So here I have the S2 running stock 4.1.2 unrooted. The baseband is I9100XXMS2 (Hungarian) and the build number is JZ054K.I9100XWLSS.
The goal is to flash CM11 or OmniROM or AOKP or whatever I will find suitable.
Please keep in mind, that this is NOT my phone, that's why I have no idea how to do stuff with it.
So here are the questions.
1: Can I simply get Odin and flash the CF Root as PDA?
2: Is the Odin 1.85 version in the CF Root thread compatible with this firmware?
3: Which package should I use from the CF Root thread? I'm asking because the kernel version does not have that 2 letters and 1 number the thread is referring to. The kernel version only says (3.0.31 - 1156082 [email protected] #3 SMP PREEMPT) and the date.
4: After getting CF Root and it's CWM, can I flash another version of CWM directly from CWM like I can do with other phones?
5: If yes, which CWM package is the most reliable that is compatible with KitKat?
Firstly, you should be searching for this information. You've been here more than long enough to know every single question you could possibly ask has already been asked/answered many times. As this phone was released 3 yrs ago, this is absolutely the case.
Having said that, I will supply you brief/limited answers to your questions (I am not providing detailed answers for the above reason; I'm not doing your work for you).
1) Don't use CFRoot. It's been superceded. Search for the PhilZ thread & use that (do not ask me 'what kernel do I use ?'; read the thread).
2) You should be able to use any version of Odin, however, if you find one version doesn't work, try another. Also, if you have problems with any Odin flash, refer to Hopper8's 'Odin troubleshooting' thread stickied in General.
3) Not applicable due to the answer I gave in 1.
4) No, you cannot flash another version of CWM independently of anything else like you can on other phones. Recovery is 'baked' into the kernel on the I9100 & not in a separate partition like other phones, so any recovery you flash independently will only persist until the next reboot. You're stuck with whatever CWM version the kernel uses.
If you want a particular CWM version, you need to run a kernel that has it (read the kernel thread to find out which version it uses).
5) This information (which CWM version at a minimum you need to flash these roms) is absolutely common knowledge now & has been asked/answered 100's of times at least over the past few mths since these roms were released; search.
Edit - Whether it's your phone or not is irrelevant. If you're going to mod this person's phone for them, everything I've said holds true. If they're going to do it themselves, they would be much better served by taking the time to actually learn this stuff themselves. I'm tipping a busted phone & a lot of tears if you pass on the information I've given you.

Flash xwms2 based philz kernel and you will be rooted and will get the permanent CWM. It will work.
After flashing via odin if you want to get rid of from the yellow triangle then use triangle away app which will remove it and reset the counter to 0. But you can flash philz via stock recovery which will not give you a yellow triangle.

If you are flashing a kernel ignore csc version, that's not related, the easiest way is to flash the correct cf root kernel, in this case kf3, ignore the region code, then grab the correct stock kernel from that thread.
You don't need to put the stock kernel back, and if you do you will lose cmw recovery and the ability to use the cwm manager app that comes with cf root.
Csc is apn settings and bundled apps, generally you can use any rom with any csc but you can always manually put in your apn settings if they are missing

1- IMO CF root is the easiest. All are safe, my recommendation would be CF.
2- Kies updates have nothing to do with Kernels. As long as you are on Stock Official ROM's, you will receive updates.
3- Your firmware is KF3. CSC is region specific settings, like Keyboard language, APN's, SIM services etc etc. It's not that much important. I'd advice you to not change CSC anyway.

If you are unsure about firmware and csc and only want to root then root with cf-root and dont touch anything else until you are sure about what your doing.The last thing you need to do is rush in and brick your phone.CF-Root is quick and easy.

You don't need CF-Kernel to root the phone now.
All you need is to just flash any rooted kernel.
I recommend using speedmod kernel by hardcore. Most people who flash to CF-Kernel are going to switch to something else anyways, so you might as well skip that extra step and go to the kernel that you would recommend best.
The easiest is to just download your favorite kernel, then flash it by using odin. DO NOT REPARTITION THE PHONE.

There is nothing like safest. If you follow the steps to the dot, then you will be fine.

Yes, I get the yelow triangle. There is a way to get rid of it: flash the original kernel back. You will not loose root.

Sorry for the ignorant question but what is the difference between speedmod kernel and cf-kernel?
If i understand this on simple terms CF-KERNEL is kept to a basic minimum?
where can we get the speedmod kernel?

Yes, CF-Kernel is pretty much the same as stock except that it has the stuff required for root, and addition of Clockwork Recovery and Clockwork Recovery Application.
Other kernels have tweaks such as overclocking, undervolting, and extras.
I don't recommend kernels that have overclocking or undervolting, but that's just my own preference.
I appreciate these features as I am in ninphetamine. With undervolting you're able to save battery. But as you said...these are personal preferences.

Im getting a sgs2 next week (finally), and want to pimp it up as soon as it is in my hands. I wanna check with you guys if I understood everything right, since this is gonna be my first android phone.
Let say I choose to flash with the latest original firmare, that would be XXKI4 or XXKI8. I get it here.
I also want it rooted. So Im supposed to flash XXKI4 first, then root it using S2 Root v1.5.1 or CF-Root 4.4 but, which one? S2 Root requires the phone to be flashed with an "insecure kernel" prior rooting. Do i need the insecure kernel from XXKI4, or from my previous firmware? After the rooting, i need to reflash the secure kernel (cause its safer and removes a yellow triangle)? So if I understand, each firmware has a kernel. To be root, you need the kernel to be unsecured.
And about the flash counter... are the latest firmwares coming (ironicly) with the old bootloader, and that means the counter won't be raised o easily set to zero afterwards?
So first i need to flash the firmware i want, then secure kernel of that one, then root, and then secure back?

I recommend CF-Root even if also SOC works well.
This because CF-Root is one step and done, while SOC asks multiple steps, and the not experienced android users got more chances to screw up and end up with a semi/full briked phone.
Read carefully the CF-Root instructions, dont forget anything in the instructions and in about 20 seconds you have your phone rooted.
Be sure to have installed Samsung KIES (this install the official samsung drivers) but to NOT have it running in background when you use odin (kill the kies process tree), because kies dosnt like ODIN and it blocks it at half flashing (with chance of semibrick the phone).
Also DONT ever never use Rom Manager, SII is not compatible with rom manager, a lot of ppl got semi/full briked phone by using it.
No need to use insecure/secure kernels with cf-root (that's why, only 1 step).
About the original firmwares, the ones in Intratech thread if im not wrong (can be, i didnt really checked deep) are with old bootloader, so yes, you can go back to 0 with a usb jig.
Another and last thing, be sure you have the 9100 international, NOT the AT&T or the 9100G/M that need other files to work.

Just in addition to rembrandtlnx's good and correct reply:
1. Read the first post of Intratech's thread => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278.
Please read the whole post and take your time to understand it.
2. Do the steps described there to flash XXKI4 to your phone.
It is non-wipe version with old bootloader (as Intratech said ... it's true).
And this will never increase the counter, as it count only custom or insecure kernels (such as CF-Root).
3. If you want to root your phone, the easiest way to do is to flash the corresponding CF-Root kernel, which is XXKI4 v4.4.
Please stick to Chainfire's description of his first post in his thread => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399&highlight=CF+Root.
This will increase the counter and give you the yellow triangle when booting your phone.
4. If you want to get rid of the yellow triangle, please read Chainfire's guide in his second post.
This will not increase the counter any more, as you will flash the original / stock kernel and use CWM to re-flash the CF-Root kernel (zImage file).
5. To reset the counter, rembrandtlnx told you how to do it.
I don't bother about the counter. It's just a number on my phone.

There are many different stories to talk about.
As it is very difficult for me to identify your interests and knowledge, I reduce my answer to the IMO most important threads for SGS2:
1. Intratech's Official Firmware thread => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
Please read the first post. There is a detailed description of how to flash a new Firmware/ROM to your phone, and there is a Quick Root Guide too.
This rooting method is very elegant (as you do not get a yellow triangle and the binary counter will not be increased), but it is a little bit "manual".
For a little bit more "automated" rooting, look at the next thread.
Most important is, that you can find the latest, official and stable Firmware version most as non-wipe together with the corresponding stock kernel, which you might need for getting rid of the yellow triangle after flashing a rooted kernel (such as CF-Root or SpeedMod).
I always prefer flashing Frankenstein ROMs from third post, as you can combine them to any other Firmware parts, such as Modem/Phone/Baseband (for inter-connectivity) and CSC (for region and/or carrier dependent customizations) files.
2. Chainfire's CF-Root thread => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399&highlight=CF+Root
Everything you need to root your phone is to flash a rooted kernel to your phone (See description in first post).

Just to be on the "safe" side, do a backup before flashing.
If you have CWM recovery mode (or CWM Manager app), just do a complete system / nandroid backup.
So you will be able to restore this backup, if one of the tested custom ROMs or kernels messed up your phone.

By reading the threads stated above, multiple times, very carefully.
I can jailbreak a phone in my sleep, but this stuff kinda went over my head too. I got the GS2 (my first android also) a couple of months ago and have been reading up on stuff periodically but still don't understand a lot of it.
It's why I'm glad there are so many helpful people who write clear guides on how to do stuff.
I'm sure by the time the GS3 comes out I'll have a bit of a grasp on things!!

Yea I was scared too. All I can say is, READ THE STEPS ONCE, TWICE, AND AGAIN BEFORE YOU TOUCH YOUR PHONE.
First off. It's not possible to brick it when flashing a kernel(to root). The only way to brick is replacing the boot loader, only official Samsung ROM's do that and it takes less than a second so the chances are slim. I say you start by downloading CF-ROOT for your current firmware. Just be careful and read the instructions. I also recommend to only flash roms from XDA. Also, never use PIT file in ODIN. Welcome to Android, I was new as well 3 months ago and I've been changing kernels and roms like crazy since then
Your current firmware is KF3. I HIGHLY recommend downloading and installing KJ3 from Intratech's thread. It is very fast. Download the one from Frankenstein firmwares. That will not root, you need to flash cf-root or other rooted kernels to do that.

dont worry mate i felt the same as well..but as stated above by the rest of the posts read carefully the steps and you should be fine honestly
People talk about jailbreaking iPhones being easy, i could say the same about rooting and flashing ROM's, simple to do once you get the hang of it (and read up)
Just take it slow, pour a coffee and read. I can't stress it enough. It'll make you more comfortable when you actually do it.
Search for the "litening ROM" has great step by step including links to Odin and all that good stuff.

So Guys I rooted My SGS 2 using the following method..
First of all, make sure you’re having all these tools mentioned below at the time rooting.
Odin Downloader
XWKDD tar file [don’t extract, leave as it is]
SuperOneClick
USB Data Cable
Samsung’s KIES 2.0 or get it from download page
Install Samsung Kies 2.0,if not installed, as you will need the correct USB driver for software’s to communicate. Turn on USB debugging mode in galaxy s2 from Setting>Applications>Development>USB Debugging
1. Boot device into download mode. For getting into download mode on galaxy s2, first turn off the phone and power it on again by pressing Volumedown button, Home button and Power simultaneously. You’ll see a downloading icon once you go into this mode.
2. Start Odin downloader
3. Connect phone to computer via USB.
4. Odin software will notify you when it detects phone and gets connected.
5. In the software, just select “Auto Reboot” and “Reset Time” checkboxes and leave every other options as default.
6. Press PDA icon and select the XWDD tar file you just downloaded [XWKDD_insecure.tar]
7. Press Start and ODIN will flash the kernel and after that, Galaxy S2 will reboot.
8. Don’t remove the phone from USB and let it reboot.
9. After rebooting, start SuperOneClick and press ROOT.
9. Once again reboot the device.
That’s it, Your Samsung Galaxy S2 is now Rooted!!
Now enjoy all the custom roms and overclocking apps for galaxy without any restrictions.
And I used CWM manager to remove the yellow triangle....

Just to be on the "safe" side, do a backup before flashing.
If you have CWM recovery mode (or CWM Manager app), just do a complete system / nandroid backup.
So you will be able to restore this backup, if one of the tested custom ROMs or kernels messed up your phone.

So Guys I rooted My SGS 2 using the following method..
First of all, make sure you’re having all these tools mentioned below at the time rooting.
Odin Downloader
XWKDD tar file [don’t extract, leave as it is]
SuperOneClick
USB Data Cable
Samsung’s KIES 2.0 or get it from download page
Install Samsung Kies 2.0,if not installed, as you will need the correct USB driver for software’s to communicate. Turn on USB debugging mode in galaxy s2 from Setting>Applications>Development>USB Debugging
1. Boot device into download mode. For getting into download mode on galaxy s2, first turn off the phone and power it on again by pressing Volumedown button, Home button and Power simultaneously. You’ll see a downloading icon once you go into this mode.
2. Start Odin downloader
3. Connect phone to computer via USB.
4. Odin software will notify you when it detects phone and gets connected.
5. In the software, just select “Auto Reboot” and “Reset Time” checkboxes and leave every other options as default.
6. Press PDA icon and select the XWDD tar file you just downloaded [XWKDD_insecure.tar]
7. Press Start and ODIN will flash the kernel and after that, Galaxy S2 will reboot.
8. Don’t remove the phone from USB and let it reboot.
9. After rebooting, start SuperOneClick and press ROOT.
9. Once again reboot the device.
That’s it, Your Samsung Galaxy S2 is now Rooted!!
Now enjoy all the custom roms and overclocking apps for galaxy without any restrictions.
And I used CWM manager to remove the yellow triangle....

For now just enjoy your phone as is probably. Over time you will find out what you really needed root for. For me titanium backup is number 1.
Unlike an iPhone, even without rooting you can do most things you need but yeah some need root.
Personally I would have rooted using cf root/speedmod etc to have cwm recovery for backups.

You shouldnt worry just a new platform. Depending on how patient you have been after updating the new firmware on your iOS toys jailbreaking can be much worse than this. Apple developer fanboys have a tendency to wrap it up with a pretty little gui and a sexy dress but it is really just as many steps. We just like it au naturel over here

Ok so i have installed Cyanogem Mod 7.1.0 ...
But now i want to get back to my stock firmware because i want to use tv out function which is missing from Cyanogen mod 7.1.0 so can u please help me out in getting back to my stock firmware...
Just go to intratech thread that was linked on first page. Then i would recommend to chose the frankenstein version to be able to reset your counter if needed.
Chose the firmware you want (kk5 is pretty good) and flash it with odin.
You can also flash a custom rom that is based on sammy like checkrom. You can do this trough cwm recovery and don't need to use odin for flashing.
If you don't have cwm yet you can install siyah kernel to get it.

I have an sg2 (sprint) had it flashed to boost, the 3g antenna comes and goes is there a fix for this?...also will I be able to get the facial recognition lock screen on my phone...please let me know thanks

There are a lot of ROMs based on the original Galaxy S software, so if you want the added customization, there are many options.
But what you want to do now to return to the original ROM, is to go in this thread:

Hi everyone
I upgraded my OS from Android 2.3.3 to 4.0.3 ICS using Kies, however I am now having trouble rooting. I've spent the last 3 hours looking for a way to root my current version of Android, however could not find any insecure kernel that matches my exact baseband version (XXLPR) and my kernel version (XWLP3). I installed this firmware but S2Root seems to think it's not actually insecure/rootable. I did find other firmwares/kernels (on this as well as other sites) that seem to match my current version (at least the XW bit), but judging by the comments, they all seem to have a higher than average incidence of booting/WiFi problems.
Can anyone advise where I should get a insecure kernel that is appropriate for me to use in Odin, in order to then proceed to use S2Root? I'd greatly appreciate any advice, many thanks!
PS: I am using a S2 I9100 that used to be on O2 UK, now unlocked.

OK.. well, going into boot loop sounds like getting brickified to me Or not necessarily? I.e. can you just put the phone into download mode again and try a different kernel?
Boot loop is not brick.
Flashing stock kernel usually fix it.

I have the international S3 & once i had omega rom installed on it. but since the "sudden death" syndrome for the S3 was discovered & my device turned out to be of that series with the potential to sudden death, i unrotted the phone & erased every track i ever install a costume rom.
seems like a long time ago & now i forgot how i started back then, what are the steps to install a costume rom on a "fresh" device? if i remember correctly, all i need to do is to root the phone, then just follow the instructions of the rom i want (omega latest version 4.1.2). is this correct or i missed something?
what's the best way to root a phone today?
also, the sudden brick thread is hundreds of pages & so much information, so i didn't get the basics of it: is there a way to protect my phone from future bricking? will the latest omega (V43.9) cover this protection, or i need more steps/other roms?

alright, read a bit & all came back to me :silly:, just made sure first it was updated.
I rooted the phone using CF-root 6.4, made Nandroid & esf back up.
currently downloading omega latest rom & will install shortly.

I spent the last hour+ reading all the topics in the Roll-Up Thread. while it did added some info i wasn't aware of, still it gave no hint on the cmw recovery version update. infact, the root guides there are the same one i used which contain this old cmw version.
so how to i update it to the latest one?

When you go through the process of rooting the phone, you have to alter the ROM. Although the risks of this are very minimal, we couldn't technically say it was risk free. If I were asked my opinion on how to root, I would recommend one of the 2 scenarios.
1) You want root only. No custom ROMs, kernels etc. Just root, just to use root apps.
CF Auto Root Via Odin
Why? Tried and tested method, simple to use. No need to choose what exploit you want to use as it's tailored for your device.
What does it do? It gives you a stock recovery (so can't flash things) and roots the Android OS
2) You want to flash custom ROMs / Kernels
If you want root on your existing Android ROM, you can do 1) first. Then flash a recovery of your choice (CWM, Philz, TWRP) via Odin.
However, if you immediately plan on flashing a ROM, there's no need to root your existing ROM. Simply skip straight to installing a recovery. Backup then flash what you like.

thank you. it's now updated to PhilZ Touch 5 V6.0.3.3 .
did all the backups i need already (esf, nandroid...) so now I'm heading for the omega installation.
