If I backup using titanium and select system and user apps will it back root up as well so if I hit a problem and have to restore will i still be rooted or will I have to start root and recovery etc again
You will have to root again. Without root, TiBU won't even start.
OK thanks

Is there any good backup software that will create like an image of the phone as is, software installed, ringtones used etc that can be used if you ever have to hard reset your phone ??
I use MyBackup Pro (get it from ppcware*) - it can backup your apps, phone settings (including APN's) and so on...

nandroid backup will restore full status every application u want or not
can't individual backup
u may don't want backup everyday with 250-300 mb mybackup pro & titanium are just fine working
I'm curious about this. Maybe someone can enlighten me.
Lets say that I'm on stock 2.2, rooted. I do a nandroid backup. Then I allow the upgrade for 2.2.2. Of course I lose root.
Will a nandroid restore, restore root, or will I have to root again?
A full nandroid restore will restore everything - the system and data - and you will be right back where you were, on 2.2 and rooted.

Ahh, okay.
So to confirm that I understand you correctly...
...the 2.2.2 update won't hold after the nandroid restore? I'll be back to 2.2, as it was before the (2.2.2) update?
If you just wanna backup and restore your apps, use Titanium Backup (it's free on the Market).
Nandroid backs up your entire phone. When you restore a nandroid backup your phone will be exactly like it was when you made the backup. Restoring a nandroid backup is used to recover from a crash or to revert to a previous ROM.
After a ROM change I will set up my accounts, root if needed and do any other basic setup stuff and then, before installing any apps, do a nandroid backup. I can then go back to a "fresh install" if I want to. I also do a nandroid each weekly to capture the state of my phone.
Backing up apps and restoring them across different ROMs may or may not work for you. When I have tried this with Titanium Backup I had many force closes and ended up reinstalling everything from the market. Others have had success. I have read the MyBackup pro does better, but most suggest that you just backup and restore data not the app itself.
I have not tried backing up my apps to Google, which you can do in later versions of Android. Go to Privacy in the setting menu and then to Backup and restore. There are boxes for data backup and automatic restore you can check. maybe someone who has used this can comment on how well it works.
If your nandroid backups hang up at "backing up firstboot" get the latest version of StreakMod Recovery.

After installing a fresh ROM and rooting my device, the first thing I do is install Busybox. Then, with Titanium Backup I do Restore Apps Only, then reboot my device. I never get any FC's with this restore process.
Thanks!
Thank you everyone. I appreciate the info.
I've used Titanium BU, and have busybox installed too.
It was just a matter of if after an update (OTA), and restore with Nandroid, would root still be in place.
I totally understand what you guys are saying now.
I've also been using MyBackup to see how it compares to Titanium. So far so good.

I prefer mybackup root to titanium. It's far more user friendly and more automated (in the free version). As for nandroids, I always take a backup before doing any system changes (hacks or rom updates) so I can roll back to a known good system if needs be.
BTW - it is a good idea to copy your ROM backups to another device, just in case your SD card dies. I copy mine to one of my desktop computers and to a USB drive. I usually back up my entire SD card, except my music folders, every couple of weeks.
Where does Nandroid put the backups so I can rename them and save off phone?
mine (from Streakmod recovery) are in /sdcard/rom_backup
StreakMod recovery puts the backups on the SD Card in a folder named rom_backup.
Each backup is in a sub-folder of it's own and uses a date-time format for the folder name. I rename the folders with a meaningful name by just pre-pending to the name. So my last backup is named BB351-2011-06-18-02.41.04. The following files are created:
.android_secure.img
boot.img
cache.img
data.img
firstboot.img
recovery.img
system.img
nandroid.md5
the md5 file is a text file that contains the md5 sums for the other files. This file is used to verify the other files when they are restored.
i forgot to perma temp root and backup all of my apks and apk data. My question is, what is the best way to restore my stock backup and backup my apks and data? or is this possible?
Unless you made a nandroid of your previous ROM you can't go back. If you had "Backup My Settings" checked in Settings>Privacy, your apps usually restore automatically, but not the data. I've always used TitaniumBackup to backup and restore my apps and data, but there are other apps out there.

This makes no sense.
If you are S-OFF, all you have to do is flash the superuser app after you restore your stock backup to get root back.
That's what I was getting at if I have root I can back up all my stock app data

Hi guys,
So i had been putting off rooting and tweaking and such for a while now... as i couldnt really be bothered with all the backup/restore/doubt/failure and such. Yesterday i had finally had enough with vlingo activating itself when i press the home button only once.
So i flashed a rooted kernel (KF4 - using CF Root guide with ODIN), now i have done a couple of backups using the CWM Manager and i have backed up all my apps using Titanium BackUp (i also froze vlingo).
Now... my question is - the Telstra ICS update is apparently on the way, and i have read that i will likely have to update through Kies (rather than OTA).. will the ICS update through Kies erase all the data on my phone (apps, app data, contacts, sms, email, calendar)?
If so... how are the Titanium Backups and CWM backups preserved?
Thanks for any help.
Installs through kies shouldn't delete anything, however i would still back up contacts/sms/calender with mybackup root.
Titanium backup and cwm backups aren't touched at all since they're on the internal sdcard.
awesome, thanks heaps for the reply peachpuff.
In the event some data was lost during the update... the procedure would be...
1. Backup all data (apps and personal data) using Titanium and/or MyBackup.
2. Update to ICS using Kies.
3. Re-root matching updated ICS kernel with new root kernel.
4. Re-install Titanium and MyBackup.
5. Restore apps and user data from Titanium and MyBackup.
Thanks again.
So tonight I got tired of having issues with the Browser and general performance and I have been reading that a lot of people have seen better performance by performing a factory reset. The only problem is that currently unless you are unlocked you can't root (unless I am wrong). I was able to successfully root my tablet using the ASUS AppBackup application.
Before I performed a factory reset I used titanium backup to backup my apps and also used App Backup to backup the critical apps that I really needed restored in case a root method is not discovered soon. During the backup for the heck of it I decided to backup the Superuser app and OTA Rootkeeper application and app data (Note, I had full root access after upgrading to JB by using OTA Root Keeper).
After the backup completed, I backed up the backup file to my desktop and performed a factory reset. Once I went through the initial setup I decided to test if I could restore Superuser and OTA Rootkeeper and to my surprise I was able to (it took about 15 minutes to restore just those two programs & files) restore both applications and root along with it.
I have attached screen shots of OTA Rootkeeper and Titanium Backup both showing that my device is rooted.
Now I am wondering if I just got lucky or can we use this exploit to root the device. So I am looking to see if anybody is willing to try this and also if you are on JB without root, I wonder if somebody is willing to try to restore a backup that i have taken of both applications.
**I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE TO YOUR DAMAGED TABLET**
This does not belong in the Dev forum...
And to explain your situation, a factory reset only wipes data (the /data partition)... the su binary is in the /system partition so you won't lose root... you could simply install the Superuser app from the Play Store and you would have root...
