Deleted pics re-appearing!? - Xperia Z2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I seem to have an odd problem. I have a lot of photos on my sd card, passed down from many phones. I spent ages going through them, deleting quite a lot. The deleted ones had gone from my viewer. Later when I looked, they were all restored. I have tried it a few times now and cannot permanently delete any pictures, they just keep coming back. I have always had auto backup disabled. It was funny at first. . . ?

Same here i thought i got faulty micro sd(sandisk 64gb) one deleted some videos couple of times but it always comes back.

Good to know I'm not alone in this. We can pretty much rule out a dodgy sd card, yesterday it happened with my 16gb, I had just transferred the picture files to a new Kingston 64gb and still the same problem.

I have a similar problem happening too. I keep having a gig of thumbnails reappearing and can only get rid of them using SD Maid Pro's system cleaner. Super annoying.

Did you use the inbuilt photo album to delete? This is a bit tricky in kitkat due to Google's policy to disable write access to the SD card. You can goggle it to find out more.

No I used SD Maid and I run a 4.3 ROM I've suspected that it is Google syncing some how but I have disabled all relevant features.

Yep, I'm using the standard photo viewer, do you know of a decent alternative app as a viewer? I'm not keen on the confusing layout of the Album app.

I thought it must be a sync issue but I have it switched off too, I also have box and drive disabled. I don't like the idea of my photos being on the cloud, and I want to decide which ones to keep and which to delete!

I have the same problem with my scandisk 64gb Ultra high speed card. I pull out my card from phone attach card to my laptop with card reader. Copy all my data on laptop and then format my card. Copy all my stuff on card insert into z2 and every thing is fine. Now onward I don't have any problem.

I think you need to clean the ".thumbnail" file inside the MMC and the Phone storage, and you can try to use App Manager try to clear album data...

Wow it can be dangerous when someone had adult content which apeared again in wrong time and wrong place

I have a similar problem,
My problem though is that there's a album called"photos" which I have deleted about 60 times now, but when I reboot the phone, the album is back. There's no map or album on my SD Card thats called that.
Annoying and i want to get rid of it.

Just use the built in Gallery called Album to delete photos. Had this problem with quickpic. But changing some system files will alleviate the problem. I'm now using quickpic without problems.

It's not a problem or a bug, it's only something that people doesn't know.
For some reason SONY made our Z2 software so only the built-in file manager and preinstalled apps can delete file on sd-card, so if you delete photo with gallery it will work, if you delete that photo with built-in file explorer (FK File Commander) it will work, BUT if you do the same thing with other file explorer or other apps like ES File Explorer or other apps, that apps simply can't delete sd-card content for real, they do it only apparently....

Partially correct. Only system apps can do it. But there's a workaround if you're rooted.

I'm sorry, but It is a bug, I have all sync turned off, no Google+, no Dropbox, no playstation memories or any other cloud backup enabled but still the pics keep reappearing. I am going to copy what I need to keep to the pc, format my 64gb card and cot my info back, although I tried this earlier and it didn't solve the problem
Sent from my D6503 using XDA Free mobile app

This is not a Sony bug. As mentioned earlier, it is a function of Kit Kat (4.x) Roms.
Use the built in Album app to organise/delete photos.
If you want to use Quicpic, or other apps, you need to be rooted and edit a system file, which is easily done. There's actually an app you can download in the Play store which will do this for you, "SDFix: KitKat Writable MicroSD" by NextApp Inc. You will need to be rooted, though.

gallery problems question

i just rooted (but not any special ROM)and everything worked perfectly until a couple of hours ago when gallery showed no images/folders. i restored it to a backup with titanium backup which then showed my folders but when i clicked on them, they disappeared. i used a file manager to make sure they are there, and it shows that there are images there. has anyone seen this? is there a way to fix it? or am i boned?
I would just use quickpic from the market. Its free and way better than the stock gallery. Hope this helps.

What did you restore with Titanium Backup? Wouldn't the Gallery app be exactly the same as what you have on your phone? I would try Clear Data from Manage Applications. Also, where are your items stored? If on external SD, I would try to get my hands on another SDcard to see it that's not the problem. Very rarely, I get something like what you are saying, but usually unmounting and remounting the SDcard fixes it. Maybe try fixing permissions with ROM Manager or in ClockworkMod?
well i tried just restoring the data with TB and then i also did app and data an got the same results, i tried mounting and un mounting but that didnt work either. ill try another sd card

Duplicate folders in gallery

Hi all,
I've been using my Galaxy S2 for a few weeks, and finally decided my 16gb SD card was not quite big enough. I bought a 32gb card and used my PC to transfer everything from the small card to the large one. Then, I placed the new card in my phone and booted up.
Everything seemed ok, but then I noticed that I now have two of every media folder in my gallery app.
My first thought was that the folders and pictures must have gotten deplicated in the transfer process, but I checked with root explorer, and there is only one of each folder on the card.
Anyone have any idea what might be causing this?
Thanks,
-Matt

Hey Matt
I think the reason your seeing duplicates of everything is because with android they store everything on the pre-installed sd card you can try to delete the old ones but make sure you make a backup before you do anything.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA App
don't delete anything.
Go to the media storage application under manage applications (in settings) and clear the cache for that app. You may need to reboot. then check the gallery to see if the duplicates are still there.
This happened to me a while back.
That was one of the first things I tried, but the clear cache button is greyed out. Should I try clearing the data from that app?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using xda premium
yes, clear data. that should work. that's actually what i meant before.
Hope it works.

[Q] "Media" app draining my battery?

Hi all, thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
I've been going between 2 ROMs recently (Tron 2.1 and PAC-Man 23.0). For both of them, it is showing that the "Media" app is using a larger percentage of my battery (around 18%). I'm just not sure what this app is, or how to disable or remove it.
When I click on the app from the Battery details, "Force Stop" and "Report" are disabled buttons. Down below, it shows the included packages being "Downloads", "Media Storage", "Download Manager", "DRM Protected Content". I haven't been downloading anything, nor adding songs or movies, so I'm not sure what this "app" is spending its cycles doing.
Thanks!
I guess that it would be a better idea to report this incident to the ROM developer..
I have the same problem sometimes. After a google search I found that basically, your phone is searching for all the media on your internal and external storage. What causes the wake lock is that it is searching for or has found a file that is corrupt. It basically gets stuck on that file for awhile.
I had the wake lock for a couple days then it just went away.

That is really interesting! Using a previous ROM, I do have a few corrupted images from a camera-app-gone-haywire. I'll have to clean those out (which I should have done anyway), and see if that helps.
Great idea!
No problem! I should go through and clean my SD card out, but I am too lazy and don't have the time to spend on it. I just deal with it because I usually have a charger nearby most of the time.

Check to make sure the .thumbnails folder in the DCIM folder isnt overloaded with 2GB of images. Dont use the stock camera app regardless what ROM you are on. It accesses the stock Gallery app which in turns eventually creates thousands and thousands of "thumbnail" images. More like small pics at about 400x300 resolution. It JAMS up android.process.media .. hell.. it would make my phone hot because sometimes it ran straight for 24 minutes killing cpu.. deleted all the files in there and stopped using the stock app, no more problem.

So what do we do when we have been using the stock gallery and camera app? Can I delete the .thumbnails folder? What kind of camera and gallery app do you recommend? I have both stock samsung and stock android camera that I use everyday...
I have been using my phone (unrooted stock) for quite some time now and only recently did the media act up on me and killing the battery. I have rooted and install custom rom and reformatted my sdcard.
It'll now i kinda check the battery more frequently.

Just following up (I asked the original question). What I've found is that between various ROMs, I have two images folders on my sdcard. Mostly, I just went through and deleted a few invalid images (I think my Tron 2.0 ROM used to take corrupt images, but no longer). I cleaned out many many images I no longer needed as well.
Also, not sure if this is related: I uninstalled and reinstalled Google+ (which has an image auto-backup feature). I had been restoring it from a backup, and I think it got corrupted along the way. It was no longer automatically backing up images, for example.
Since then, I've been in much better shape, and I haven't noticed the Media process taking as much battery.

[Q] Sd Card Issues

Hey guys I've noticed an issue with the phone reading slash showing duplicates I'd certain files...namely music, mp3's. I use Dropbox for most of my file storage, this my music files are stored there. I used the Dropbox app to download about 10 mp3's by "export(ing) to external sd." Once I went into the stock music app (yeah I use stock lol) it showed exactly two of each of the files I added. Nowhere on my external sd are they duplicated, only one of each, I also searched the internal sd and didn't find any of said files there.... Finally, once I used stock file manager app to delete the music files giving me the issue, upon going back into stock music app-the app was still showing (only one now) the files I deleted, but it was unable to play them. I cleared the music apps cache and storage then restarted the phone which removed all traces of the deleted files and duplicates. My question is this: is this Dropbox app related? Anyone else have this issue or can recreate it? Is there maybe a known bug/fix I've missed in the forums somehow? Lastly, some additional information...if I transfer from my computer it doesn't do the duplicate file garbage....odd. I haven't tried using the stock file manager app's "online" access method to download files from Dropbox so I dunno if that does it too or not...
Thanks in advance for any help and or insight offered!
Unrelated topic: One more quick question: I'm aiming to find a way to make holding the vol buttons skips to next song but due to my noobness I'm unsure as to whether this is a tweak or mod? I'm using the mobile xda app from work now so I can't search the forums at the moment, is this covered in our forums that I've missed? If not, I'd eventually like to start a walk through thread for it... Thanks again guys.

- That's the media_scanner running wild. You may have a corrupt file on your SDcard or internal memory.
- Sony ROMs have never had a "Close All" button, so that's not a bug.

I didn't get the previous update so I went from 4.3 to 4.4 straight to the 757 build.
A problem I have on 757 is that it when I use the wireless headset which is supplied and it's connected and press play it just plays in speakermode and have to enable disable bluetooth and/or throw to connect again but it's irritating.
Another problem I found is that the Google Speech (extra button on your keyboard) doesn't appear to be working anymore, it doesn't pick up anything at all.
After the update my 32gb Micro-SD seems to be read-only, I can't copy/paste anything there while in Windows I can (so it's not the micro-sd card), I did a format of the whole SD card anyway, tried it with fat32, ntfs, exfat but all the same, anyone else got issue's with that?
I do like that you can enable 16 toggles and they have extra functionality like on Samsung, when you keep pressing WIFI you can enter the wifi settings from there. And swiping 2 fingers down from the top menu bar makes you go straight to the quicksettings.
I wish the keyboard had this option to separate words though, the spacebar is too small, so you just keep putting ... between the words instead of zero's, Samsung's keyboard is a bit smarter to identify the right words (even glued together) and spaces.
Overall it's faster then 4.2 and 4.3 and a big improvement over the battery (but it needs like 1 or 2 complete battery cycles to fully use that.

My best guess was that your sd card is corrupt. Try to format it with your PC and start clean. That should fix it.
Some battery drain occured with me yesterday (about a day after updating to 757). It was draining like hell, like 20% after only 9 hours since unplugged and about 3 hour of screen time. but nothing crazy on the battery usage graph. So i was suspicious about hidden wakelock somewhere inside. So like a dumb boy, i just opened up one by one of the installed apps. So it was found that somehow Waze and Line app will FC on open. I decided to erase data on Waze and uninstall Line and voila no more battery drain after the next charge! Turns out that i have restored both with Helium and never tested them after restoration.
Moral of the story is, don't do a sloppy restore and backup after clean install. Better for you to find app with cloud save or at least local backup support and clean install the app and then restore the data by per app.

No the SD card isn't corrupt. Google did this in the Kit Kat update. SD cards cannot be written into by third party apps. Only sony apps can write into it like "File Commander". This is to improve security as they said, but it's proving to be more of a problem than a security enhancement -_-

That's not a bug. It's a "feature" in KitKat, and it's entirely Google's idea. You can no longer move, copy or delete your own files on SD cards. A new SD card permission is in place, so apps (Facebook, Spotify, games etc.) can save files to it, but you can't manually do it unless you root and run SDFix (you can uninstall it after you're done), or you'll have to use the File Commander app, or whatever it's called, which came with the update.

I guess you'll have to manually check every file on there. It could be as simple as a corrupt photo, so move everything from your SD to your computer and move one and one file (or folder if you're certain that it doesn't contain a corrupt file) at a time.
You have any idea why mine isn't fixed? I'm on 757 too.
FYI: my update crashed with a "software failed to update" and I had to perform wipes using the SUS.

Go to Settings -> Wifi -> Advanced -> Uncheck "Scanning always Available"
Plus, if you rely on High Accuracy mode and using it for Waze/Maps/Any other Geotag enabled apps, don't you ever turn off Location after exiting the app. Just leave the Location on. It won't wakelock your device for GPS signal. Otherwise the app will show you that it eats battery in battery usage because it awaits for the GPS to be turned on and the only Solution is to restart the phone.
