Insane battery problems - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I don't know what's going on anymore. I've used countless different chargers and usb cables and they don't work (literally, they work with other phones, just not mine). I have cleaned the inside of the phone's charging port, nothing. I have got the port repaired at a shop, it did work, but not any more. My phone does not charge at an amperage higher than 100mA on any charger, it starts at 900mA then decreases in a matter of seconds. According to another battery monitor my phone is discharging at 15% an hour. This is crazy for me as I could get my phone to last 24+ hours on a single charge a few days ago (I use greenify). Also, my phone is always hot, according to GSam battery monitor and various other monitors, well over 50 degrees Celsius. I'm running the latest version of Resurrection Remix for the SGS3 (android 4.4.2). If any other information is required I'd me more than happy to provide it.
Thanks in advance

Ok, thank you. As for the phone charging only when the charger is in a certain position/ not charging at all, I suppose I'll have to live with that?

If you mean moving the usb plug around causes the charging to stop then that is the usb socket damaged, if the same with several chargers/leads.
Replace the battery first, they last a year at best.

Yup, I definitely know the socket is damaged, paid £20, got it fixed, worked for a while. I'll pay the guy a visit in the next few days. As for the battery, I'll replace it because 50 degrees Celsius in my hands doesn't feel pleasant. I've been looking around on Amazon, but I can't find any sold by Amazon themselves as instructed.

You can also visit a local mobile store that sells genuine goods and buy a battery.
If the port got damaged too soon, then maybe the guy didn't repair it properly.

Ah ok, I have a few stores in mind, I'll do that then.
When I bring my phone back to him I hope he does repair it properly, issues I've been having have caused so much disruption.
On a side note, I put my phone to charge and it started off at 1000mA, within a few minutes it went down to 800mA, a few seconds later (basically as I've been writing this message it's gone down to 300mA... Is this normal? I only started using a current monitoring app since my problems started, so the currents I was getting before prior to the issues are unknown.
EDIT: Nope. Not normal. Charger connected: 100mA. Phone is discharging at 1% every few minutes & feels like it's about to spontaneously combust.

Battery's definitely gone mate.
If your phone supports NFC, you can use that to check if the battery's genuine or not. Original replacements have embedded NFC.

only drop in mAh was when i buyed 2 m cable from ebay (dont do that) for charging ..and it didn't work ...but now i bought hama 1.8m cable and it works flawlessly....i use galaxy current to see how many mAh phone gets but ...you sould definetly buy a new battery ...it could damage your phone

In a nut shell ...yes
Charging issues are difficult to diagnose, as you are working with multiple components to begin with.
But if different cables and chargers are tested, and fail to improve the conditions, then you are left with the device as the cause.
Additionally, if the device is unmodified, either by software or hardware that generally affects it's function, then hardware is the remainder.
Charging port is the probable cause ...IMHO ....g

Its not to difficult to change it out I bought mine from cellphonerepairshop.com got the OEM flex cable took about 20 minutes to open it up and change it theres tutorial videos on youtube if you are off contract I would suggest that.
Before you switch out any hardware, get a can of air, alcohol, and cotton swab.
Give the port a good cleaning.

If you dont want to replace the port you can get another battery and a wall charger, works like a charm
I agree. I like my 2700ma batteries and charger. For long days I bring the extra battery. The rig was super cheap too, but good quality.
I've had charging troubles as well
About a month after I first received my note I went to charge it (wall outlet, original adapter/cable, as well as stock ROM no root) and it refused
to charge. Restarting twice solved the problem, but still, every so often, my note will refuse to charge and I am unsure why. When it refuses to charge, it wont accept any charging cable (I check to make sure each is clean) although the phone works normally. Is this a known issue on some devices?
Sounds like a battery problem.
after some more searching around, it seems it was the battery causing my troubles, thanks for the tip! ordered a new one, it'll be good to have a backup battery

Battery is not charging correctly

For a while my phone is taking a lot much time to charge than it usually take earlier.
So today i installed this app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.abmantis.galaxychargingcurrent.free
And after i connect my mobile to charger this app usually shows that my phone is having max current:400/500 which shud be 999 instead. (Read app description)
After i disconnect charger and connect it back 3-4 times i get a rating of 700 or sometimes even 900(max) but after letting the mobile charge for a while this automatically decreases to 300-400.
And also from the time i bought the phone(4 months back) charger usually gets somewhat hot(not warm) but i ignored that issue.
So what do u think the fault is in-charger/phone?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
Do not use such an application, let the phone discharge to zero to turn off and recharge to full.

charging problems are mainly related to cable!

Slow charging

My galaxy S3 charges slow like in an hour and a half I only get 10 - 15 % increase compared to before I got like 30 - 50%. I don't think its the charger cause I tried charging my sister's S3 and it charged normally. Should I calibrate my battery? If so how should I do it? Thank you in advance.

If you are using custom kernel than reset all settings in kernel than reboot. or simply flash the the file from the link below and it will clear all settings. than reboot. it might solve the problem. It worked for me...

My suggestion try a different cable from a low end samsung mobile but original as duplicate wont do u any good.
Sent from my GT-I9300
You may use a kernel like Perseus which offers settings to disable 'unstable power source detection' and 'remove the safety margin' of another 100mA, and use an app like 'galaxy s3 charging current' to monitor the charging rate. cables can make a big difference too, I use my wife's sony cable which offers me 1000ma charge rate compared to the samsung one (little twisted) witch charges at 400 mA.

Clean battery stats calabrate the battery with an app (some people dont beleive in this) and flash a different kernel.I still use yank555 from his new site and its sweet as.Perseus or boeffla are good kernels too though.

[SOLVED] Galaxy S3 Not Charging At All!! 15% in 3 hours!

It's been a few months I'm using the GS3. Everything was working fine.
Suddenly, yesterday, this fantastic quad-core beast refused to charge! I made so many attempts but all in vain :crying: :
Tried a different charger.
Tried a different USB Cable.
Tried charging it via PC/Laptop.
Tried removing the battery, cooling everything down and then charging again.
Blew inside the USB port.
Rebooted several times.
Done a factory reset (I know it wasn't a thing to be done.. but... ).
What is the problem?! I've never dropped it or something like that! It's too important for me to have a phone!
Won't send it to Samsung ever. I think people at XDA have more brains.
The only connection to the internet at my home is my S3's GPRS. Wait a minute... if S3 isn't charging how am I posting and starting this thread?
It charges. ONLY 15% in 3 hours when it's Switched OFF and it's charged using Laptop/PC ONLY.
If I try to charge it using wall charger, it never charges! It never charged even before. Whenever my S3 was completely out of battery, I HAD TO use the PC ONLY to charge. It won't ever charge using a wall charger. I mean after it's charged a little bit after using the PC, I could always use the wall charger but FIRST, ONLY PC.
Now, When it charges about 15%, then, today, it DOESN'T CHARGE AT ALL. It means if you Switch it ON, boom! You won't ever be able to charge, no matter if you're using it, no matter if it's connected to a wall/PC as the charger, it always keeps on only "draining". To charge I HAVE TO switch it OFF.
PLEASE HELP! I CAN'T LIVE LIKE THIS!
Note: Phone isn't rooted.
SOLUTION WITH ROOT : Flash Boeffla Kernel. DONE! The problem is Galaxy S3's Stock Kernel! The phone charges at a very good speed!
SOLUTION WITHOUT ROOT : Buy the Capdase USB cable (HCBB00-SM01) from or Amazon or eBay.

There are another hundred identical threads, likely causes are faulty charger, lead or charging circuit inside phone. If you are on custom rom/kernel then flash back to stock.

Here are the Maximum Values in the Galaxy Charging Current app-
Samsung Charger+HTC Wire=100
Sony Charger+HTC Wire=100
Samsung Charger+Samsung Wire=200
Sony Charger+Samsung Wire=200
Samsung Charger+Sony Wire=900
Sony Charger+Sony Wire=1000
The problem is, the Sony wire I've used isn't mine. So I can't keep that with me. I have the Samsung Charger, HTC & Samsung Wires.

Finally I solved it!
The problem with all the Galaxy S3's is the USB WIRE. Samsung's data cables are 30AWG wires (the lower the number, the better speed). Our phones need at least 26AWG wires to charge who good speeds. Now, the more thin is the wire, the more is it's resistance. If you notice the difference between Samsung and Sony Ericsson wires, the Sony ones are really fat in front of Samsung. I used the Galaxy Charging Current Lite app to test various USB Wires and Sony Ericsson's wire was the best giving the Max value of 1000 (Samsung gave 500). But Sony doesn't sell wires, we need to buy a Car Charger/Adapter with it and pay a big amount... Again a problem!
Solution: I bought a wire from www.stuffcool.com (Capdase USB cable (HCBB00-SM01) and I was shocked to see my mobile always around 80-90% charged! I recommend everyone to buy USB Wires for their phones from www.stuffcool.com and charge their mobile faster!!! They're thick wires, they don't break and they don't eat up the current! Samsung USB Wire users will definitely understand the difference in those wires
I bought it from stuffcool.com , however, it's available on eBay and Amazon too.

I have external batteries, so I'm not totally screwed but, I used to be to able to download torrents all night and the phone would charge, not the case anymore. Not blaming it on the bricking or the dudes that fixed it for me, it's all in the cables. I have 3 cables, all worked great before, now none of them work, except the samsung cable, but still won't charge while tethering, weakness, it's the cables... there's not an app out there that will help you

[Q] S3 Battery Problem

Hi All,
I have an odd battery problem. My S3 will die and at times when I plug the charger in and the Battery Charging Screen comes up, It shows the battery has more than 50% life. If I unplug the charger and use it, the battery lasts maybe an extra hour but once it reaches about 6% the screen starts flickering and then the mobile network disconnects. I'm sure this is due to low power from the battery.
Any way for me to fix this or to ensure my phone is displaying the correct battery percentage?
See attachment.
Test new battery. If its not charging while you're using it while plugged in then you have a faulty battery. Don't let the power drop so it shuts down. Try and lend a battery from a friend and test it.
I have the same problem with my phone. Is it possible that this problem is caused by the custom roms we are using? What do u think? :/

It charges while I'm using it. Slower but still charges.

It happens even when I'm using my stock rim. I've reflashed. Installed apps uninstalled apps. Everything

How old is the battery. Power problems nearly always end in an old battery that just needs replacing
Thanks
i have same issue ...

OK well these battery's don't last forever. First thing I would do is ask a friend to lend one and test it for 24hrs. Or just buy one
