Crazy lag when writing notes? - Sony Xperia Z Ultra

Hey all.
I know this issue is known in some Sammy forums, so maybe it's an Android issue?
I take my XZU to the gym and use the Notes app to track progress. The note gets pretty long, and after some time every keyboard input takes 3 - 5 seconds before it shows up on screen - so writing 'squats: 80, 75' takes almost a minute! I'm using Swiftkey, which helps due to the predictive typing feature - but none the less I would've assumed XZU has the power to write notes without lag
Anyone know what causes this, or anyone else experiencing it?
Also, I've tried more than one note takin app. Issue persists.

I'm on a sprint galaxy nexus, but i use SwiftKey as my main keyboard of choice. The lag has been here, for me, since the last 2 updates. However, it seems that it got worse on the latest update. I do like the new themes though [emoji4]

Try using the stock keyboard? Also check Swiftkey's resource usage when it starts to lag. I have written quite a lot on my Ultra, and I have never experienced any slowdowns that I can remember, but I don't use Swiftkey.

I just tried stock, same thing - about one sec delay or more for every keystroke.
As it isn't keyboard related, any other tips? This only happens when I use Notes luckily, but it does irk me.

As an alternative to fixing the slow notes, have you tried using apps specifically designed for logging workouts? They'll probably save you time and give you a better overview.

Then it's probably the notes app you're using. Try using a different one and see if that solves it.

I could, and maybe should do that. It's just that I fear it might be more time consuming than just typing in exercise, reps and sets - plus it allows for much more customization. I'll look around the playstore though, might find something that serves my purpose.

Already mentioned that I did. I use the stock Notes app that came with the rom (Monx), and tried Natural Notes as well. The lag across apps is what made me post here, thinking it might be an Android issue - apparently not

Can someone test Swype for me?

Hey guys!
I have a small favor to ask, and I figure this is probably the best place. I was wondering if anyone with the Note could open up a quick text message with Swype on and try something for me.
When the keyboard pops up, take your index finger and swipe back and forth very quickly on the letters. You don't have to type anything specific, just go back and forth fast.
Could you let me know which of the two scenarios occur?
1) Nothing happens until you finally stop swiping and when you do, you get one long word and/or a message saying that it wasn't recognized; or,
2) You get a bunch of small words that are being entered WHILE you're going back and forth.
One of these two have to result, and I found some inconsistencies with the touch screen today.
Thanks <33
Both occur depending on speed when I go at the speed I would have used on my Captivate it breaks it up into little words (used swype for almost two years so quickly) but when I slow down it works normally. I found this issue out when I first got my phone and sadly had to switch from swype as I cant swype near "full speed".

Ok, so I'm assuming that you're saying your Note is affected by this as well?
I ask because I was in the vicinity of a few other Notes today. The issue was confirmed on 2 out of the 5 devices. You could not force the Swype to break on the other 3 no matter how insanely fast you swiped. I have a feeling the issue is a little more wide-spread that I had originally thought. Swype is literally unusable for me in this state, I can't swipe nearly as fast as I'm used to, and it causes me to actually type way slower than I'm used to because of it. I have a replacement on the way, but I wanted to dig a little into the problem in the meantime.
Edit:
I wanted to add, it doesn't matter which rom I'm on, which version of Android, or which version of Swype. I've tried it all.
I don't have any issues on mine. I do use the s pen tho. Pretty damn fast too. Quick question though, do you usually Swype back and forth whilst typing etc.

Swiping back and forth is just a surefire way to reproduce the problem. For someone that swipes fast, it makes the problem a real issue. A friend of mine on an unaffected Note tried using mine to swype and he instantly recognized that he wasn't able to.

Yes it also affects my note making it impossible to use swype. I figured this is true for all notes. And same doesn't matter it simply doesn't work though it may be my screen protector do you have one?

I'm on DAGr8's A2 and I'm using Swype version 3.26.92D.38303.t0.8611.ENSP from the International Note forum.
Edit: I have had the short word issue in the past on GB on the Note. I hadn't tried it on ICS yet. Just out of curiosity, and only because I just did this, what happens if you boot into CWM and format cache (not dalvik). It's the option under mounts and storage -> format cache. I did it just before this because of the CWM log errors on ICS.

Sounds like you have a good Note.
I've formatted the cache partition about 40 times since I've had the Note. My problem persists through all of that. It was an issue with the stock GB, and DAG's ROM, and the ICS roms that I'm testing now. They are all the same.
I am envious of you. Hopefully my new one will work right.
Other tweaks I've made since upgrading to ICS has been to reduce my animation transitions to .5x (from 1x) and reduce VM heap from 256 to 128.
Just trying to think of any little thing that might help for some reason.
Edit: also have 2D rendering forced on in developer settings.

Unfortunately none of the tweaks seemed to help.. but I'll continue to play with things while I wait for the replacement device . Thanks again!
Mine will not enter words until I finish no matter how fast I go. I've never had issues with my swype. I use the s.pen and a glas.t protector. Using the swype version from the international forums. On saurom r6. haven't changed any swype settings.

Edit: interesting. just tried the same using my finger instead. get short words a lot. sometimes none, but often it starts breaking it up. So I think someone else reported this same finding so it must lie somewhere within that. To me though I hate using swype with my finger. Unless I just washed my hands there's way too much drag to swype quickly. With the s.pen I can go twice as fast and oddly enough this issue does not appear.

Yep, that's the issue. I dislike using the s-pen for Swype, but that's totally a preference thing. I can go as fast as I need to with my finger, most of the time.
There is a variable here somewhere. You are inflicted with the same issue with your finger that a couple of us have, where I've personally tested this on two Notes where I could confirm it wasn't a problem. I hate to just think it's some flaw in the touch screens, but I don't know what else to try.

I'll have to flash up again later. I'm currently testing an unannounced and unreleased ROM so I have to be careful which heavily modified files go out.
Are you on GB or ICS? I'll go stock later, confirm that the problem is still there, then I'll upload it.
I'm on ICS.
And I'm curious what you're testing...

My SPen Reset App

Hello. I wrote an app to deal with a problem with the SPen on my N7000 Samsung Note. Not sure if it will work on other Note models but would appreciate someone trying it out and telling me if it works on their device as well. Please see my original posting here. Thanks
Downloading, what problems have you been having?

The problem was mostly one of the accuracy of the Spen drifting over time. It was most evident in the position of the "floating" pointer that is optional on my Note N7000. So over time the floating pointer started to drift further and further from the SPen's actual tip. As this happened the accuracy of SPen touches would decline. Others have posted on the internet about this. I believe the posts I saw were about the N7000. So I am not sure if this occurs on the carrier-branded units as well. Thanks for letting me know if this works for you (although I hope you don't have the problem in the first place).
So this app is meant for non-stock roms I am assuming, since one could use the #combination to re-calibrate the s-pen from the dialer app?

Actually, I am on standard Touchwiz ICS 4.0.4 on my N7000 Note. I do have it rooted and am using the Hydracore Kernel to avoid the brick bug. I am not sure about the #combination to which you refer. I have run something from the dialer that allowed me to test the touchscreen by filling in some space around the screen and across the middle (up and down). But:
(a) that did not seem to do anything for my problem and
(b) it was a pain and time consuming since my spen starts drifting pretty quickly judging from the floating pointer
Cheers
I had the same floating problem with my stylus and this is what I did.

Thanks for this. But fortunately, from what I have read, this isn't the problem I have been having with my SPen. Thankfully, my SPen's condition is far less severe. And the reset that my app is performing seems to be all that is needed. However, it is needed on a regular basis. I am running my app on a regular schedule automatically now.
That's good to hear, when I first bought mine AT&T said it was supposed to do that and there is nothing wrong and maybe I didn't know how to use the Spen. LMAO
I also found this if anyone wants to play with the hardware of the Spen http://phandroid.com/2012/12/05/how-to-adjust-s-pen/

Hello and sorry to hear of the problem you are having. I am not sure, but I doubt if my app will do anything regarding this problem. It certainly wasn't designed to address this. First, are you sure that vibrate preferences are set correctly? Have you tried powering off and restarting the phone? I can say that I recently had this or a similar problem on my Note N7000 phone when I updated the custom kernel I am using (HydraCore) from version 4.3b to the latest release. In this case, others had already reported the issue to the custom kernel's author. I think that HydraCore is specifically for the N7000 but it might be that you have a customs kernel that suffers from the same sort of thing. Good luck!
App Now On App Store
I have paid Google and have posted this app on the Play Store. I have also been at work on a new version that will incorporate a more complete UI (easy to be more complete that what is in this version), scheduled operations, and the ability to toggle auto-rotate as well as dominant hand (as some sources claim this helps with issues related to landscape versus portrait mode). Thanks to all for your feedback as this has encouraged me to go further!
Reset Spen Pro Now Available
A low priced version of this app is now available on the Play Market. It offers additional convenience and other features including scheduled background operation and suppression of success messages. If the free version works on your device, I hope you will consider the Pro version. Thanks!
Honestly do not do a thing to this app it is amazing does exactly what it needs to do and super simple just open the app and its do

Pros, Cons, solutions, workarounds and opinions

Me and some other guys kinda highjacked another thread so I decided to open a new one here for people to share their opinions, thought and general arguments and if there are easy solutions to the matters that the DNA makes you sad, I did look through the first 10 pages of this section and didn't find anything similar so people, bash away, and bear in mind that what you say will shape my (and others) opinion and whether I should or shouldn't buy this damn amazing piece of equipment
This seems like a good idea, and I can definitely see this helping a lot of people. I'm extremely happy with my DNA thus far; stellar battery life and performance, and the build quality is superb (especially the literal edge-to-edge glass that feels like it flows off the front of the screen). It's also quite resilient - I had it sitting in the passenger seat of my car, got into a pretty serious accident, and the phone doesn't have a single scratch on it. Obviously I got very lucky, but yeah..
On another note, my only gripe is that I can't seem to delete 3 of the stock bookmarks (Google, VZW Home Page, and Your Guide Mobile). I've tried clearing the app data, but that didn't help. I'm not rooted, but I'd think there should be some sort of workaround.. any tips would be appreciated

I don't think that without root you'll be able to delete them, not sure though and I'm not suggesting you should root cause apart from the warranty being void there's always a risk of bricking, small but is there... I guess for now you gotta live with it.
One thing that annoyed me about the DNA is that they chose to put Back, Menu, and Multitasking as the buttons. So you still have to have the 3-dot menu on screen. Luckily, if you root the device, you can change the multitasking button to Settings (which is exactly what I wanted), so I'm thrilled to have that. The bloatware remover is great as well.
If you aren't afraid to root it, there is awesome stuff out there for it. I won't be using a rom without Sense because I actually like Sense a lot. The lock screen and camera software are the best that I've seen.
The USB flap is annoying, but I will definitely be getting a wireless charger.

Ah, alright. I'm planning on rooting it eventually.. at some point.. but as you said, there's always that risk lol. Plus, beyond that small issue with the 3 bookmarks, everything else about the phone is perfect even without root, so I can live with it Thanks for your input though!

That's a good idea too. I almost never use the stock browser anyway. Boat browser has been pretty good to me as well although any of these would work. What I like about 3rd party browsers probably the most (aside from features) is the fact that I can exit the browser. With the stock one it will just keep running even if you back out of it.

My biggest gripe (besides the 3 dot menu button) is the damn messaging app. Every single time I go into it, it 'refreshes.' So many times the app takes a few seconds to load and it shows everyone's phone numbers instead of the names. I just don't understand why.
I'm hesitant to switch to another messaging app because 1) I think they're ugly/love the look of the Sense app and 2) I love how I can see a new message on the Sense lock screen and swipe directly into it.

It sounds kinda weird, how many contacts and messages do you have? if it's not thousands I guess there might be something wrong
try another messaging app to see if it's persistant or just the sense messaging
I don't have that many contacts, and I definitely don't have that many messages. I limit it to 200 per thread (only a few people reach this), and I even go through and delete it down to like 10 threads that are the most important. Regardless, this shouldn't happen on a phone with 2GB of RAM. Frustrates me to no end.
I posted a thread about this in this section maybe a week or two ago, and a few users chimed in saying they were seeing similar behavior. I don't think it's just me.
Mine does the refresh on sms too. Its like 1 second though so not a big deal.
Had the phone for a week. Battery life has been excellent. This is the first time in 2 years I havent had to charge my phone at work at all. Consistently get well over 4 hours screen on time. Although I've noticed using non-sense launcher its not quite as good but still excellent.
The screen is amazing and even at 5 inches it fits comfortably in the hand. Even pushing this many pixels I have yet to notice anything id call lag.
The 3-dot menu can be annoying if you notice it. Hoping for an update somewhere to deal with that at some point. I've also had issues with Netflix not loading properly but I blame the app. Also, I've noticed when I change lockscreen style, like to productivity or something it doesn't work too smoothly. Not being able to change wallpaper on a screen longpress kinda baffles me as well.
The phone definitely has some quirks and some areas where HTC could have made the operation of things more efficient instead of adding unnecessary steps. But I would definitely recommend this phone to anyone it is really a pleasure to use.

Input lag issues

Hello guys, new to Android and sorry for posting this but I searched Google and the HTC one forums and I haven't seen anyone or heard any negatives about slow downs or input lag here and there like I have been experiencing with the One.
Every review I have read has praised the One for the non-existent lag and that everything seems very smooth.
My problems: Tapping URLs or text boxes sometimes require 2-4 presses.
Browsers seem a little sluggish scrolling around.
Has anyone else felt lag or input/touch response problems? Any tips or tricks to alleviate these issues?
Thanks so much in advance..

If you are coming from an iphone, you will notice input "lag". Its not that the phone lags compare to iphone, it is just that it takes more movement from your fingers before it scrolls. I use both iphone and android so I notice it a lot. Also scrolling on android is still somehow not as smooth as iphone. But mainly due to sense not being as smooth as a pure AOSP rom.
Hope that helps

I have that experience with the stock browser. I'm using chrome and it's not as noticeable. I think the input issues is a software bug. It happens to me with the home button, back button, and sometimes in other apps. I've had just about every android and iPhone 4s and 5 and the other android devices (note, note 2, HTC one x, etc) not the same issues. It's irritating

Ah, yeah I am coming from iPhones.. I mostly notice it in text boxes having to repeatedly press a link, url box, or any other input box.. I feel like maybe the sensitivity is lacking? I played with my friends galaxy s3 today and the ui seemed quicker as well.. do I have a faulty unit? Love the phone otherwise ..

This is an odd issue, and one I cant say I have. Have you tried another browser, such as chrome or chrome beta?
>Browsers seem a little sluggish scrolling around.
Still probably browser related, though the only browser that seems to have most of this worked out on android is firefox, and even then it's not nearly as smooth as iOS's webpage scrolling. I have no idea why.
The only thing I could think of would be to try other browsers and see if you like one more than the stock. Android has always had a subtle amount of touch lag, and custom UI skins seem to make it worse. touchwiz on my note 2 was almost unbearable. I haven't had much of a problem with it on the one so far though.

I am using the chrome browser right now. For instance I had to click refresh 4 times just now to refresh.. it's inconsistent and happens when it wants to.. I also get this when entering new contacts like when editing contact's name.

That's weird as hell. may I ask what build it says your on? I have noticed that the sensitivity seems to be turned down just a bit compared to some other devices I've owned in the past, but I adapted rather quickly to making my presses more deliberate. I don't really find it that troublesome, this may or may not be because I owned a droid 2 (god that thing was almost as bad as resistive touch screens when it came to sensitivity, I will never complain about a touch screen after that thing.).
This is a ****ty solution, but I'd say just learn to press a little more deliberately, and hope that it is indeed a software issue and that CM 10.1 fixes it when we get a build out for our device.
But maybe it is bad hardware on your end. Go into a store and play with the display unit, see if maybe it doesn't have it. Then you can just ask for a replacement.
Strange. I use the iPhone and different Android devices. And so far with the ONE I am not getting the lag and slow down I see at times with older Android devices. My stock Nexus 7 gets lag bad at times.

my build is 1.26.502.10 CL166754. I will try to make it to a AT&T store to play with one soon.
Hi guys, I wanted to give you guys an update. So yesterday I finally got my 64GB replacement... It was a faulty screen i had and for some reason it felt slower like lag issues. The new one is a night and day difference. HOWEVER... Now my 2nd one is plagued with slight gap issues on top and bottom which isn't a huge deal to me BUT.. ontop of that I have one dead pixel.. geez.. This is very sad as I am Taiwanese and I was hoping to support HTC.. Horrible QC.. Should I try my luck? Only problem is that I don't think stores are stocking the 64GB models... ugh.

replacements for stock apps?

I'm thinking about giving CM11 a try, but worried about some of the stock apps that I will no longer have, specifically anything that makes use of the s-pen. I'm wondering if there are usable replacements for things like S Note, Action Memos, Screen Writing, etc. Also, if anyone has a suggestion for the best replacement for the camera app, since that has a lot of features stock doesn't have

In the Play Store, CM S Pen Add-on and Note Buddy (S Pen Helper), for S Pen functionality. Papyrus and/or Memo (by Nathan Garside), for Note taking.
Try this, for a more full featured camera: http://galaxy-note-3.wonderhowto.co...your-galaxy-note-3-0150388/#readsoruce_bottom

Thanks, I tend to "collect" camera apps, hadn't heard of this one.

Well, the first time I used it, it locked up my phone? (not exactly sure what happened, because I was letting a friend use it to take a pic, he tried and said "Huh? what happened? The screen is off... Wont turn on...". Battery pull. Hasn't happened since...)
But otherwise seems smart, well laid out, responsive, the effects seem well chosen and plentiful... But using 90% of them introduces major viewfinder lag. (most time I don't use effects, perhaps a bit of vignetting, contrast push, so no real loss there.)
Couple of translation oddities in some functions, and the weibo stuff seems superfluous...
All in all, I like it, will play a bit more, not sure if it will be a complete replacement for say Vignette, but might for the stock..

Hmmm, that's interesting. I didn't experience any of those issues, when I was using it. Thanks for the update.
