I'm gonna throw this out and see what happens.
I just got Efficasoft GPS Utilities for my wizard. So far I like it, but it doesn't come with maps loaded on them. Which is the only thing that bothers me about it.
On their website, they say you can make maps using a google maps screen capture. but the biggest map I can generate is a 5 mile radius and that's no good to me.
Anyone have any ideas on getting some decent maps to work with it?
Ok when i had my iPhone my google maps was on point with my location, now with the HD2 my location is off around 5000 Meters.... is ther anyway or another app to use that will give accurate location on maps?
google maps
got to menu , settings ; select Use GPS, it takes about 30 secs. to 1 min. on your to right corner you will see that is seeking for satellites if you get more then 3 it will ready around 30-20 meters

Hi there, does any body know of an app for gps navigation and maps that doesn't need data to work. Useful if you got lost without coverage.
Thanks

I use Google Maps, it's storing maps in automatic since a few updates ago.
If you have cached at least the zone you're in with most levels of zoom you won't have any problem.
If not Maverick and Atlas (for pc, to create and store maps) is a valid alternative
If you were asking for a way to find your position withouth having a map cached in your sd and withouth data connection, i think you won't find any application able to do so.
i use navdroyd or mapdroyd, the former has routing while the latter has none
OruxMaps can use offline maps. I use finnish maps from retkikartta.fi but those are probably useless to you.
Thanks for all the replies. Will try each one and see which works
For me

NDrive works fine.
I use it a lot!
There's a lot of links at Google which guide you to install and use that.
The new update of Google maps 6.7.0 denies you to save cached areas for offline viewing. It's a common problem and many users report of the message "Not available" when they try to save an area for offline viewing.
The solution:
So solve the "Not Available" problem in Google Maps (Android), you simply download the older version, 6.6.0 from this place and installs it.
good stuff man, i dont really like this new feature of the gmaps thingie... will keep this version for a bit.
by doing a brief research i can find many people with the same issue, and we are talking about major urban areas.
sometimes google does something really cool but with some very stupid mistakes, wonder why....cheers
Nyc, also wondering if it possible to save bigger areas of the map.
Well I'm on 6.9.0 in the UK and I can save for offline. You might want to upgrade to this version.

Ditto here. SatNav also works fine even with internet switched off.

Ditto for me but save does not work even after clearing existing pre cached areas.
Its actually missing in the menu where it once was .

The off-line caching has been moved from the labs settings .
Later versions
now turn cache on via settings .
Go to map location Menu Make available offline Select area = new off-line map
So instead of hitting the address and opening a search bar that includes Off Line cache this area . It is now in the menu settings .

Offline maps are not available in Malaysia too.
I'm using offline maps in Bangladesh. Works great. Up to 29mb per block which pretty much covers Dhaka city. On latest map

North of Spain: even with today's (16/08) new version of Google maps, o get the same issue: I cannot get offline maps from any area

Fixed: I tried getting a bigger chunk of the map and it worked

When you're off Wi-Fi or 3G/4G, you'll have 'OFFLINE LIST' below the map.
For me, 6.12.0 sometimes shows this 'Not Available' and sometimes fails to completely download a map, but deleting the unfinished download and restarting the application seems to fix it.
P.S. Came here from Google and just now saw that this topic is in the S III forum - well, I don't think this issue is specific to it - it also manifests on my Galaxy Nexus.
No good in Korea
I am in Seoul, and it does not work here. It works for other countries (US, Europe...) though.
I wonder is there something about Korea. Last year, there were zero games in Android market here, because of some local laws. It has been solved since.
you still have to deal with the offline maps getting seizures randomly during navigation. the only way is to quit nav and come back in otherwise it won't update location and start showing grey squares.....
no idea why it's an offline map issue only

Is this workaround still working?
Do you know if is possible to install two different versions of an app on Android?

Is it maybe a map-licence problem? Looks depends on country...

Hi there,
you are absolutely correct with the License Issue:

Get something like the Route 66 app. You can all the maps I guess for free as long as don't want navigation ...
Another Work around?
Back when I was using a jail broken iPhone 3G....there was a method of downloading ALL Google Maps files you wanted via a special program and then storing them in the iPhone for use off line. This activity was NEVER envisioned by either Google or Apple.
Why can't this feat be duplicated for Android?? Would solve all those irritating, "Map not available for this region" problems...
I have the S4 int version with 4.2.2, and i can't install the old version of maps.Did all the preparation with deinstalling the updates for the current Maps, and enables the "install from unknown sources".Ask me do i what to install it,and when i hit yes, show me "the app is not installed".
.
Anyone with 4.2.2 or newer, successfully installed the 6.11.1 maps application?

GPS is independent of wifi or your data service...
google maps should work but if not then there are several others in the Play store... MapFactor being one of them
doesnt have navigation, but Maverick is nice for world GPS mappings
Stock Google Maps
Depending on the version you have, stock Google Maps can cache maps for offline use. If you're using the (slightly) older version, you can do it easily by pressing the menu key, selecting Make Available Offline and selecting the area you want to cache.
If you're using the newest Maps, you'll notice the option is gone. Instead, you'll have to zoom in over the area you want to cache, and type in "ok maps" into the search bar and press enter/go. A translucent dialog at the bottom of the screen should appear notifying you that the map has been cached.
Once cached; you should not require a internet connection to use maps. Though I have never actually used it offline, so I am not entirely sure what the experience is like. Also note that this does not save satellite/aerial imaging. Only navigational maps.
