Earbuds - Xperia Z2 Accessories

Hi guys, the earphone Sony has provided is too ****ty. I can't take this anymore. My budget is under USD100(SGD125). Any great ones? I have been using the jays, but they're horrible. I like more bassy earbuds.
Sent from my D6503 using Tapatalk

Try the xiaomi pistons 2.

Go to a headphone store that you can try n buy. Different people have different tastes. Personally, I never find good bassy earbuds under 100USD. Good bass for me means that vocal and instrument details should still present, which I cannot find at all. If you don't care about vocal and other details, there are many to be selected anyway.

Headphones, a Disappointment

Headphones seem cheaply made.
Why no volume buttons?
Why not use standard 3.5mm?
Did Sony assigned only one part time intern to design the headphones?
Are they not standard 3.5mm phones? Anyway, they seem at least as good to me as the phone Apple bundles with their products.

They are standard 3.5mm unless you don't have a Z Ultra.
Sony produce some of the best ear buds out there and these are no exception. Crystal clear and pumps out the bass.
If the standard length of cord supplied with the headphones is too long for you to reach your phone volume control, cut it.

Why no volume buttons? Those aren't standard. The only thing that truly is standard in a stereo headphone jack is the top/ring/sleeve design with 3 contacts and the 3.5mm size. The headphones that have volume buttons and/or action buttons use a non-standard additional contact, and devices which aren't designed with the non-standard headphones in mind can't even make use of the extra buttons, even if they may support other functionality with extra contacts. For example, my Galaxy Nexus can understand the action button on Apple earbuds, because it was made to expect that sort of functionality on the jack's extra contact, but it cannot understand the other volume buttons on the headphones as they are non-standard.

Actually using urbeats earpieces designed for HTC phone and it recognize the forward/backward buttons for volume up/down as well as the play and stop button that with a double push go to next track. Sony only put basic earpieces as all manufacturer, having volume on it or not does nothing to the quality. Never found basic earpieces giving a good quality, so nothing to cry about it.

I have just purchased the Samsung galaxy Note 3. I mention that to illustrate I am not biased to one brand.
In terms of sound reproduction, Sony are class leaders, they invented the 'Portable sound' technology. No standard headphones due justice to any of the branded phones they are sold with.
Sony head phones are the best available as an 'in the box' headphone BUT can be vastly improved on. Apple are amazingly among the worst?
I have a preference for Sennheiser and you can make a choice that suits your own ears.
If you don't like Sony sound reproduction I have no idea what to advise you? Oh and no in the box phones come with volume controls uless its a special offer.
Tell you what. I will exchange your Sony headphones for an unused pair of Samsung galaxy note headphones.:good:
What have you been using 'till this point? What brand of phone and have you tried other brands of headphone such as Sennheiser?
Regards.
I'm no audiophile (at all!), but i wouldn't say they're bad. I've noticed that thay aren't exactly pumping the bass like other more expensive ear plugs, but i personally think that the audio alone is fairly good. It's clean and it hits most tones, but again.. the bass is just not there. An EQ will quickly fix this though (yeah, i've tested it). If you're listening a lot to dance, trance, techno, dubstep, hip hop etc. then these won't cut it. If you listen to music with a lot of different instruments, then they'll be more suitable.
Again, i'm not an audiophile so these are just my personal thoughts.
The sony ones sound better than anything that I have that were "free". for free head phones they are good.

Really? I remember thinking they were too bass-heavy. Granted, I only used them while I was watching a movie, not actually listening to music, so maybe I need to give them another shot. However, I remember thinking they definitely sounded heavier in the bass than my XBA BT75 earbuds I normally use for music listening, which sound flatter and clearer to my ears.
EDIT: Yes, these stock Sony earbuds are definitely more bottom-heavy than my other ones. If anything, these need a bass cut, because they're bordering on being muddy. On the whole, they have a pretty obvious "smiley face" response, unsurprisingly. Lots of bass, and the high frequencies have been boosted as well--cymbals, for instance, are a little too "sizzly" for me.

seems like more incentive to invest in some good headphones or buy the SBH52
Head phones-ear buds. A quick explanation.
I will try and make this brief and simple. Head phones-ear buds can only produce or reproduce the sound that they are connected to, the source. Headphones come in various types, in ear, (the type that come with the mobile), open head phones (the sound they reproduce can be heard by others in the room) and closed back (in theory only the wearer can hear the sound.
Next, The source, in terms of Sony devices, is class leading especially at this price point. Standard in the box ear buds are there as part of the package, they do not faithfully reproduce what the source produces. Non of them.
Frequency response. This is the level of bass to the level of treble each head phone is rated. Examples Sennheiser CX300-11 in ear. Frequency response;19-2100Hz. Sennheiser CX400-11, 17-22,000Hz. Translated this means the CX400 will be able to reproduce deeper bass tones and higher treble tones thus the midrange should be as clear as a bell.
Please remember what in ear buds use as a bass chamber is part our outer and part inner in, as far as the timpani goes, the 'eardrum', If we use a very high volume ,especially with in ear buds, damage can and is done to our ear drum and hearing. With this in mind such an ear bud MUST be used with caution. As soon as we connect an ear phone to a Sony device the volume is automatically reduced to ensure we don't damage the ear.
Now, we have the source, in our case the mobile phone, and the reproduction, the ear bud. What will also count to the overall quality of reproduction are the connections. The plug the cable also the quality of the components used in the manufacture of the ear bud or head phone.
It is false economy and rather unwise to use the in box freebies. Spend between 40.00€ and 50.00€ and one can purchase an ear bud or on ear open or closed head phone that will knock your socks of. Is it worth it? This is a question of how you use your device. I use it first as a mobile phone, secondly as a way to send and receive SMS and thirdly to listen to music, with this in mind I purchase branded head phones and branded ear buds.
A brilliant starter for in ear buds is the Sennheiser CX300-11. For a portable open ear head phone I use the Sennheiser PX100-11. Both are industry leaders.
let me quickly add there is no such thing as 'the best', its choice, its what type of sound each of us prefers. I use Sennheiser as I enjoy the type of sound they produce and for the price involved I find them exceptional, there are numerous other brands to chose from.
DO NOT go and purchase any sort of ear bud or head phone costing hundreds of euros as the source will not provide the FR for the head phones to reproduce. One has to evaluate with care how to match ones device between source and speaker.
I hope this small missive may help some members who enjoy music.
Kind regards.
Thank you for a quality post, Johnson (yes, I'll keep calling you that). Say, what would you recommend to a person who listens a lot to bass filled music?

Sennheiser CX400-11. FR: 17-22000Hz for ear buds, and the Sennheiser PX100-11. FR: 15-27000Hz for open back on head ear phones (they are portable as they fold up).
I am not to fond of in ear buds even though I always carry a pair, I use the CX300-11.
For general use and a simply stunning sound with bass to rattle your teeth, I use the PX100-11. They come in white or black.
Remember its the source that will count and with the Sony Walkman being utilised NOT the Google play, the sound is clear, well balanced, deep and very well controlled. Mid range is simply spectacular. I enjoy a very wide cross section of music from classical to pop to what ever.
Again I must add that there is nothing 'wrong' with using a graphic equaliser. I don't as I enjoy the music as it was recorded BUT if you enjoy that extra bass then go for it. Do remember when you deepen the bass using a graphic equaliser you alter the stage sound as a whole. No problem if you enjoy a bass heavy sound.
The good point is you have a very high quality source with the Sony. As such I sincerely believe the device deserves a fitting head phone or ear bud.
let us know what you purchase.
Oh and don't forget top allow the ear bud or head phone to 'run in' for 48 hours before you make an assessment. That is very important.
Regards.

try something from Denon or Audio Technica!
I use the stock buds at work as they allow me to listen in on conversations of colleagues (meaning I can hear them when they try talking to me). If I want good sound away from home, I use a shure 215 se. There are pricier options, but for 100€ it's really great sound. At home I use a sennheiser MD 598 if I really want to have it like the musicians inteted their songs. But the sennheisers are open back and so sound gets out and my family is annoyed by that if they wantto watch TV. So I bought the Yamaha Pr 500. they are closed backs and almost don't leak sound, even if I use my Fiio alpen to crank it up. The Yamaha is a little tinted to the lower frequency side, but it sounds awesome to hear all the bass lines. And with EQ you van tweak the sound to your liking. But what I found is, that any over the ear headphones with big drivers really gives a much better sound stage. When using my big cans I almost always get back to live tracks over studio recordings, because it sounds as if you were standing in front of the stage. I recently had to thin out my music collection on SD card to make space for higher quality recordings. Now the minimum I use is 160 kbps and I have tracks up to 320. and the difference is amazing.
Sorry for this rather long post, but I hope you can get something out of it.

Agree. Headfi.org is great if you research audio stuff.
Another vote for head fi. Watch your wallet though. The headphone out on the Note 3 is very good. A high quality headphone is worth it. Personally I use a Vmoda m100 most of the time. It's a fantastic headphone if you like your bass. I also have a pair of Audiotechnica A900s which still sound amazing after 5 years since I purchased it. For ultimate portability I use Sennheiser IE8s which still blow me away with their bass and soundstage.
Good luck with your search. There are lots of good choices.

Yes, definitely. These come with different size buds and stabilizers depending on your ear size. I don't even know I'm wearing these when working out for long periods of time. They have another version with volume controls and mic for $30 more.

You can use over the ear headphones with the N3 but I wouldn't recommend it. I tried my Sennheiser HD650s plugged into the N3 and they sounded okay but not great, problem is the N3 doesn't really have enough power to drive them. Through a headphone amp or external DAC they should be fine, I tried the N3->HLLY SMK-III DAC->Sennheiser HD650 and that sounded awesome.

I have the Bose IE use it all the time and they are honestly phenomenal. Excellent sound quality, great bass balance, crisp yet clear and not overpowering. They also hold up well when I go to the gym or bike and run. Beats are better for headphones, Bower and Wilkins are decent, the rest are in my humble opinion often not that good or the sound balance I'm looking for. Overall if you can try anything first I would otherwise, you won't regret the Bose IE.

Hey mate thanks. I just bought RHA earbuds . Model is RHA MA750i. They are truly amazing . Uk based brand. Sound is what i wanted. Bassy, isolation and loudness. I went for bose or beats. But was discouraged for beats and for bose the earbuds do not provide complete isolation because they are not designed that way. I know class of bose but i think they work on accoustic , clarity and it seems the person singing is next to u. But i like bassy witb clarity. These rha caused a damage of 150$ but ib think they are worth. In such competitive market they have bring out something nice. Atleast i am liking them and built quality is par excellence. The wire is too thick that it seems to be a solid piece of earbuds. I m happy though

I would say it's all about personal preference - everyone's sensitivity is different, also it depends on the music you listen to and your preference of sound.
Saying that, I usually try sennheiser before anything else since in my DJing days they always had the best noise-cancelling high-volume headphones for noisy environments. But their budget headphones were not good.
Possibly an out-dated saying but one that has stuck with me because I've always found it to be true: "No highs, no lows, must be Bose". Although that was usually about their speakers, not headphones.
The other professional brand is Shure, they have a long history in professional audio so while I haven't tried them, if I were you I would give it a go.
If you cannot try them out, I suggest finding the models you're thinking of getting in Amazon.co.uk - they almost always have a lot of reviews by people who have bought them in the past - check out all the ratings from the 1-stars to the 5-stars. I find the 1, 2 and 3 stars to be helpful. If more than 10% of the reviews are either 1 or 2 stars then it's a sign that they're not very good.

What headset are you using?

So, I'm currently using the Bose QuietComfort 20 with my beautiful Z3 and aside from the stellar audio quality, I'm thinking of getting something else. I don't like the rectangular block on it and find that I don't use the noise cancelling as much as I thought I would. Perhaps because I'm typically using them while on the streets of NYC, and fear that if I cancel outside noise, I'll quickly become road-kill.
This leads me to my question - what is the best headset out their that still takes advantage of the phone's built-in audio settings (yes, including the noise cancellation)? My guess is that you need to use a Sony headset to be able to use the NC built in to the phone, and while I won't be a big user of it, for those rare times, I'd like to have the option. For my own purposes, I prefer in-ear/ear-buds.
So, what say you? What is the way to go? Let's perhaps offer suggestions with price not a factor, and another suggestion that considers cost.
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!
I use an MEElectronics M-Duo costs $50-60 but performs as good as many $100+, has very good reviews everywhere.
Its not very noise isolating, but its makes up for it in every other way. It can also take a lot of abuse. I prefer this to my $100 Bose IE2 earphones.

Thanks guys! I guess the question is, what functionality built into our Z3's do we lose when using non-Sony headsets and does it make it worth it to purchase one of the headsets listed within the device? The other question, is why are only those Sony headsets listed (see attached)? They make many other ones, some being highly rated!

HTC used to do the same during the Beats era, it justs sets an equalizer tuned to those Sony headsets, if I am correct.
When I want in-ears, I use Beyerdynamic MMX102IE. They work very well with the Z3 - great sound quality, bass and volume. If I'm going to listen to a podcast or something similar in a noisy environment, I'll use the MDR-NC31EM for the noise cancellation. The latter are good, especially for the price, but they are not as good as the Beyerdynamics for music.
I also use the Beyerdynamic Custom One Pros. They sound awesome, but sometimes I would like more volume from them. I do have a Fiio E6 that I can use them with if I really want to, but it would be nice to get some more power out of the phone. The sound quality is excellent.

So, based on your comments, I wet out and bought a pair of the SoundTrue Samsung Galaxy version. The middle button only increases volume or if I triple-click, it will skip to next song (while boosting volume 3 clicks). :crying: Not sure why it words for you and not for me - are you using the D6616 version? I cannot imagine this makes a difference, but maybe?
Thanks.

Personally, i found them to fit brilliantly, very comfortable, and to me ( i am not a audiophile sorry to say) sound really good, thank you for the link.
Likewise i thought they were a good fit, plus the sound from them sounded (to me) really good with lots of bass that you tend not to get with other stock headphones in ear that i have tried, but im no audiophile either.
As an audiophile I found them to be quite decent for stock headphones. The sound quality is definitely good. I haven't yet had the time to change the ear tips to fit my ears and test if they fall off easy or anything. That being said, I might stick to Bose earphones.
After reading that they are expensive, I was hoping for a way better experience. I like the EarPods/Airpods from Apple way more.
They have way more bass than my B&O headphones I got with the V20. I like'em

That makes me very happy to hear. The main reason I didn't purchase the V2O when it came out was I'd missed out on the pre-order and wouldn't be getting the B&O earbuds. I'm very happy with the AKG set that came with the phone, and really looking forward the the BT AKG headphones I just ordered this morning. That and the memory card I'm looking forward to, along with VR headset / controller.

I felt the sound quality was crystal clear. Treble and vocals are crisp but bass was on disappointing side. It isn't as punchier as the one's we get with HTC One series. Maybe I need to tweak equalizer more to get that heavier bass but default settings didn't sound deep enough. Again, I maybe wrong.
I'm pretty sure this is one more of those cases where you get a practically different product for different markets, but the ones I got in Serbia are pretty crappy :/ I'm no audiophile, but compared to my cheap Xiaomi Piston 3, these are so tinny, low-volume and just plain bad I was actually thrilled when I saw them, tried them right away, but just put them back in the box after 2 minutes...
They're not bad. Pretty clear high end and decent mids but somewhat underwhelming low-end. Still better than the buds that came with my S6E and Galaxy Tab 4 7.0.

I agree. The clarity is great. They def lack bass though. Not bad for free tho. And I appreciate the fabric overlay on the cord

I learned a while ago not to trust loose Samsung headsets.
I've bought replacements for 2 different Samsung "included" headsets, and in both cases the originally included headset sounded great while the replacements sounded cheap.
Their sound profile is slightly U shaped with emphasize on the bass & highs. Not really neutral or truly high end but by far the best stock earphones that I've ever heard.
I'm a musician and I own Sennheiser HD650, HD600, Shure SE425, Etymotic ER4P & AKG K702 with several dedicated headphone amps, so I know what I'm talking about...
I persoanlly think these headphones are the best of any inbox headphones I've ever used and I've used a lot.
Dont forget to use the equaliser aswell it can enhance the sounds for more clarity base and so on.
To be honest, they sound good but are poor in quality. They're cheap plastic and the right one on my pair has driver flex like crazy.
These AKG headphones are ip68/waterproof or not ?
I thought the stunk when I first tried them. I use PowerAmp and found that I had to go in and adjust the equalizer for both headphones and BT.
Very Happy Now!
I deleted Google Play Music before realizing that it was the default music player for the S8 series. I would assume it needs the same tweaks as Power Amp.
Do all the US variants S8's come with the AKG's in box?
