[Q] Android releases updating default APN - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

When do Android releases include the updated default APN settings that is on apns-full-conf.xml ?
ie Does the latest Android 4.4.4 include the latest apns-full-conf.xml ? If not, in which release would this likely to be included? 5.0? 4.5?

[Q] Android gmail application

Hi,
I am looking for information on how to get the Gmail apk freely available without using Android market.
I have two custom android devices with no access to market - one running Android 2.1 and another running Android 4.1.
I would like to get 2 versions of the Gmail.apk -
1. Older one which is compatible with Android 2.1
2. Latest one
I am using my own build made from the AOSP code on these devices - android market is disabled in the build.
Also what is the procedure/licencing for packaging the Gmail.apk as part of your own build from the Android AOSP code ?
Thanks.

JBED Emulator (New Developer?)

Can somebody make a new version of JBED Emulator? At least compatible with Android 4.4 KitKat? Coz I'm currently using CM 11 and the developer isn't updating things up for this latest Android versions...

Downgrading System Apps

Hi,
I'm wondering if it's possible to downgrade a system app to an earlier version than the one that came with the phone/rom. I prefer the older version of Chrome with merged tabs and apps but the earliest version I can get (by uninstalling updates) on my current rom is from after that feature was removed. I tried replacing chrome.apk but it didn't seem to work.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

how to upgrade the webview on my 5.1 phone?

Hi,
I am developing a hybrid app and would like some of the features of the newer version of webview. I check on the phone (Settings/Apps/All -> Android System WebView) and the stock version is version 39. I also note that the 'FORCE STOP' and 'DISABLE' buttons are inactive.
I installed the new version manually from the Google Play Store, and that is version 58.
If I list the packages using adb, I see that the old webview is com.android.webview while the newer one is com.google.android.webview.
So, now I have both versions installed, but I see from WebSettings.getUserAgentString() that my app is still using version 39.
Is there a way I can get my app to use the new webview?
Regards,
Max.
BTW, phone is vkworld f1 and not rooted.

To update Gapps or not?

Hey peps, I'm using a Nexus 5 running the custom rom "Resurrection Remix Oreo v6.2.1-20181209 by*@Hannibal226", running Android 8.1 Oreo (Rooted, X-Posed and Magisk Manager, etc, etc).
I have this open gapps package installed "open_gapps-arm-8.1-pico-20181229.zip" but I see that there is a new updated version dated "14 April 2019" from here...
https://opengapps.org/
Should I update? I noticed that when I switched to this ROM my caller ID stopped working. All I get is a phone number when someone calls me unless they are in my contacts then it will show who is calling.
I was hoping that if the phone dialer in the updated pico package version might have been updated?
So should I update (flash with TWRP)? Is there a way to see what has been updated or changed?
Or does anyone know how to make my caller ID work?
Thanks for your time and TIA.
