[Q]Choosing the Right Custom Kernel for your Custom ROM - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm currently using the S5 Sensation ROM™ v3.3. How do I know if a certain Kernel is compatible with the ROM, or how do I choose the right Kernel for the ROM?
Thank you

Try some kernel and choose right

simple how-to, to find out which kernel you need:
1) you ask yourself what rom am I using.
--> ah I see its a stock rom based on Archiport
2) You ask yourself which kernels are compatible.
--> kernels which uses the ported note 2 sources
3) you ask yourself where I could get the information to find out which kernel uses these sources.
--> I might go to a q&a thread of the rom base, in this case Archiport q&a thread
--> ah I see there is someone nice, who has written an OP with detailed instructions and even a list of compatible kernels
sorry if this sounds a bit sarcastic, was not meant that way but rather it should show for what you have to look when you search something.

[Q] Which Rom!? Help ! :)

Hey everyone
I currently use CM9 and love the experience, however I want the stability and all the hardware to be working of stock.
My question is there a ROM out there which is built from stock, but has been converted to look exactly the same as AOSP /CM9?
Anything close?
Thanks !
I use WanamLite. Its based on Stock Samsung but pure ICS themed. I recomend it.

try foxhound. from reading that thread it is more or less has the AOSP feel. but next time ask in the right forum mate the Q&A section and also maybe it is best to search and find the one that you might think is appropriate cause there is no point having to wait for others to tell you

err...most of the roms in the android dev section are based on stock and are themed to look like aosp
Have you even bothered to look?
Read & search, this question is so trivial it's clear you've done neither

[Q] How to indentify all the info my phone?

Hi everyone
I tried to search forum but i dunno if there exits already this thread but i will explain here my details
I have samsung galaxy s2 at&t sgh-i777 cyanogen mod 7
The problem is when i receiv as gift from my father (he did buy at china) the phone wasnt original stock but prolly the china did flash cm7 and some kernel and govern (i think maybe is active for now ondemand if i can understand).
But i cant know which kernel is current using? how i can to see this info?
Searching forum many use AOKP, Fluxxi, Shostock and so on but my phone how i could know which one is using this kernel at moment? is there an app that i can see all system there? I tried using with Z device test but the information android OS is not enough.
I have to flash cm9 soon but first i must know all the info before to start this.
For modems is easy to see i have to tap on info about device that ok...but i need a full information so will help me a lot.
Thank for support
Ummmm.... How about go to settings, scroll down and touch "about phone" then look under "Kernel version"

Ya thought that but is just number not name kernel if that help lol
How i would figured it?
kernel current anyway is 2.6.35.7 [email protected]#1
If was a kernel for CM7 ok but using Fluxxi for example what is then? is based still cyanogen? or Fluxxi is just a name rom?
This give me a bit confuse..
I saw some topic talking about kernel for siyah but i still dont understand if was for cmw or is just a kernel different way to work with this phone.
For this i need understand what he did chinese update my phone and what current kernel..
EDIT= i found on site for AT&T http://downloadandroidrom.com/file/GalaxyS2ATT/kernels
So this mean there are only 3 kernels compatible on this SGH-I777 isnt?
If that so then i have to know which one of this 3 kernels is current on my phone hmmm someone could give me a hint please?
you are using the kernel that COMES PACKAGED WITH CM7
i dont know why you would go to some other website looking for info, when all you have to do is open up the dev section here and READ.
there are more than 3 kernels available to you, but not many options if you are staying on CM7. if you are staying on CM7, just leave the kernel alone...
you dont really need to know anything more about what you currently have on your phone, because its simple. you are running CM7 with the kernel that was packaged with the rom. any rom you flash will have a kernel with it...
you see kernel names and are confused, i get that, but if you open the dev section and read, you will see threads marked as [KERNEL] or [ROM]....pretty simple to distinguish the 2.
for CWM, with Samsung devices, all custom kernels have cwM packaged in them, you dont need to do anything else but flash the rom after following the instructions in the first post on the rom thread.

Take a snapshot of your "About phones" before and after flashing any custom ROM and you see the difference.
For more kernel detail, bring up "CPU Spy" and take a snapshot before and after, and compare.
"CPU Spy" is an app.

all roms come packaged with a kernel so as long as you have CWM (you do because you are on CM7), then you can flash to CM9 without thinking about changing any kernels.
Hey i wonderf why not all apps on market are avaiable on this device sgh-i777?

I didn't understand any of this lol. But are u trying to say an app developer told u that an app isn't compatible with your phone because of a custom ROM? If so that's crazy. And shouldn't affect anything. Normally when an app says its incompatible its because u changed the dpi. If u didn't, I would try clearing the data on Google framework and Google playstore.

Yes exactly that i try to say but what exactly mean dpi? I didn't know about it anyway and about clearing is there a thread about step to step for it? Thanks!

Yes. There are threads on both. Do a Google search for clearing google framework and do one for clearing playstore data. If u don't know what DPI is u probably didn't change it. DPI is the resolution size for the display on the phone. (How big or small things look on the phone) Stock DPI is 240 for our phones.

[Q] Stock Voltages CM10.1???

Hi all,
someone could tell me what are the standards voltages of CM10.1?
Really?? This is not hard to find mate. Most stock based custom kernels use them voltages. Also why didn't you ask on cm thread. I'm sure if you look on it you will find it there without having to ask

[Q] Change screen colors on CM 10.2

Hey, first of all thanks alot for all the development and crazy amount of information going on in here
I have searched but unfortunately I couldn't find a solution to my problem so I'm asking here. I recently installed official Cyanogenmod 10.2 stable release on my i9300 international S3 (since CM11 gave me some bugs) and it's pretty great so far, but I've been searching a way to change the color settings of the screen. On CM there are some built in ones but I don't really like those. On the 4.3 Stock Samsung ROM there was "Professional Photo" or something like that that I did like. Does anyone know what I can do? If I understood correctly kernels can do that sort of stuff but I didn't find a kernel to suit my needs.
Thanks in advance

Yes you understood it correctly If your Planning to run a ROM based on CM Screen modes like Dynamic, Professional Photo etc Are available only through custom Kernel.
In Sammy as v all know you can change it under settings but for CM unfortunately you have to stick to Kernel Settings to do that.
Almost All popular Kernels Have that option under Screen>MDNIE mode
All you have to do is select the right kernel
Unfortunatly You asked a Question in this Thread and Also Gave an answer for the same.
Just remeber that for CM ul have to stick to some Externel Kernel as these options wont be available with stock CM 10.2 Kernel as well
Just as a recommendation give GoogyMax , Boeffla, Agni a try as these gave me really good results(Special Thx to Dev's of the same )

Thanks for the reply
I've looked into GoogyMax and Boeffla but as far as I could tell they don't support color changing. If I do install them what can I do to change the colors?
And I have yet to install a kernel, does it come in a zip file that I can install in CWM?

I'm really frustrated because I like vanilla android and CM is just so much faster than TouchWiz (I'm no won Android Revolution HD 40.0), I switched just because of the GPS issue but I really don't want it as my daily driver.. Maybe a different AOSP based ROM you know that the GPS would work in?

Strange To hear that. Well ive never used Stock CM so cant Comment on that GPS issue.
As Far As Now the AOSP or AOKP Roms ive used have never Had this GPS issue. You Can Try Anyone From Below Thread (CM 10.2/1)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3/orig-development/10-04-index-roms-t2218825
For me i would have chosen between PACMAN PARANOID n SLIMBEAN . All are great for Daily use
Also Check out This ROM. MY personal favourite Amongst All. Bug Free and Stable , Archidroid but its KK
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3/development/rom-archidroid-v2-3-3-power-hands-t2354859
Yes CM is definately Smoother than TouchWIz( Thx to Free RAM ). But Try out the ArchiDroid Stock Sammy ROM. You Might Like it for its smoothness
Rom recommendations are not allowed on xda. You have to try out and search for which rom suits u the best same goes with kernels

android kernel

hello guys
i have a question and i hope that i will find an answer
my phone is SGS II I9100 and i want to install another model ROM like S5 or nexus rom , Xperia ROM ...
if i replace the kernel of the ROM by S II , Siyah or any i9100 supported kernel, will my phone boot without risks or problems??
please helpe me to know that and thnx
It wont boot.
Wysłane z mojego Xperia Z przy użyciu Tapatalka
So what should i doing to install another ROM??
All custom roms here on XDA are specific to the device and forum where you find them.......
S2 roms can only be found in the S2 forums.....
S5 roms can only be found in the S5 forums....
Sony roms......Sony forums.....
Nexus roms.......Nexus forums
etc, etc, etc........
Look here in the S2 forums and you'll find a wide variety of roms to choose from for THIS device.......
Some are basic CyanogenMod roms, some are stock based, some are themed to look like other devices......
You have ICS, JB, KK and LP based roms to choose from......basically you would be hard pressed to exhaust all the flashing possibilities presented on this forum......
One word of caution......If you're after usability and stability, steer clear of the LP based roms......While it's good that current roms are still being compiled for the S2, it is fair to say that the LP based roms are still relatively new, and are not as stable as the older (ICS, JB & KK) roms.
I'm not going to recommend one rom over another.....For one thing, it's against XDA rules, but more importantly, using custom roms is about trial and error.....about trying things out until YOU find a rom that suits YOU......
Basically it comes down to you putting in the screen time, doing your research and experimenting.......
XDA is a friendly bunch of people, and we'll be here to help if things go wrong, but if you learn the processes before you start modifying, things shouldn't go wrong.......
So....put in the screen time, choose what's best for you, and flash away......
Good luck and happy flashing.....
Keith.

easy, use dorimanX 8.44 v005 by computoncio here: http://dorimanx.casoncia.org/index....005-COMP-[16-17]-[29-09]-JB-SGII-PWR-CORE.zip
If you want a different version, here is the link to the folder: http://dorimanx.casoncia.org/index.php?dir=V8/
(You want any V8 version of the kernel because only the V8 kernels support stock Jelly Bean.
All you had to do was use the search function on XDA or a simple google search and the answers will be there
