Oy!
So, Geohot released a one-click root tool for the Galaxy S5 earlier today, and it should - according to him, work on any device running firmwares 4.4.2 or earlier. I'm already rooted, but I installed it on my Ultra running stock 4.4.2, and it installed fine, and I guess it ran and finished, because it did what it said it would do (root and reboot within 15 seconds), and I didn't get any errors, BUT a person here with a non-rooted 4.4.2 device has to try it out before we can conclude that this does indeed work on the Ultra.
Confirmed working on the Xperia Z, Xperia T, Xperia E1, Xperia SP and possibly Z1 Compact (not confirmed)
How does it work?
NOTE: Towelroot does not actually install SuperSU, so install SuperSU from the Play Store after you've ran Towelroot and it has rebooted. If you can't update binaries in SuperSU, it's a bug.

If this doesn't work then there are the two exploits that were released over the weekend for the z2 and z1s. I wonder if they will work on 4.4.2 on a locked BL?
Great news! This is bringing a much welcome change.
Totally OT: Hacking pays! Geohot made around $18.000 for the towelroot, and I believe it was just back in March he found some exploits for ChromeOS and made $150.000 off of that. I'm extremely jelly. Time to learn how to read code >_<

those were just pledges. a pledge works like this, "I pledge $5 that someone can get this to work". That is it. I am in no way forced to follow through with my pledge. I am sure Geohot got some mad donations, but that $18,000 pledge reward was probably a stretch.
Now regarding the root. I read, very briefly, on reddit that this root process may not be as secure as others and may open you devices up to malware easier. Can anyone confirm this?

yup, it works ! ^^ , tks anyway!
i already rooted my x10A to the 23 rom, which version does this root ur X10 to? and btw anyone tested this on the X10A?
let me know!
thanks
Will it work for x10a???
Could this be the holy-grail (from a user standpoint at least) of rooting? I'd love to hear comments on it's success (I'm already running 026 rooted, otherwise I'd try it).
As much as I appreciate all the work the X10 root devs have put into getting root on this phone and providing a solution for we lowly masse: I'd love a single-step solution. Seeing solutions for other phones like the one-touch root for the Galaxy S and jailbreakme.com do make me a bit jealous.
I am on rooted 026 too, otherwise will have a try.
Anyway, if it is true, that would be great for it is easier to do. Could any dev check and see if this way has any inspiration to your work.

From a quick glance at it I'd say it's the X10 mini exploit packaged and automated into an apk. Since the exploit appears to be a generic userland exploit it would explain how it works on so many devices.

i was so excited that i reflashed and rerooted with this.
works a charm. fantastic!!!
the superuser is not working. whats the fix?
mine works perfectly with superuser privilege
i used another one from the other thread "X10Root" and it works perfectly. rooted after clean update via seus. now on R2BA026. it includes superuser.apk. i think this one doesnt.
tested, and proved to work perfectly. really convenient.
There is one big problem with this root method, I can't get ADB to work. Operations are not permitted :/
Right heres a really stupid question--Will this work with the Apps Installer app or no I need the SDK from Android.Im totally new to Android and just picked up an X10i.This root seems to be the easiest so far--Stuck on Vodafone Ireland @ Rf014 (I think) so I need to root and upgrade to a later version.
I'm scared to trying this should i give a shot?
works fantastically on my 26

i'm on 532 (root and recovery) and have been for a while. i've looked at a few threads in dev forum and can't find if there's a way to just flash to a newer version or if i have to go the long way round?

Yeah, just flash NUT's ROM
hmm, will give it a go this weekend then. cheers.
still waiting on 4G from Three and just realised i don't have an LTE option in mobile networks. think i might be on too old a version
Depends on what ftf you flashed to get 532. If it was [nut]'s one then I think it was based of my ftf so a non lte 6802. [Nut]'s rom is based of a 6833 ftf so will have lte

ah, that would be it then. will try it asap. really need the added upload speed. upped 190GB so far this month and some people around here are reporting 10 fold increase in upload speed
well that went screwy. bootloop. flashed straight to 290 ftf which works and i have LTE but i can't root it. grr
trying to go to 532 again and start from scratch even if i have to use vroot.

bootloop on flashing to 290 (NUTs guide) so went to 290 direct to recover but root didn't work.
now went back to 532 but that won't even pickup any cell connection at all.
i'm ready to throw this thing against the wall at the minute.

binarys app didn't work for root so got it via vroot again. now to figure out how to get to a newer rom with room that can have working cell data
Ah, i get it.
my IMEI is blank now somehow. hmm
ok, flashed it back to 290, unlocked bootloader again, used the all in 1 tool and now that seems to have stuck.

ASUS PADFONE S (X?)
They keep saying online that that X and S are the exact same? Well, I have the S with dock/tablet and I beg to differ. Please excuse this, not trying to hijack this thread. There are just so few of us. atm.
So far:
ROOT: TOWELROOT TR1 works perfectly on PadFone X and S Best to have SUPERSU, BUSYBOX, & ROOT CHECKER installed before rooting for ease of use after root.
TWRP Installs easily. Use this adb shell script for ASUS PadFone S only!:
Code:
adb shell "curl 'http://datbak.com/links/padfone_s/asus_t00n_twrp_2_7_1_1.img'>/sdcard/recovery.img; su -c 'dd if=/sdcard/recovery.img of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/recovery' bs=4096; sync; reboot recovery;"
Run> Allow SU> Reboots as normal> ASUS boot screen> black screen (TWRP is running but has the 'blackscreen bug')>wait 60 seconds>hit start button>TWRP appears> at TWRP settings reset timeout to 30 seconds or less (if you like.) We are waiting for the TWRP 2.8 update for these units, yes, it is in the works. The X version of TWRP (this thread) did not work for me on S.
XPOSED installs normally on S. Many features in Gravity Box etc. do not function perfectly because of the ASUS overlay. Lots of modules do work though. Please test for yourself. No issues so far with OS or root as of yet.
CHROMECAST MIRROR ENABLER v6 XDA LINK CHROMECAST MIRROR ENABLER works great on S.
X users please check to see if xposed and mirror enabler work for you too. :good:
BTW: ES File Manager writes to an exFAT 64GB microSD card after root and enabling the root tool. It's super fast and it's awesome! (Nexus 5 , iPhone 6, etc? Eat my dust.)
The more I use this phone, the more I like it!

And the main reason I wanted root on this nice device is GMD Gesture Control!
I was worried about how it would handle the switching displays, so I've just been trying things out. We need to override the multitouch device detection to 'asus_dds_sis_touch', then it works (only in tablet mode). So I have gestures in tablet mode, but not in phone mode (where they're less useful in my opinion). Will report in the GMD thread and ask the author what can be done. For example, running free GMD for phone mode?

What's wrong based on the quote? Yes it will work. Until the padfone S gets the L update (has not happened yet), in which case you'd need KIngroot instead (I think, have not bothered to update myself).

Root is not the same as TWRP nor Xposed.
If you're not very 'techy' (whatever that means) why do you want to root the phone in the first place? There's almost no reason to nowadays except for those with very specific requirements. And if you're not sure what TWRP and XPOSED are then you probably aren't in that group (no offense).

No offence taken I've rooted a few phones, but I've never done it myself, I've always paid someone to do it (just some tech guy I know and he's cheap but very good). Main reason I want the padfone rooted is to be able to use adblock and to get rid of the bloatware. The padfone is for my mam and she's a complete technophobe so I want as little unnecessary apps as possible on it and maybe to replace stock apps with other apps that might be easier to use for her..
So does anyone reckon rooting would be worth it for the above or am I best just to leave it be and not mess with it for fear of running into problems down the line?

I hope there's some development for this tablet.
Have had mine since release and I love it I own a Nexus7 2013 and it is as fast as that one , it so far has handled all the emulator games I have thrown at it like a champ I have loaded N64 games and some NDS games I got and has played them great. Also I love the fact I was able to add a 64GB micro in for extra storage well worth the 199.00$ price tag!
Got rooted with KingRoot and later replaced with SuperSu
See here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=61168022&postcount=30
Didn't try Xposed yet, but should work under SuperSu
Give exposed a try and let us know if it works. Thanks
I used King root and it worked just fine...until my son used it and did an update. Now it is bricked. Here's hoping that it becomes popular enough to have its own forum and someone creates a decent ROM for it.
For the price it has good (enough) resolution, color and speed.
Have you tried holding power and volume up for about 10 seconds to get into recovery and do wipe/reset?
I did. I can get into recovery, did wipe and restored factory but nothing. It looks like the files created by kingroot were not compatible with the update.

Anyone have an idea how to unroot this tablet? Looking to do the updates and it's not possible with root... Thanks!
After reading a post saying that there is no known root method for 35b, I set out to find one.
I am surprised to find out that rooting actually takes only five minutes, and does not require a computer.
You only need to go to http://kingroot.net/wap/ on your phone, scroll to the bottom, click download, make sure Settings -> Unknown sources is enabled, and install KingRoot apk when it is done downloading.
Open the app, scroll down until you see the 'Try it' button, click it, wait for the app to connect to its server, and press the big round button.
The app roots your phone and provides root access management without reboot. Enjoy!!!

Edit 1:
The Kingroot one-click-root application does not exist on the Play Store! Such rooting tools are considered malware/viruses for running exploits and are a violation of the guidelines and not permitted! The tool is safe, however; dont worry about it too much. The Kingroot and similarly named apps on the Play Store are fakes and do not do much of anything, hence the crappy reviews. Stop looking on the Play Store. That is entirely misleading.

My bad, then. I haven't seen anything.
Pardon my noobyness, but is there any chance of bricking with this method? I use my G3 as my daily driver, and if it gets screwed up, i'm toast...

Yes you can root 35b with kingroot and use SuperSume pro paid app or this guide to remove kingroot. If you do this you will still have stock recovery though so my advice is to keep reading and decide what you need/want to do.

But i really dont like the idea of using kingroot after i looked it up on playstore man im really confused here, you guys say its fine and works while the user reviews on all of the kingroot named apps say the app is useless.

Likewise, im just as hesitant as you are buddy I tried searching for the kingroot app on playstore, there were quite a few with the name so i decided to just give a look at all of them, and all of them had mostly negative reviews how it would stop at 90% and some of the users complained how their devices got bricked. This made me hesitant to proceed further with the app.
I will edit the post to steer you clear of some misunderstandings about Kingroot. Please read again, everyone.

I can confirm that this method works on 35B. I rooted last night, and it seems to be working okay. Although after trying my first root program, the phone got significantly hot. It also rebooted once. But after that it seemed to work fine, it just gets a little warm when using a root app. I think its because i chickened out and closed kingroot during the root process, causing the root to be just a tad messed up. An hour later i opened up kingroot again to fully root it and it was already rooted.
I am buying a new phone today, considering the G3 from verizon. My question is will it come with the 35B or the 46A update, and if it comes with the 46A update does this method still work? Sorry for my lack of knowledge, have never rooted a phone before but recently became interested. Thanks for any help
Worked perfect for me according to root checker
Worked flawlessly, rooted with Kingroot, then installed and ran Supersume Pro. Now fully rooted 5.1.1 with Supersu, not a trace of Kingroot left!
Working!
I confirm that work with vs985 35b, I follow the step right now I want to install marshmallow
