I've tried flashing a couple of roms, but I get a failed message that says "failed to update binary in zip." What does this mean?
Please give some more info. I.E. what is your hboot? TWRP version?

Twrp 2.7.1.0 or twrp 2.7.1.0b? If it is just 2.7.1.0 that is most likely your issue. You need the modified twrp recovery from Captain Throwback. Also what roms are you flashing? Make sure they are for the new partition layout.

Just 2.7.1.0, I didn't even know there was a later version, I just downloaded the latest version from TW's website. I tried flashing Liquidsmooth's rom (3.1).

The one you need is not official through twrp. It's located in our wonderful friend Captain Throwback's thread since he was the one to modify it.

What hboot do you have? Do you have the supersu app installed? If you open it, it should ask you to update if it needs it.

Yes... If you have the Supersu app, just open it... If the binary is outdated, it will prompt out for asking you to update... If not, go to its settings to update...

I no longer have a laptop, can't use a tablet to do anything and the computers I do have access to will not let me install drivers to utilize adb or fast boot. I have 3.16 flashed to my phone and I am S-off, I tried flashing 2.3.x.x but the touchscreen won't work. I think it has to do with being made for 3.15 and need a PJ75IMG.zip for a later version of TWRP.
I already tried simply renaming the .IMG file but, surprise, that didn't work.

Yup you are indeed S-OFF the reason I said that is because that is the same thing that happens to folks that are S-ON it boots back to recovery

What version of TWRP are you currently on?
Sent from my HTC EVO 4G LTE
First off, confirm exactly what ROM you installed - I mean the actual link to the ROM itself.
Secondly, install a custom HBOOT - the stock HBOOTs, even when "UNLOCKED" can be stingy about allowing system to be written to, especially with a stock boot image.
And thirdly, please confirm what version of TWRP you are using. If it's not the latest, I recommend this one (updated to allow flashing KitKat ROMs, if you're so inclined at a future time).
I was on 2.1.8. I updated to latest, which I thought I was. And everything flashed. Now says 3.17. . . Thank guys.

what version of recovery, meaning there should be a version # 6.0.?.?
or are you getting a status 7? which means your recovery needs to be updated
you have rooted right?
just basic information im asking, but folks need to know
I'm sorry I always forget something when I'm asking a question on here. But yes I am rooted and it says my CWM-RECOVERY version is 5.5.0.4 if I need to update which version would I want or would you suggest going with TWRP? Answer to your other question it is saying (STATUS 7)

6.0.4.3 is the most recent version and you may have to look back a page or so, but in the General forum there is a thread titled CWM 6.0.4.3 touch recovery and there is a flashable file.
TWRP is fine too, but it depends on what else you may flash in the future. the 4.4 roms dont work with TWRP.
there is a TWRP thread also though in Original Development. some had been having problems with latest version, so you may want to go to the last page and read a bit.
but updating your recovery will solve your problem
have fun
id help out a little more, except i am at work and they may frown upon this if they catch me

I just flashed it this morning and did a restore. Was at stock and up to date before flashing. Using 2.7.0.0
I've been trying this method since TWRP went official on the S5 and it keeps telling me it's not supported. Same with GooManager and Flashify. I don't want to go the whole Odin route if these methods should work. I'm on Philz recovery but want to go to TWRP since I had that on my S3.
