[Q] Did something terrible to my phone - AT&T HTC One (M8)

I had installed Android Revolution HD custom rom and it was running perfect, but I decided I liked Viper rom more. I had viper rom on my phone storage so I performed the wipes and successfully flashed viper rom. However, when viper rom finished installing and setting up, I was met with a decrypt storage page right after the unlock screen with infinite attempts to guess a passcode I never set. What I did was try searching online for hours and eventually realized I was stuck in Philz Touch or the decrypt password screen so I factory reset, Dalvik cache cleared, and everything to the point where now I seem without any hope of being able to get anything onto the phone ever. Am I bricked?

Relax, you aren't bricked. If the screen still comes on, you can recover. Its just a matter of knowing how to do so.
Its not clear based on your description what the current state of the device is. Still stuck with the decryption password screen or recovery? Factory reset likely isn't going to do anything if you can't boot into OS; as all it does is wipe user data.
Did you make a nandroid of your previous ROM? If not, why the heck not?
If no nandroid, adb push a different ROM to the device. Then flash the ROM from recovery.

I had a backup before but now I can't access the sdcard (internal storage) and so nothing from recovery menu seems to work. I have tried adb sideloading and it says *cannon read ' ' *. Will I be able to adb push to a phone that can't recognize it's own internal storage?

With the phone connected to a PC, go to device manager, find the internal memory and format it.
Did you factory reset in bootloader? I suspect this corrupts the internal memory.
adb push won't work if the internal memory is corrupt. Don't know about sideload. Even if you flash the ROM, I don't think it will function correctly if it can't write to internal memory. You need to format the memory to sort that out.
Also, adb sideload can be finnicky. I've seen it fail lots of times when adb push works fine. But if you can get to work, good for you!

Yes you are right about factory reset in bootloader, that was my mistake I guess. the adb sideload was able to push through even though adb push was being denied. Thanks again for your help

Interesting that sideload works, while push doesn't. And not what I would expect. My understanding of sideload, it still pushes the ROM to internal memory then flashes it. Just does it all with a single adb command. So if internal memory is corrupt, I would expect to fail to push, same adb push.
Factory reset in bootloader is a honest mistake. I was only suspicious of this, since the same "bug" occurs on the One X (EVITA), where on modded phones, doing a factory reset in bootloader corrupts the internal memory. One would expect it to perform its intended function the same as factory reset in recovery or within the OS (which both should work fine).

The thing about sideload was you could initiate it into sideload mode (or whatever) and then use the adb sideload command, perhaps it would have worked with adb push if I knew more what I was doing but just simply adb push " " would not work. And yes I had a good scare when I pressed the factory reset, went into recovery and saw I deleted my zip files

adb push does not require the phone to be in any particular mode (like adb sideload does), and should work as long as the phone is on. It could be that sideload pushes to some partition that is not corrupt. Just a guess.

[Q] Any way of recovering data after doing a factory reset?

A couple of weeks ago, my SGS II crashed really badly and affected my phone in that I kept getting force close messages as well as "System UIDs Inconsistent" ones plus I couldn't access the partitions within my phone in Windows Explorer even though the phone was recognised by it.
It looks as though I may need to do a factory reset which to me is going to be a pain in the ass especially where videos and MP3's are concerned.
Another problem is that even though I installed VillainROM and followed the rules to the letter concerning its installation, supposedly I didn't install the system recovery that was unique to it and which would have made things a lot easier for me.
I don't even know if there is a way to backup data from the partitions to a 16GB or bigger micro SD card within the regular system recovery or not.
If I do need to a factory reset, are there any Apps out there that will let me recover data from the internal partitions as long as I don't write over the lost data concerned? (I know there's software available for PC that does something similar with data stored on hard drives)
Well on Cutom ROM you can use Titanium Backup Pro for Backup and Restoring. On Stock ROM's even Kies would do.
Regards.

That's the irony, I actually had Titanium Backup installed on my VillainROM custom ROM and I'd even bought an upgrade to the Pro version but for some reason, it wouldn't let me upgrade to the full version even though I had a license for it that I paid for, and as a result, it wouldn't let me do a full backup without having to do it slowly.
If I did reinstall Titanium Backup and managed to get my problem sorted out, would it recover deleted data or not?
Titanium Backup would only restore what it previously backed up.
The most easy way would be to just dump your data partition into a tarball (given you have root access on your phone).
Just hop into a terminal or adb shell and do
Code:
su
busybox tar zcvf /sdcard/data.tar.gz /data
That will give you a full .tar "backup" of all the data on the internal data partition.
Restoring that to app after a wipe and reinstall can be a bit pain in the poo, but it's better than nothing - and a recovery of previous files after a wipe would at best give you the same.

How do I go into a terminal or adb shell? I'm using Windows 7 if that's any help?
For Terminal install a Terminal App from the marketplace on your phone and run it directely on it.
ADB you get from the Android SDK.

I take it that once I do the factory reset on the phone and install a Terminal App on it via Android Market, I just need to run the command that you recommend that I do and I should be able to recover the data that was on my partitions, pre factory restore?
(Apologies for asking all these questions as I'm still a newbie when it comes to Android and I'm just pissed that this happened in the first place because of the overheating that caused it to happen in the first place)
What if I select advance restore in CWM recovery and restore data? Will it affect the flashed rom?

No, you run the command BEFORE the factory wipe and use the tarball you got to restore any data you still need.

Should work too, but depending on *what* borked up the install (might be some setting/config/piece-of-data somewhere) it will be restored as well - but definitaly worth a shot and pretty much "a must" to do those backups (I do them regulary).

No program is free without compromise. If you factory reset without backup, there is not much you can do to recover deleted files. That's why such warnings exist before reverting back to a clean state.
You can try a Recuva download the program connect as storage device and try to scan Hope it helps

Recovery programs such as recuva work best on magnetic media such as pc hard drives. Flash storage on mobile phone are different as there are no moving parts, so recovery is not that easy. There is also a much higher likelihood of corruption on flash storage too when restoring deleted files, so that's why there is really no 'best' method for recovery.
How to Recover Deleted Data from Android after Factory Reset
When you perform a factory reset on Android, you will return the device to the condition it was when shipped from the factory. A factory data reset can help fix most issues that occur on Android. Any incorrect settings, glitches, bugs, viruses, or software problems on the device will be wiped clean.
But the files deleted from an Android phone aren’t actually wiped from its memory. Instead, the files are only marked as deleted and invisible. The system will write data over those files in the future. You can later use specialized data recovery tool to scan the Android memory for deleted files and try to recover them.

Got any tips on what software?

"accidentally" wiped /system and factory reset, help!

I wanted a clean cyanogemod installation on my desire z so I followed this guy's advice:
For a clean install, just boot into recovery, format the /system partition (found under the Mounts and Storage menu) and then perform a Factory Reset/Data Wipe. After that, you are good to install CM and gapps. This does not erase your sdcard, so if any apps stored stuff on there, it will still be there unless you manually erase it.

I didn't think it through and restarted the phone thinking I'd use clockworkmod to reflash the cyanogenmod rom. When I turn it on now it just displays the green 'htc' text on white background, none of the buttons do anything.
I've still got adb etc installed from rooting a year ago, is there a way I can unscrew this up? A million thanks.
Edit: When I start it and go to the loader screen by holding down the optical button, it gives me 'bootloader' as an option but when I select it, it looks like it scans the SD, tells me there is no image and offers to start an update. I can see it with adb but can't get a shell, it says - exec '/system/bin/sh' failed: No such file or directory (2) -'. Is there a boot file I can push onto it?
Read one of THESE.
I believe adb push a ROM and gapps to /SD card.

It seemingly randomly booted in cwm recovery after about 30 on-offs and I loaded the cyanogen rom, not a satisfying fix but I'll take it. Thanks for your help.

The best way to wipe an S3 for sale... when the screen is blank (broken)

... and the touchscreen doesn't work?
I have cerberus installed, so was thinking:
Wipe with cerberus
Enter download mode
Flash stock rom with odin
Would this be enough? would any of my data remain?
Thanks
any ideas?
If flashing a stock FIRMWARE will not do the trick, perhaps a custom kernel will.. and if it still does not, then it may be a hardware problem

I am wondering whether the three steps I mentioned in my original post will completely wipe the phone
Can I:
Install a VNC app using adb, start it, use my pc to access apps/ wipe phone?
A wipe with cerberus should do the trick, also sd card wipe.. Then flash the new rom..
Should be good to go after that.

Here's what I've done so far:
- Used cerberus to "wipe SD card"
- Used cerberus to "wipe device memory"
I am now planning to reflash a stock rom in download mode, with ODIN
Question: Will I need to flash the stock recovery too? Or will this automatically get flashed when I flash the stock rom?
thanks

My main concern is now my personal data on the phone - does the cerberus factory reset remove all of this?
Or maybe I should do this:
As USB debugging is enabled, use ADB to do a wipe
Then flash stock rom (which will probably reset USB debugging to off (not sure about this))
+1 3473
Use adb to do a wipe on the phone.
adb shell dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p. (with "." a number corresponding to partition data and cache).
After that, go to Download mode with buttons and flash another firmware.
It seems that after doing the 'factory reset' with cerberus, usb debugging is now disabled as I cannot connect with ADB
does this mean the phone is sucessfully wiped?
Should I install the stock ROM now?

If you're running a custom recovery (which you certainly won't be if you flashed the stock ROM), you can check through ADB:
boot into recovery
connect your phone to the computer
"adb shell"
mount -t ext4 /dev/block/mmcblk0p12 /data
cd /data
If you booted the phone after doing the factory reset, /data will be populated. Use ls on /data/data and see if you recognise any folder names that belong to apps you downloaded off the Play Store. If there are some, then Cerberus probably didn't wipe /data. (Your internal SD card's contents can be found in /data/media if you also want to look there)
When you're done, umount /data
Unfortunately I can't use ADB because when I did the cerberus factory reset, I think it set 'usb debugging' to 'off'
I think cerberus successfully wiped everything - windows explorer tells me I have "10.6gb free of 11.1gb" on the phone
Also if I double click the phone, it tells me there are 181 Folders, 21 files, which in total amount to 1.08mb
Phone successfully wiped?

Probably yes, 1.08MB is close to nothing and shouldn't have any of your personal details.

ADB always works in recovery mode regardless of whether USB Debugging in Android proper is turned off; if you're running stock recovery, you get a shell as normal user (useless) and if you're running CWM/TWRP you get a shell as a root user

[Q] Help with decrypt storage screen

So this morning when I woke up, I went to charge my phone because it was out of juice. After charging it awhile, I turned it on again, only to be confronted with a screen that says "Type password to decrypt storage", and it gives me the option of making an emergency call or decrypt. I have read various forums, including one in the Nexus 7 area which describe people having this issue. My HTC had been running Venom One 4.3.0.
What I've tried/know so far:
1. I can reboot into recovery and TWRP v2.6.3.4 pops up just fine. However, it also asks for my password, which I can bypass by hitting cancel.
2. I have tried to factory reset, but after about 5 seconds, it says failed, during "Updating partition details"
3. I have tried to advanced wipe, but it will only let me wipe cache, and not data nor Dalvik cache.
4. I can't restore anything because nothing shows up under restore.
5. If I go to restore, the size of the various parts (data, system) seems right, but I can't back anything up. It always fails during "Updating partition details"
If anyone can be of any help, it would be greatly appreciated! I'm not super techy, but I'm willing to try whatever at this point. I'm pretty much resigned to losing all my data, which isn't a huge deal; I believe most of my stuff is backed up.
If someone can say definitively that I'm SOL, then let me know. At least I know I can move on. Some have suggested that this could be a hardware failure related to my flash memory, in which case, I don't think there's anything I can do (unless there is).
There is no work around for this...the storage is encrypted, only way around it is to format data and push a rom back to storage via adb and then reflash...
copy rom to where your adb files are, boot into twrp recovery run this command after you format your data partition...it will push the rom to the phone, may take awhile so be patient and you wont see any progress until it finishes.
adb push nameofrom.zip /sdcard/.

[Q] Backup / Restore

I used an app from the play store called root uninstaller, only after I used it and my phone buggered out did I read other users comments.
I noticed that if you install the app, when trying to use it if you click on an app to uninstall, you actually get the app listed before the one you clicked.
Now I've uninstalled an app I have no idea which, now I get a login screen, when I swipe the lock to unlock I get a message, something like "System UI has stopped responding" then locks itself again. (maybe I uninstalled System UI?)
I can turn the phone off, then start up into recovery mode, I get the following options.
reboot system now
apply update from ABD
aplly update from sdcard
apply update from cache
wipe data/factory reset (this doesn't reset the phone to original state, just wipes data/cache)
wipe cache partition
backup user data
restore user data
Now the thing is this is an unknown Chinese brand, I have a 2nd one that is still working.
How can I get this to work again?
Are both the phones rooted?
Are these stock recoveries or custom?
If custom recovery, you can take a clockwork mod backup of ok phone and install on non working phone.
If no custom recovery but rooted, then you can pull the system folders of both phones on pc and compare the folders for missing apps.
Then push missing app via adb.

Before the phone went downhill, yes it was rooted, the other phone isn't rooted but that is easily done.
I couldn't install the clockwork mod backup though on the phone that went down.
How do I pull the system folder off the broke phone? I can't get it past the boot up screen anymore.
The android on it is coreandroid. I hate it.
Install adb on your pc.
Get to know basic adb commands.
On the computer command prompt with the good phone connected, do
adb shell
su
cd /system
ls -al
This will list all apps in system folder.
They will be numerous.
Do the same for bad phone.
Comparing the files, you can identify the missing file.
---------- Post added at 09:17 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:14 PM ----------
ON the second Note , you can do
adb pull /system/ >c:\system1
This will pull all system files to the said folder in c drive.
Do the same for other phone
adb pull /system/ >c:\system2
Compare both the folders to find the missing file.
