Low Quality Album Art - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've used two Android phones, a Samsung Galaxy Ace (2.3.6) and an LG L90 (4.4.2). Both phones have the same problem - their default music players compress the album art of .mp3 to undesirable quality.
I've edited the tags of all my .mp3 files with a 500x500 cover and every album folder has a file of the cover named 'folder.jpg', but this problem still persists.
The stock L90 music player has a very nice album viewer, but the quality is just hear-breaking. I'm looking if anyone has any solutions how to fix the album art quality. Here's a pic of how it looks right now:

For those having the same problem as me, I could only find one work-around that fixes the album art on the actual player. It's manual work for each album, but it does appear to function:
---On Android 2
* Go to SD card -> Android -> data -> com.android.providers.media -> albumthumbs. You should find a list of files without extensions and with random numbers as names.
* Open each file with an image viewer until you find the album art you wish to change (it should take some time since you can't tell which file belongs to which album).
* Note down the name of the file.
* Place the high-quality album art into the folder and rename it with the name you noted down.
---On Android 4
* Same as above, only the location of the low-quality album art files should be on your internal SD card (on my L90, the location is /storage/emulated/0). Then it's the same: Android -> data -> com.android.providers.media -> albumthumbs.
The results:
This method does fix the cover of the album that is currently playing, but I have not found a way of fixing the art shown while viewing all albums on the device (first pic of my post). Anyone have any suggestions how to get them in high quality?
I know that most of you will suggest getting an alternative player, but this stock one is well-integrated with the device and has a very simplistic interface. It would be the perfect player if it weren't for that god damned album art!

...soo, no suggestions? Or is this forum just a bit too crowded?

I have Xperia M with latest Walkman (version 8.4.A.3.1). And the quality of album art is low. I have mp3 with high quality album art (embedded). I think this is android bug.

Thanks for you solution! I think the player uses the same thumbnail for both. To elaborate, the album art of the song when you play it is the same thumbnail file as the album art when you go to the "Albums" page. However, though your solution works for when you're playing the song, it doesn't seem to work for the "Albums" page. I'm not sure if this made sense.

Hero music player and album art?

Does anyone know how to add album art to the Hero music player? I have most of my music tagged in WMP, however no pics are coming up whatsoever :-(
Not sure really but I do know there is a program in the market that adds album covers to music but I can't recall the name offhand.
Depends on how there tagged... try loading a mp3 in Mp3tag (http://www.mp3tag.de) and see if the album art displays in that. And make shure that it's the only album art embedded in the mp3 file.
I've also found out that sometimes the music player fails to load the album art until you actually play the mp3 files (another bug?!? Never! ) Be warned however that loading loads of album art in the music player only makes it more memory hungry and slooooowwww....
I use aTunes (yeap, that's it - With an "a") to add album art, tags and lyrics to my songs.

The player works well for me, I think you only have to keep the album art under 600x600 pix and everything will be smooth.
Hmmm, this all seems too complicated. Found a *sweet* app though:
http://www.cyrket.com/package/com.mylittlebigapps.android.albumartgrabber
Costs 99p, but well worth it!
There is a program that can add the art into the media file so it will show up on your hero http://www.mediamonkey.com/

You can use itunes to embed the album art or you can do this.
E.g.
First Folder: Music
Inside the music folder create more folders for the different albums
e.g. Music/GreatestHits/
then get a JPG picture from the internet for the album, rename it to "AlbumArt" and place it in that same folder, and that should do the trick.
Hope this helps,

[Q] MP3 Problems

I'm not entirely sure if this is in the right section, since the Mp3 files work fine on Windows, I'm assuming it's an incompatibility with the phone.
Anyway, put all my music on my phone, noticed that some songs worked, and some didn't. I looked at the songs in Windows that did work, and didn't. I noticed a trend.
Songs that did work have album art, like this.

Songs that didn't work look like this,
The ones that don't work also don't have any information under the "Details" tab in the properties window.
I'm wondering how to get these MP3 files to be playable on my phone. I've tried Mixzing, and the stock player.
Thanks in advance,
Did you compare bit rates and sampling rates as well as what version of id3 tag is on hose files? Other than that not sure what else to look for.
The files that don't work don't have anything listed under the details tab. So I'm not sure of the bitrate, or the id3 tag.
Load them up in a player like WinAMP, where you can drill down and look at the detailed properties of each file. That should help you to find what the true differences are.
Alright, the ones that work are id3v2.4|id3v1, the ones that don't are id3v2.3|id3v1
Thanks for that recommendation of using an audio player.

Hmm, IF the root cause is really the ID3 tags, I'd suggest the following two next steps.
1. Try PowerAmp - that thing seems to play ANYTHING
2. Get Mp3tag (http://www.mp3tag.de/en/index.html). Load your files/tag data and re-save them all with the same tag format.
When I open them in MP3tag, I notice the songs that don't work, have no bit rate, codec, frequency, or length listed. However, it shows them as having the same tag...
Not sure if this info helps any but I use MixZing Player (free one) to play MP3 w/album art. I have played all my songs on shuffle and have not found any that would not play.
I have not tried the stock player yet.

[Q] [Help] Problems with playlist in AudiophileHD and album art displaying properly.

I'm having a couple of problems with my music collection and I have not been able to find a fix for on google, here or precentral.
The first problem is that album art is not displaying correctly anywhere. The art shows up in my pictures and looks fine. In the native media player 1/2 the albums are black and 1/2 display a question mark. In AudiophileHD a few display the right art, 1/2 of them display a picture that appear to be corrupted, some display question marks and some show a picture of a record. I attached an example at the bottom.
The second problem is that when I add music to audiophile by selecting "play all" it plays the songs in alphabetical order. They show up in the correct order on the album, but unless I add each song individually they play in alphabetical order.
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling Audiophile. I've also deleted and reloaded my music without any change. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks a bunch!

Anyone?
Sorry, I don't check XDA regularly (you just got lucky today). I am updating the metadata parser in Audiophile to better detect embedded image art. Hopefully by next week if should be in the developer build. New version will also have lag free scrolling and a bunch of other features. Thanks for the patience, and please post over at PreCentral in the future if you want a response.

[Sound Mod]Walkman on Evo 3D/V working

This is NOT my work, it's a collaboration of three Xperia mods and ports to ics. This is working on stock based rom.
Why Walkman instead of stock music player? It has a much nicer U.I.

Can edit ID tags like in Poweramp
Several different music visualizer shows
Here's Bravia in music player
And of course it's the loudest sound mod for the internal speaker, be careful, don't blow it. Also has nice surround in the headphones.Walkman is incorporated into Sony Car- best dock for the Evo, and also into G Now/Search
Track ID is like Shazam
Other apks included: YouTube extensions, lyrics extension, GMusic extension, and Wikipedia plug in.
There's a slideshow wallpaper that's compatible- very slick.
And the video player, a cool feature is a clip of video without sound in the video preview
I didn't include the photo album because albums can't be hidden, shows all music album cover jpegs, fooey:banghead: But if you want it anyway, get it from the ics Walkman port thread, the libs, jars, and permissions are included in my zip. Also didn't include some other things that aren't compatible. Here's the link to the Xperia for all devices if you'd like to mess around with other things: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2059203
On the Evo 3D/V- do NOT flash in recovery. My pirated version is safe to flash on this device, but while on the subject, I'm not responsible for you messing up your phone.
This mod is especially helpful if you're on Negalite's BluRom and you want control and to be able to disable xloud.
So if you're interested, and rooted, preparations need to be made. Add these lines to build.prop
Then flash this, wipe dalvic cache in recovery.
There is a bug with xloud stopping after 10 seconds, this is fixed in both Walkman and Movies by greenifying Sound Enhancements app.
DOWNLOAD
54MB free needed in /system, you can free up about 25MB in/system by deleting face detection in vendor/pittpatt. Approximately 30MB will be used on /data between apps dalvic and data
download link coming soon if interest is shown.
Here is a good widget for on screen volume control

[APP] MusicMan • thin and sleek file-oriented music player

MusicMan is simple and very intuitive file-oriented music player for WP8.1 and higher.
MusicMan does not generate any library or playlist automatically. MusicMan does not use the file’s metadata (e.g. MP3-tags), but works with the names of files and folders exactly how you have them stored in your phone or SD card. In addition, allows you to build your list of songs just the way you want and not how it was ‘invented’ by someone else. That’s the reason why MusicMan was created. It was created so that we, ordinary people, can play exactly what we want – quickly and easily.
Be the master of your music. Decide for yourself what to play and in what order. Use integrated file explorer to navigate folders of your phone or the SD card, choose music files and create your own playlist. Then you can immediately start reproducing it, you don’t have to do anything more.
• does not create automatically generated playlists
• simply and easily create and manage your own playlist
• playlists can be saved, named, and used later
• supports background music playback
• player control integrates into system volume control panel
• you do not need an Internet connection
• tutorial, support, official support forum
Application MusicMan is distributed only through the official Windows Phone Store.

Looks fine. But need a better design!
New version was released. What's new?

• Ability to add all tracks from selected folder to the playlist with a click to folder's icon. (folder icon with +).
• Folder-Mode, ability to directly play all tracks from selected folder. (folder icon with ).
• Fast switching between normal mode and Folder-Mode via icon in the header.
• You can even combine Folder-Mode and normal mode.
• New options added to settings, e.g. to hide background image or disable confirmations in Folder-Mode.
