S3 battery problems - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
Recently, compagny for the one i work bought around 100 Galaxy S3 for the technician on the road and for everyone else. Most of us found that the battery doesnt last the full day. Around 3-4 hours and we all work mostly 8-10 hours per day.
We installed Airwatch to prevent users of installing apps in the phone butwe still have problem with the battery... Phone cant be root / custom roms.
Is there another way to removed nearly all applications that we dont want and that can drain battery. We only need like bluettoth, phone email and calendar. All the rest can be removed to save battery.
Thanks a lot

No not without root... Most system apps are bloatware and can be removed to improve performance and battery life but like i said you need root to do this.
You can do things to save battery life like turn screen display down turn off gps etc also you can also download apps from play store to help save battery (but these are not as effective as uninstalling system apps) and since you have barred the download of apps this obviously is not possible.

thanks a lot for the answer

Do u mean 3-4 screen on time or standby time?

[Q] Battery drains over night on my LG p500

I have a LG optimus One P500 with 2.3.3 stock OS and i have high battery consumption . i check the battery status in the morning and it shows that cell standby and phone idle takes 45 - 50% after 1d and 6h .
Is this normal ? It happens every one or two days. So when i go to bed the device is charged but in the morning i have 75% of battery left.
excuse my english !
P.S. with only 3 or 4 apps installed ! that does not cosume battery .
Please help or advice!
Hmmm doesnt seem normal.I get just 1-2% battery drain overnight, but i have rooted my phone and installed franko gb kernel.U can read the guides and try installing this kernel.
P.S:I also had somehow high battery drain with stock kernal, but not as much as yours.
I had a similar situation once. I fixed it by copying all the files off the SD card, format the card (using the menu on the phone settings-storage-format) then copy the data back.
It appears a something was going wrong with the card.
Ice
thanks i will try this at first and see if the problem is solved . If not i dont know...
It drains battery on GB !(Lg Optimus One P500)
So after 13 hours my battery was at 19% on my Lg P500
I checked in Settings/applications/Battery use and guess what :
Cell stanby 31%
Phone idle 30%
voice calls 39% , and when i tapped the meter on top of the display to see the graffic i found out that the line assigned to "awake" it is uninterrupted.
And now after 1 hour after charging the battery use section : cell standby 50%
phone idle48% and display 4% ! AND all the lines in graffic are also uninterrupted.
ADVICE NEEDED !

If the Awake bar is uninterrupted, then some background apps are running continuosly in the background, even when the phone's screen is off. This should not happen unless you have turned ON data-sync and if you've applications which try to connect to internet every 10 mins like facebook, twitter. Check these. You can see what are all the applications running in the background in Settings -> Applications -> Running Services
Yeah...such applications do sync often and you have to make sure that they dont sync every 30 mins for example.
Having root and installed setcpu could makes such differences, for instance, you could make a custom Sleep profile, which undervolt your cpu frequencies when the display is off. Having this and your phone could get enough sleep while you were

Did you transfer songs or any other media recently? My stock phone had a bug wherein a new media transfer would trigger an unending SD Card scan which would suck battery like Ms. Jameson.
I solved it by deleting those files.

How did you discover that this bug was active? Would it actually keep saying Scanning SD Card or something? Because I have had noticeably higher battery drain just yesterday after transferring all my old files back into a newly partitioned card + newly flashed ROM. Just using the ROM and card before moving the files gave me a maximum of 1 day and 5 hours... Today it went to 50% in 8 hours.
I did but by usb cable. After that i erased all data.
Today after 12 hours i have 76% left . It's very strange! Do you have an explanation? I wonder.
Thanks

Oh so that worked? Great.
I was testing a friends music player app when it happened to me. I told him that his album art rendering was very buggy, so we both ended up investigating and he found that the stock rom was performing continous scans. I didn't see icons or anything.

How can you tell if your phone is continuously scanning the sd card?
We at caynogen mod 7 enjoy the sleep button about zero percent change in sleep mode ...its great .. well I was no help to you but I hope you fix your problem

Indeed it's drained battery terribly after upgrade stock rom to official version 2.3.3 (V20D in my country). I have the same problem as well. I found it 25% battery life gone after 4 hours from fully charged status before upgrading to version V20D. I did try playing or testing the GPS & data network 2G (GSM) around after done upgrade. Previously in V20G Android version 2.2.2, 1 full day drained battery for about 30% only.
I have tried GO Launcher EX app before on v2.2.2. I wonder if I should install this launcher app again. Will Launcher app drain more battery life or save power battery? Seeking any recommendation from xda experts here. Please advise.
Thank you.
drains no more
Now that you have 2.3.3 you must kill some apps . try in settings/apps/running and see what apps are active ,then you go to all apps and close apps that are running.
In my case google maps , facebook , yahoo mail and another 2 apps drained my battery . So i closed them and it's ok ! Now every time i use them i stop them after.

if you Maps installed then Uninstall it.
it starts up any time it wants and takes a lot of battery.
Hello.
First I would like to thank istoner for the this great advice. I had the same problem with my optimus one and this helped me a lot.
I just bought the phone a week ago and about 3 days ago i installed winamp app and transfered a few mp3's on the sd card. Just last evening, when i stumbled into this topic, I realised that my high battery drain problem started just after i did the fore mentioned changes to my phone.
Yesterday(data from "Battery use" in Settings) with ~14h since full charge i had like 20% battery left with moderate use during day. So after that, I followed this advice and removed the whole folder from sdcard containing the mp3's and let the phone charging over night again. I used the phone with the same moderation as yesterday. As i'm writing this i'm reading from "Battery use" a 13h 52m uptime since last full charge and my batter is at 74% percent left.
I can't tell you how glad i am i stumbled into this topic. I was just ready to uninstall all my apps and possibly get the phone in service.
I find this a somewhat important problem of the cellphone and i think more users should be informed about this. Could be a nice addition to some faq/tips and tricks topics.
I still have a couple of questions though and i hope someone will be nice enough to answer them.
What could be the cause of this problem? The android os(upgraded official 2.3.3 from stock 2.2.*), the phone's hardware or the sdcard?
What is there to do if I, let's say, go on a trip and i need some music to listen to on my phone?
Thank you.
i highly recommend to FREEZE it using titanium backup pro..
den unfreeze it if your gonig to use it
Afaik Titanium Backup is for rooted phones. Mine is not, as i said i'm using official 2.3.3. I don't know if i'm gonna root it atm just for using titanium backup.
I still hope there is another workaround that doesn't involve rooting the phone.

Question for ya. Are you running any custom roms or just stock rooted?
The reason i ask is simply because if you are running any ics+ roms, your battery life odds are will be significantly decreased, its like that for phones who even have official ics/jb
If your on just a rooted stock rom, odds are the bloat ware is draining your juice. Sprint/moto have a bunch of background apps/services that will run at startup.
Few recommendations for you.
Settings:
1)Turn off auto brightness, and simply set your phone to a brightness that is low, but easily visible indoors/out
2)Ensure gps is off unless you are using a navigation app (please dont use the crap one built in, drains battery, lags, is rele only a trial, etc)
3)If you are not in the habit of locking ur phone when you are not on it, set your timeout for the screen to 15 seconds
4) Turn off background sync/ use only on wifi
Apps:
1)Download a root uninstall app to remove apps.
2)Download a autorun management app to disable unnecessary crap
3)Possibly buy a nice root toolbox, ie, rom toolbox pro.
4)Use battery calibrator for root phones and follow instructions
Aftermarket:
1) buy an extended battery
2) buy a spare or 2 batteries. (look on amazon, buy the two aftermarket batteries/wallcharger/ Lanyard) Youll never need to worry about your battery again. lol
3) Buy an independent charger/power source, you know, the ones that you charge, and then use to charge on the go without any wires
None of these things are guaranteed to help, but thats what i can think of off the top of my head as far as solutions go. The photon has a surprisingly small charge battery considering all the phone can do.
Hope something here helps at least a little

My apologies for the delay in my response. I haven't run the stock rom since week 2 of me owning the phone. That was quite some time ago.
i will link you to a very old thread here in the development section that i used to remove all the sprint crap.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1217134
Keep in mind it is a good idea to ensure you know how to revert back if need be.
You have 3 options here really, i will list them in the order i recommend
1) Get yourself either that toolkit i mentioned(Works good for all of your needs) or a root uninstallation app that offers you the ability to backup/restore/freeze apps
2) Use a file manager app with root privileges to browse your phones system files, and rather then deleting the apps, simply rename them with an easily recognizable extention, IE: .backup, .bak, .back (You get the idea)
3) You can delete apps manually as instructed in the thread, be sure you read it thoroughly, and know what apps you delete disable (google search the apk and what it is if you are unsure)
Good luck mate
Ive Pac'ked my bags, and am on my PacMopho. *Cheers*

Mysterious battery drain. Please help! (need PROs)

Intro
Hello I'm a very old lurker in this forum yet a new member and this is my first post so please don't kill me if I failed to follow the rules or if my English sucks. I will try to organize this thread and make it clear and easy to understand and read, while providing as much information as I can.
The Problem
So my i9100 has been having extreme battery drain lately, about 2% per 3 minutes. I refrain from using it throughout the day to help my battery hold until night. When I do so, it is usually about 40% by the time I go to sleep with having BARELY used the phone. Probably just now and then to answer a Whatsapp message or to check the time. I've long ago uninstalled all games since I can't even think of playing games with this horrible battery status.
How it started
The last thing I can remember before starting to have this problem is about a year(?) ago when I was on Jellybam. I had good battery, and then a build with an excellent battery came out and it worked perfectly. I can't remember which version it was, but a little after that, I updated Jellybam and noticed SUPER battery drain. I waited a little for the next updates but it wasn't fixed, so I changed a ROM. I noticed that it wasn't helping. So I tried the following for a couple of months now:
Attempts To Solve The Problem
I have tried the following:
Using lowest screen brightness
Disabling obvious stuff like GPS, Bluetooth, Wifi, 3G
Closing or even NOT installing any known battery consuming apps
NOT using task killers
USING task killers
Underclocking
Removing widgets. Using least icons possible on launcher
Using many different launchers
Changing ROMs, kernels and both
Reverting back to stock
Buying a new battery (extended and not original)
Trying a new original battery from a friend who has i9100
Flashing modems and RILs, including GetRIL. In fact, I've had better battery with worse signal (but not always). I think it was with XXLPH or XXLPW.
Using battery savers like JuiceDefender which basically do everything I've already tried. What's a smartphone without internet
Using BetterBatteryStats and Gsam Battery Monitor Pro. Did not notice anything special (but I am not pro enough to understand everything on BBS, though I googled some of the things and haven't noticed something unusual). Maybe some pro can help me with it.
Assumptions / Notes
A couple of versions ago, I have used Omega ROM version 4.2.1 which suddenly fixed(?!) my battery. I can't remember which build it was, but the new one doesn't fix the battery drain. I assume it could be due to the radio update to XXMS2
I have a feeling that the drain is related to the modem (aka baseband), because I've had some more battery-friendly modems and some less
I have tried many modems that are supposed to work perfectly (and really gave me good connection speed and signal), but they did not fix the battery drain. Even on stock rom
My provider is Golan Telecom, which is supposed to work good with Cellcom modems, but it didn't. At least not battery-wise
Last resort can be taking it to a lab, but it's hard for me to stay without my phone, and I think people here are more skilled than the noobs in the lab.
Can the problem be hardware-related but not battery-related? May it be caused by the huge amount of times I've flashed ROMs and kernels?
Had my phone for around 2 years
Never bricked my phone
Sorry for being a burden to this forum with this first post of mine, but thanks a TON of anyone who can shed some light on this problem for me!
*I have attached one log of BBS
2h screen on , 3h wifi running and 50% how you did that?

It doesn't look horrendous to me. Things to do though :
1. Grant BBS root rights. Need it to see network and alarms.
2. Did you play music at all? If not, you need to diagnose apps which are putting out sound. Viber is a common culprit.
3. Deleted_wakelocks comes when you turn wifi off. As it's so large, something is killing you when you're on wifi. My guess would be wlan_rx_wakelock. Basically you need to turn off wifi when you're not actively using it to avoid the drain from it. "Better wifi on/off" may be an app which helps you out there, it'll automate the turning of wifi on and off with your screen.

Thanks for your reply.
1. I have given it root rights, and will soon upload an updated log
2. I haven't played music at that time, not that I remember, but even with different players or not players at all, and without sound on keypress, the same drain is occuring. Also, I have long ago stopped using Viber as it eats the battery even more. My battery can't afford to have Viber :/
3. The drain seems to continue with or without wifi. I usually leave my wifi on when I'm at home, like now, but I have also tried, many times, to leave 3G without wifi and see if the battery improves. It didn't, unfortunately.

Android 4.3 is draining my battery on standby!

Hi XDA
I literally don't know what to do with my Samsung Galaxy SIII for a bout half a year ago i updated my phone to Android 4.3 and things went a bit weird. First thing I noticed was that the phone was really slow to wake up from standby, sometimes I had to take out the battery because nothing happen. The second thing is that it sometimes get really hot even on standby. I can't make it though half a day without charging my phone! Today it got mad at my phone again and was searching around the web for a solution, I came by lot of forums with people who was dealing with the same problem, but no fix able. I found a guy who had a an app which could register the battery usage in a graph. After running the app i noticed the same as the guy from the video - my phone is pretty normal on use, but then I turn the phone on standby it goes insane (look at the picture linked below)..
I don't know how to deal with the problem. I have gone though the applist to see any remarkable apps, but nothing has cough my attention.
I hope you guy are willing to help me - Save my phone!

Wrong phone forum!!!
Here is your phone forum http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3
Hi, did you solved your problem?
If not, i'd recommend System Panel app. Download it, install, launch. Then go to Menu->Settings, check Enable monitoring option. Then let your phone to be in idle mode several hours - maybe before going to bed. After it - go to SP->Menu->Monitoring->History (in bottom right corner)->Press chart in top left corner->Top apps. Then you'll see top applications that worked in idle mode.
For more information go to 4pda russian forum and search "Советы по улучшению энергосбережения устройств на Android OS" thread - google translate will helps
Try This,,,,,,
I think some app is malfunctioning , i would suggest using Greenify if u r rooted ,
And if u r on Stock ROM then i would suggest u to delete or disable the BLOATWARE.
It helped me hope this was helpful
4.3 on the S3 is extremely buggy especially without Samsung's patch ( which didn't do much ). There isn't much that you can do on stock Touchwiz, except maybe flash a custom kernel. I would suggest flashing a custom rom, but that is up to you. There are many choices for custom roms here including Touchwiz, if you like it.
I've been experiencing disappointing battery life since the android 4.3 update last month on my non-LTE t-mo galaxy s3. I know there's been a lot of discussion and advice by t-mo reps on various forums, but it simply isn't accurate. The party line is "something you installed on your phone is causing increased battery drain after the 4.3 update." However, my partner and I have two identical T-mo galaxy S3's. We have entirely different sets of apps installed on our phones. As soon as we installed the 4.3 update, both of our phones started to drain rapidly faster than before the update. On 4.2 our phones would last to 50% by the end of the day (~8pm) with light to moderate use. Now they're at ~20% by the end of the day, and I can see my battery levels drop faster just while using the phone. This is totally unacceptable. I've downloaded battery monitoring apps, and no apps I've installed are draining the battery, it's the system and kernel that take up most of the cpu. People are saying it's the touchwiz additions that are causing the system to use up more cpu cycles. I refuse to do a factory reset because there's so many reports of this not doing anything. There's clearly a bug in the 4.3 update for the SG3, unless it's touchwiz as everyone seems to indicate. How can I check to see if something is causing too many wakes?
4.3 works prefect here. same battery life as with 4.0 or 4.1.
it's not the fault of 4.3.

Question Anyone with high Mobile Network standby battery drain

I used to have the classic Mobile Network standby battery drain issue, until I flashed CalyxOS.
I left my phone with 100% battery before I went to bed last night and woke up this morning 8 hours later with no drain of any kind at all.
Might be an option for anyone else with the same issue.
Interesting. So that confirms it's a software issue and not hardware. Which is a relief. It means Google can fix it via OTA update. Hopefully enough people reported it that Google took notice. i am on chat with google now and they want me to factory reset. I was hoping to avoid that
wait just a question. you said 8 hours.those stats don't update for 24 hours. So you got 16 more hours to go till you know if the issue is fixed. that is why there are no stats at all on your screenshot. It just says battery data isn't available right now
Edit: ok I was wrong about that because I factory reset my phone (on the advise of Google support) and it's been 7 hours and I can see stats. But yes not losing anything In 8 hours is suspicious. I mean it could happen I guess my pixel 4xl got fantastic battery life and apparently mine was the only 4xl that got good battery life because everyone else hated the 4xl because of battery life. Anyway with my 4xl I would lose 1 or 2 percent overnight same with my 1,2,3a and 5. It's only the 6 that this is happening too. I just hope that it can be fixed with an software update.
8 hours with no drain is suspicious if you are not in Airplane mode. The clock, the weather app, email client, a bunch of things at least asks back for update preiodically, so it seems odd.

He's pushing this OS all over the place, not sure why. Most people do not want to bl unlock, wipe their devices and gamble with a new OS that probably doesn't work with Google Pay. And I agree 8 hours with no drain? Not likely although I did have 0.4% / hour one night. Usual is around 0.8 - 1.0 / hour.

Calyx doesn't do anything really in the background. It's de-Googled and has background processes limited or killed altogether. It is certainly possible to get this low idle drain considering OP is on wifi with what looks to be a very strong mobile network signal so the inefficient Exynos modem isn't draining it.
The downside of course is that a bunch of stuff doesn't work right on Calyx because there are no Play Services. You can't even access the stuff you bought IAP for...
I see. I don't say that it is bad. limiting or killing processes in deep sleep would hurt the notifications too, right? It is an interesting OS, but I would join to the others. I need my apps in a convenient way. I did modding in the past but now I appreciate phones that just work when I take them out from the box.

Where am I pushing anything? I'm sorry that I'm excited I've managed to solve a problem and want to share it with others where it could help. But hey, you're welcome to keep scrolling if my posts bother you that much.
For anyone else who might be interested, I took my phone off charge this morning and have been using it for the last 5 hours receiving Whatsapp messages, emails, calendar notifications, Doorbell/CCTV notifications and doing light internet browsing and I've lost 2% battery so far.

You might have "solved" one problem but introduced countless others. If you're really that excited then give all the info not just overnight battery drain and be a little more forthcoming about the rom. I mean in reality if I turn off all network activity and put it into airplane mode I'd get the same results and probably even better. And then there's your thread of ...Why isn't everyone running CalyxOS? Maybe one thread would have been enough instead of cross posting the Pro and the P6. Anyway, I do believe you have gotten enough feedback so people know the pitfalls of the rom and the supposed benefits of longer battery life.

I turned nothing off. If I had I would have said so. What's the point in posting my findings then? I would be useless wouldn't it? I don't have time to play games and lead people around the bush. I'm not 12 years old anymore.
So just to satisfy your curiosity, I use my phone in exactly the same way I have always used it. Bluetooth off, Wifi and mobile data on, location on when I need it but off at the moment. All my apps work just the same as before including my banking app. The only thing I don't use now is Google Pay, and two of my apps with in app purchases are not registered. Apart from that it is exactly how it was before.

Mobile network standby of 2 minutes with 5 hours off the charger suggests airplane mode was in use.
I don't care how much stuff you turn off in the background, there is no way you're getting a 2% loss from 5 hours of usage unless you used the phone for less than 30 minutes in those 5 hours.

Ok crack on buddy. Lol
Suspicious, yes, but then again... I used to be able to run my old Moto G3 for two weeks on a single charge with just a bare-bones LOS, no gapps and nothing else in the background, so it doesn't seem THAT unreasonable.
