Hi everyone,
I am just curious why there are few roms for Kindle Fire HDX? Is it due to the locked bootloader?
is there any chance that we could have a custom rom for KitKat (Android L) in the near future (e.g. one year later) or it's impossible (in principle) if Amazon does not open bootloader and does also not provide a rom based on these versions of Android (KitKat, Android L)?
The locked bootloader is what is keeping us from a full ROM replacement. The ROMs that exist have to work with the kernel that the HDX has (4.2.2 IIRC). Being confined to this kernel will prevent us from getting on KitKat or later until either the bootloader is cracked or Amazon releases a version of FireOS based on KitKat or later AND that version is rooted.

Is it possible to crack a bootloader? and how difficult is it?

Read general section. The boot loader is broke now but the exploit has not been released. This has been confirmed by a very reputable Dev (hashcode) and jcase himself.
With the bootloader now unlocked -yet to be released-, we can expect development whithin a few months I would guess.

I am coming from a long line of HTC phones, never had a motorola phone. Always had CWM on my phones, etc...
Correct me if im wrong.
With a locked down booatloader, we can only have roms based on OTA updates?
Custom roms are not possible because of locked bootloader?
One can not use the source of ICS, GB, or froyo and create a rom for a device with a locked bootloader?
AOSP (CM) won't work with a locked bootloader because it has a custom kernel, and a custom kernel needs an unlocked bootloader?
So what are the current rumors regarding the bootloader unlock(not bootstrap)?
Will there be an unlock tool from moto or are we waiting for some kind of exploit?
I am in the last few days where i can return this device for something else.
I do not want to be stuck with a locked down device. (looking at the Rezound forum..there seems to be more hope)
your thoughts...
thanks.
Good question! Wished I new all the answers.

#1 - No, there is a workaround called 2nd-init that lets us change everything except the kernel. Just look at DROID X/2/2 GLOBAL.
#2 - Custom roms are very possible either way, even without 2nd-init
#3 - If you can add 2nd-init, then you may. otherwise you need to work backward or forward from moto firmwares.
#4 - Cyanogen uses 2nd-init on devices with locked bootloaders. Some features require kernel changes (2D hardware acceleration for example) otherwise, it will work fine.
#5 - Rumor is that unlock is coming with ICS for international devices, not VZW though.
#6 - See above. VZW will need an exploit or an edit of the international unlock.
Someone has been reading the blogs.
And I see it in the comments all the time... OMG LOCKED BOOTLOADER I WANTED TO FLASH A ROM.
Although I'm not seeing anything yet, but give it time, it will happen.

Wondering if this is possible?
I have a C6806 through Bell. It however uses the Sony Branded ROM. Would this update work or are their hardware differences which would cause a brick?

Oh please read some threads in this great forum it got asked soo many times. To your question: No as of now this is not possible. And most likely making your device a regular GPe will not be possible too. A modified version of the rom will be available soonish

I purchased a c6806 from Bell about 3 weeks ago and would prefer to be on the GPe firmware, if possible. Under the Android development forum for the Xperia ZU, bigxie has posted a port of DooMLoRD's 4.4 ROM. With my unlockable bootloader, is it even possible for me to attempt to flash this rom? And if I do, will it mostly likely brick my device?

It does say unlocked in the OP of the thread, and needs either the stock GPE kernel or the modified GPE kernel. I dont believe that either will boot on a locked ZU

You're on Bell which means that Bell have locked the bootloader themselves. You can't unlock your bootloader, so you can't flash custom ROMs (including GPe). This might change in the future though (if some dev manages to crack it), but don't count on it.
Hello, as my thread title suggests I have a question about custom kernels. I made the mistake of updating to 4.3 on my device [I did it for the TRIM feature but wasnt aware of the cons Verizon put in place with 4.3], before 4.3 I was rooted and was using the stock OS and kernel. I do know that its possible to get Root access with 4.3 and Ive already done that - My question is if it is possible to install a custom kernel that will allow me to overclock this device ? I know there are a ton of kernels out there, but I dont want to risk bricking this device or having to download the ODIN 1GB+ 4.3 android file to bring it back to life..Thanks in advance!
Unfortunately, you cannot install a custom kernel. You would need to have an unlocked bootloader to install custom kernels.... and there's no current do it yourself method to unlock the 4.3 MJ9 bootloader.
4.1.2 was the last Android build for our phones where you could have unlocked the bootloader.... and so far, it doesn't look like there's going to be a method developed for 4.3.

That sucks...I dont think there is a way to go back to 4.1.2 either. Thanks for answer anyways.
I speak for the people on versions 3.2.7 3.2.8 4.1.x and 4.5.x my question is will there be any way in the foreseeable future of uniting the people below 3.2.7 with those that are higher and only seem to have access to nexus 4.2.2 safestrap edition 1.0.1 pretty much all versions of both tablets (except Saturn) have been rooted but they are unable to do much due to the bootloader incompatibilities. Wish auto update was not a feature.
I am hoping for the longest and most prospererous future for our device. I am very sorry if this is spam or irrelevant.
What can we expect to see coming in the future for new bootloader devices?
No one knows.
it would be nice though
darn i wish i could develop roms but i dont have the time (college)

The thing is, it's not just about someone creating a compatible ROM or unlock. Otherwise, we would've already seen some development for the newer firmware versions. The sole reason for why these things are possible in the first place lies in exploits. No one has been able to discover any holes in the system yet that make these devices vulnerable enough for "attacks" like allowing you to replace the stock recovery or kernel.
I'm kinda bored with nexus safestrap.
Is there anything that can be done with fastboot, can we use that to unlock the bootloader similar to how Sony Xperias get unlocked?
No, completely different devices and software and everything else. Only similar thing is the base of Android, and even then, both Amazon and Sony modified the base(Amazon more so)
Hello,
for quite some time I am using Android 4.4.4, but a few days ago I got notified that there a some updates for my device via the Cyanogenmod-Updater.
My question is if I can update my device.
Furthermore Nightly means that isn't finished yet. Can I see somewhere which bugs this version has.
I've added some Screenshots.
Thanks

No, chances are, you can't. I personally tried to install CM13 on SafeStrap, it just turned the screen on and off, before rebooting into recovery. Soon after that, I unlocked the bootloader, installed TWRP, and CM13. This should work (even from CM11): http://forum.xda-developers.com/kindle-fire-hdx/general/multi-platform-1-click-bootloader-t3241014
Thanks for your answer. But why do I get the offer to upgrade to cm13 as an Over-The-Air update.
And I cant do your update, because I had FireOS 5 on my device, so my bootloader is not unlocked.

If you are running Safestrap v4.0.1 and CM 11 then the underlying version of FireOS previously on your device was FireOS v4 (likely 4.5.2 based on post history). A 3rd Gen HDX can not be upgraded to FireOS v5.
In response to your question you can not update CM 11 to CM 13 while operating under Safestrap. However, you can unlock the bootloader which will eliminate the need for Safestrap and open the door to a wider array of custom ROMs including CM 12.1 and CM 13.
The unlock procedure is a bit involved at present but an enhanced '1-click' unlock utility is supposedly in the works. I suggest you stay on CM 11 and Safestrap v4 for now unless that combination is no longer meeting your needs.
