[Q] there is something different adding an app in system/app? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

putting an app directly in system/app, how is different from installing it normally?

for "normally" i means install a .apk file, not using the market, i don't have market.
if i install an apk, it goes to /data
the only difference i see is that an app in system cannot be uninstalled, but only blocked, any other difference?

[Q] Auto Install from /andboot/AndroidApps ?

I have tried copying .apk files into the apps and games sub-folders, but I guess it doesn't auto install them?
I thought that's what it did on the first boot, or something like that?
I am able to mess with the folder using Linda file manager or similar, wihtin android, to install the apps... I thought perhaps I am missing something to do the auto-install?
Am I incorrect about this assumption?
place the apk's in the root of the AndroidApp folder, not the sub folders
Thanks I will try that.
Is it a one time install, on the initial setup, or does it check and/or reinstall on every boot into android?
Also, does it delete the apk after installation?

It reinstalling the apps every time you boot android, if they are deleted.(if you had them uninstalled, off course)
No, it doesn't delete the apk after installation.

[Q] App in /system/app but not in drawer!!

I tried to install Gmail.apk, and decided to use Root Explorer to copy it to /system/app. I changed the permissions, rebooted, and it is indeed in the folder where I left it, but nowhere to be seen in the app drawer. It doesn´t even appear on the manage applications. I want to this to more apps, but if I can´t do to one...
I tried signing the .apk and install it: gives me a parsing error;
I tried signing a .zip file and flash through xrecovery and managed to get the file in the system/app folder, but again, nothing on the app drawer.
I tried using ADB mask, and when I try to push the app into the system, it says it couldn´t install;
I tried command line, using SDK, but doesn´t recognize "adb" command. Tried console emulator, but permission denied.
Is it me or is my mobile picking up a fight with me? Can someone help?
Why dont you just try to download it from the market and install automatically that way?

Because it doesn´t appear on my market... And I also want to install more stuff, like the new blue market from pendo, so I would like to know what to do so I can continue to install more apps like this.
There will be a reason it doesnt appear in the market for you and that will be why you cant install it
WHat rom are you running?

I´m using EWJet with custom kernel, baseband 67.
Try flashing this
Reboot and login to market, accept the agreement.
Then flash this and this in that order without rebooting inbetween

Is it better to erase user data in recovery before flashing gapps?

Well it seems I need to do a fresh install, since I must have done something wrong to the system files... I flashed Gapps, and ever app appears except the ones from Google (Gmail, Gtalk, etc...). Is google against me today? =)
I think I´m going to flash the rom again and before rebooting, I´ll flash Gapps, what do you think?
Sounds like a plan....
let me know how it goes
No, it didn´t work... After clean install, and flashing gapps, gmail and market disappeared... Maybe some kind of incompability between the Rom and this market?
EDIT: It still appears in the /system/app... But it refuses to appear in the app drawer.
try adding the market widget to the home screen. Long press on it and n choose android widget.
That might work.

Thanks for your effort, but it doesn´t appear the market widget. It´s like the market is only a file that is filling space in the system folder, and that doesn´t have any connection to the rest. It seems this rom isn´t compatible with other markets (which is very weird...).
Thanks for the help. If someone comes up with a soltuion to my problem, I´ll be very happy to hear it.
The only thing I can think of its that you are trying to instal 2.2 versions into a 2.1 rom.
Try finding google apps from eric will's thread about his rom.

Yes I remembered that too, but didn´t know there was gmail and market that were different, meaning that what works in 2.2 may not work in 2.1... If that´s the case, I better give up, since there isn´t any other verion of blue market... Oh well, green it is.
If you flash back to stock with SEUS then make backups with titanium backup you should be able to restore the 2.1 versions of gmail.
As for blue market, I think that's just for 2.2+

Android market gone. Please help

I have a big problem now.
my android market gets stuck at "downloading" and i cant download any apps.
i google about this and it seems that a factory reset is required.
i was reluctant to do a full reset,
so i download the latest market from this forum, version 3.3.11 something.
after install, problem still persist, cant download apps.
so i use rom toolbox, deleted the market system app,
and reinstall the new app market.
now worst, market always force close.
fine, so i do a factory reset. wipe everything.
but after reboot, market app is not there.
what can i do to get back the market app?
Go download n try again ...or use root explore system/app n place the market app there ....hope it helps

Here is a thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329014
thanks, strangely the market app is now a system app just by putting the apk in that folder.
when pressing edit, theres no minus sign at the top right, meaning i cant delete it, it became a system app..

Simultaneous App Installs

I have noticed that android always installs apps one by one. This is very apparent when restoring apps after a flash of a new ROM.
Is there a way to do multiple simultaneous app installs as a modification for a custom ROM? I have installed apps to the phone by directly pushing them to system/app via adb and all that it does is just copy the apk to the designated folder. Why doesn't android do this? Is this something set in the system or the package installer or the market? Or maybe a combination of all?
Can someone shed some light on the matter? I am interested in creating a modification for something like this.

did you change the permissions for apk
Please don't do that. Here is the reason - In the Android manifest.XML, there are many permissions which are required by the app. Some special permissions are granted only to system apps. Normal apps cannot have those permissions. So, when you move the system app to data/app you are trying to convert a system app to a normal app. Hence it will never work. However there are a few system apps which can be safely converted to normal apps like the pre loaded Facebook app etc.

Do "All" the bloatware come under this category too?
Regards

Hmmm.....tell us which system apps you want to move to data/app????
there only a few system app that can be move without having problem while using it....the best choice to move it is to use System Cleanup....it can move system app to data/app, delete system app, freeze app or disable autorun in app....you can view which system app can be deleted...those can be deleted also can be move to data/app....
