[Q] please help!! - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi,
i have a stock version of the galaxy s3 locked to vodafone.
it is running android 4.3
baseband i9300buunb1
kernal version 3.0.31-2429075 [email protected] #1 thu jan 23:47:54 kst 2014
build number JSS15J.I9300XXUGNA5
Not sure if any of the above will help.
i have recently been having unfortunately clock has stopped messages, also unfortunately, the process com.android, phone has stopped messages keep showing up on my screen. sometimes it comes up with hancent has stopped too. but that is very infrequently. the frequency of these messages are making my phone nearly unusable.
i have tried force closing the clock in the running apps and cleared data as some sites have explained.
i have searched for an answer to this problem to no avail.
i hope someone on here can help me find out how i can rid of these messages (or problem), without having to do a factory reset.
thanks in advance

You will have to factory reset, possibly reflash your rom as well.

this is an unrooted phone. so reflashing a rom might be a problem if i have to root it 1st.
would the best way to factory reset, to do in through settings or through recovery.
i was hoping that factory reset would be the last resort to be honest.
thanks

I think a factory reset is your best bet now. Just back up your data and everything should be fine again.

It wouldn't let me even back up my data. Lost loads. But factory reset sorted it out. Many thanks

CORRECTION,
woke up this morning and now it is saying Google play has stopped working and the phone is less usable. doing my head in now. i tried installing Google play and the error stopped. reinstalled and the problem came back/
any other help suggestions please???????

Unless you've modified something then, by flashing or restoring then your firmware is corrupting itself -probably due to nand memory failure. Try the test app from freezing thread in general forum.

I haven't knowingly changed anything in the firmware. But I have now forced an update through kies on my computer. Once again, so far so good.

Lock screen stuck?

Hi all. Since I updated to XXLG8, my lock screen sometimes doesn't allow interactions and I need to reboot in order to use my phone. Anyone having this problem? Or anyone know how I can fix this?

I had the same problem, just reinstall the firmware and should get fixed by itself.
Note that by 'reinstall' he most probably does not mean Factory Reset but flashing the same (or a newer ROM) through Odin.
That keeps all your data intact.
Thanks for the answers people. Will try tomorrow

That does not work for this problem. I had this before LG8. Did a full factory reset, new firmware, etc. on LG8. Fine for first day, but started experiencing the problem. I'm also using SpeedMod K1-5.
I think it might have to do with WIFI. If it isn't on, it never locks, at least for me.
Hope you selectively restored only user apps and data after installing new firmware

"Process android.process.media has stopped" after JB update

Hey guys, I can't even use my phone after the official update of the Jelly Bean (via Kies). After booting, the phone freeze almost completely and pop-up this message. Any fix without reseting ? I tried cleaning the cache but the problem isn't fixed
If anybody had this issue, can give me an idea about how to fix it ? Thanks
Try clearing its data in app manager
Nop, can't find it. I tried cleaning most of data but nothing works :/ Damn...is Samsung able to do something without bugs ?
that's why no one uses kies
Factory reset or download an Odin version and flash with Odin

Yeah, I like to root, but not to change the rom Now I need to root again. At least the issues has been solved.
Fixing permissions usually solves that problem barring that a full wipe and start again.

As I got the official update, I lost the root, I tried to clear the cache and as I've seen that is not working and the phone was freezing each 5 seconds I got a bit scared to start rooting it. I wiped it, installed my apps and now everything is ok. However, it's weird that I didn't got the apps automatically installed like it's happened last time when Amazon replaced my S3 for some screen issues (some scratches inside the screen). I just added my google account and everything started installing automatically. Not this time...
just downloaded jelly bean tonight and having this issue. has anyone come up with a solution that does not involve a full hardware restart???
Had same problem after I updated 3 months ago. I think was an incompatibility with an app or something has not updated completely. Fixed it with factory reset.
You can backup apps with Samsung Kies I think if you don't want to lose progress in games, the other stuff is automatically synced

I'm afraid it'll probably have to be a full reset just make sure you've backed up.

Jelly Bean Qu's (possible issues)

Hi All,
My S3 updated to JB last night, I have a couple questions..
1. When I restart my phone a message saying android is upgrading apps always appears (Does anyone else keep getting that?/ Is it normal?)
2. Is there any way to change the vibrate/ringtone notifications, where the default I chose applies to all apps, rather than having to individually change settings in each app.
I am rooted, I have removed all the bloatware, but the rom and kernel are stock.
Thanks in advance

Thanks for the reply,
everytime I restart my phone I get that message. Maybe something went wrong? but I did use kies to do the update.
Is there a cache I can clear, maybe it would stop it??
Update: Tried clearing Dalvik cache, didnt do anything.
When the phone started back up, it said upgrading 96 apps.
When it was done, I restarted and it still has a similar message :/
Im stumped.
Thanks in advance
Backup and try factory reset.

Htcdm stopped responding

Hi all, so for awhile now I've been getting a few times a day, this message popping up. Htcdm not responding. Did some googling, but can't find a clear answer exactly what this is. Anyone know? Phone is working ok otherwise , haven't noticed any issues other than that. Not rooted, completely stock.

Same issue here. I notice it more often after I reboot the phone. I was going to update to 2.06 to see if that fixed it but I get the same error message when I ask the phone to "Check for update" Currently on 2.04. Any help is greatly appreciated!
Did either of you try a factory reset? It may be possible an app is causing the failure.
Yes. But here is the insane thing. No matter how I do a factory reset, either through the phone or through fastboot/hboot? it does not do anything to the phone. No data is wiped and all my apps and settings are still there after the factory reset, even though I tell it to wipe everything. I am not rooted and it is showing S-ON.
fixed mine

I had that issue when they were pushing the last couple updates. I think it's a server issue on htc side. I fixed it by clearing HTC DM services in all apps and then restarting on WiFi, going into update again and checking while on WiFi. I think I had also reset htc download manager.
Ok, thanks for the help. I'll keep trying a bunch of different stuff. It still baffles me that so far, I can, in no way, return my DNA to a factory state. I've tried from inside the phone OS, also from the hboot "factory reset" and from within recovery itself "wipe data, factory reset" nothing will successfully wipe my phone. It starts and then just reboots and boots back into android with nothing changed...any advice on this? Thanks again for the help.
Thanks for the suggestions. Ill try a factory reset. See how that goes

[Q] Unable to call or SMS and global mode

Hello!
First things first, I have searched the internet, not just XDA, far and wide for these problems. I have followed nearly every lead I could find before creating a post about this, I am at wits end and at this point have had to remove the phone from the premises before something bad happened to it.
My problems:
"Switch to Global mode" constantly pops up"
Cannot send or receive either texts nor phone calls
Setup:
Previously on CleanRom 3.5, decided to try CM10.2. Downloaded and installed CWM to use instead of TWRP, downloaded CM10.2, wiped cache, factory reset, installed CM10.2 zip file as well as Gapps for 4.3. CM10.2 exhibited the above behavior. Currently I am sitting on completely stock JB 4.1.2, the details are below.
Network: Unknown
Mobile Network type: Unknown:0
Service State: Out of service
Mobile Network State: Disconnected
Phone number: <correct #>
IMEI: <correct IMEI, validated per inside battery cover>
Android 4.1.2
Baseband: I605VRAMC3
Kernel: 3.0.31-1098177
[email protected]#1
SMP PREEMPT Fri Mar 29 10:58:51 KST 2013
Build Number: JZO54K.I605VRAMC3
Hardware Version: I605.06
Mitigation attempts:
Downgrade to CM10.1 (AOSP keyboard would not work)
Tried various AOSP and TW ROMs, to no avail.
Cleared cache, dalvik cache and factory reset between each attempt
Finally downloaded stock ROM, followed steps here (great guide btw!) using Odin, no change.
I truly don't know what else to do at this point. I feel like I've done everything I've seen and my problems are still around. I see a lot about IMEI (not sure what it is or what it does), but mine is present and has been throughout this ordeal. Occasionally my phone number would read as 000-000-3279, which was not correct, but that was only on the CM ROMs. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated, I don't want a Note 2 paper weight or media device hanging around, I want my phone back - stock form is fine. Thank you for reading all this and I appreciate any help that can be sent my way.
I am in this exact situation.
Was on stock, VRAMC3 and wanted to go custom.
The CASUAL exploit worked just fine, and once I had CWM I attempted to flash CM 10.2.
It just didn't seem right.
Every other ROM I've tried since that point I am unable to send/receive texts, and get the Global mode popup constantly.
I tried to revert back to stock via this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2024207 But no luck.
Any help would be appreciated.
I ran into this last night while trying a new rom(coming from Beans 22). I can't call or receive calls. I can receive texts, but can't send them. Data works. I've tried multiple ROM's, and it's the same situation with each(CM10.2, 10.1, XenonHD). I just tried returning everything to stock with Odin, and continue to have the same issues. My phone number reads as 000-000-2780. My IMEI is correct. Service State: Out of service. If I switch to CMDA/LTE, I get hammered with "switch to global mode" popups. If anyone has any suggestions, please post them.
I had LTE and wifi when this happened to me, so I was able to download Telinfo from Play.
Also, I had ODINed back to Root66 so all the hidden menu options were available.
Your modem needs to reset, so go into device info and turn off your radio. Toggle to LTE/CDMA/EvDo and then turn radio back on.
I don't remember if a reboot was necessary.
My modem was fine after that.
Let me know if this works for you.

hi.. same thing happened to me. Was trying different roms coming from Beans22, lost ability to make/receive calls but data connection was fine.
Questions:
Did you have to change rom back to factory stock before doing the radio toggle thing?
What is "ServiceMode Shortcut"?
Thanks much!
wutek, I did change back to factory stock before I did the radio toggle, but I think you can do it from whatever rom you flashed to. "ServiceMode Shortcut" is an app from the store that allows you to access the service mode menu. After installing it, go to testing>device information, and reset the modem from there as pdinphx advised. Good luck!
Having the same problem. Flashed 10.2 last night from cm11, didn't make a call just went to bed and woke up and had this problem. Tried using that app from 10.2 without any luck unless I am doing something wrong. I guess I am gonna try after using Odin. Anyone else having any luck?

hi ap0ptosis,
quick update... I was able to regain radio after odin to root66, toggle using telinfo, factory reset. Thanks for the info on the ServiceMode Shortcut app.
To all.. thanks for the help... I am back and kicking. However, I am now staring at the big elephant in the room so have to ask the question... how did this all of the sudden start to happen? It started for me when I tried out some 4.3 Roms but radio going bonkers did not happen immediately. For me it happened overnight w/o me touching anything. The message I would continuously get is "Mobile network not available" . Also phone would keep asking to switch to global mode.

Glad you got yours going. When using root 66 do I still need to use the pit file alongside? Have the 66 downloaded but never used it.

hi mikelikesbikes.. I followed the exact instructions from the below url. So definitely, I used pit. Good Luck

Have Odin running as I type using root 66 and the pit. How does one reset the radio from the playstore app? I see how to turn off the radio and change radio but not how to reset it. Obviously it is staring me in the face.

So I got it going. Used the root 66 file and didn't have a operating system to boot into, only cwm recovery which was weird. So I used Odin and went back completely stock, and ran that app from the play store. Still didn't work until I factory reset from within settings and that was what got it I suppose. I wonder also what caused it and why others had the same issue on the same morning. Like I said previously I was running 4.4 for a few days and went back to 4.3. That's the only thing I did differently. Anyway, ran Casual, and running Beans 22 and happy.

Hi mikelikesbikes,
Glad u got it working again. Interesting... I did read somewhere that root66 may not work and if so, to use vz stock.
Correct, factory reset is within the phone>settings>backup reset menu... cheers
Not sure why this happens but I had the same thing happen to me. I tried cm11 and then switched to cm10 after switching back to tw rom I was in roaming only. A simple factory reset took care of the issue. So I think the common denominator here is the series of events cm11 to cm10 to touchwiz....
Sent from my SCH-I605 using Tapatalk
I had this problem coming from stock MC3 --> Root/Unlock --> CM 10.2
No calls / SMS on 10.2, and still nothing coming back to stock MC3.
You guys saved my ass, thanks! Toggling the radio / factory restore worked for me.
Anyone know what ROMs are SAFE to use without this issue appearing?
Back to normal, whew!
I had been stable on cm10.2 nightlies as of 11/29 with mc3. Installed cm11 everything was operational. I was able to bounce back and forth between my backups. As soon as I updated to the newest nightly for cm10.2, 12/1, that broke my voice/sms.
Ended up reverting back to stock, factory reset from settings in stock and was back up and running.
From here I used casual and tried to go back to the 12/1 nightly and still had the same issues.
Repeated stock process/casual and am now on slimrom 4.3 mc3 and running smoothly. Just wanted to get my problems and solution out there for more info.
This was a fairly common problem with the S3.
The key to fixing it is not in the factory reset but in the reprovisioning of the phone's modem, which typically requires a stock rom to access Samsung's hidden service menu.
Incidentally, even a touchwiz rom built off another carrier's base (or international base) can trigger this problem.

Same Issue
I'm running into the same issue as ya'll. Flashed CM 10.2, than flashed back to CleanRom 3.5 and not able to make calls or send text. Can receive text and all incoming calls go to Voicemail. I ODIN back to stock VRALJB, can't seem to get phone going again. Tried toggling Radio and Factory Data reset, but now the phone is just stuck in Roaming Mode. Any help?
