boot loop.
I also tried doing something called an RUU (I have limited knowledge of this, i sued the dottat one), but since it cannot establish a constant connection, it did not work.
Im open to any suggestions at this point! Thanks
I seem to have posted my reply in haste.
I have installed the "minimal adb and fastboot" tool that was suggested for basic fastboot use. Fastboot will not recognize it when I use "fastboot devices".
I did install the HTC drivers a while ago, but I suspect they may not work, could that be the issue? I am running win 8.1.
Thanks

You are right unfortunately, I can absolutley not stay in the bootloader with any sort of stability. I read on another thread that opening it up and disconnecting the battery from the motherboard would help, so thats what I did. As soon as I sealed it back up, the reboot-loop started right up again. My guess is that the motherboard is fried, its either that or the battery is holding no charge whatsoever.
If the board is fried, im done right?
if its the battery, is there any way to manually charge not going through the board?
Thanks for all your help btw!
