Sony Xperia Z2 Stock Android ROM - Xperia Z2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi XDA. This is my first time on this forum, and I have one or two questions to ask before I purchase this phone.
First off, I absolutely hate the UI Sony puts on the Z2, so I want to root it and possibly get a stock Android version on the phone. Is that possible? I haven't bought the phone yet, and I have only rooted one phone in the past which has ended up with me bricking it and leading me through a 3 hour adventure to fix it.
I know this question doesn't belong in this thread, but I don't want to make another separate thread, and possibly have it removed, but if there isn't a stock Android version for the Z2, do you think the Samsung Galaxy S5 Active is a decent phone? I like this version of TouchWiz, and I love the aesthetics of the Titanium Gray S5 A.

So you hate sony almost stock looking ui, but you like stock android look, and on top of that you like touchwiz? Sorry, but this just doesnt make any sense Imo go for samsung then, it is a decent phone just like any other flagship device.

Sorry. I should've made it more detailed. I don't really like the icons. Maybe if I went out to a store to try it, I might have different opinions about it, but based off of reviews, I don't really like the stock Sony Icons. The UI is decent though. I kinda like the notification toggles.
I guess I'm just used to using TouchWiz. Sure, if Google made a GPE Z2, I'd buy it, but they don't have it.

Well icons are very easily replaceable, but to me it looks like you answered your question yourself. If you want touchwiz, go for samsung, you wont find it here And i read some rumors about s5 gpe edition, so you will have a wider choice of roms you want. Development on z2 is slower than s5.

If icons are the only issue, that's an incredibly trivial thing to change. Just install a launcher (like Apex or Nova), and download an icon pack of your choice to apply it. Here's a screenshot of my homescreen, can you even tell it's supposed to be a Z2?

UI can be changed to suit your needs, even without a new ROM. Things like icons, launchers, and widgets can all be modified out of the box, and if you really need more changes, just root and install the Xposed framework to get some handy modules. All of the above is done on a locked bootloader, too.

That looks amazing. No, I can't even tell that it's a Z2. That is one of the nicer home screens that I have seen. What launcher and settings are you using? Are you using any themes?

The launcher is Nova, I'm using the free version. The things I did off the top of my head:
disabled the dock
applied the "tiny white icons" theme pack
enabled status bar toggling (hide/show status bar on command)
set the desktop grid to 5 x 10
Outside of that, the clock/battery widget was made using ZooperWidget Pro. It's just a Battery Progress Bar, an oversized Clock text, and a small piece of text that displays the date (very close to a default ZW configuration). Navigation bar buttons, however, I will admit that it requires root, and you have to install Xposed to get it. The Xposed module that changes status bar buttons that I'm using is called "Xperia/AOSP NavBar Buttons".
That's really all there is to it. Get Nova Launcher, a nice icon pack, a good background, and just go from there. If you want to modify things like nav bar and status bar, you'll have to root.

I'm pretty busy till the end of next week, but if no one steps forward send me a PM
well if you are willing to use Launcher7 doante rather than Metro UI this status bar is already offerred. I also prefer L7 because it offers more customisation options (love the way wp7 works just not the way it looks). Anyway if not I'm sure the guy above seemed willing to help you out.
yes Launcher 7 is nice but with limitations. there are specific things that I would like in the look and feel and that I think would make Android much more appreciated. But I like the knowledge to do it. All I know is the vision of end result
@wayferer you can already count on that beer! heck...lets do 6 pack!
Sorry guys I dropped the ball on this one. I will work on it asap

Sent from my HTC Desire HD using XDA Premium App
I'm also interested in this. Android is powerful but fugly. Windows Phone UI is simple and clean. Whether you like that or not is a matter of taste.
Launcher 7 is a great interpretation of the windows phone UI, but the status bar in L7 is strictly limited to the launcher application. I think that the OP wants a CM7 theme or a mod to the status bar so that the WP7 status bar is present throughout the phone experience, and I don't think that is a bad idea.
I would also suggest that a pervasive WP7 notification system would be pretty cool. Popup 7 is pretty cool but it should be more deeply integrated with whichever messaging apps you use and should have more customization options, imho.
As far as a WP7 keyboard goes, the best I've found is this HTC_IME mod.
For launchers there are alternatives to L7, but they are inferior in function and customization options. Further, Timo, the L7 dev, is adopting the new Seven+ UI library.
The best example of the Seven+ stuff is probably the Seven+ Calculator.
I also like the WP7 Lock, which is part of the Seven+ project.
In my estimation there are no good Phone, Contacts, or Dialer replacements available yet. There are some available, but not good.
Yup, also still interested in this.
Sent from my DHD on a weekend, AKA I'm probably drunk.
I would like to "third" a request for this particular status bar if anyone could duplicate it...
Making it would not be that hard. Just have to swap the color images of android out for black and white ones. It would not effect any 3rd party apps but would work.for rest of UI. Would be ROM spicific though
Ok so an update on progress (I apologize for the long silence due to family issues) below is a sample of the icons I have made that will replace some of the ones in Android. One of the biggest problems is that Android has so many icons that I can't find Win Phone 7 samples for, so will have to think of something...
I would love some feedback on these please so don't hold back
looks really nice! can`t say about the proportions without a reference.
as for the many icons, I can`t see what other icons we need besides these?

Unfortunately the Seven+ Project has not yet found a developer interested in creating a phone/ contacts/ dialer application. Also, to the best of my knowledge it is impossible to make a custom dialer screen without root, and all applications offered as part of the project are designed to work on any device whether or not it is rooted.
We are also very glad to have Timo Kujala join our project as his Launcher is undoubtedly the closest I have found. The developers of WP7Lock and ZPlayer have also joined our project, so while our suite is not yet complete it is on its way. The developer of Popup 7 is the developer working on our SMS application.
If you or anyone else would like more information on our project, applications, developers, etc. check out our website, blog, and forum.
Best,
- Tom
Actually this is possible without root, but it would likely drain the devices battery faster. Having built the WP7-style status bar that is part of my UI with Toast integration it is fairly simple. I think the best solution would be a custom ROM to ensure that all components can interact with one another and not drain the battery by having two status bars simultaneously but having one be hidden.

[Q] I want my phone my way

First off, thanks for any help. That being said, I have very little experience with modding, and I would like to not root my phone and lose the ota update capabilities, but I want to customize my phone. I have a tbolt that I have done the stock ruu radio update on, and a droid x that it replaced. I recently did the manual gingerbread update on the x and I love it. My question is can someone help me make my launcher(rosie) look and work like this one on my thunderbolt?

you cant make rosie look like that but you can find out what launcher that is and install it on your thunderbolt. im sure someone else will be able to tell you what launcher that is if you dont already know.as far as not wanting to root because you cant get ota updates, i wouldnt let that hold you back. you will most like be able to get these updates several weeks before they are released as ota updates
that is the android version 2.3.3, system version 4.5.588.MB810.Verizon.en.US Luancher.
There isn't a lot of theming options without rooting. And that is the Moto(Ninja)blur launcher that Motorola makes, and I highly doubt it can be ported, or that anyone would work on it honestly. I know the new blur is nice, but it's proprietary to Motorola phones. Even if it was hacked to work on an HTC phone there is a 95% chance that you would have to be rooted to be able to use it.
TL;DR
No
If you want a stock look like that, really you are best off rooting and flashing a 'senseless' rom for the immediate future, or an AOSP like CM7 when it is ready to be a daily driver.
Without rooting, basically use either ADW or launcherpro to achieve similar looks. I've used both and pretty similar capabilities in the end.
1. Install ADW, install Moto Blur theme.
2. customize the dock to look like seen above.
3. google "droid x wallpaper", set as wallpaper.
ta-da.
While it won't be the same it'll be pretty damn close. Let's be honest though, no one likes blur. It's a crappy skin, it makes touchwiz look awesome. So, no one is going to waste time porting it.
edit: yay! 400th post!

+1 adw launcher would be your best bet, this coming from a former adw user, current launcher pro user, i think adw droid x/blur skin would give you the closest feel.
i would root if i were you. it has about a million advantages and makes your phone far more customizable.
Thanks for the input guys, but to be clear, all I'm interested in off that screen is the launcher bar. looks and actions. that is just a generic screenshot. I'm curently trying launcher pro and its ok.

Better Lockscreen Needed for Android

I'm reposting this from another thread I was in, but I wanted some general thoughts from the community.
One thing I think that iPhone does better is the lockscreen. I know Apple stole the notification bar from Android, but they do a better job with the lockscreen.
I can't figure out why Android won't put more information on the lockscreen. Info like text messages, who called me when (missed calles), email.
I used an app on the iPhone that was nice, the Lockinfo program. It required a jailbreak, but it was cool. http://www.lockinfo.net/ It was really nice.
I've tried a few alternatives in Android, but nothing seems to work quite as smooth. I've tried widget locker + pure messanger. Wasn't a smooth experience.
Thoughts?
I actually find the iPhone lockscreen to be quite cluttered. I recently came from an iPhone to a Nexus S i9020a and loving ICS so far and the great community.
I still have my iPhone but I've had times where I would get multiple notifications on the lockscreen and the entire screen is filled with clutter. First there's the date and clock area, then you got the bottom slide, then the middle gets filled with notifications. I find it bothersome actually. I much prefer the lockscreens on Android and Windows Phone.
I guess I enjoy seeing my background more than who called or contacted me. I can see that when I go into the app itself.
I guess its a personal preference to what you would like in the lock screen. However all your notification do appear in the notification bar.
Try MiLocker
Actually, Android has a much larger variety of what you can have on your lockscreen. I've had simple setups that just show missed calls and texts. I have my current setup that shows missed calls, texts, new emails, and allows me to go directly to those as well as music, camera, and home screen from the unlock slider.
If you run MIUI you can also run a setup that not only shows current status updates but also gives you a preview of the most recent. Take a look: http://gadgetdesire.blogspot.com/2011/12/miui-theme-slidescreen-ls.html
Bottom line is you can have as few or as many updates as you like on Android, just a matter of your preferences.
And if you want something simple to use with android search the web for txtmissed. Great app, just no longer under development.
TXTmissed on my old Widget Locker Screen. Takes you directly to calls log or default text service:

totally agreed. it would be nice to have a pop-up on LS when i have a missing call or a text.
MIUI rom will show you how android does with the lockcscreen, its never been better
Seconding MiLocker here. Didn't want full blown MIUI but the lock screen choices are pretty ridiculous in number. Been happy with it and it seems to be fully customizable.
you can use widget locker i think
i find it not enough configurable... i want to see my coming sms.
Maybe give GO Locker a try
Go Locker needs Go Laucher to work. Sadly

How can I get full color status bar icons in Marshmallow?

Hi, everyone. I've been searching for an answer for this unsuccessfully, so forgive me if someone else has asked and answered.
I have a stock rooted (bootloader unlocked) LGE Nexus 5X. I absolutely HATE the solid white icons in the status bar in Marshmallow. I miss the original full color icons from older versions of Android. I'm not a fan of the status bar changing colors with the apps either.
Is there a way to restore the ability of apps to display their original full (multi) color icons in the status bar? Third party replacement status bars, root access, Xposed modules, etc., are all acceptable solutions.
Thanks!

You will have to use a theme. Or rip apart the os and remove the code that makes them white.

I was hoping someone else had already done this in a nice easy Xposed module. I can't be the only person who hates these solid white icons that strip all detail that makes them easily identifiable. I honestly thought this would be a common complaint about Marshmallow.
Are there themes that restore apps ability to display full color icons? If so, I don't know where to begin. I've never been interested in themes before.

You need a rom that supports themes. To be honest alot of people like the MD (Dont ask me why) Also as for xposed I cant say as most developers are not a fan of xposed and most custom roms dont offer support for it and advise not to use it.

Dont mention lucky patcher here. It is a nice way to be banned.
They are just not following googles guidelines. The stock icons are all white. All you have to do is rip open the the frameworks files to see. There is also a color overlay that google uses to turn all icons white if coded properly.

BTW, thanks for all the feedback on this.
If I want to tinker with this (modifying the frameworks, etc.), can you guide me as to where to begin? I do have old AOSP source on one of my VMs on my PC, and I can always use git to bring it up-to-date. For instance, the location of this overlay that turns all icons white would be a GREAT place for me to start. I have compiled AOSP before, so I'm not afraid to do it, but it may take me a while to get my build environment setup again.
No problem. Depending on the device and the rom you run depends on where it will be. Most of the icons are in the framework res and system ui but you will also have to find the color overlay on the xmls. Not really sure where as with LP and Mm I walked away from theming.
@zelendel do you know where in mm this code resides. making a custom rom and wanting to undo this "fix" that google has implemented.......
Hi! You are not alone. I would kill Google designer. This looks like a big unbelievable non-sense: good hardware, stable and well-featured software and such perverted and mutilated UI. If everyone forgot how human-oriented icons should look like, I will remind:
I HAVE A LEARNING DISABILITY and the all-white icons are driving me crazy. INEED THE COLORS BACK so I can tell one bit of innformation from another. Right now, everything looks like one white splotch. I WANT MY COLORS BACK!!

Oxygen OS sounds like it checks all the boxes for me and I'm looking forward to finding out for sure.

I was going to give it a try as well, but it doesn't look like it offers infinite scrolling. I hate getting to one end and then have back the other way. Maybe it's in the options, but I didn't bother looking for it since I've been using Nova forever.
You might be right.
I haven't used that in a quite a while as I've been going with just 2 pages plus the google discover page.
I've basically cut it down to just 2 widgets too. Transparent Weather with the shortcuts on my homescreen and Acalendar+ widget on the next screen.
Now I do like the dock on Nova. I'm currently rolling with 7 icons in the dock and 3 dock pages. That'll be different if I stick with oxygen os.
I saw a video that you can use the old android buttons and customize them to do other tasks. I'm not sure if I want to go back to buttons but that's intriguing to me anyway.
I like shortcuts.
