Hi everyone,
I would like to add wifi tether back to my phone, since I'm currently running 4.4 unrooted on my DNA.
My Droid DNA *isn't rooted* and I currently don't have any interest any ROMs or anything involving a full root. I very happy with stock at the moment and only miss the occasional WIFI tether. I have used FoxFi in the past and it currently doesn't support the droid DNA.
So what I'm thinking is just giving my phone temp root with weaksauce, and use a root access app like "WiFi Tether for Root Users" by Müller, Lemons, Buxton
* Install weaksauce + Super SU for root
* Install wifi tether app and use that
* Set wifi app to Generic WLAN 0 and check routing fix so it would tether correctly
* Use temp root and root app until foxfi comes out with DNA support
* uninstall super SU and weaksauce for it to be completely stock again
So would this work? Would root be removed if i just uninstall Super SU, then Weaksause? Has anyone used Weaksause on the Droid DNA? Is there something unstable with Weaksause, that makes it not practical for this? Is there a better wifi tether app for 4.4?
I can live without WIFI tether, but I thought this could be a handy trick to bring it back. If anyone has tried this or any of these steps, please let me know. Any help is appreciated, Thanks.
I used weaksauce to root/s-off my DNA. I can say that it was easy, and it is simple to reverse, I think it'd be safe to try!
Weak sauce work for me for temp root as well. Not sure about the rest of your strategy though.

The WiFi teather for root users app doesn't work on kit Kat as far as I know. They may have updated it but it wasn't working last month.

O wow, I wasn't aware of that. Thanks for that tip. I looked around on the market today, and didn't see any apps with 4.4 support... So I believe that is still the case.
-Now I know Weaksauce, is a solid way to get some temp root for apps only (no ROMs, and flashing)
-Weaksauce is super easy to install and remove
-And currently there is still no app (rooted or non-rooted) supporting WiFi tether on the Droid DNA running 4.4
I think I'll wait for FoxFi to come out with a fix for the Droid DNA. I don't think it should be that much longer because, they seem to have a fix on Samsung phones. I may use Weaksauce for some root access apps in the future, so thanks on that info.
Thanks Everyone
FoxFi now works on 4.4 for the DNA
FoxFi now has it working,so give it a try.

It does work on Kit Kat. I've used it on stock, without root, and it seems to work. It redirects you to the stock wifi tether, while its opening a free tether port, so you can manually turn it on there. It has trouble turning on sometimes, Do NOT hit the call Verizon for subscription button. It takes a little patience, so keep trying to launch and it'll go eventually. Turning off the tether works best when I turn it off through the stock wifi, rather than FoxFi. Hope this helps and let me know if you decide to try with root access or another ROM.
i have a cricket lg l70. 4.4.2 kit kat rooted ....teather wifi router working awsome....2.50$ on the play store..open app. if its not working for you. go to there help page and configure for ur devise...

Hi, so I'm currently using an unlocked Samsung i777 outside the US. I'm loving this phone except for the fact that wifi tethering is not working. Every time I try to enable it, it says mobile data not available or invalid sim.
I can use my sim's 3G/HSDPA connecton just fine and my sim has a data plan and I can even use tethering on other mobile phones so I'm assuming that AT&T locked down the wifi tethering or something. How can I make it work preferably without rooting since I managed to unlock this ohome without root?
If I do need to root, well what are the apps that I need to make wifi hotspot work? Thanks.

You need to root, and you actually need to REMOVE an app (TetheringManager2.apk) to make it work.
It's AT&T's bigbrotherware
I hope you're using a local Sim and not planning on tethering while roaming, that would be a heart attack inducing bill waiting for you when you come home!!

I have same problem. But i can not find app TetheringManager2.ark in system/app. Can you tell what i should do? Thanks.
cannot tether after rooting and renamed TetheringManager2.apk
the file is there... i am in the same boat as you are. i bought an used i777.
you need to root the phone first, personally, i used Root Manager and located the file and renamed it (instead of deleting it)
BUT.. i still cannot tether :-( still getting the mobile data is not available or invalid SIM.
can anyone offer some insight to this issue ?
---------- Post added at 01:38 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:23 AM ----------
i tried to rename the file to something else, but did not get tethering to work.
i was mad and DELETED the file i renamed altogether and u know what - tethering works !
so i guess you will have to root the phone, DELETE the file, then you can get tethering to work.
have fun.
In the op it states she does not have root. Therefor what she wants to do is not possible. U need root to access the file she needs to remove.

UCLE5 remove the tetheringmanager.apk,is not work,open the wifi hostpot,setting is FC,why?
remove tether provisional app wifi hotspot still do not work EDIT:hotspot now work
hello everyone,
as the title shows I have remove the tether provision app with super manager as I can't find the tethering manager apk stated on this thread. Maybe it is on the stock GB rom I'am running stock ICS rom rooted and running on latest siyah kernel. When I tried to open wifi hotspot it just sits there unresponsive for several seconds then says "settings application stop working". I am on vacation here in the Philippines and using the local sim cards available here I have data on my phone but I can't share it on my other devices as the wifi hotspot is not functioning. I have searched several sites and install several root tethering apps to no avail. Any guide or help is greatly appreciated. Thnx
edit: I have now a functional wifi hotspot. I have downloaded FoxFi App from the market and it works. I have installed uninstalled reinstalled this app several times before but hangs and force closes upon activating the wifi hotspot. I have uninstalled the tether provision app on the root folder with Root Uninstaller as stated above. I don't know if it helps but when reinstalling the FoxFi App again, wifi hotspot on my phone now works. Though I just want to share as me myself badly needed this as my phone is not that big enough on surfing the net. Activating the phones native wifi hotspot is pretty sweet though.
2nd Edit: Though I just want to make it simple and share for everyone to know how do I make my wifi hotstpot work on stock at&t ics rom. This is a very simple step to make and works only if you are rooted. I am not responsible if you do something wrong with your phone. This do works for me..This is a guideline only for anyone wanting to have a wifi hotspot tethering on their phone as in my case running on stock at&t ics.
1. Download and install Unistaller Root app (or any root file manager app) and FoxFi tethering app ( other app may also work) from the google play market.
2. Open Uninstaller Root App and allow it SU permission then open system apps.
3. Navigate thru it and uninstall tethering provision apk.
4. Open FoxFi Tethering app , wifi hotspot should now work. Enjoy..... Do not use the native wifi hotspot from your phone as it will not work.
FYI: As in my case FoxFi will not work if you still have the Tethering Provision Apk in your phone it will just hang and forced closes when opening the app.
Hope anybody running Stock ICS will find this useful. Have a Great day....
How can I grant "SU" permission to the app?
My phone is not rooted but unlocked.
I am deadly in need of tethering. Please help me out. Thanks.

You must be rooted to obtain su permission. Also, if your signature is correct, you are in the wrong forum. This is the forum for Galaxy S2, and you have the S3.
Greetings from other sections of XDA...
Got a quick question... already searched and I believe I've found what I needed but would rather ask to be sure, since it's the lead developer's phone at work I'll be messing with... He's on stock ICS and want's to stay that way, except enable WiFi tethering... root is an option if it's needed...
So far I've found these solutions:
Root the phone, and load the Google tether app:
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
FoxFi:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...ch_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDEsImNvbS5mb3hmaSJd
He wants the software to stay EXACTLY as it is, but with tethering added, and doesn't mind root if it's required...
Any comments or suggestions?
I hve the Razr 912 and FoxFi works great without needing to be rooted.
I am using FoxFi as well and it is very reliable.
Hey everyone I am new here and this is my first post, let me start off by saying I am new to rooting as this is my first rooted android phone, but have owned several android devices including Motorola droid 2, droid bionic, droid razr, with a mistake with the iPhone 5, and now trying out the new galaxy s4 out and back with an android device, with that being said I have rooted my galaxy s4 with VRUAME7 on it for one of the main reasons of getting free Wi-Fi hotspot to run my tablet off of. I have tried everything I know and can find info on to enable the hotspot with no luck even the trev mod Wi-Fi tether with no luck, can anyone help me out with this and any tips and so forth for using my phone rooted, thanks in advance

Only one that worked for me was FoxFi (Padnet) Uhh i think the free version is limited. I dont use any tethering myself but i normally use "Wifi Tether" and i could not get that working correctly. Could possibly be because the mobile hotspot is used internally by FoxFi but regular "Wife Tether" Might not have the permission writes possibly since we are only rooted

I tried using that mod and so forth following it step by step and I could not get it working properly, I got my phone a few days ago and it came with me7 loaded and im wondering if they have an added block on it, on the bright side I did find a post under another category of threads named wifi tether and there was a user that posted how he used portable wifi tether from the play store and he said install it run it and set up your encryption then to exit out of it, then to use it click the app and it will start when verizon throws up the error message hit the home button and only the home button, the hotspot stays on and running that simple, I tried connecting my desktop and ipad and it works properly as far as I can tell so far, I know I kinda answered my own question but figured I would share with you all as well, but any other pointers or cool apps are welcomed since I and my wife are both new to rooting as she also has a galaxy s4

I used FoxFi (the paid version) on my other S4 that is ME7 and had no problems with it. Just read their info in the Play store and it will tell you what to put in FoxFi to use it without the certificate and lock screen. You'll get the VZW message that you have to call and set it through them but you don't. Just leave the message up and the WiFi tether worked just fine.

I didn't look into how to get past the certificate with FoxFi. I just installed the certificate, setup the lock screen then I used Tasker with Secure Settings to disable the passkey. So far I've used FoxFi several times and haven't seen a lockscreen. I setup Tasker with a simple Screen On and a 24hr cooldown to run Secure Settings > Clear Password. Seems to work fine for me for those who are bugged by the FoxFi and password.
This is for a family member, not for me, so it's simpler to find a non-root (free) solution. I tried fox-fi, but it doesn't seem to work on the rezound. It creates a hotspot but with no connectivity.
Are there any other methods, or do I have to go and root?

No, there is no working tether option for a stock, non-rooted Rezound other than the paid Verizon tethering.
OK. Thanks!
I used ClockworkMod Tether for a while before rooting my Rezound. It requires a USB cable and a program installed on your computer, but it is free.

I use Klink daily on my phone - it's a wired tether. It claims to work without root. I am rooted, so I don't know for certain that it works without root, but I can't recall it ever asking for root privileges. There is a free version that only lets you visit 3 or 4 pre-selected web sites, but that's all you need to test if it works for you.

Hello,
My wife broke the screen on her phone and the replacement came with 4.3 pre-loaded on the phone. I got it rooted but I really don't want to use the Verizon tethering app. We have always used the Treve-mod Wifi Tether. Don't use custom roms so don't care about the locked bootloader. We just tether because we have unlimited data. How do you tether on ota 4.3 that is rooted?

Check out FoxFi in the Play Store. Sadly it is a paid app but I think it works well for what I need it for.
I am also open to suggestions as I like to play with apps and see if something is a better fit for my needs!
I'm in the same boat. Note 2 with cracked screen came back from Samsung warranty repair with 4.3 OTA software and locked bootloader. Even with root, the best solution I've found is FoxFi, which is an $8 app. Can't speak to how stable it is, I've only used it for a few hours.
I definitely miss using Wifi Tether Treve Mod with 4.1.2. No way would I have taken the OTA, but cracked screens happen... Probably time to sell this thing. At least the Note 3 despite it's locked bootloader currently can be used with safestrap which allows for free tethering solutions / custom roms.
Anyone have a way to do this WITHOUT an app? I have SQlite Editor if needed.

This is what I used to get wifi tether going for my wife. I used the hotspot toggle widget. Just follow the directions....
(Info Pulled from here)
The App - Hotspot Toggle Widget
1. Open Settings> More Settings> Mobile Hotspot on your phone.
2. Select Mobile Hotspot but do not turn it on.
3. Tap on Configure and set your hotspot settings.
4. Now go to Google Play Store and download the Hotspot app: Hotspot Toggle Widget (Price: Free) (Developer: Fattin Hotspot Network)
5. The app will add a widget in your phone’s widget drawer. Add the widget to your homescreen.
6. Now turn the toggle widget on.
7. Press the Home button to cancel if you see any popup window.
8. Done!
