Root your Galaxy Star
WHAT IS ANDROID ROOTING?
Android rooting is the process of allowing users of smartphones, tablets, and other devices running the Android mobile operating system to attain privileged control (known as "root access") within Android's sub-system.
Rooting is often performed with the goal of overcoming limitations that carriers and hardware manufacturers put on some devices, resulting in the ability to alter or replace system applications and settings, run specialized apps that require administrator-level permissions, or perform other operations that are otherwise inaccessible to a normal Android user. On Android, rooting can also facilitate the complete removal and replacement of the device's operating system, usually with a more recent release of its current operating system.
HOW TO ROOT YOUR SAMSUNG GALAXY STAR S5282 OR S5280
Well, there are several methods to root this device, choose which seems to be comfortable for you
METHOD 1
Its best and safest method to root this device but this method works with only some of the firmwares. So first give it a try, If it doesnt work for you, then try other methods
i) Download Cydia Impactor tool from here
ii) Enable USB debugging in device.
iii) Now,choose puch supersu su binary to /system/xbin
iv) Click on push, and voila your device is rooted.
v) Download Superuser from playstore
METHOD 2
Its the easiest of the method but main drawback of this method is that you have to download file of large size.
i) Download pre-rooted firmware from here
ii) Make sure your device is switched off.
iii) Download Odin 3.07 from here
iv) Now, Boot into Download Mode,Press and Hold Volume Down+Home Button+Power Button together.
v) You should see a warning , Press Volume Up and continue (Don’t worry about any warning).
vi) Launch Odinv3.07.exe file from the extract folder of Odin.zip file. Connect your device to PC with USB cable.
vii) Wait until Odin show Added message in lower left message box in Odin and also ID:COM turns yellow.
viii) After your device is detected by Odin , Click on PDA button given in Odin.
ix) Select the pre_rooted_system.tar file from the extracted folder of Pre-Rooted Firmware you download above.
x) Click on Start button and flashing process will start.
xi) Now your device will reboot automatically.
Thats it… Your Samsung Galaxy Star is rooted now…
METHOD 3
I think, its the best method as you have to download only some small files and its 100% working method
i) Flash CWM Recovery (Follow below procedure)
ii) Select Install zip from sd card.
iii) Select update SuperSU.zip.
iv) Click yes.
v) Reboot your phone now. Voila! Your device is rooted now
Note: All these methods require usb drivers to be installed in your pc, you can download usb drivers from here

WHAT IS CWM RECOVERY
ClockworkMod Recovery
ClockworkMod Recovery (CWM) is a replacement recovery option for Android devices, made by Koushik "Koush" Dutta. It is based on the Android 2.1 (Eclair) recovery image. Features include Nandroid backup, adb shell, advanced update.zip options (ignore asserts and signature checks), and file browser for choosing update.zips
The Rom Manager app may be used for installing CWM, overwriting the device's stock recovery. As with the stock recovery, CWM can apply software changes to the device. Unlike the stock recovery, CWM is able to entirely replace the device's primary Android operating system ("flashing a new ROM"), including with aftermarket replacements such as CyanogenMod. Once installed, CWM it is accessed by turning your phone off, then triggering the bootloader prompt by holding down some device-dependent button combination as it is turned on.
CWM is also known as clockwork and CW recovery.
PROCEDURE -
1. Install USB drivers from here
2. Download ODIN v3.07 from here
3. Download and extract the ClockworkMod tar file from HERE
4. Boot phone into ODIN mode. Forget? ( Press Volume Down + Home Key + Power key simultanaeously)
5. Connect your device to your PC via USB
6. Flash the tar file using ODIN v3.07
Enjoy!
Note - In some of the devices key combo doesnt work so you can fix it easily from here

WHAT IS CUSTOM ROM?
A custom ROM is one that has undergone any modification from being a pure distribution of Android. Google make the Android source code available for anyone to play around with, and people take this code and alter it for themselves. Whether to add features they come up with, or to redistribute it with fun tweaks and additions. So a custom ROM can range in definition from some custom code modifications to make Android run better on a device, all the way to changing the homescreen, background services, and default software.
GENERAL PROCEDURE FOR FLASHING ANY ROM ON S5282
i) Put rom zip in extsd (Memory Card)
ii) Boot To recovery using key combination(Volume UP+ Home + Power), adb or thru some app.
iii) Do Factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache
iv) Flash rom by choosing option of Install zip from sd card and then select ROM zip file.
v) Now, Flash any other fix.zip file which is given by ROM dev.
vi) Now, Select Reboot System now
Enjoy the ROM!

WHAT IS STOCK FIRMWARE
This is the operating system in its default form, without any modifications made to it except for any device-specific support required to run it on the particular device. Truly stock firmware provides the standard user experience of the operating system without any cosmetic or functional changes made. These days, truly stock firmware is primarily found in cases where both the device and the operating system is built by the same company. Amongst modern mobile devices, examples of truly stock firmware can be found on Apple’s iOS devices, Palm’s WebOS devices and some Android devices shipped without any modifications made to the operating system by their manufacturers.
PROCEDURE
i) Download stock firmware from here & EXTRACT IT
ii) Download Odin 3.07 from here
iii) Then connect your mobile to PC in download mode(Volume UP + Home + Power)
iv) Press Volume UP
v) Open Odin 3.07 and the box will turn blue after you connect your device.
vi) Click on PDA and select the .tar file of stock rom
vii) Click Start
viii) Your phone would be restarted automatically.
Congrats! You are on stock

@Niku-Droid nice idea..
and here's some suggestions.. hope you don't mid :fingers-crossed:
* revert the font size of the disclamier/warning and the other texts.. the warning is in smallest text and other text are way too big.. it's good to use red for warning.. also, yellow texts on white aren't easily readable.. just stick to black, blue, red and maybe one/two other colors..
* while users shoul be allowed to choose whatever rooting method they use, also provide a recomended method to which is easy and convenient
in our case, cwm method.. cydia won't work on newer firmwares. so on cydia and pre rooted firmwares, they will have do download and flash 450+mb of file with odin.. whilst they can download 9mb of cwm just to get root..
* the dl link of cwm recovery you have provided is old one.. it wipes whole, /data partion when wiping data, so all the internal memory is lost.. the updated recovery also, allows installing zip files from internal memory... please suggest to use this updated, cwm recovery instead of the old one.. [Updated Recovery] CWM 6.0.3.7 for GT-S5282 and GT-S5280
* some of these phone have problem of not being able to boot into recovery with ( Volume Down + Home Key + Power key).. it would be good to point them to this thread, [GT-S5282] Fix Recovery Key Combo Problem for Galaxy Star Duos

did you miss samsung usb drivers in method 1 and 2. it's needed for all 3 methods.. so just say.. make sure you install usb drivers before any method..
also link to usb drivers.. people are just lazy to use google @[email protected]
and the cwm method needs some more steps for first time.. battery pulling and flashing fix.zip..

Giving u all the thanx i can
Now i can just give ppl the thread link instead of telling all the steps again and again

@Niku-Droid
flashing CWM for first time with Odin needs a little more steps.. if anyone just flashes, stock recovery will be installed again.. and i'm too lazy to write complete steps..
* power off wait for 10 secs
* boot into stock recovery with key combo
* pull out battery, put batter back
* boot into download mode connect to pc
* flash tar file with odin.. normal PDA flash, checkboxes are cute but don't touch 'em.
* it will auto reboot into cwm, now flash fix-recovery.zip with cwm..
* power off from cwm
* boot again to recovery with key combo to see if working..

okay.. just checked..
the fix-recovery.zip files deletes install-recovery.sh in /system/etc.... but the file is not present in latest stock firmware... it is used to check hash of recovery partition at every boot and flash stock recovery if it changed.. this is to replace any custom recovery like cwm or twrp with stock recovery for an OTA update..
so i guess sammy insn't planning any OTA for galaxy star/duos.. :silly:

[RECOVERY][18.06.2012] ClockWorkMod Recovery 5.5.0.4 - "v1.5"

I am no longer supporting this version of CF-Root. I have personally moved away from permanent custom recoveries. I will still be providing roots by way of CF-Auto-Root (click). The downloads in this thread will remain available, I just won't be updating them.
.
.
.
.
.
If you just want to get your device rooted ASAP, see this thread instead: CF-Root. It includes this recovery in it's installation, and automatically installs root. This thread is for the recovery only.
Check your device model ! Settings -> About device -> Model number. This stuff is made for the GT-I9300 and GT-I9300T, if your model number has a suffix, it may not work, or if it is a totally different model, it will not work (may even brick) !
Not compatible with ROM Manager ! Use the CWM Manager provided instead.
Here's my port of CWM 5.5.0.4 to the SGS3. There's a second version number in the thread title, as I think there will be multiple versions.
As is the case with every SGS release (it happened with the SGS1 and the SGS2, and now again with the SGS3), CWM source isn't built to correctly deal with our setup (internal storage vs sdcard). I had to make a number of changes to the source to get it working correctly. From my tests, it all seems to work, but it's quite possible I missed something (report issues).
(I have tested backup/restore to both internal and external storage, wipes, installing zips from both internal and external, etc, all works as I expect it to)
Aside from the base fixes, there is currently nothing fancy about this build of CWM. I'm not sure if the SGS3 suffers from the brick bug (that SGS2 and Note have), but I patched out the relevant code to be sure (I think). Backups are rather big, system alone is about a GB.
I'll do more some other day!
Instructions - Short
Extract the attached CF-SGS3-CWM-vX.X-vY.Y zip file, to get the tar file you can flash in Odin as PDA.
Instructions - Long
- Follow these instructions to the letter. Do not touch any buttons or checkboxes that are not listed below to touch!
- Unzip the attached Odin3-vX.X.zip file
- Unzip the attached CF-SGS3-CWM-vX.X-vY.Y.zip file
- If you end up with a recovery.img file, you've extracted twice. You need to end up with a .tar file - don't extract that one
- (USB) Disconnect your phone from your computer
- Start Odin3-vX.X.exe
- Click the PDA button, and select CF-SGS3-CWM-vX.X-vY.Y.tar
- Put your phone in download mode (turn off phone, then hold volume-down + home + power to boot - if it asks you to press a button to continue, press the listed button)
- (USB) Connect the phone to your computer
- Make sure Repartition is NOT checked
- Click the Start button
- Wait for the phone to reboot
- Done (if it took you more than 30 seconds, you need practise!)
New to Samsung? Unfamiliar with Odin? Think all the above is a hassle? Get used to it. It's very simple, and us Samsung folk use Odin (or Mobile ODIN ) for everything! It's so very very convenient once you get used to it.
Navigation
In recovery, use the volume buttons to move up/down, power or home button to select, and back to go back.
Manually rooting
Note: if you're just flashing CWM to root, it is easiest to follow this thread instead: CF-Root. It includes this recovery in it's installation, and automatically installs root.
Applying root once you have this recovery installed is easy.
- Go to the SuperSU thread and download the CWM-SuperSU-...zip file attached to the first post
- Put the zip file on your sdcard (either internal storage or external sdcard will do)
- Put your phone in recovery mode (turn off phone, then hold volume-up + home + power to boot - release power after one second) - Alternatively, use the "adb reboot recovery" command
- Select "install zip from sdcard"
- Select "choose zip from sdcard" or "choose zip from internal sdcard" (depending on where you put the zip)
- Select the CWM-SuperSU-...zip file
- Done !
Root in ADB
If you root through recovery and are not running a custom kernel, chances are that ADB does not have root when Android is booted. You can enable root in ADB even on stock kernels by using the adbd Insecure app. This does require the device to be rooted!
When flashing a new firmware ...
... you probably want to keep recovery. Most stock firmwares include the stock recovery, so if you flash those with Odin this recovery will be overwritten. Alternatively, if you are using Mobile ODIN to flash, first open the firmware files you want to flash using the "Open file ..." entry (sometimes several times), then select the "Recovery" entry and press the "Clear" button in the popup. This way, recovery will not be overwritten.
CWM Manager
Also attached is CWM Manager, a tool I wrote to manage my CWM kernels and recoveries. Download the APK to your device and open it to install. You may need to go to Settings -> Security -> Device Administration first and enable Unknown sources.
Note that v1.1 or newer of my CWM build is required to use CWM Manager.
Flash counter
To reset the flash counter to 0, see the Triangle Away thread.
OTA's
Since v1.5, flashing OTA updates is supported directly using this recovery. You should however be aware that said OTA will most likely re-install stock recovery and remove this one. Furthermore, it may keep doing so every time you boot. CF-Root v6.3 (and newer) will try to disable this, it is advised you flash that. Just reflashing this CWM recovery will likely not help.
Downloads
CF-SGS3-CWM-v5.5-v1.5.zip
CWMManager-SGS3-v3.60.apk
Thank you!!!!!

Recovery installed successfully.
But when I run ROM Manager, it says that I don't have any CWM installed. For example, if I choose the option "Copy current ROM", it issues the following message: "You must have ClockworkMod Recovery installed before continuing!. Install the recovery through ROM Manager first."

Install Odin on your PC, get the samsung drivers by installing Kies.
Hold down volume down key, middle of d-pad and power buttons all together while phone is off.
Put a different Rom .zip on your sd card using a PC.
Use Odin to flash clockworkmod to the phone, when fiinshed the phone will boot into cwm.
Use cwm to install the zip you put on the sd.
Reboot into the stable ROM.

I use Odin Multi Downloader v4.34
The data partition not formating would be a cause for concern, if I was you I would try formating it with ClockWorkMod by doing a data wipe/factory reset.
If it was me I would use my computer to put CyanogenMod 7.2 .zip file on the SD (its stable and handy for getting things working)
Most stock ROMS won't flash through CWM.
So to summerise I would try this:
Go into download mode.
Link up with Odin and select your OPS file (make sure GTI5500 OR 5503 appears at top and not the word Android)
Select "One Package" in Odin options
Download a .zip of Clockworkmod for galaxy 5
select it as the One Package and don't touch the other boxes...
let clockworkmod flash into the phone and let it boot into it
now try the data wipe in clockworkmod
install the cyanogenmod zip from the sd and reboot
good luck
I've attached my Clockworkmod Zip file. I use it at least once a week so its good

2.Initially i flashed the stock ROM then the stuck point broke odin downloader continued after amss download and also automatically rebooted the phne
3. samsung recovered from boot loop but still gave an error telling cant format the space F: "data" when i rebooted normally it advanced till that shiny samsung logo after the animation while booting up phone never booted
4. then i tried to load recovery CWm mod to odin ..it was giving that famous error not able to mount sd-ext emmc failed

Haha Wonderful
Your welcome, I did a dance too the first time I booted CyanogenMod after a brick

Yep! There is no key combo for recovery on Galaxy5, if I need to boot recovery and cannot load the rom I just put it in download mode and use odin to reflash clockworkmod, then when its finished it auto boots into cwm and I do whatever I need to

Cwm isn't enough... You need custom kernel...and custom kernels come with cwm... So unlock boatloader... Flash kernel... Then Rom will work..

Ok but then i cant access the recovery on my phone to install the rom , i tried the volume up, down etc and nothing works... i think the cwm isnt working properly....
if u already flashed to boot.img, just repeatedly press volume down button when phone booting, on kernel logo while led lights up.

If i cant access the bootloader how the hell can i install the rom? i didnt flash the rom yet im trying to figure out yet how to access the CWM recovery thats what im having trouble right now
then stop trying to figure out thing u cant achieve.
aosp base rom such as cm11 u want to install require flashing custom kernel, the boot.img provided in the rom zip, which in the kernel itself contains cwm recovery.
if u manage to flash it then u will get cwm that came with the kernel.

oh sorry i wasnt understanding that, i thought it didnt have any recovery, ok but now i installed a recovery from some place maybe i have to uninstall it, so im using flashtool , i put my phone in fastboot mode, then i choose select system to flash? Can You explain the steps using flashtool? im new to this tool too. sorry im really new to this roms thing yet..
1- turn off phone
2- hold volume up button and while still holding the volum up, connect usb to phone and pc. led on phone will light ups blue indicating fastboot mode.
3- open flashtool, click on flash button, select fastboot mode, click ok, click select kernel to flash, on dropdown on lower left change to *.img, browse the boot.img, click ok.
4- flashtool main window will give output log of flashing the kernel.
5- remove usb
6- turn on phone
7- while kernel logo appear and led lights up, press volume down repeatedly.
8- phone will now boot into cwm
9- do wipe data/factory reset
10- flash rom
11- flash gapps
12- profit
anyway, why did u want to flash the buggy cm11?
try custom rom based on stock first, or miui, or cm9 or cm10. those roms are stable enough for everyday use.

I have to send the folder cm-11.0-20131225-NIGHTLY-LegacyXperia-mango.zip and the gapps folder to sd card before i flash kernel right?
yes, both the rom zip and gapps zip need to be in sdcard.
and if i'm not mistaken, cm11 need to repartition system partition due to not enough space in it for the big rom.
probably need to manually format system too before flash, i'm not really sure.
ask in the support thread instead

It Just says This:
WARNING: This ROM uses a modified internal memory layout.
Our /system partition is originally 400MB but this space is not enough for a fluid kitkat experience and a full installation with proper google apps.
Our /cache partition is also too small to fit art-cache when we enable the ART runtime. We originally had 100MB /cache but art-cache needs ~150mb of free space.
I have repartitioned the internal memory layout, giving:
450mb in /system
469,5mb in /data
8mb in /cache
Steps required for correct installation (order is important):
1: Flash boot.img in fastboot & reboot into recovery
1.1 (optional): If the device is not booting, reboot to bootloader again and run:
fastboot erase system
fastboot erase userdata
2: Enter recovery, go to mounts and storage
3: Format /system, then /data and then /cache (Important step!)
4: Flash update zip
5: Flash gapps (recommended package is the one provided in the link below)
Steps 1.1, 2 & 3 are not needed when you install new cm11 nightlies on top of older cm11 builds in the future
If you want to return to a ROM that doesn't use the new partition layout, you need to follow the above steps again (only replace boot.img & update zip with the ones you want to use).

After the successful flash of the CWM file in Odin, do you let it auto reboot? Many Samsung phones have a built in script that checks to see if the recovery partition has been modified and then reapplies the factory recovery file back to it. Try this: Have the phone in hand with fingers on button combo for recovery (most Samsung phones with physical home buttons are typically Home + Volume Up along with Power, but you won't need to do the ) and when it reboots, hit the combo for recovery and it should boot to CWM, then you'll be able to do a nandroid backup and install the stuff you want. If you want to keep the stock rom and CWM recovery, you'll have to get root access and remove the script.

Galaxy SIII i9300 Recovery clockwordmode problem

Hello
im trying to flash the recovery i have the galaxy s3 i9300 international actually says EU model wich means that works only with EU sim cards !! i have download the correct recovery file odin3v185 and i fallow all the steps ( installed drivers kies for windows 8.1 - usb debugging - power button + volume down for download mode and volume up button - blue on odin and its written added - and auto reboot is checked also apd select the apd and the tar file << CWM_6.0.4.7_Touch_GT-I9300 >> ) !! odin says recovery – pass green 0:05 !! but there is no recovery only the stock one in a strage way im going to the download mode again and there says 4 files downloaded … cause i tried 4 times….but no clockwordmode recovery !! i dont wanna root it just to have the recovery instead to back up my stock rom samsung's one and install the << cm-11-20141115-SNAPSHOT-M12-i9300 >> can you explain what should i do i need some help?? thank you very much !!
Imho stock kernel restores stock-recovery everytime. So you've to root. And if you do, choice TWRP-recovery. CWM is obsolete.
thank you for your replay !! so as you told me i understood that i have to root first... but i have read that instead to flash the TWRP or the CWM its not necessary to root my phone !!
So can you explain to me why it goes back to stock recovery and why its necessary to root??
and probably to give a step by step guide to fall to proceed to root cause i have read different articles and im confused now!!
thank you again!!
<<On some S3 models, there is a script that overwrites the recovery you flashed. If you get stock recovery, just simply flash recovery again using ODIN, as soon as you see “PASS!”, pull the battery before your phone reboots. Then do the buttons to get into CWM recovery and do the rest of the root instructions.
Put the battery back in and boot straight into CWM recovery, then when you reboot in CWM recovery, it will ask you to disable recovery script. Do that and you should be good to go.>>
Thank you again !! for me after that step works perfect !!

Don't understand this, but practically: by interrupting reboot after flash, you got custom-recovery without rooting?
Hi yes you can install CWM without root !!! i knew it before posting here and i couldnt understood why its not working!! i dont know why i never read that note probably cause it is in a root guide!! and not mentioned in most videos!! its not important to be rooted instead to install CWM !! this step that i past in my replay its coped from galaxys3root . com But cause i am a new member i couldn't paste the link here too !! its written there as a note in frequently asked questions under steps for rooting thas why its says after that proceed with root !! As it says some galaxy s3 models have this script and thats why this step with battery should be done !!
I have to say that cm-11-20150614-NIGHTLY-i9300 has some "lags" not something to be afraid but some freezes i thing !! and as a user with stock samsung's 4.3 android now the last hours i have nothing missed from that its complete!! i just thing to install cm-11-20141115-SNAPSHOT-M12-i9300 just to be more stable !!
