S4 Stuck at Verizon boot screen - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

My S4 was on MK2 rooted, but since the TowelRoot came out, I wanted to upgrade. So I unfroze all the system apps, used the Unroot option in SuperSU and rebooted....
BUT I FORGOT TO DISABLE/UNINSTALL XPOSED FRAMEWORK. FACEPALM!!!!
I've tried wiping cache/data, downloading the update.zip in stock recovery (now trying download mode install just to try something else) but I can't get the phone to be recognized by Odin (3.09) or the Verizon update/recovery tool. The only time I was able to get ADB to recognize was in recovery when using the appy update with ADB mode, but each time I try it finds the extra stuff where Xposed left it. Is there any hope of rescuing this phone???
Please help if you can?
Thanks

Well strike another dumb moment for me... booted into download mode, and now Odin 3.07sees the phone (still not 3.09) and so does Verizon restore, so hopefully one of those does the trick, Sheesh I feel dumb. lol

aaand back to sqare one. verizon repair gets to 83 percent, but then the phone disconnects the USB and won't continue. Next, tried Odin, and that fails to write to the phone as well... I'm stuck!

Try re installing the USB drivers. I've had good luck with the one found in the SafeRoot thread myself.
Also what file are you using in Odin?
I'd say at this point just go for the full wipe nc5

Well it took a couple of things, but it's alive again. The first USB cable crapped out on me in the middle of the process, so swapped cables, and odin/verizon sua could see the phone. I was using Surge's link to full wipe MK2 and associated PIT file. I got the PIT file to load, but the image file kept falling with auth failures. Somewhere in there, whether Odin repartitioned the phone or what, the phone finally got to the "Firmware update has encountered a problem" screen, prompting to restore with Kies. I couldn't get Kies to not lock up, so I tried Verizon SUA again, and well whaddya know, NC5 installed. Grabbed TowelRoot straight away, and all good now, minus the fact that my Titanium BU apparently went to the emulated sd card... Ugh. But hey, at least I don't have a brick!

[Q] Need help returning to stock**ODIN doesn't work for me

I'm trying to return to stock on my Verizon Note 2. I'm currently on AOKP 4.2.2 and have TWRP. I tried to use the Odin method shown by Adam but my phone is not being seen via USB. I've tried to uninstall all drivers and reinstall. Tried again by using Kies as suggested by many.
Can I return to stock just by using TWRP? Are there steps or a walk through on how to do this? Links? I'm thinking I could go into TWRP, wipe the cache, delvik cache, and then factory reset. Then install, "flash" a update.zip and return to stock. Would this work or get stuck?
Also, not sure where to get the update.zip I'd need. I have the OTA stock downloaded from Adam tutorial...not the "alternate" but it's only one file. Would I just zip that, rename to update.zip and try to flash?
Please help!! Again I'm unable to do this through usb plug in so I really need another route.
Thank you in advance for any help!
Do not try renaming the file and flashing. Nothing good will come of that.
Not sure if you looked through this thread, but this might have different info for you.

I read through that one too. Tried all of that. ODIN will not work. My phone is not being detected through USB. Again i've tried all the reinstalls of the drivers etc.... Tried different original cords. nothing.
I need a way to return to stock through my device. Maybe load to the external sd and flash. Can this be done?
Not sure what file to flash though.
If odin isn't seeing your phone then something isnt installed properly. Probably drivers. Im not too sure about it because the only time I used odin was when I first rooted and I haven't touched it since.
The only option I have heard of for doing it from the phone is mobile odin. I dont know much about it, never tried it. Here's the link for it

Are u sure usb debugging is on?, or try going back to a tw rom before using odin, i also read that kies has to be removed from comuter, and phone before trying this, i had problem originally, manually installed drivers, and went to device manager and checked operation, you also have to be in odin mode on phone( power, home, down at same time, as that way it is in download mode.

Tried all of this as well. I installed kies and tried that route as some were saying the drivers may work through that method. They didn't so I tried uninstalling. I was in DL "odin" mode when trying to run odin also.

My phone was a trade off for a iPhone 5.. Best move ever but the last owner had somewhat messed up the phone modding it. I did a full wipe and the previous owner had never done any backups. I wanted to start fresh. All that being said I wanted to start back fresh at stock and then do any modding that I preferred from a new state.
I just flashed MeanBean after reading back through the posts to my question. I realized I had not tried using odin while on a TW based ROM.
I'll see if this helps.

I too am having issues with my Note II not being recognized by Odin on my PC. I know my drivers are installed and I have a good connection with my USB cable/port since when I plug in my phone when powered on, I can see the phone and card just fine. However, when going into Download mode and running Odin 3.07, Odin isn't seeing my phone.
I discovered this while looking into another situation from another thread. While I'm not currently attempting to return to stock and aren't overly concerned about returning to stock since I could probably do it with Mobile Odin if push comes to shove. I am concerned, however, that if I'm unable to use MO and my phone isn't being recognized by Odin from my PC then I might be up the proverbial creek with a paddle.

What ROM? That will work if you still have access to a reset method inside the UI. If you have a ROM on there you must be running MDK, can't you just wipe the data off the phone with CWM or TWRP? The Root binary should be un-installed when you boot back up. Just delete the SuperSu app and you should be home free.

Please correct me if im wrong or misunderstanding what you are saying but i dont believe that would work. After the data wipe you could reinstall the original ROM couldn't you? Long as you have the file on your microsd card. That would probably just reflash your ROM though, it may not erase the binaries. Damn. Well I'm sure there is a way to do it like this. It's just been a while since I've messed around with the TWRP recovery mode.
Do you have cwm on the phone. . If you do your sol. You can't wipe that without an odin to my knowledge. . But if your just rooted.. triangle away. .undo root. Remove su factory reset. . Should be clear. .

Hey so I'm in a similar boat - I have a Verizon S4 with the ME7 firmware that the usb port will no longer connect and won't charge unless the phone is off (and only when it's plugged in to a computer, not a wall). It was rooted so I followed the instructions above to unroot it.
But here's where I think I'm in trouble - I had loaded the TWRP bootloader before I found out it wouldn't work with the ME7 firmware, and never bothered flashing the phone back (stupid, I know). Is there no way to flash back to stock rom via the SD card? Right now when I go into recovery mode, it just goes to the "Downloading" screen. Does anybody know a way I can get TWRP off?
Sorry hope I'm not thread-jacking but this is the most relevant thread I've found to ask this in.
Sure it's not the cable.. if your in a position where you need to stock odin me7 you need usb.. Make sure it's not the cable although it could be phone usb is screwed due to your phone error.. you have insurance??

The only way I know to solve your problem is to reflash ME7 using ODIN. If you have the ME7 firmware already you can't use the TWRP or CWM recovery partitions at all. With out those operating your stuck using ODIN and your USB port. Have you tried another cable?

Yeah I've tried a couple different cables, a couple different pc's, a couple different chargers. It will only charge when it's off, connected to a pc. When turning it on "usb cable connected" flashes up top, even though it's not. When it is connected and turned on and below 15%, it tells you to connect to a power source. I searched this and low and behold, several other s4 owners are having the same issue. It started happening two nights ago after I didn't get the phone on a charger before it died, then I charged it overnight - next morning it wouldn't start up. I don't think it has anything to do with having the twrp bootloader though, because it had been on there a couple weeks and restarted more than once with no issues.
If anyone knows how to fix the usb thing, I've got...lets say a $50 reward up for grabs. Not much but it's all I can afford to not void my warranty.

The problem with the custom recovery partition you have on there is that it prevents you from doing a factory reset in the settings menu. At least as far as I'm aware. If mobile ODIN worked on our phones I would say download that and re-flash with the tar file on your msd card. SafeStrap might be a way to give this a try. I can't link to another forum in here but I would look into that.
Maybe replace the usb port yourself

Well I'm not exactly sure what did it, but I used a small flathead screwdriver to bend the connector inside the usb port up a little, as I read that can be an issue with these phones, and used an old cable from a blackberry, and one of the two let me get it connected to the pc and flashed back to the stock rom via ODIN. Still won't charge with any combination of wall chargers/cables, so I'm going to take it in to Verizon. But it's a huge sigh of relief knowing that they won't be able to claim I damaged it by putting a custom bootloader on. Thanks for the input. Hope OP gets his problems sorted also.

That may have been true, I might have been trying the wrong buttons to get to recovery. Still learning some stuff. But the twrp loader definitely changed the splash and download screen enough that I needed to get it off so that no red flags will be thrown when I take it in to Verizon to have them look at it.
Thanks for everybody's help! I managed to connect to ODIN by pushing the usb in different ways until I got a connection and sent it back to Verizon completely stock

[Q] First time bricking a phone, stuck getting a message saying unauth software.

Hello, I've been rooting my phones for a long time and have never had any issues with the phone bricking on me. I made some noobish mistakes when flashing illusion ROM and formatted the system partition and thats where everything went downhill. After that i could get into TWRP and I tried several different ROMS and nandroid backups and nothing would work, just kept giving me the Galaxy Note 2 start screen that wouldn't go away, I waited hours several times I tried this. I found out how to get back to stock with Odin so I tried that and finally got back to stock 4.1.2.
I then tried the casual root method and got partition errors and when I unplugged my phone and tried to boot it back up all I get is a yellow triangle saying that my phone is trying to run unauthorized software and to take it to my nearest Verizon store. I can boot into download mode still but now my computer(Windows 8) will not recognize my phone. It makes the connection sounds but it doesn't show up in my device list or in my device manager. From here I tried uninstalling and re-installing the Samsung drivers but to no avail it still doesn't recognize my phone. Neither my computer or Odin recognize it plugged in. Can someone please help me? give me anything else to try, please.
casual killed the odin driver...the same thread you restored to stock look at the bottom of the section for the link to restoring the odin driver.
Keep reading.... at least thats how I fixed my phone today. I didnt realize I needed to unlock the bootloader so I ended up with the unauthorized software yada yada yada.....lots of reading, youtube video research, xda posts, trial and errors and sheer luck not to brick it worse and I was back up and running in a few hours learning a lot on the way....dont give up!!!

How did you fix your phone?
I got the message about unauthorized software on my i605 note2. When I boot into recovery, I get the message. If I boot into download mode, I can use odin. I tried in reroot with root66 (just grasping at straws) and it took it. Then, the minute I unplugged, boom, the message.
I tried note 2 toolbox and got now where.
I downloaded original firmware from Sammobile.com. I have to unzip it, then look for it with odin I guess.

I downloaded odin and unzipped it. I downloaded I605vramc3_I605VZ...zip.
I unzipped odin (I've used it before but I decided to unzip the latest copy just in case there were some upgrades...). I pressed "Pit" and looked for the file. I was unable to find it. So per the guide, I unzipped the .zip file with 7zip. Odin is still unable to find something that I can use. It's like Odin doesn't see the .zip or the unzipped .zip.
How do I get all those files that unzipped turned into something that Odin can find and that I can use?
I know Odin works. Grasping at straws I injected Root 66 into my note2. But of course that didn't remove the offending files so I still get the Unauthorized Software notice.
So in sum, can you tell me how to get Odin to locate the files I downloaded per the guide?
Thank you so much in advance for your patients. I'm not really new to this it's just that this is the first time that I've bricked my phone. Funny thing is the S4 took the goo manager just fine and then I was able to load TWRP onto the S4 with no problem.
I have not unlocked the S4 and I don't thing I unlocked the Note2. I know I used Easy Unlock on one of my phones but I think it was the Razr Maxx.
Anyway, the Note 2 was doing just fine until I tried to put TWRP on it. then I got the dreaded message.
Can't get Odin working
Bean running Beans v21 since it came out and loving it. Yesterday I installed the NBC Million Second Quiz app from the play store, and it froze my phone on a black screen....capacitive buttons would light up, and I could get the reboot menu, but selecting reboot did nothing. No worries -- I pulled the battery and restarted, and was stuck on boot animation. No worries -- booted into TWRP recovery, wiped cache and davlik. Reboot. Still stuck on boot animation. Now worried. Go back into TWRP and re-install Beans v21...It goes through Aroma, but stays on 0% installing forever. Now I figure that somehow the boot loader got re-locked, though can't imagine how that would happen. Boot into Bootloader, and it does say that it is the Samsung standard. Next I put it into download mode and ran CASUAL for 605. It takes, says it rewritten the bootloader, but when it tries to reboot the phone, I am again stuck on the boot animation forever. No problem -- now I should be able to go back into TWRP, wipe data, re-install a ROM since the phone is unlocked again, and move forward. But now when I go into recovery I no longer get TWRP..now I get the Verizon yellow triangle, I assume becuase CASUAL couldn't reboot to complete. I downloaded odin, the pit, and the 605 image and tried to restore to factory, but odin can't connect. I am guessing that this is because CASUAL replaced Odin.
I see a link to a youtube video, but can't open it from work.
So ... Can someone outline for me how to get odin to connect again after using CASUAL. Or, if there is a better next step, I'm all ears!
I am starting to think that someone at Verizon stumble across some way to slam that dreaded triagle onto our note2. Mine worked just fine until a few days ago when i tried to load twrp.
My counter shows 1 and my kernel shows custom (hence giving verizon a way out of the warranty). Funny thing though, i never opened the bootloader, i never re-rommed. I just rooted.
I am stuck. I can't get odin to see the original firmware i downloaded from this forum. I tried unzipping it w 7zip. I have the unzipped files but still odin can't see them.
What am i doing wrong here?
What does your counter show? Does it show a custom kernel ("yes" displayed when you open the note into downloadmode under kernel)?
Where did u c the video? Point me in that direction and I'll watch it for u and me and let u know.

For those of you who have been following my saga. I have now recovered my Note2. I installed I605Vramc3 using Odin for the S3. I had to find the file that I downloaded (C:\Users\John\Desktop\KIES_HOME_I605VRAMC3_I605VZWAMC3_1098177_REV04_user_low_ship.tar.md5). I then copied that file into DESKTOP on my notebook. Now, I was able to point Odin in that direction. I plugged in my note while in Download mode, injected the file, and waited for the reboot. Botta bang, botta boom, the note rebooted with a flurry on downloaded new app updated.
The only problem I have is that I don't have root. Now I have to figure out how to inject root. But that's for another day!! As for now, I am up an running. I thought for sure I had a $600 paper weight.
The warning is gone and thank God it all works.
Thank you to everyone that participated in this saga. It's nice to know that I am not alone.
By the way, Casual repartitions your device. That may be why it failed for an earlier poster.
Update!
I just finished installing No You Verizon R515. My Baseband is I605VRAMC3. I am on 4.1.2. The instalation was a breeze. I am now safely backed up w TWRP.
Many thanks to Adam. Also thanks to Droidmotter video.
I am stoked I am so looking forward to going back into the Verizon store I went to for help and telling them I will not be spending $700 bones on a new note2!!
What kind of computer are you using?

I have had a rooted for for 3 years now. G Nexus and now note 2. Wiped....flashed....backed up....wiped and flashed again hundreds of times. 2 days ago I wiped and tried to flash a nightly and bam.... nothin. Went to nandroid back and nothing there! Re booted and got yellow triangle. Wouldnt let me even boit into odin. After hours of screwing around I threw it against a wall.....dunked it in the toilet.... poured gas on it and lit that mofo. Paid 99 bucks and had assurion send me a replacement. My wife said I better not root it! Have made it 24 hours so far. Dont think im gonna make it much longer..... m u s t r o o o o t!

You..., must..., root. You..., will..., root. TWRP, Titanium backup, they are calling you from the path less traveled. You can not resist. Your wife does not understand. You..., will..., ROOT..., ROOt..., ROot..., Root..., root..., roo... , ro... , r...,
You now it was funny. When I finally recovered my note2, I paused to contemplate my success.
I spent a few minutes then reading the posts of those who unsuccessfully tried to root using Casual. All I could think of was the fact that after a week of not being able to use my Note, I was not going to risk it.
Besides, I have my rooted S3. I am running android apps on my BB Q10. Hell, I even have the Nexus 10 and the Ipad (and two ipods) (I devices jb'n of course).
Did I really want to take the time and risk the yellow triagle?
I rooted it. No hick ups what-so-ever.
You must root. You can't not root.

Vramc3 was the solution, well, almost... I couldn't get Odin to see the file. Fortunately I placed it in the desktop folder on my notebook, odin saw it and i'm up and running.

Follow up -- Simply put: Delete installed samsung drivers in applications and device manager (plug in the device so you can see them, then delete them) and then plug in the phone and allow it to re-install drivers from windows update (or you can download yourself, since windows update can take a long time).
Once I got connected, I was able to ODIN in a stock image -- couldn't use Route 66, as it still gave me the yellow triangle, but VRAMC3 stock worked. Then back to Casual, TWRP, and freedom once again.

[Q] How long before MJ7 ODIN file is available?

I did the OTA update from M1I to MJ7 and read somewhere that the M1I root method would work. It made my phone unbootable. Obviously the M1I file I have won't work now. I need the MJ7 odin file now or else my phone is a paperweight until then.
Someone else did this 2, you can't use this method because it FLASHES A ROOTED Ml1 Rom....... Odin file still has not been posted yet

Yeah I thought I read that it would still work. I'll just have to wait for the Odin file
I am in the same boat, my phone is unbootable and I am waiting for the MJ7 odin file or my replacement phone

thankfully i have an iphone i can use for now. surprisingly i went to boot up my phone just now and it went through almost the whole boot process. it's stuck on the verizon splash. last night it would just go straight into odin.
I am not so lucky as to have a backup phone
I should look for a cheap 4g phone to keep in a drawer for such occasions. Hopefully an MJ7 file is made available soon so I can recovery my files before my new phone arrives.

I'm sure it will. In a few days. I'm surprised the verizon repair tool doesn't have MJ7.... maybe that'll take a while too.

You might be able to get it into recovery and manually use the update.zip.
It is reported that at least a few people have been able to get out of the state you are in my using a manual update.

Untested, but you can unzip the attached and flash it in ODIN - it's the stock MJ7 recovery. With a bit of luck that'll get you repaired.
If not, flash the no-wipe MJ7 ROM from the Android Development forum, but that'll probably cause you to lose root.

Awesome
You know... I don't post much if at all on xda. Mostly im an intel junkie but I have to say after bricking my 24 hour old MJ7 s4 and fully recovering it using this post you guys are ****ing AWESOME!
FYI The exact steps I took were as follows using windows 8.1 pro x64
downloaded Samsung_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones_v1.5.14.0
downloaded Odin3 v3.07
downloaded ALL_I545VRUEMJ7_I545VZWEMJ7_1937946_REV06_user_low_ship_MULTI_CERT.tar.md5
Install Samsung_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones_v1.5.14.0 drivers
Ran odin as administrator, left defaults checked and chose PDA ALL_I545VRUEMJ7_I545VZWEMJ7_1937946_REV06_user_low_ship_MULTI_CERT.tar.md5
(Windows hangs when trying to first browse the file, WAIT)
plugged phone in and got instant com green and hit start. Waited 20 mins and it all went through successfully.
USERS NOTE:
The first computer I tried just absolutely would not flash this phone. Drivers where correct etc it just seemed like it dropped connection. Tried 3 separate usb ports one even off a powered hub and all failed on the system flash. Changed computers and followed the same setup and went first try. If it fails try and try again. Changing different ports, computers, and or drivers helps if you get failure messages.
Thanks to all of you!

Just an FYI. Whenever you take an OTA from the Carrier it's written so you cannot revert back to an earlier build or a soft and possible hard brick can occur. This has been discussed numerous times in various forums. You were lucky this time.

[Q] Black Screen After Verizon Splash Screen?

A friend of mine (really) has an S4 that goes to a black screen after the Verizon splash screen, nothing else happens other than the LED pulses blue.
When I go into recovery mode, the little green dude says 'Initializing System Update' for a fraction of a second, the he falls over dead with a red exclamation triangle over his open chest and it quickly says 'No command', 'Error' and finally 'No command' again.
I don't want to try a factory reset, as all of his photos are in phone memory rather than on an SD card. He's already gotten a new phone from Verizon, but is trying not to lose his photos.
Kies won't see the phone either, so I'm at a loss of what to try. It will go into ODIN mode, don't know if that provides me any options. The phone is unmodded, stock factory image.
You can try to Odin a no wipe image to salvage the photos but it sounds like only the full wipe will take.
Do you know what he was trying to do that soft bricked the phone?

Josh,
Looks like a no-go. Downloaded Odin 3.07, along with a no-wipe image tar file (VRUAMDK). Open Odin, loaded tar file to PDA, it successfully checked the file as valid. Turned on phone in Odin mode, pressed volume up to go to Downloading screen on phone. Plugged in USB cable to phone, no COM ID shows up in Odin. Samsung USB driver 1.5.33.0 is installed, as part of my Kies install, so that's not it. Guess I'm screwed....

Most likely you're not screwed. What I've done in the past is uninstall Kies and the Samsung drivers from your commuter. Then reboot. Then go to K1mu's Saferoot thread and grab the drivers he has in the op.
Try that and maybe if you have to try another USB cable and different Port on your computer. You should be able to get Odin to see your phone.

Try what Mistertac said. He basically covered everything you can do to get Odin to try and recognize the phone. Try another computer as well. You could also try Heimdall, similar program to Odin. Also, if you can get the phone connected, make sure you figure out what build he was on, probably wasn't MDK.
Yea it most likely wasn't MDK but you never know. Worse that can happen is it just won't work and if that's the case just grab the MK2 tar. Sometimes these new computers are just a pain with the drivers from what I've seen and dealt with. I miss Windows 2000/XP Pro lol

Josh & Mistertac,
Thanks for the help, it's been a while since I had to do this on my own phones. The first issue with connecting has been solved, dumbass me was using a Samsung dock USB cable that was charge only with no data lines. Swapped out the cable and Odin sees it fine. Tried to run the MDK tar file and got a big fat FAIL. Now the phone immediately goes to Odin on powerup and displays the 'encountered an issue' screen. I've found two more no-wipe images here, VRUAME7 and VRUDMI1, but don't see the MK2 tar in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2301259
So I'm downloading the ME7 and MI1 files now to give them a shot.

MK2 no-wipe restore went perfectly, was able to recover all photos and other data. Moved everything off to the SD card and will do a full factory reset before it gets sent back to Verizon. Thanks to both of you for the help. I haven't rooted my last two phones, may have to fall back into this game again....
