Inconsistent charging speed - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
Lately I've been having a weird issue with charging my I9300 device:
When I charge the device using the charger (which is original, by Samsung) , sometimes it takes a huge amount of time to charge, and if I also use the device (even for simple things) it actually drains the battery instead of charging it.
I've installed "Galaxy charging current" app, which also shows weird results:
When I have this issue, the average/maximum value is about 400mA or even 100mA , but when I disconnect the USB from the device and reconnect it, the values can change to 900 or 999 or even a bit higher.
My device is running on CM rom version "11-20140612-NIGHTLY-i9300" .
I'm not sure if it's related to the rom , the kernel or something about the hardware.
I've checked the battery status by going to a hidden (?) setting (using my app btw) of "Testing"->"Battery information", and saw that for "battery health", it says "Good". Attached a screenshot of what I see.
Can anyone please help?
Also, is there maybe an app that can warn me when the device is being charged yet it has the battery being drained? Or maybe give me an estimated time till the battery will finish being charged? I also hope that such an app won't drain the battery by itself...

This behaviour is caused due to the inbuilt charging protection mechanisms.
Its usually the cable. Samsung one is known to be crappy. Get a proper one and try.
If you are still experiencing issues plug it in to a different port. Front panel USB ports are sometimes too weak to supply high currents

Is it possible it's just the cable and not the charger?
I thought that cables are "stupid" .
EDIT: that's weird.
I tried 2 other cables: an old one of LG, and a new one of Chromecast. Both showed about 460mA in the app, no matter how many times I re-connected the device to them.
I've also tried to connect the Samsung's USB to the computer's front USB, and it gave me 400mA, but I think this is more expected.
Do you think that using a different new USB cable will solve it? or maybe it's the charger?
EDIT: just tried a new Samsung USB, and it seems to work just fine.
I didn't know USB cables are so different.

i olso had problem with charging..stock charger ...slow charging and battery drain on charge ....it was a problem with wall charge unit ...i used other phone's charger but max on that was 700 mAh and phone charged normaly.(but slowly)..now again my stock charger is working again plus i have 2m cable aftermarket ....can that be a softvare issue...if unit isn't good than it souldn't charge now normaly

[Q] Not charging? :S

Hmmm, this is a weird one guys.
I can charge my X10 only if it is plugged in to the USB port via the computer. However, when it is plugged directly into the power socket, it does not charge. Now, I've tried two different chargers, and both work when charging another device (my iPod Touch).
I don't understand. The cord can't be broken, since it works when charging from my computer? Yet, the charger (the thing that plugs into the wall) can't be broken either, since another charger didn't work and also both have the ability to charge my iPod.
What's up? :S
Thanks in advance.
NOTE: Even when charging while off works on the computer, just not when it's plugged in (and I am not using a custom kernel either). I doubt the ROM matters (since it still has the above problem while charging when off), but even so, I'm using v061 of Wolfbreak's 6.1.3 ROM.
Bump bump, bump it up!
Do you use the original SE in-wall charger? If not, thats the problem, if yes I recomend to test with a different wall charger (eg. from another device)
May be the cable it faulty? Because the PC charging uses a less amount of Volts (to my knowledge) and the charging while connected to PC is very slow. Did you try with any other Official cable?
It could possibly be your cable as mine broke a few weeks back (Same Problem), I just replaced the cable now its fine
Guys :-/
Went out and bought a new cable, and still not charging from the power Only from the slower laptop USB port :'(
I think it may be the X10 itself..
I am still suffering from this problem And sometimes when it's connected to the PC and displays 'charging', it instead discharges

Maybe the connector in the phone is broken????
Yep your usb port is broken, mine did exactly the same thing. You will have to send it to fonebiz in rockdale, nsw. I just got my phone back, took 6 weeks to repair!

Rockdale? 6 weeks?! Not going that far. :-/ I can live with just charging from the PC at the moment.
Thanks though Sad news indeed
Is is still under warranty? It will eventually stop charging from the PC too. I was waiting for parts to arrive so maybe they have them in stock now. That was 6 weeks from melbourne and back.
Going through the same thing in the US. I was told repair would be 5-7 days, but I'm sure I'm looking longer. If it comes back within the time frame they gave me I will be pleasantly surprised. I hope you're still under warranty and do your self the favor and send it in or soon you will have a very expensive paper weight. Good Luck!
I went through the exaxt same thing. It stopped charging from the wall but could only charge from computer but eventually stopped charging altogether.
Did you try taking out the battery and plugging in with the original se microusb cabe to the wall. After 5 min. put the battery in. First time didnt work for me but then i took out the battery again and put it back in immediately and then it turned on.
try getting a usb-to-wall charger, and plugging your computer usb cable into wall.

Out of curiosity, how long before each of your X10's stopped charging altogether? :S
Because, for me, it's been longer than two months and throughout that time I've managed to keep charging it via the computer.
Thanks.

I've 3 usb-to- chargers here:
From a MP20 phone, generic charger that can't charge my phone and also can't charge most of other devices, output power and voltage are low.
From an old Ipaq(not ipad) it does charge my x10 for some reason takes longer than the original, it says on it 1000mA and 5V, I don't remember the real amp and voltage on it.
And the original one, always charge really fast(2 hours for a full 0 to 100% when the phone is ON)
Conclusion, buy and original charger if you not using one, which seems to be the case.
OR, update your baseband if possible, as battery issues are normally related to baseband are normally the cause of this errors.
To make sure you can always try to do a SEUS repair.

Sorry to say this, but your are wrong man.
My charger says 5.0V which is exact the same voltage as any USB ports(exception for some internal USB ports used commonly for bluetooth and other low consumption devices that use 3.0 to 3.3V).
The difference is mainly on the amount of power amp it can supply, the original usb cable + wall charger provides 700mA, while in the PC USB 2.0 ports provide 500mA, 1.0 USB provide 100mA and 1.1 I don't remember now, generic usb wall chargers say sometimes they provide 500mA but they mostly provide 30l0mA and sometimes they do not provide on 5.0V they oscillate between 4.6 to 5.2V a good usb port have to provide 4.95V to 5.1V any difference from this may even burn a phone if higher and not charge or reduce a battery life if too lower.
Everytime a battery is not charged up the end of 100% they battery life gets a bit reduce as next time even if you leave it to charge up to 100% it won't really be at 100%, this can only be seen by measuring the battery voltage after the charge, fully charge it must reach up to 4.7V
on the battery or something like this.

If the cable is too thin(like 1.0 usb cables they can't handle 500mA if connected to an already extended usb port it may not get recognized and also not even charge.
Laptops usb ports may not allow 500mA it different for every laptop, some work, some doesn't and others your have to set that on bios.

Always when connected to the PC it should say charging, if it did say discharging at some point then there was something wrong.
But charging on the pc is very slow and not good.

Reasons for battery icon flashing/blinking while charging

Donno if its the regular case of 'bad usb port'. It's happening only when I'm charging with specific car charger (1A, output 5V) sometimes its charging fine, sometimes I notice its stop charge and the icon of battery is blinking/flashing...
I've tried to clean the usb cable and port from dust, maybe the cable got some dust into it?
Also I've notice that the temperature of device goes down to 22°C when its happening...
At any other chargers (include othe car chargers and other wall chargers) there is no problem at all...
What could be the reason of this specific car charger (it used to work without any problem the last few months ago)?
High/Low voltage? Dust?
maybe other problem with my device? (Battery/something else)
BTW - when I plug the charger out when its happening its stop blinking.
could you please give us a screenshot?
Do the blow thing

From reading your post, it only happens with that one charger....any other charger works as expected?
That being the case.....it ain't your phone or the USB port/board in the phone.....
Chargers DO fail, and from my experience, dc to dc step down transformers and circuitry (the type in your car charger) have a higher failure rate than their ac to dc (mains) equivalents. ....
Time to buy a new car charger methinks

@wishmas7er - which screenshot mate? when its happens all I see is blinking/flashing battery icon, without any other message or something else about it.
@keithross39 - correctly mate, all other charger (any kind of them) works just fine.
Yeah seems like its the car charger problem, just first time i've notice it...
Thanks!
BTW - the reason of 'bad touch' while charging with some generic chargers is because higher amperage then should be to this device's battery? or other reason?
As long as the amperage is not ludicrously high or low, the only noticeable difference would be the charge time.....other than that there should be no noticable effect....

Battery Icon Flashing with Samsung Galaxy S4 Car Charger
I had the same problem charging my Galaxy S4 in the car. AC charging works fine but when plugged into the DC car charger the battery indicator icon flashed rather than showing the lightning bolt.
I purchased a higher voltage DC charger adapter, same symptom.
Finally I swapped out the USB-to-micro cable and now it works fine. I suspect that in the car the phone gets jarred over time and it wears down the micro-USB connector.
It's not just you fella........
The micro USB socket idea is (imo) a pathetically fragile arrangement for what the manufacturers intend it to do. I've repaired two phones with worn out sockets, and judging by what I am reading on XDA, it is an issue that is getting more and more common.........

I have same problem with my nexus 4.
After some googling I came across an app called Ampere.
This app tells you how much rate of current your battery is charging at.
So what i found is that when phone gets old the battery doesnt hold up charge as before. So the charge rate becomes slow. The nexus charger is rated at 1Amp and at the time of charging is able to provide low current than the rate at which the battery is draining. So the Android gets confused between charging and discharging.
For eg: if phone is charging at 300mA and draining at 350mA.
Also the battery draining rate is constantly changing. So when its greater than charging rate phone shows discharging and if less : charging...
Fix: There are three fixes which i can think ...
1) Get a higher Amp rated charger...
2) while charging close most of apps , dont play games , switch to a lower gen network like 2g , close wifi , close data which will reduce the discharge rate of the battery.
3) Get a new battery.
So I'm experiencing the almost the same blinking problem with my note 4. Each time the lightning icon blinks the phone vibrates in sync with it. It won't come on it won't reboot I've tried everything BUT replace the battery because if I plug it up it'll vibrate and blink but nothing else works. It's completely black when it's unplugged.

Charging problem

Hello,
I have a charging problem recently, I am connecting my phone to the charger, and you need to play with the micro usb cable until you hear the charging sound, also, my original charger died a few months ago so I am using different chargers (mostly my tablets chargers rating at 5V 2A).
Also, sometimes, but not always, when I charge overnight, it's not even charging, although I check before I go to sleep that the red led is on.
The charging time also varies, sometimes it's super fast and sometimes it really struggles.
I suspect the micro usb port.. but how could it be damaged so fast, this phone is so expensive, cant they make one of the most important parts more durable?
It's really frustrating, and maybe I should get a genuine S3 charger and that's the cause of the problem, but I tried to order one from eBay and it was fake(said to be "genuine"), so maybe you can link me to an eBay seller that sells the real thing from Samsung? btw, is there a way to know if it's real (it seems like 90% of the stuff there are fake)
Thanks
Have you tried the cable with different devices and the charger also yoh could try using a different cable with your phone and seen if that fixes your probelm

Battery charging problem

Hello friends... I noticed the battery charging problem with strange way in my galaxy s3. I'm running android 4.3 cm based custom rom with googy kernel. My charger does not charge correctly as it was doing. I'm using stock charger with stock cable & was working well but now i noticed since 3 to 4 days, whenever i plug the charger it shows the running charging indicator but it won't going up the percentage for long time. For example. if the battery percent is 20% then it shows the opposite response in descending order like 20%, 19%, 18% like this. Very strange issue. As it should charge the device upword like 20%, 21%, 22%. If i unplug the charger & then plug the charger again then sometime it starts charging correctly in ascending order as i was running well. I checked with another cable but the problem still same. It solve the problem with plug & unplug the charger then can charge the device with normall. Plz help to find & solve the problem. Sorry for the bad english. Thanx
Goi back to stock rom, see if problem still exists. If it does then your kernel or rom is the cause, bugs are to be expected in early releases.

If it is the cause of early releases or kernel then after the unplug & plug the charger why it starts charging well? I mean if its sure it is cause of kernel & roms then why sometimes the problem sovled after unplug or plug. Well i will change the rom to 4.2.2 which i was running & will check the issue again.

Use this app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.abmantis.galaxychargingcurrent.free
Monitor the MAX value (others do not matter).
Check with your charger what the MAX value reports. Also test on Computer. If you have 2 cables (which I assume is the case) test both on PC and Both in wall socket

Ok so with wall socket + stock cable, charging should be normal (1000 is normal). If it still charges slow, you're experiencing drain

I noticed same problem with my phone some time ago.
i used powerbank recently and it started not charging.. when i charge and use phone, battery is discharged. i thought the batteries inside powerbank are old. changed.. but sometimes charged, sometimes not or very slow. then i noticed that problem persist when i charge phone at home too. i unplugged and plugged cable, then chargin was normal..
My friend has problem with cable some time ago too..
I hope it it problem of cable, not phone...
You've eliminated the charger as the cause so now only remains the software or the charging IC in the phone.
As per my my original suggestion, flash a stock ROM (not a leak or beta -flash the offical 4.1.2 for your country) to test. If the problem still remains then your phone needs a new motherboard.
I had been having the same problems when I installed CM 4.3. I have gone back to the stock rom that came with the phone and the problems have gone.
Is this cause of of higher value of charging with fast charging kernel support? Bcoz i had charged the device for some time with 1300MA value.
The link below with MickyFoley's tip was the solution for me, now everything works fine again after a lot of struggle...

Slow charging with phone turned On

Hello dear fellows- i am facing a very strange issue on my lg g5 (850).
I have a third party charger (Aukey QC 2.0) with a usb A to Usb Type C cable. This charger never failed me once on any of my Samsung phones. Quick charging always worked as it should but with lg g5 its charging speed is very slow. According to Ampere app its just 310 mA. After connecting this charger it even shows fast charging notification but fast charging is not there.
Today i've decided to charge it after turning it off completely and guess what... It was charging really fast as it should while turned On.
Now i am confused whether it's LG's software which is preventing 3rd party cables/chargers to charge fast while turned On or is it something else.
Any input guys or similar experience?

It's always possible an app is using a lot of battery while you're charging. So the phone charges slower. Question though, why don't you just use the provided charger from LG?

Unfortunately, the LG charger was lost last week during my travel so by chance I had this Aukey charger lying around which is Quick Charge 2.0 supported so i am trying to accomplish the original results with it until i'll get my hands on a QC 3.0 compatible charger.
Hm, my Aukey Quickcharge car charger even works fine with my phone.
Make sure you aren't using the phone while charging it, it will always charge much slower.
I have some doubts on my data cable. Will try to swap it with another one and will test again.

I can confirm that the LG software does not prevent fast charge with 3rd party chargers and cables.
I'm using a 3rd party QC 3 charger with a 3rd party cable, and fast charging is working just fine when phone is powered on.
And in Battery Monitor Widget I can see that it actually is fast charging and is using QC 3 to throttle charging amperage.
However I've experienced a couple of times, when changing cable in the charger, that it wouldn't fast charge. It was solved by removing the cable from the charger and connect it again, and then it works just fine afterwards.

Seems like slow charging has something to do with the heat/temperature of the battery or overall phone. If i try to charge it when the battery temps are around 30 then it charges really fast but if the temp is above 30 then software somehow restricts the fast charging to avoid any damages.
I am not sure if the above analysis is valid but my observation has lead me to this point only so far.

I learned 2 things from my testing using ampere and a drok USB current meter:
First, ampere isn't really that accurate when it comes to this phone and charging currents. It was consistently about 200mah off.
Secondly if the phone is even somewhat warm, it will limit the charge current to ~300 mah with the screen on. However if you turn the screen off, it returns to full charging speed (1.8 amps in the case of my charger) I think it is some sort of thermal throttle to keep the battery from getting too hot.

That really is frustrating. I always see fast charging when plugged in, although it definitely is not fast at all if you are using it or have the screen on .
Are you plugged into a wall outlet directly? Not an extension cord? Sounds like a warranty replacement may be in order, it's possible there's something faulty with your USB C connector.
Have I not voided warranty with unlock? thanks
Tried with xiaomi charger and it works, no joy with original.
Must be faulty lg charger using same cable
I have LG G4 and I was facing the exact same problem. The phone would charge very slow while screen was on. Once I let the screen go off the phone charged at the expected rate. It seems LG is incorporating some serious throttling in their phones.

I think you can not fast charge while the phone is turned off. Maybe someone can start another thread where we can compare battery logs because this will help to see the amount of time used for charging. Is there any way of seeing if the device is using QC 2 or 3?

I experienced that too. Isn't it strange?
Also, I experience with some chargers, the phone will just start charging for some seconds and then act as if the cable was unplugged and then start charging again. I don't know why. Anyone experiencing this too? In this case, it didn't help to flip the cable...

This is a problem with the make of the charger. I have some Choetech QC chargers, and the programming in the QC is faulty. Some safety mech kicks in, turns off the charger, then turns back on again, over and over. I have some Tronsmart chargers and there is no issue. Of course, the OEM LG one works fine too.
