Hey guys, ever since flashing a custom ROM onto my Verizon GS4, I've had issue with getting my phone's location. Given the location options on 4.4.3, the phone is able to get a rough location on the High Accuracy setting but can't do anything under Device Alone. As such, I'm pretty sure it's the GPS having issues. Others have had compass problems with the ROM I'm currently on, but everyone seems to be able to get a GPS lock when I can't. I've done a dirty flash, a clean flash, and even redownloaded the .zips from other locations in case the file was bad, but nothing has solved my problem. I use my phone's location settings for a variety of apps, so I'd really like to get it working again. Does anyone know of diagnostics I could perform? My hope is that it's just a software issue, and that I didn't do any permanent damage to the hardware. Thanks for the help!
(also, I'm posting here because I'm new to the forum and can't post in the developer threads yet)
Try faster fix in the play store. I've used it with several roms on several phones and it is very good

I looked up the fix you're talking about. Others seem to have had success through the gps status apps available on the playstore. Unfortunately, they didn't have any effect on my phone. I'm still stuck at searching for GPS on any app that uses it. Those who had success seem to have had it with a ROM that originally worked, but lost the ability to successfully connect. My issue seems to be in the ROM itself, or at least that's what makes sense to me. Thanks for the advice and trying to help.

I have tried faster GPS (running 4.4.4, so faster fix is a no-no) with no success. It replaces the file detailing GPS information and the like, but I'm still stuck searching for GPS permanently.

Hello,
I'm seems to be having this issue since I've installed my first modded rom or Radio.
Cannot recall it just now.
It does not matter which rom I have installed but the only way to get GPS working is to reboot the phone. Since then the gps works ok for some time.
Does anyone experience the same issue? Any solutions?
Cheers

I can offer 2 suggestions.
1) Give "GPS Status" a try. Android Market. **Edit: use this app to download new GPS data. Can't remember exactly what it's called.
2) Go to this post (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8176243&postcount=1)and search for "GPS". There are 3 files. Europe, US and Asia. Try the one for your location.
Option 2 usually works for me. I think it is compatible with any ROM.
Thanks,
flashing the radio and Heroine seem to fixed the issue.
I will keep testing it in next few days
I would also suggest the app 'GPS Status and Toolbox'.
If that fails then try a different radio.
How did you get on after a few days?
Hi, I bought a Motorola Atrix in Amazon 2 months ago. Since start the Gps din't work at all, 0 in view in apps like "Gps test". I tried almost everything: changing gps.conf, flashing radios, using custom roms like Nottachtrix and CM7, and reverting back to stock via rsd. Btw, a friend of mine who bought the same phone at the same time, had problems with gps in stock rom, but after flashing CM7, it worked just fine.
So, I ask you to help me giving any ideas to fix this.
Maybe this can be useful: The Atrix came with Italian retail rom and N_01.100.00R radio.
Thanks a lot.
PS: Sorry if I don't write quite well, I'm not an english natural speaker.

If you use an app such as GPS status do you pick up any satellites? It seems to be a common problem to find the satellites but not to be able to get a lock.
Also is you install GPS Status it will allow you to update the agps files.
Did you try gps lock with data access enabled? And as eddhard said do you pick any satellites?
In the gps settings menu turn OFF the options to use mobile networks or wifi. Then use the gps status or gps test app outside in a clear view for a minute or two. If it reports an accuracy distance as 0 or an error there is an issue with your gps that I might have a solution for.
For no reason my gps straight up failed to get a lock. In the test apps, it would see 9-10 satellites with strong signal but never wanted to get a lock. Multiple multiple factory resets, formats, any other variable I tried to change and the issue persisted.
I've attached the file that fixed the issue for me. Extract the libnmea.so and place it in your /system/lib folder after you make a backup of the existing file. Let us know if that helps.

Thanks for your answers, the problem isn't the locking of any of the sats. Test apps show "0 in view" even on outdoors.
I don't have a solution. But I've had a lot of difficulty with GPS on my Atrix as well. I can get a lock usually after a minute or so, but then the GPS would go to sleep. So if I'm moving or logging a route, it'll show me where I started even after several minutes. I flashed radios, updated gps conf, and used GPS Status & Toolbox to get a lock. Still no improvement. It helped me get the initial lock, and didn't resolve the freezing issue. I eventually gave up and bought separate GPS. So I'd be interested to know if you find a way to fix this.
Guys, if you don't see any satellites in GPS Status app, maybe is hardware issue. If you have warranty, use it. If you don't, try to disassemble your phone and look. Maybe just cable is disconnected or has bad contact. Of course be very careful with disassembling or ask someone with experiences. Youtube guide how to change digitizer on Atrix could be useful.
Good luck
I had problems with GPS fix on AT&T atrix 4g with N_01.100.00R europe radio. After flashing 37p at&t radio gps works perfectly, fix is really fast.
Also WiFi signal strength increased.
I have been using CM for years, first on the Evo 4G and now on the GS3. Ever since I can remember, I've had issues with GPS on CM. In the Evo days, I always remember flashing a GPS fix (or doing a CLR fix after flashing in from a Sense ROM). Now, with the GS3, I continue to have challenges with GPS on CM. When I had the M builds, I had decent performance with GPS and could get the navigation to lock - as well as maps finding my location. Ever since I went to the CM10 stable build, the navigation just sticks on "waiting for location" and the maps cannot find my location. Super frustrating. I even switched over to AOKP for the time being as the GPS seems to be working great (as well as most of the other features).
I am still itching to get back to CM though...
Here are my questions:
1. Is there a flashable fix for the GPS problem in CM10 on the GS3?
2. I've seen that a few people flashed into ICS, locked nav, and then flashed back to CM - does this work? if so, after doing this, can I re-flash a backup or do I have to wipe clean first?
3. Even if one of the two fixes above works, will I still have sub-par performance with GPS?
Thanks in advance.
Not my answer, rochers from androidforums:
took me quite some time to figure this one out, thought i should post it here in case anyone else has a similar problem.
When i updated to android 4.1.2, i noticed that my google navigation stopped working. It would simply sit there endlessly "waiting for location..." fortunately, there's a simple fix:
1. Go to "settings > accounts > google > location settings".
2. Flip the switch to "on" (i found this was off in my case).
3. Try google navigation again, it should work fine.
I'm not sure why google decided to break up the location settings into two different places like this, but it's a bit silly imo as it's definitely going to catch some people out.
Found this solution on xda, cant post link, but this works.

Just got my phone back from mobile tech..immediately unlocked, flashed a recovery and threw on viper 1.3.0 with elkays 096 kernel.
Everything runs great but I cannot get a GPS lock in Google maps ever.
I have downloaded a couple GPS test apps and I'll get 8/11 or 10/12 satellites and it gets ever so close to getting a lock in maps but never does.
Any ideas? Could the JTAG have "fried" the GPS?
Or should I try a stock Rom and kernel and see the behavior there?
I drive way too much to not have an accurate GPS lock on my phone.
Any ideas or help is much appreciated in advance.

Apparently Google is having some problem with location services across multiple devices. I really cannot wait for this to be resolved as it is somewhat of a safety hazard, and my friend just lost his phone and cannot locate it due to this issue.
I can't get a lock either in any apps. Any suggestions?

Same here had mine Jtaged and now no locks i see 0/19 sats but will not lock on Stock or Custom Roms.
There is some problem with the new version of google maps. Last night I used it to navigate me to my daughter's friend's house and it totally navigated me to the wrong place a few blocks away, even though it showed the correct destination on the map. It was really odd. I hope they fix it because I liked their navigation program before that last major update.
Regarding the GPS, try an app called "GPS Test" from play store. It will show all the satellites and will tell you how accurate your lock is. Make sure you run this when you are out side with clear view of the sky for optimum testing. Also I would try a stock rom for testing too. I know the aosp roms had some gps issues early on. Make sure your radios are updated too. Radios need to be updated separately from roms. I think there was a gps update in one of those radios updates, but I am not positive on that. Good luck.
hey guys, I somehow can't get a GPS lock when I'm running SlimBean, but I can get it when I'm using Neat ROM. How do i get it to lock when I'm using SlimBean?
Did you read other users experiences in SlimBean thread? It's probably a problem with the ROM or kernel, try a different rom or version or kernel.
Since flashing 4.3.1 and now Im using 4.4 Pound rom, I have had major GPS problems too.
Sometimes, it could take upwards of 5 minutes to find a lock. If I flashed back to stock 4.1.2, it looks within seconds. I've searched all over the internet for a solution. Flashing gps config files and enabling static GPS and trying tons of programs from the play store, nothing worked.
So what I do now is when I want a quick fix, I enable the GPS to not only look for the GPS satellites, but to also use the network. For some reason, this gets me a fix within a few seconds. I can then disable the network part and try again and it fixes instantly.
I cant explain it, but whatever, it works.

your stock sammy rom is probably localised to your country whilst a custom rom is not.
Try gps-fix apps from the play store. Or a new kernel
