Custom Rom for the elderly - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I'm looking for a custom rom / app solution for my mother in-law (who is becoming more senile)
It would require the following function
- Limited outbound calls to a set of restricted numbers
- GPS tracking
- Removal of all unnecessary apps
- Removal of e-mail / Facebook / browser functions
Any suggestions ?

I dont really know if there such a rom, but give a try this app, https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=name.kunes.android.launcher.activity , its called BIG LAUNCHER, and helps a lot to the elderly .
Alez.

I'm taking care of my 82 yr old grandpa and also looking into ways to get technology into it to make it easier.I urge all developers to give this some thought and make some stuff now when you have the ability and make some stuff for yourself 10,20,or 50 years down the road .
I am thinking something like Siri or cortana (goodmorning Bill here is your paper, its cold outside so put on some pants if you plan on going out.)
My grandpa has Cochlear implant. (Just putting that out there)

I believe a smart watch would be ideal place to start.I know Pap(grandpa) and many other elderly would forget their device if it wasnt strapped to them.

I will warm up my earlier advice. Further you find special settings for people with eye/ear-handicap.

Gizmodo Review

I agree that we are Masochists. Haha.
However, take that review with a grain of salt. It is a review on an Apple Fan Site.
holy balls, and comments won't show until approved by the author. At least it crashed his macbook.
This reviewer must be high. This is my 5th Android device and it is the best one so far. I am an AOKP or AOSP guy, but LG has little features that I find extremely useful.
LG is good with copying, like how they copied the Picture in Picture camera before Samsung released it, or how they copied the floating apps which Samsung dont even use.
Anyways, you cant win a review by everyone, there will always be biased people out there ^^
Btw, does the buttons on the side go white even if you have it set to black in full screen? Or is he just that hateful?
EDIT: Nope, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gHqzTxPnPD0 check around 1:10 when he plays Dead Trigger, stays black.
The guy is a hack. I'm not even convinced he used the device for more than five minutes.
He claims that it has "even more useless features than Touchwiz", which isn't even close to being true. And he's apparently too stupid to figure out how to use KnockOn, because I have no issues with it.
His entire rant (I refuse to call it a review) is centered around LG's interface. To be honest, I just don't think he's smart enough to use it because I have no problems with it and actually appreciate some of the features it adds.
One that I really appreciate is the ability to send a video as an MMS (without recording it as one). Record video => Share to messaging => Prompt asks you if you want to trim it because it's too large => Say "okay", then, rather than trim it, just click "done". I twill compress the video to 3gp quality and send. Yes, it's pixelated, but at least you can send it. Most android phones simply tell you that it's too big and refuse to let you send.
LG is the ONLY manufacturer besides Apple who lets you do this currently. It's a small thing, but it makes me happy and I wouldn't give it up.
Its almost hilarious the bias of the comments that are getting approved as well. Clearly he has a bone to pick.
Thanks guys like I said there's too much to like on this phone and some features like the volume and display on the notification bar suck but otherwise this phone is a beast and its the perfect size.
The gizmodo clown was probably in the middle of doing one of those ridiculous alcohol articles that they do every week!
I come from Nexus devices, and that dude is a straight retard. The phone is unusable with this interface? Stick to iPhones , it seems that's all your simple mind can handle.

That wake up alarm is one for the Disney crowd or serial killers.......
I could see his point of view in the review.
I looked at the phone and yes, the first thing I do on any phone is install Swiftkey.
I also spend hours and hours getting everything right on the phone and strip away all the stuff that is setup for morons.
I never use the factory email programs and always use Touchdown for work and K9 for home email.
I use WeatherBug Elite for weather widgets and a bunch of other stuff.
I think the phone could be usable, but you will need to spend some time.
If you are looking for a clean out of the box experience, I'd have to agree with Gizmodo, look somewhere else.
On the other hand, if you want a screaming piece of hardware, look no further.
Interesting that my default alarm has no singing whatsoever. Its just music. I changed it to something louder.

It literally takes 5 minutes to set the phone up and get rid of the features you don't want. I have none of the notification bar issues because I stripped them down. Install the Google keyboard and whatever widgets you want. If you are suggesting that the phone isn't usable out of the box, I'm going to question your choice in user names.

No time for praise. They're too busy conducting a demonic ritual to resurrect him from the grave.
And yeah .. that reviewer is an idiot. My kindergartener could write a more intelligent an unbiased review.
I surely wouldn't recommend not buying this phone to anyone. But.. Nothing he said is that far off. This device is not far from being a masterpiece, but the software does suck. Some of the things he said such as the navigation bar can be changed in the settings, so I'm not completely sure what he's talking about. I also thought the keyboard was junk and their version of Swype was even worse. He didn't even get into the throttling portion, or how the issues with the camera and some shots it floods out in lighter conditions.
I mean you may love the device, I did. But there are many nuances in the software, like the folders opening into little squares that the app titles take up 2 lines. I'm surprised he didn't mention that...
It's a good thing Loki works and we can put vanilla android on it soon, because it really will be an epic device at that point.

I don't have an issue. I modify every device I get. My first operation out of the box is unlock or root. Then I start the process. I was talking about those that do not want to setup a home screen, etc. Remember most people that had VCRs had them flashing 12:00 from the time they got them until the thing died.

Wear Expenses Tracker

Hi everyone
I've just published an app for Android Wear and would like to hear your thoughts on it.
It's called "Wear Expenses Tracker". The concept is very simple - record all your expenses using android watch. Tracking my expenses is something I always wanted to do, but taking out my phone every time I buy something is a little bit too high effort, so that habit never developed. Trying to solve this problem for myself and hopefully other people would find it useful as well.
Unfortunately I am unable to post links since I am new to this forum, but I advise searching for "Wear Finance" on the Play Store to find it (my app hits first result normally).
What do you think of the concept and usecase? Any tips on UX/UI? I am also planning to implement categories (labels), import/export and other functionality. Which are the most crucial features do you think app is missing?
Looking forward to hearing from you

I would use it mainly when I am on vacation, just came back from a weeks vacation.
It be nice to have a running count on how much the vacation is costing me.
Day to day expenses not sure but you know it maybe nice to see how much I am spending say for coffee each day.
Idea have the ability to do more than one expense list,
Click on a button "Lists",
Vacation
Coffee
Work
Home Renovation
Just an idea....
Looks nice. :good:
I am admittedly awful when it comes to my finances (ask my wife). This apps seems like a great idea.:good:
Just wanted to let you know that I released an update with fresh design and ability to set a monthly budget! Let me know what you think

The most important features to me in an expense tracker are:
Categories - and ability to view how much has been spent in each category compared to eachother (i.e. in a pie chart) and to do this by month, year, and all-time.
Compare total amount spent between different months
A nice feature but not necessary would be to compare how much was spent on a certain category between months. i.e. for the category "Food" how much was spent in July vs June vs May etc. Visualisation with a graph would be a nice touch.

[Q] Clockface development - clock states

Hi,
I am the developer of Ultimate Info Watchface for Gear 2.
I am trying to port my Gear 2 watchfaces to Gear S. With some design issues, finally I have a working copy on my Gear S.
But unfortunately (!) , on Gear S, there is a clockface state. According to the design guide, it can either be;
- active state clock
or
- always-on state clock
As my Gear 2 watchfaces don't have this state, when the watch wakes up from blank screen, it shows a simple digital watch instead of my fancy watchface. I couldn't find any information on how to make my watchface always-on. (or creating a always-on state version of my watchface)
Where can I find this information ? Any ideas ?
anybody ?

I've been struggling with this as well. If you find the answer, please be sure to share it here.
Also, are there any custom Tizen events around watch faces? Is there a way to know if the watch has just woken up and started redisplaying the watch face? It's been a long time since I've come across documentation so poor for a platform.
@OpenMind_NL this is the designer who stole your hands!

And I am the developer of the Formula Gear watch widget for Tizen.
I demand that you take your Ultimate Info Watch Square Watchface offline, since you're using the dial and the hands of my Formula Gear design without the necessary permission.
Because you ask money for a product with my design in it, and without my permission, you are legally commiting theft.
I'm not used to discus these matters or warn more than once. Without the proper response (taking offline) I leave my copyright matters to my lawyer, in which the stake will be that you are obliged to pay the attorney fees and pay me for the design on behalf of a to be determined charity.
---------- Post added at 11:45 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:27 PM ----------
I checked my private messages and discovered that you asked me for permission to use the Ingersoll design.
I responded that I can only give permission to use my work if I pay Ingersoll for their design because it is not mine.
And now you think you can steal my design because it is not branded??
There's still a lot of work in it (many hours), so you really need to pay if you want to earn money with work that was done by other people!
@OpenMind_NL ,
I don't know what you're talking about. But you should stop this. This thread is not about your childish whinnings.

LOL... I didn't even read further sicko.
I have all the proof that the design is mine... it's al in pre-publication stored original dated photoshop files for each and every element in my designs. That's all my lawyer ever needed to get my unauthorized designs out of the market.
I never asked you to pay me. I only told you that you'll have to pay if you want to use MY designs for payed products.
Using my designs in free products is no problem at all, as long as you mention what I did.
Untill now I only warned you and told you that you'll have to pay when you don't take your payed product offline.

If you got this design from another peron that stole it from my widget, than it is not your fault... But now you know it, you are guilty when you don't remove it.
The design is not generic... You wont find a second one in the world with the same type of markings, fonts and background. The same goes for the hands. All my own designs... created from scratch in Photoshop.

Model DT185-ACA-720
Baseband Version 1.5rc5
Kernel Version 3.0.8+
Android version 4.1.1
I'm looking for the same thing, I dumpster dive and I found this same awesome touchscreen display running Android. I haven't had any luck installing any apps, and the only thing I can do is go through the very limited setting menu. Any help would be awesome
Have you guys had any luck with this? The unit doesn't even recognize apk files, much less give me the option to install them.
It looks like some other people have found Amiibo kiosks and want to hack them. I've got one too. The information posted in the OP is what I know so far. It would be cool to be able to install some other apps or even get a custom version of Android running on these things. I'm sure other people are looking for information on them. Since the Nintendo Switch was released, these things are in the wild either through dumpster diving or knowing people at the retail stores. They could make for a very cool game room project if someone can provide a little information on the http://www.ducotech.com/ displays.
The only thing I was actually able to do was make it play movies. But for some reason it restarts after a few minutes, as if it has an auto restart set to a specific time.
How were you able to make it do that? I can't even get it to do that.

So it seems as if, for full functionality, we need the security dongle. I wonder if this can be bypassed in any way.

Good luck finding one, you would need to find someone who works for the company that provides the displays. And I'm sure it wouldn't be cheap either. It's like selling someone's codes for their bank account. If a security dongle got out and was duplicated, that could be harmful for their business.
I found some workarounds and posted them here here:

Hi Dears,
İ can't find any aplication and any settings on my watch about sedentery alert.
İ looked for phone aplications too but had no chance about it.
Also i need water reminder too.
Are there any apps or setting for them.
Thanks.
Verge has the sedentary alert, it does not have a way to disable it tho.
As for the water reminder, "Wear Hydrate Me" works somehow (you must extract the wear apk from "raw" folder" and install on phone. It is a bit hard to find the app as it was discontinued, but you may want to give it a try...

I saw in one Chinese manufacturer watch this reminder of water. You can set in app how often it must remind you about drinking of water. I think the same and much more you can do with any or most apps for Android (I don't have apple's devices, so... sorry, I can't write about apps for iOS platform). First reviews/articles which I found about these apps is - https://www.androidauthority.com/best-water-reminder-apps-android-916324/. Also I understand how is important to drink water and to get remind about it for you, but if say honest I drinking water when I want, but not that moment when reminding me device, for example: watch. But maybe it's just me so weird doing
P.S. To get up and to move is important, sometime time running so fast and you don't see that hours already ran out, but water... then maybe need reminders for sleep, eat, go to toilet and ect? I don't understand that, how can device to say me when I want to drink water, when I have to eat and others things
Yes, yes, yes there are a lot of recommendations of health representatives, but first at all this is just recommendations, sometime impossible to do how they saying, second if i like to watch sports which matches often is later than health representatives recommend me to go to sleep, what to do? To skip all the time yours favorite sports matches or to sleep than saying health representatives? Then maybe let's got to uninhabited island there is no any humans, devices and others reasons to be unhealthy. Rules is for break it

I agree with you in a lot of point. You're right . But that is a smartwatch, unfortunately, It hasn't a lot of functions. So, in this case, the smartwatch must do something for me. Sedentary alert and water alerts are not fatal but it is necessary for me.
