[NC4 4.4.2 KK](towelroot) Root achieved from OTA NC4 - Verizon Galaxy Note 3 General

First post, I didn't see one about this already and want to let everyone know.
geohot has made it possible to root our VZW Stock Note 3 NC4 KitKat 4.4.2 via the website www.towelroot.com/
It's the most simple root tool I have ever used hands down. Go to the site on your mobile browser, click the lambda, download and run APK right on your phone. Device will reboot and you will have root. Just did this on my note 3 last night. Only thing I think you have to check is to make sure your kernel has a date of before June 3.

That worked. Root worked. SuperSU disabled knox. Awesome.

I got the worst of all possibilities. Installed towelroot, ran it, did not get SuperSu, but on restart, it shows as "Custom" which means that Knox was tripped. What are my options now? Running latest NC4 OTA update.

Not necessarily, boot into download mode and check know there. My phones said it since day 1 when I got it and threw on a custom rom. My Knox though is still 0x0. As I said you can check that on your download screen. I used towel root on another phone with no issues as well.

I installed towelroot, then used root checker to verify, then downloaded and installed supersu, then rebooted and let supersu disable knox. I'm on NC4 latest. It worked perfectly.

I didn't see the flash nc2 firmware via Odin, boots to black screen, I have no computer only note 10.1 tablet and vzw note 3. Anything I can do to get it back with out a computer?

No you will need to find access to to a computer to fix it. Keep it powered off or pull battery till such time you find someones pc to use.

Tried it exactly how you said. Got root, but it says SuperSu is missing the latest binary. I downloaded it and installed fiddle from the website.
But the important thing is I got titanium working so a big Thanks from me!

Is someone screwing with me? I am late to the Note 3 party, picking one up yesterday. Not going to activate unless I can root. I have searched high and low for 1.1.6, have found everything but that version. Is there something specific I should search for, a hint within the forum rules? Thanks! I tried VRoot after getting frustrated and it failed.

I looked at the Forum rules and didn't see anything against posting the link, so here it is:

This is the Afterdawn Kingo 1.1.6 installer. It will give you 3 options trying to install AVG as your antivirus. Make sure you uncheck those boxes. After you download the file choose open to install. It's easy to figure out after that. If you need help with it post back.

Ok i got this link from someone earlier, mid rooting it messed up my screen where it will not recognize touch unless i used s-pen. Couldnt find a fix for it, top of the screen worked but bottom portion would not respond to touch. I ended up unrooting and formatting twice and it mysteriously started working normal again.

CF-Auto-Root for SM-G900T (T-Mobile US)

@Chainfire has released his CF-Auto-Root for the SM-G900T (T-Mobile US) Galaxy S 5.
I take no credit whatsoever for this, just posting a link to his main thread for all to see.
Please go and thank Chainfire!
With this root accomplished, we can confirm that the T-Mobile bootloader is UNLOCKED.
ROMS/Kernels/Recovery will soon follow from our awesome devs here on XDA.
Link to CF-Auto-Root Main Thread(Multi-variants)
THIS WILL TRIP KNOX COUNTER TO 0x1
ODIN Instructions - Copied from Main CF thread
Follow these instructions to the letter. Do not touch any buttons or checkboxes that are not listed below to touch!
- Download and unzip the CF-Auto-Root-....zip file (see posts below this one)
- If you end up with a recovery.img and cache.img file, you've extracted twice. You need to end up with a .tar.md5 file - don't extract that one
- (USB) Disconnect your phone from your computer
- Start Odin3-vX.X.exe
- Click the PDA button, and select CF-Auto-Root-....tar.md5
- Put your phone in download mode (turn off phone, then hold VolDown+Home+Power to boot - if it asks you to press a button to continue, press the listed button, or run adb reboot download command)
- (USB) Connect the phone to your computer
- Make sure Repartition is NOT checked
- Click the Start button
- Wait for Android to boot
- Done (if it took you more than 30 seconds, you need practise!)
NOTE: Sometimes the device does *not* boot into recovery mode and root your device. Just do the entire procedure again if this happens. If it still will not install root and such, make sure that in Odin "Auto Reboot" is not checked. Then after flashing, pull the battery, and boot with VolUp+Home+Power button to boot into recovery manually. This will start the install process.
New to Samsung? Unfamiliar with Odin? Think all the above is a hassle? Get used to it. It's very simple, and us Samsung folk use Odin (or Mobile ODIN ) for everything! It's so very very convenient once you get used to it. Notice the 30 second comment above? For experienced users, the entire process indeed takes only 30 seconds!

You can run the auto-root on both the updated version from kies, or straight outta the box.
I am trying to get in touch with the developers about TWRP and CWM, but I am sure they are busy trying to get all variants working.
I wouldn't Odin the international TWRP or CWM though. I would wait for a version for us.

I wouldn't count on it. at least the Triangle away...Knox still hasn't been figured out for previous devices on how to reset it, so I wouldn't count on it for this device. As for getting root without tripping knox, Maybe kingo will update, or root-de-la-vega....who knows at this point.

There basically won't be a way of resetting Knox.
Because of it being more a hardware flag, once it is tripped it is not reversible.
There might eventually be a way to do it without tripping it, but I wouldn't expect that for a while.

Yes, though root has nothing to do with this. The bootloader is unlocked, which is why root was obtainable via Chainfire's custom recovery. We have no restrictions on flashing custom ROMs/kernels/recoveries/etc.
I may start working on a custom TW kernel myself once Samsung uploads the source...

Tmo warranty
Hi,
I'm debating if I should upgrade to SGS5, now that we can root the phone.
Does anyone knows for sure that a tripped Knox means no warranty with T-mo? I'm under the Jump plan and the idea is that I will be able to have warranty on the device if something happens to it (and I do have some apps that must use root...)
Thanks,
Gil.

Are we 100% certain that the bootloader is indeed unlocked. I know that chainfire stated this (although he currently doesnt own the s5).
I just came from HTC, and it states when you boot whether the bootloader is locked or unlocked. Im assuming there is no simple way of knowing whether the bootloader is locked or unlocked like the HTC devices

There are reliable sources saying yes it is unlocked and there are reliable sources saying no it still hasn't been confirmed until someone successfully flashes a custom rom/kernel/recovery.
The consensus around here seems to be that it is unlocked but its just people repeating the words of the original few that debated it. And of course since we all want it to be unlocked, it is easier to believe that it is.
I personally don't want to jump to conclusion so i want there to be more discussion on the matter. Therefore i requested the "boot loader un/locked" thread to be reopened in Q/A.
i want to walk down to the store and buy one right now but until its confirmed im waiting it out. $650 bet!

Allow hotspot tether on rooted NK1...

FYI. Under NC5, I was able to use the standard hotspot to tether by using Wanam Xposed's "Disable Tether Provisioning." That didn't work after an upgrade to NK1. But, the good news is that the X Tether Xposed module does seem to work fine.
(FoxFi didn't work under NK1, either)
so wait does nk1 use the same root method as was suggested for ng6? (use nc5 kernel, root, ng6 kernel, reboot)

I was able to Root using the steps in the link above, flashing down with Odin, towelroot, flash back up.
However, the .zip linked above did not work for me. It is saying "Footer is wrong, signature verification failed" to both things it is trying to install.

I used Odin to flash the firmware from NK1 down to NC1 (I think), to towelroot, than back up to NK1.
All that went fine, and root is working fine. I used no-bloat to remove a bunch of stuff and have used SuperManager and SQLite Editor to edit stuff that I would need Root to do. The phone is rooted, and I didn't use safestrap.
Do I need safestrap to load these .zip modifications for Wifi / Tether? Seems like they are supposed to load direct from recovery mode. Am I wrong?

Ok, I have never used SafeStrap, but I have it installed on my phone, and I have the .zip files still. Anyone have a guide thats a little more explicit than, "Now install it?"
EDIT:
NM, using XDA Modules, I grabbed X Tether and it works like a champ! Thank for the direction though!!!
Their is a way to enable the tether without safe strap but involves a lot more knowledge of unzipping and file permissions or you well end up with boot loop.
On my daughter's phone I just installed safe strap 3.72 installed the zip then uninstalled safe strap. Works great on hers and mine even adds the toggle you can turn it on and off.

Yes, it works fine. Just make sure to have a shortcut to towelroot on your home screen. With the nc5 kernel flashed it's only moments until reboot / lockup. But with the shortcut there I was able to root, reflash the nk1 kernel and update SUPERSU binary and all root apps are working fine.
A hack to get native tether going would be great. Let me know if anyone has a way to do this.

Hey Matthew!
I have the OF1 and want to root my phone. I have gone to the One Root site and they couldn't root it and refunded my money. I never rooted a phone, but it doesn't look too hard to do for I saw a guy do it on a video using Odin 3 and it took a lot of steps, but it didn't look hard. I never rooted a phone, but I'm freakin' going to. I want my phone back. I keep trying to download all the stuff you guys say to download, but Wondershare is not for Windows 10 and every time I try to download something I can't because it's in a strange file format and my comp is evidently not intelligent enough to open it. Also when I go to download an APK file opener they tell me I need to download something ELSE in order to use the APK file opener and I can't open THAT file. Do you see where I'm going with all this? Is there a place where us folks who have no clue what is going on can get ALL the stuff we need in one place? Or no? There has to be an easier way.
FIRST of all where can I download a file opener that opens ALL types of files? I KNOW one HAS to exist. I just haven't found it yet. Once I get that file opener then maybe the files I download can be opened. After this task is complete I will need to know step by step how to use Odin to complete the root and I will get someone to explain that to me later.
Thanks Matthew.

There is a file explorer on the Google play store called es file explorer. It has opened nearly every file I've downloaded and it supports apks as well. As for a simple one click root, the easiest way to do it for of1 is to use wondershare following the guide in the general section. Now for if wondershare doesn't work after the kernel downgrade then you should try kingroot. Google all about root I believe there is an article somewhere explaining everything you need to know

Thanks for your timely response Matthew. I already tried Kingroot and Kingo Root, both failed after multiple attempts. From what I have been reading people have been downgrading their kernel version back to something that can be rooted. I have Samsung Galaxy S-4 SCHi545 Build number LRX22C.i545VRUGOF1 and when I look at my system updates it says my phone was updated to that particular build on Aug. 24th 2015. When I click on "Show system update history" it says my my software was updated to i545VRUGOC1 on April 30th, 2015. Seems like people are...like you said...downgrading to an previous kernal so they can root their phones because these higher level software updates have non-exploitable features so we can't root these phones.
Now having said all that it looks like I need to downgrade my kernal for even you say I need to try Wondershare after I downgrade my kernal. I've seen videos on downgrading the kernals using Odin 3, but when I tried to download Odin 3 on my comp I couldn't because my comp couldn't open the files that were trying to be downloaded. I will try to download the es file explorer to use. Now this app goes on my comp or my phone because I need to get Odin on my comp to use, not my phone. In other words does Google Play have apps to download to your comps like File explorer?
I've had to do a lot of reading the last two days so I figure out you guys' language and to learn all about rooting. I feel like I am close to my goal of emancipating my freakin' phone out of the hands of TYRRANY!

Odin should download to a zip file which is natively compatible for windows. If you are unable to open zip files for whatever reason you will have to Google how for your certain operating system. When I said es file Explorer I meant for your phone.

want to root sch i545
I have the exact same phone and problem. I would not try to root unless there is an easy way as I don't know enough about how it works if the solution is complicated. Please post as soon as you find a way to root it Thanks

i don't know for sure but probably not. I have had the phone for two years now and the bootloader was never locked previously
I wish I had that link about an hour ago, but figured out how to use the SamFirm Tool posted in another thread. Happy Flashing everyone
Also. First boot is taking ages
I'm so excited! AH. I need to get Odin now -.-
How does everyone like it so far?
Also, does anyone know if it would be a good idea for me to flash back to the stock Lollipop rom and then flash the update via Odin? I'm on a custom rom right now and I don't know if that will mess things up.
I was rooted on FOL1, flashed the marshmallow update via odin. Make sure you factory reset to set the binary status as offical, because I'm having booting issues

Have you been able to Root? Please share your experience. Can't wait really!
I'm still waiting on the update to boot.
Hmmm, after rebooting and upgrading the "google Play Services" app, Google play finds an update for Samsung Voice Recorder which won't update and crashes with an error code 505. Will try and mess with the permissions for that app.
Decided to flash the stock rooted rom and update via Kies. As of right now it is optimizing app 105/273
Update: It rebooted after optimizing the last app and now its been hanging out at the T-Mobile screen for the last four or so minutes
Update 2: FINALLY got it to boot :3 I ended up flashing the image again through Odin~
Update 3: Rooted (followed this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmo...sm-g900t-firmware-t3358190/page4#post66995024)
Yay~ Marshmallows
Edit: It looks like some people are having trouble with this update so I'm going to give a quick rundown of what I did and how I got everything to go smoothly. Now I'm not saying this is the correct way to things because most likely it isn't, but this is is just what I did that worked (for me, hopefully for you too).
Step 1. I flashed the stock rooted rom on my phone and unrooted it (not sure if this part is necessary) and then connected it to Kies to let it update that way (I was too lazy to mess with Odin tbh).
Step 2. After realizing I had been stuck on the T-Mobile splash screen for about 20 minutes to long I downloaded the image from the Mega link provided on this thread. Booted the phone into download mode, flashed via Odin, phone booted properly in no time.
Step 3. Installed Custom Recovery and Rooted the phone following the method in the link posted above.
MARSHMALLOW PARTY~
So I installed via Odin and as I was going through the initial setup it asks about WiFi and I turn it on and it keeps turning itself off after a few seconds.
UPDATE: Rebooted and was able to get WiFi to stay on.

What root options should we be trying? CF Auto Root?
I installed this over the top of Lollipop using Odin. all my data carried over and everything seems to be running just fine. Installed TWRP and SuperSU, roots working just fine as well.
Only issue I'm coming across is an update to the Samsung voice recorder in the Play Store keeps failing with error 505.

I successfully rooted marshmallow with flashing twrp (latest version) via odin 3.11.1 then flashing superSU 2.74 in twrp = profit?!?!
Next I may try a debloat script I found around xda then viperfx4android. Thank you T-Mobile

I'm running it now, haven't even bothered to root it... found a non root app to backup and restore my sms/mms/calllogs so I'm not in a hurry to root. Might be fun to actually be able to use the fingerprint for payment options now...
