[Q] Before I make the jump from iPhone - Xperia Z2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Currently I own an iPhone 5s. Love the thing all around, but android has a spot in my heart as being the first smartphone to own. I wanted the Necus 5, but after reading up on the Xperia Z1/2, I want one of these a lot more. Now I'm with t-mobile on the jump program, but my iPhone is about 60% paid off. I have a few questions here.
•Tmobile has the Xperia Z and Zs. I've read this was mistaken to be the Z2, but then I read the specs were slightly off. The Z2 being a little bit better, but not hundreds of dollars more. If I could I want the Z2, but it looks like the only way to get it is to buy the unlocked international version for the full $600, right?
•With that in mind for anyone who has made the switch from i5 to this phone or one of the too android phones have you regretted it all. I don't want to get the feeling of wishing I had my i5 back or paid it off first. Lol
•Speaking on the Z1s if any of you have one or have fooled with one, how much different is it than the Z2? If it's not noticeable then I wouldn't mind barring the jump plan and getting ahold of the Xperia Z that way. Oh and yes, I will be rooting, customizing and all things of the sort. It's why I love android so I have to do that. Wait, are there plenty of mods and stuff for both the Xperia or is it limited? I know my nexus 4 had a lot.

If you will buy a Sony phone, Z2 is the best and only choice as of now. The only Sony phone better than Z2 is Xperia C with its huge battery life but that's about it. T2 Ultra battery life is also good but it's too big for me. In spite of what people say, there is a big enough difference with Z1 and Z2 but if you already bought the Z1, then no need to upgrade unless you have extra cash. Z2 to Z3 might even have a smaller difference unless Sony puts their A game and surprises us with Z3.
If you're coming from Z, it's really worth upgrading to Z2 because it fixed all the flaws of Z even though the design of Z is a little better than Z2 for me.

I was referring to the Z1s though, not just the Z1. It seems to be what Tmobile got instead of the Z2, which is in other countries.

I have an iPhone 5, which is not really that different to the 5s. I jumped ship a while ago.
This is not the first time I tried to switch to android. I hated android before on Motorola milestone and galaxy s3, but I have to say I'm really loving this phone. Sure, at the beginning I kinda missed my iphone as I wasn't really used to it. After I got everything going, this phone has been great. I especially love the noise cancelling. (without it I wouldn't have purchased it at the first place) it works just as well as those dedicated noise cancelling headphones, in my opinion.
The only things I miss on my iPhone right are the smaller screen, imessage and iTunes. Big screen is not really my thing... 4.5-4.7 inch would have been perfect.
Every phone has its pros and cons. Long story short, I don't regret switching to it at all.

There isn't much difference between Z1 and Z1s so Z2 is still the better phone. Z1 should have been the Z2 if Sony didn't skimped on the specs. Sony could have stopped Samsung's momentum last year. But still a job well done for Z2. If you have a friend that has a Z2, try feeling it because it's really hard to judge the phone without seeing it personally.

[Q] Xperia S or Xperia P?

I wonder if it is a good idea to wait for Xperia P than to buy huge Xperia S.
Used Galaxy Ace for over 7 months and now I sold it. Thought to buy an S2 but I just hate that shape. No more samsung!!!
Always wanted to get my hands on Xperia Arc but many other good phones are out there now in the market. Like HTC Sensation XE, Galaxy S2, etc. People will laugh if I buy an arc now. But still arc is taking over my mind because its cost is very low now compared to other phones.
I already have 630$ in my amazon.com account (as gift card balance), but I have to add some $ 80 to it to buy Xperia S and ship it to India.
I prefer Xperia P over Xperia S coz:
Smaller in size (just 4.5mm width difference but I think it matters)
8MP is enough for me
HD screen is not a must (540X960 pixels is fine)
I don't want a HD front Camera (I don't want a front camera at all for another one or two years).
But S is better over P because of 32GB storage, 1.5GHz. Well at least I have to say myself that P costs less.
What I want to do now is buy an arc, use it for 4 or 5 months, then sell it and buy the Xperia P. By the end of april sure P will be released. And after another 2 months its price will also be reduced much, like all sony phones does.
What say, friends? Now should I buy Xperia S or Arc?
The S supports USB OTG as well, it's in another thread
it's your money, I like the S because of the speed, camera, size, and looks.
Ultimately it's what you think about the two, the P has the looks, but the rest isn't doing it for me

IMO it will be stupid to buy a Arc now only to sell it again in a few months. But that just me. If you have S2 now you have big screen. And after my experince once you got a big screen you never go back. Same with televisions. And besides the arc has nearly the same size screen as the S. So i don't see your logic? Games and pictures and video is so much better on a high resolution big screen. And if you wait for the P alot other mobiles will be released by then, and then you can't decide again.
Your argument about front faced camera, well i don't realy undestand it. I doubt i'll ever use my front faced camera other than taking pictures of my self. So nobody says you have to use it and you barley notice it on the S.
Buy the S. It's a great phone just like the Arc was. The Arc was also the flagship and the followers was Neo, Pro and play. The Sony Xperia S is also the flagship the U and P are just limited editions followers.
Buy the flagship.

So you think the Xperia S is too big but you are thinking of an S II?
I like handsets that i can operate with 1 hand. Its the main reason i walked away from the Galaxy Nexus Prime.
I had the X10 and the Xperia S is 5-10mm taller and a couple of mm wider.
I have no problem driving this animal with 1 hand.
Sony's policy (until now it seems) was to release a flagship model 2010 was the X10, 2011 was the Arc and this year is the 'S' until August anyway. Then they released a mid and lower range handset.
I know that if i got the lesser models i would always wishing i got the flagship instead.
Just my personal feelings and obviously you do as you please.
Just don't make a decision on what you think.
Get down to a mobile phone shop and get your choices in your hands. Your choice would be at least then justified and not on guess work.

I posted some early impression of the Xperia S HERE with some pics of Xperia S against arc.
- If you had any screen bigger than 4.0, Xperia P will be small
- Dual Core 1GHz should be enough but 1.5GHz could help you with some apps later
-There are differences between the two and Xperia S tops it out. I felt in love with Xperia P aluminum unibody and the fact doesn't have flaps for USB connection but once I got the Xperia S I forgot all of those fact.
Xperia S is good built quality phone to the extends that Xperia ARC feels like a little toy in front of it. Flap doesn't bother me at all and made the whole phone experience even better (as far as look)
You could always buy the Xperia S and then sell it whenever you want.
Good luck mate,

Flaps don't bother me also, when I'm thinking about using them.
What really bothers me is that, because the Xperia S has these flaps, this probably means that the Smart Dock Acessory that's available for both Xperia P and Xperia Ion does not work or is not supposed to work on Xperia S, which is supposed to be the company's flagship...

Yeah i'm slightly confused that Sony haven't made a dock for the S either. What with Ubuntu coming to Android this would have been an awesome accessory. Come home from work, dock the phone in and fire up a full fledged OS and carry on with work on a bigger screen. Obviously we can still do this with the HDMI out and the USB but seems a missed oppertunity.
i read somewhere that xperia s would work with livedock.. which is a lot better deal considering it won't go irrelevant once u upgrade your phone..

The sola is a whole other device with the floating touch thing and not really in the same ballpark even as the S and the P.
It's got only a 5MP camera
1Ghz Dual Core
3.7"
512MB RAM
No secondary camera
Apparently from what i'm reading: No Bravia engine
It does have the Novathor u8500 chipset though?
Sola vs S specs: http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=4408&idPhone2=4369
Sola vs P specs: http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=4408&idPhone2=4436
I think it's just meant to be a sort of a flagship floating touch phone with that being the main focus.
S is the mobile at the moment.
I have ordered it already and may get it in my hands by tomorrow.
Thank you guys for the suggestions.

I just don't know what to get. Help me!
Hello!
What's up? *insert ceiling joke here*
I'm going to tell you a funny story.
In January, I ordered the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S but it took so long to arrive and I fell in love with the SXS, so I cancelled!
I was sure to get the SXS but then I saw the P and asked myself 'do I really need a high-end model? As long as it has 1Gb ram it's cool for me. Right?' I got no answer.
The SXP looks very appealing... Not only for the dock, but for it's built and size...and in red is just stunning
I'm getting tired of waiting...and being confuse. I really want to try android... So many cool stuff to do.
I want to hear your opinions.

Dude.. Its not at all funny. It completely makes sense.
Frankly I felt the same thing as you. Arc S is a great phone and I always wanted to get it in my hands. But when SXS and SXP were announced I felt it is worth waiting for them.
Also I felt like 'Do I really need a high-end mobile?' (just like you felt). That is why I opened this thread.
SXP is a good one but its not yet launched.
Now if you can't wait to get an android mobile and if you can afford to buy a high end mobile then it is completely worth buying an SXS. Previously I used 'Galaxy Ace' and now am having a great time after getting the SXS. The mobile is simply amazing.
Also do check 'HTC One X'. It is also a high end model and it comes with ICS. But personally I love Sony. Also One X is longer and wider compared to SXS. Hence I went for SXS.

Lol in this case it's dudette.
I checked out the HTC One X and the One S but, HTC fans please forgive, it's not as beautiful as the SXS. Sony adds that mojo that makes you fall in love. Plus, I know SenseUI is pretty and has lots of tweaks however Sony's simplicity is pure win.
I'm going to wait a bit for the P, to hear about it from people who use it daily. Then I'll decide which to buy. I have to choose wisely, I'll be with one of them for 2 years

Hey! If you are going to wait for P to launch then there is nothing big to decide. Like I said previously, if you can afford to buy a high end mobile then SXS would be ideal option to choose. If you feel like high end mobile is not necessary then surely SXP would be the one for you. The point is both are quality mobiles in their range.
Even after the launch of P you cannot get proper opinions comparing them. Both come under different range. I am sure both users will say S is good (its sony's flagship afterall, isn't it?). Like I said, it all comes down to whether you can afford for it or not.
And it would be silly if you buy the S after the release of P because you like S more. I mean the wait would be meaningless, right?
Keep reading the reviews of SXS. I am sure you are doing it now. Also what do you feel about SGSIII?
I would say that the Xperia P is the smallest brother to Xperia S.
I was also thinking about Xperia P, but I wanted a little bit bigger screen, but with bigger screen, it means bigger phone. It's not very comfy to control the Xperia S with only one hand. I'm a teenager so I don't have big man hands.
And Xperia P was not available in my country at that time, and I desperatly needed a phone, so there was no other choice then Xperia S.
But I think I get used to this big Xperia S phone. It would be even more perfect if it wasn't that tall (tricky to control the phone with only the thumb over the big area of screen).
But if I went for the Xperia P, it would be like my old Xperia X10, with 1GHz processor, 8MP and same screen size, so upgrading wouldnt be that big of a deal, so I just went for something good when I already was buying a new phone in 2012!
Good luck chosing your phone!

[Q] Tell me more about the Xperia S feeling

I would like to buy an Xperia S, but before that, I have some few questions.
1. Sony launched many smartphones this year with relatively the same concept and specifications. Xperia acro S, acro HD, ion, GX, NX, T, V - what's really the difference? Are these devices better than Xperia S?
2. Is the camera good or not as good as you expected?
3. The battery life. Is it really that bad?
4. The weight and size. Does it feel good in your hand or while speaking? Or is it very uncomfortable?
5. How is it after a few months of ownership? Are you satisfied? Do you want to sell it and buy a HTC/Samung device instead?
6. Choosing Xperia S for the nexus-like updates in the future is the right decission?
Please leave some fair replies. Thanks!

1. The T/TX/V are the new series, those have MSM8960 and stuff, so it should be faster. acro S, acro HD, Ion are all based on the same board as the XPS, it's the specific features and/or regions (Japan) that differ.
2. Better than most of the competition, still not as good in low light.
3. Absolutely not. A day of battery life is normal.
4. I like it. But I also hate anything that's above 4.3" hardware keys and above 4.8" navbar.
5. I can't say I'm absolutely satisfied, but I like it.
6. Nexus-like updates (directly from Google) will never happen. However, Sony is involved in AOSP closer than most other vendors, and that might lead to speedier updates in the future. For now they still fail to deliver timely updates as they have a ****ton of devices.
I say you should wait for the next Nexus. If the rumor is true, and there are multiple Nexii this year, one of them is very likely to be produced by Sony (and most likely based on the same 'blue' board as the T/TX/V series). Then you'll see the price and decide. The S is a nice smartphone in its own right, but a Sony MSM8960 based Nexus is a whole different story.
I love my S but there are a few things that aint so great such as the home, back and menu buttons that aren't really buttons, the fact that sony will take forever to roll out a 4.1 update and that the camera doesn't take 12mp photos in fullscreen (only 4:3 mode) also theres no expansion slots for a micro sd card.
But other than that i think the phone is amazing, the size isn't really an issue for me as Ive got big hands and anyway you need it to be pretty big for that lovely 720p screen.
what convinced me to get one was the great UI that sony always do a good job of and 'Playstation Certified' but that was a bit of a dissapointment as theres only 14 or so ps1 titles for it atm.
Another bonus is i know someone with a U and i love rubbing it in that my phone is much better :victory:
Overall its miles ahead of the X8 i had previosly and the gaming aspect is nothing other than brilliant if you get one make sure to get titles like Dead Trigger, GTA3, max payne and Shadowgun to name a few

1. The newer GX,T,V and such are better phones but pricier and arguably not as good looking. (The Xperia S is a damn good looking phone.)
2. The camera is better than I expected and if you use a third party app or modded camera apk it will look even better.
3. Battery life is fine, dont listen to whiners. It all depends on rom and kernel but on stock it easily makes it through the day.
4. Its a very comfortable phone to use, though i have mine in a case so I can just throw it on the table and not worry about it.
5. I love my phone and would NEVER trade it for a crummy Samsung. I would consider an HTC because I am originally from the HTC camp, but their latest phones havent had everything I wanted and Sense is a joke compared to Sony android implementation.
6. The only phone that will have Nexus-like updates is a Nexus, though the Xperia S was recently added to AOSP which may or may not increase releases. We have working versions of all the major roms though, CM9/10, AOKP, MIUI, so there is something for everyone. We may not have the quantity of Roms but there are enough good ones to choose from, though I do wish we had more developers. Hopefully it will get better.
If you like the look of it and the price is good wherever you are located, then go for it. You will be happy with it overall. Hell I would sell you mine if I thought there was another phone better than my S that I would like but there isnt. I could go for the T, but it really isnt much better and the design is worse in my eyes. I will see if the next nexus is any good.

[Q] Good replacement for Nexus 5?

Took my Nexus 5 swimming (oops). I need a new phone and the unlocked Play Edition Xperia is tempting. Do y'all like the phone? Any complaints? I really dig ny N5 and will likely get another-just seems like the Xperia is a great value.
Try the normal sony xzu. You can flash GPE over it. But you can't flash normal sony Rom on GPE xzu. It's a very special phone. It is really huge and you can't use it with one hand. If you want an Xperia in general get the Z1 or the new Z2. Otherwise if you really want to get a big screen like this one. Don't hold yourself back. It has a very neat design. Its very stable fast and pretty good. I love it but soooometimes it feels too big but then it's ok again. You should go into a random store where they sell it and you should hold it first before you buy it.

Z Ultra is an awesome phone and i really love mine, and despite having both Note 3 and the Z Ultra C6833 and love'em both...
But stick to the Nexus 5... its better for you to buy a new one mainly because it has AWESOME support
I just came from a nexus 5 and this phone is just as fast.
Unlocking the bootloader and root and recovery are done in a completely different way but not any more difficult. I love the phone I was extremely hesitant to buy it and nervous that I made the wrong decision.
But no regrets, I don't take a lot of pictures and that would be the only negative I could give this phone, gaming on it is awesome.

Stick to your Z Ultra until the new version arrive

Hi,
I smash my ZU screen 2 months ago, I was in a hurry and there is no ZU on the stock here so I buy a LG G3. That device is rock solid specs, roms, community is really good but can not feel comfortable with it. You can see lots of people out there using the same device. I give to my dad and go for an nexus 6. I'm using it for 3 weeks. Most of you know the device no need to tell about it but it is thick and bulky. Ne feel of premium device. Early updates are good but buggy. I use it but I don't love it. LG G Line, Sammy S and Note Line are all good devices, all you can fine well cookeded roms for them like CM variants, AOSP variants. But it is same for the Z Ultra too.
Last night I see the broken ZU on the desk, take it on my hands. It feels sooooo slick, premium and special. As a fellow ZU buddy of you, my advice is just stick to your beast-giant-premium ZU. Other devices are bad but only the waste of time for a ZU user. Only alternative for me is rumored Z5 Ultra for know. I beleive we'll is in in next 4 months may be sooner.
Just want to share
Well dah, I'm on my 5th ultra now

I have to agree with you. My ZU touch screen was not working. I bought a C5 ultra. I thought they share the similar spec. But it can't replicate the premium feel on the hand.

How do you find the Xperia C5? I like the look of the super slim bezels. How do you find the camera performance - it is the only issue I ever had with my ZU.

How do you find the Xperia C5? I like the look of the super slim bezels. How do you find the camera performance - it is the only issue I ever had with my ZU.

Slow camera launch and shutter speed. Other than that I have no issue, I am not nit-picky about the colour accuracy and low light performance. However, I do notice that photo can be blurry if my hand shakes a little bit. I think it is because the camera module does not have optical image stabilization.
Heheee I feel you buddy. Don't give up on this 6.4' beautiful monster. 4 months of ZU use and I wouldn't trade off for no 2015 device yet, 2 years since release and this [email protected] still feels rock solid and commands respect among equals!
Now waiting for Xperia Z 5 Ultra : A better camera with LED Flash, Less bezels &more battery juice maybe!:fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed:
I have my ZU for almost 2 years now (January 2014) and I've started looking for alternatives. Besides screen size (anything smaller than 6" is too small), the thickness (or thinness) is very important to me. In that area, there is no quality competition.
The Xperia C5 is too thick, the X5 Premium is close, but a bit thicker and the screen is under 6".
There are phones from other makers, like the Huawei P8 max, but they don't have the beautiful Xperia design and feel. Somehow they feel like an augmented phone while the ZU really looks like something that is designed to be like this from the beginning, balanced and well proportionate in its size.
So, just like you guys, still no solution. I'll keep the ZU for now, just bought a new USB flap for it. And if something breaks, I think I'll buy the same model on eBay.

Two years I've had my Z ultra. I love this thing, best $600 I ever spent on a phone. At the time I was considering a note 3 or the Z ultra in the Z ultra with 100 bucks cheaper. So glad I didn't go with the note 3.
By the way, where do you buy a new USB flap?

This handset isn't getting Marshmallow, so no.
Bought mine a month after it was originally released, still going strong.
Love ZU
Loving it still after many years. Kept it on 4.4.4 stock with root only. Won't change until Sony makes another like it. :fingers-crossed:

Broke my Z2 and it is unrepairable. Should I buy Z2 or Z3?

Hi guys!
Unfortunately I totally broke my Z2 a month ago, just by dropping it from my pocket (wow). Now I want to stuck with sony devices and I only have money for another Z2 or a Z3, they are the same price.Which one should I go for? I dont care about the +200MHz in the Z3. I don't like the speaker cut outs on the Z3 and the notification LED is also not really great, however the device is newer and the shape of it is better. Any opinions?
I definitly would choose the Z2, especially because of the more color accurate display, the Z3 has a horribly blueish tint (and yes, you could calibrate the whitepoint, but this reduces the maximum brightness and the contrast ratio).
I also read a lot of customer complaints about the glass on the rear of the Z3 just cracking out of the blue.

To be fair though, that also happened to my Z2.
Get the Z2... If you can wait till you have a little more money. Get a 6P

If you consider using flip case, get z3 as it has magnetic sensor.
If you don't care about it get z2. They are the same devices + you get awesome headphones ?
Sent from Xperia Z2
Luckily not from an iPhone = Yesterdays technology at tomorrows prices
If I had to choose, I buy Z2. This is the best Xperia phone

Both phones are going to be dead in the next months or so, no Android "N" for them. I would avoid them, but if you can only spend so much I would buy the Z2 again.
I wouldn't recommend buying both, since these devices are getting outdated soon. I love my XPERIA Z2, but like people say.... Other devices are a better choice right now.
All android devices will be outdated in a year or year and a half, what are you talking about? Why is that even relevant? If you deem a software update worth your 650 dollars then go for it, im fine with 5.1 and a little more money in my pocket for more relevant things than a smartphone toy.
Well I don't care about getting updates for the next 2 years. They will get android M and I will be completely fine.I don't want to pay much more for example a Z5.And of course I can always install a custom rom which is based on a newer android version.
Z2 but for me I wish I did get Z3 for dual sim so depend on your need.
I would buy a z3. It's unofficial development is a bit better than z2. But beside this I love the way look z2 if unofficial development is not that important to you buy an z2.
Z3 is better
