I have read several posts that make mention of a DNA root exploit without unlocking the bootloader.
I really just want root so i can use my root apps again. (I can wait for bootloader unlock and cwm)
Any thoughts?

Which version are you on. With the original version you can root phone using one of the unlock threads. Should be no problem at all using the bootloader s-off .

It's bot released because rheres no point to it. /system is write protected so just about all root apps wouldn't work.

I read in the Developers forums that you can get Cwm for Locked Bootloaders. Ive been trying to get it for a week and can this be done? I bought the Ultra at Bell and it says its model number c6806 and its locked.

Yes. here it is:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2426739
However just because you have CWM, doesn't mean you can flash ROM's.
All you can do is flash Root, and other mods.

sorry for the quick question, but would that work on the C6802 on .257, with locked bootloader? i've been wondering if i could get root without unlocking the bootloader(to preserve warranty).

yes you can root with a locked bootloader.
to unlock your bootloader you need to have root access.
You can always backup your TA partition, and then unlock bootloader, and then restore the TA partition and restore bootlock as well.
many possibilitites

hey thank you sir for the response. I got my phone with .257 version already on it tho, and from what I'm reading, I can't find a way to root on .257 without unlocking the boot loader. is this correct?
as I see it, the only option I have on .257 is to unlock the bootloader with the Sony method, but no way to root first. am I mistaken? thanks!

What you could do is use flash tool to go back to another firmware, then root, and then update to the newest version. But not flashing the kernel. then you can flash the modified kernel with CWM, and then flash the new kernel afterwards.
I think there is a tutorial on here that tells you how to do it.

ah yes, OK, that's what I was wondering, whether it is possible to downgrade the firmware with a locked boot loader, using Flashtool. perhaps I will try.. thanks
I just remember on some other devices I've had, a locked boot loader wouldn't allow a firmware downgrade.
I am cureently on .532(downgraded to root and backup TA). The thing is I can't apply the OTA. I also tried to temporary unroot the device. I also didn't mess up with any of the system files. The only thing I did after flashing .532 was rooting. Although the update via pc works fine but I want to keep the root.
Thanks

READ THE STICKIES
that said... now that you have backed up the TA the best thing to do is unlock the bootloader, then upgrade to .290 or .136 and flash recovery/kernel and re-root from recovery by flashing SuperSu

To get root on .290 with a locked bootloader follow this guide once you have .532 rooted:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2612980
Then follow this guide to update to .136 (the latest FW):

does anyone know if theres a "simple root" method for the m8??
Is unlocking bootloader, flash recovery, s-off all required just to root? I don't care about any of that stuff.. I just want a simple root
if thats possible

Unfortunately, unlocking the bootloader is required for the ATT variant to obtain root. Easy way to do that is this toolkit:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2699065
Unlock the bootloader, then you can flash a custom recovery and a superuser zip
S-Off is not required for rooting.

You cold always got to HTCDEV.com and unlock the bootloader and flash SuperSU or superuser. But that will erase everything on your phone. So make a backup.
