Smartconnect not so smart? - Xperia Z2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was hoping to be able to disable the wifi when in my office and enable it when on the tube / at home, but it would seem I can't set a wifi network as a device or event in this app.
Any thoughts?

I think smart connect connects to Wi-Fi you've stop once it is in range and disconnects when out of range. What you'd need to do is turn it off and have a button to toggle Wi-Fi on/off when at work.

Well it helps, so thanks, but it's not what I want - nor what smart connect should be about.

Smart Action App - Post Em Here

Ok so I think the Smart Action app is pretty cool so let's post our Triggers & Actions here
One of mine here:

Thanks for the idea going by WiFi (or Bluetooth) connection. I was using local, which isn't too accurate.
using it to turn off GPS and mobile data at home and at work now.
Will use it to turn off WiFi and turn on mobile data when connecting to the car's bluetooth to listen to some MotoCast music streamed from my home server.

I'm waiting for my RAZR to arrive, but I use Tasker on my current phone and these are some of my settings... not sure if they will translate to Smart Actions or not yet.
turn on GPS when Google Maps or Navigation is on - turn off when closed
will have it turn from 3g to 4g when surfing the net (hopefully)
launch pandora when blutooth headset is connected
turn off wifi when connected to car blutooth - turn on wifi and turn off bt when disconnected from car (plus some brightness and volume settings)
Auto respond to texts while I'm connected to car bt that I'll respond later
And as was mentioned when I'm at work I have it turn off syncing and data when connected to wifi at work.
Ok, so had a bit of a read and play with Smart Actions. A few ommisions or design choices that to me, make a few basic things difficult to accomplish..
1) When at home switch WiFi on, GPS off, Bluetooth off, 3G radio off
2) When leaving/away from home, switch WiFi Off, 3G radio on etc.
Quite a simple requirement but not sure how it can be accomplished with the current design restrictions. Due to location based triggers only working off WiFi (not even Cell tower coarse location), it means that you can't use a combination of GPS and WiFi to fire triggers and turn each other off as and when for example
e.g. At home with WiFi on.. leave home, go out of WiFi range so turn GPS on.. arrive at destination (e.g. work) which is determined by GPS at this point, so turn that off on "arrival" and fire up WiFi. To do this, I think you would need a "NOT" feature that could be applied to triggers.. Of course, if you have a regular routine this can be more easily accomplished with Time based triggers, but not everyone keeps a schedule..
On a side note, given that when you enable and make a valid WiFi connection on a phone, any data traffic uses that connection as it superceeds any 3/4G connection.. am I right in thinking that the 3/4G radio is still enabled even if its not doing any data transfers in this case?
As you can only determine location via WiFi at the moment, it means that has to be on all the time (not ideal, but better than GPS being on all the time no?)
I'm confused???
So if you turn off the 3G radio at home, doesn't that prevent you from receiving calls? Or text?
Thanks,
Razr John
Just data over 3/4G. Calls and SMS are unaffected.
On a different note, small update on the stability of Smart Actions (for me).. after a reboot, one of my Smart Actions that was only due to start on Tuesdays and Thursdays was running.. my "Default" action and my "Home" action which should have been running, weren't.. had to disable the Tues/Thurs Smart Action before the others would restart and then I could re-enable it (after which point it went back to "ready" not active)
Might be worth keeping any eye on those..
I use juice defender to toggle wifi on for one minute automatically every time I unlock the phone. That way if I am home, smart actions picks this up and registers me home. If I'm not home juice defender turns it back off a minute later.
Another major omission, is the absence of a dock trigger. So that when I get in my car, I can disable wi-fi, enable bluetooth, enable gps. I don't use Bluetooth outside of the car so I don't need it on otherwise.

You could set the trigger to charging > usb
But then would enable all your requirements when connected to pc, unless of course you set another trigger to connected to wifi disable bluetooth

That would be fine if the car charger recognized as USB. But its not like the capability isn't there. Motorola's car finder app triggers based on whether the phone is inserted or removed from the dock.

Yes but if its in the dock wont it be classed as usb rather than a wall charger?

No sir. Its still wall charger. It only registers usb if its plugged into something that requests usb functionality like mass storage or sync.

Ok so set the trigger as charging > charger, enable all the things you want.
Then another new rule with 2 triggers, wifi > yours, charging > any, disable bluetooth and whatever else
These are just ideas, sure I read also that the rule created first will win in a conflict so might be worth creating the rule with 2 triggers first.

Yep, though I've found quite a few freebie apps that do the just that one feature.. Should work nicely in conjunction with the existing smart actions
for example "Wifi Auto Toggle"
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.andappfun.android.wifiautotoggle&feature=also_installed#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEwNCwiY29tLmFuZGFwcGZ1bi5hbmRyb2lkLndpZmlhdXRvdG9nZ2xlIl0.
Also, the Timeframe based triggers are DEFINITELY buggy... I had a timeframe set for Tues & Thurs only (0700 - 1800).. yet this morning (Friday) they kicked in. Checked my phone datetime and its definitely got the correct date set. I know its only v1.0 of the app for want of a better phrase, but with a few fixes AND Cell Tower based location for WiFi toggling built in, it could be really cool!
Trigger on Calendar Events
Hi - My current phone is dying a slow death and I'm looking at this phone to replace it later today or tomorrow. What I'd like to know about Smart Actions is this:
Can I set a trigger based on a calendar event? In other words, when I show to be in a meeting or busy, can I set the wifi off and the ringer off? As an example, that would be a basic event.
Thanks

The answer is no, the app is not that granular at present although I do see them adding more and more options to it in the future

I agree. It's pretty stupid I can't trigger and event based on if it's in the desktop dock or the car dock. And no triggering when something is charging is not the same. I only need bluetooth when I'm in my car not when I'm at my desk. I don't need wifi in the car dock but do need it at my desk, etc, etc, etc.
I think it's a nice addition to the phone, but it is lacking some important options which will hopefully updated in future updates. I'm sticking with Tasker since I already paid for it.

Can I set Tasker to kill an app when WiFi is off?

What I'm trying to do is call-forward my number to Dell VOIP when connected to WiFI, but I want to kill the Dell Voice app when I'm not connected to wifi because it's a battery drainer. So far I have everything setup so that when I'm on WiFi, all calls get routed through WiFi into the Dell Voice app.. what I cannot figure out how to do is kill the app once I disconnect from WiFI. I tried searching but couldn't find an answer. Sorry if this is in the wrong section.. not sure which section to post in
Any help here ??

You can add an exit task that will kill the app, or do the following (step by step guide)....
Create new task, click state, click net
click mobile network
Tick the mobile data network type your phone uses when not on wifi (3g and 3g hspa are most common)
Click the tick and then click new task.
Name the task and click the tick
Click the blue + button and then click app
Click kill app, click on the name of the app to kill when wifi goes off, then click tick buttons til returned to main tasker screen.
This will kill that app whenever you connect to mobile data instead of wifi, your phone switches to data when wifi is off so it will kill your app when not on wifi.
You could improve the task but if you have a data connection this will do the job.

Portable WiFi Hotspot Problem

Hi All,
I am (and may be many of us) facing the following problem while using Portable WiFi Hotspot.
When you are using your device as a wifi hotspot and if mobile screen goes off (after certain timeout) your connection will end and you will not be able to surf internet on other connected devices. Again, if you wake your screen back, you will be able to connect, access and surf via wifi hotspot.
i.e. one has to keep screen wake in order to keep connected via WiFi hotspot. As soon as screen goes off, the connection drops away.
Can anyone provide the solution of this problem.
I am using MiNiCM7+ nAa11 on X10MP.
Wrong thread... Post this in FAQ...

2. Chose newer sleep on usb connected

well, maybe this is not the best solution, but worth to try, I usually used this:
1. download on market app called No Screen Off
2. run the app
3. now your phone will not turned off it's screen
4. decrease the brightness to lowest
5. activate the wireless tethering/portable hot spot

[Q] Wifi Hotspot toggle??

I have a legit tethering plan and works when I manually go into settings and enable it. I want to quickly enable the hotspot as soon as I get in my car. I downloaded and tried many widgets to no avail. It's not even an option in Quick settings. Also tried using NFC Task Launcher by using NFC tags and the mighty Tasker app which only gets as far as disabling my wifi. Does anyone know off an app or widget that can toggle/enable Wifi Hotspot with this phone??

I have looked for some way of switching my tab from tether to wifi when I enter house. Nearest thing I found so far is "Hotspot Widget" it is in google play, I can not post links. This is a widget that switches hotspot function on/off. May be what you are looking for.
Did you get this working with the LG Optimus G? You mentioned your tab only.

Sorry for the late reply.
No I have Samsung Galaxy Ace S5830i, on which I installed "Hotspot Widget" & when I click on the icon it switches my teather hotspot on & Tab automatically switches to it when I am out of range of my home wifi. When I return home I click on the icon again to switch teather hotspot off & tab logs on to home wifi. Give it a go.

I haven't tried it, but llama has an action to toggle WiFi hot spot.
Not to mention that llama is just plain awesome.
A portable wifi settings shortcut, on the home screen, is the best solution I've found so far. At least it is only two clicks.

You can try "Delayed Lock" by j4velin in the play store. Great app - It will even turn your lock back on after disconnecting from home wifi. Works for blue tooth as well. Trial version just has a nag screen every 5 unlocks. Worth the purchase to support the dev. Also, support available here at XDA.
Currently running [email protected] app with Unlock with wifi app works great for me.... Also if you're willing to learn check out Tasker..
A slight hijack... I want to do the same thing, but slightly different. Does anyone know of an app that unlocks when you are NEAR your home wifi, but not actually connected to it? I live in the sticks & have 12Mbps satellite internet with a 10GB monthly limit. My 4g connection is faster & I'm still on unlimited. I've tried using Tasker, but can't seem to get it to work.

With this:
"Delayed Lock Location Plugin" - in the play store (same developer).
(same lock screen functionality, just location based, not GPS, uses cell towers)

I use an app called "phone locator pro" and it has the option. It works great. I've tested the remote features including locating, camera snapshots, and even remote wiping. All work great. It disables the lock when on any wifi connection that you register with the app. I just wish that you could also add a bluetooth connection so when I am in my car I do not have to unlock it.
Here is with tasker and secure setting example. Tasker never fails me.

I've never used Tasker. Do you think it would be possible to keep the phone unlocked when connected to any bluetooth connection? This would be awesome if you could keep the phone unlocked in your car.

I am a fan of tasker, but I think delay lock is better. It does Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. I have never been satisfied with using tasker for this purpose...it "misses" too often.
