My wife just got a Republic Wireless Moto E, and I'm thinking of doing the same. The RW model seems to be mostly identical to the other variants, but has a locked bootloader, so standard root methods are impossible. Are the any leads on a way of rooting the Moto E without unlocking the bootloader? I tried TowelRoot with several modstring combinations, and Pie Root, but they unsurprisingly did not succeed. I know (I think?) that the /system partition of the Moto E is not writable, so at best I ask for a temp root.
I should point out that I mainly want root for Xposed and Titanium Backup. Not super interested in tethering, and I understand RW's prohibition of it.
Also, the Android version is 4.4.4 (in case that wasn't obvious) and the model is XT1019.

I expected as much. So now I wonder: certain phones like the Galaxy S III can emergency boot from the SD card when bricked. Does anyone know if the Moto E can? That might open up a root possibility.

Samsung phones have unlocked bootloader by default hence they can boot from sd card.
So I guess the only hope is for someone to find a temp root exploit (or a bootloader exploit, but talk about impossible)... Which is unlikely since there is easy root for most Moto E users.

Wait, would the bootloader being locked or unlocked even matter in a hard brick? That's the state the S3 could recover from with SD booting.

I do not have a moto E actually but I do have a moto g and they are pretty much the same. Download it and try it, as it will do numerous compatibility tests to make sure it will work.

I tried Sunshine already, but it couldn't do the temp root.
So has there been any movement towards root on moto e RW?
I am also interested in this.
In my case, I want a large amount of app data to be on the SD card. I understand that I need to root to do this, but I can't figure out how to root my Republic Wireless Moto E with 4.4.4.
same results with sunshine as OP
Can someone please list the variants that cannot get the bootloader unlocked? I am having a problem deciding whether to buy US Cellular Variant or not. I wanna make sure I can unlock its bootloader first.
General info:
There will be a lot of discussion, do not follow untested tuts in this thread. It could cause you to brick your phone into a Cool paperweight.

Root- No Write/full access-Cant seem to uninstall system apps on Android 5.0?/5.1
Screenshot: Attached at bottom of KINGROOT APK(4.5) via One click root method working on my updated 5.1 lolipop xt1528.
KingRoot does not root your device, just allows for removal of pre installed software via kinguser. After uninstalling, it crashed my Google launcher app & was fixed via rebooting which caused my system to have to re-optimize all apps which took 5 minuets. Root access is denied. Autostart manager works
Unrootable, Locked bootloader, but excellent capability. I love 5.1 better. I wouldnt recommend this device for anonymous browsing (I like to use Tor as a VPN), torrenting, or sharing. But I love the battery (lasts all day without heavy gaming use), phone calls & txts, Browsing the web is good too. I love being able to take out my phone and say "Ok Google" to vocally search or open things (like cortana) and my phone talk back. As well as the easy-to Use feeling comes if you've expierienced 5.0 before, a little confusing if you've been stuck on <4.0.I feel comfortable with it & it fits in my pocket pretty well. I don't know how much radiation it throws off... I say 7/10 overall. No xposed, if your lucky to rebuild the APK & patch it you can do it.. 4g is awesome! & I'm happy I didn't go with a free phone. Although, i'll be getting one soon to play with.
Thank you, Thanks for reading, & Have a wonderful day! (ALL Useful info & credits to who said it will be added via a reserved spot below.)
LATEST Answers :SU-ME didnt work for me on 5.0, and even though KingRoot said i had root access, It wouldnt give it to anything or allow write access.... Also, I attempted to root 5.1 off the v4.1 apk. It said root strategy available-Gave me (nothing past words)root access-But caused a bunch of apps to continuously crash. (I'll try it again once i go through my dev settings, i also factory wiped it earlier). It said i could remove system apps, It couldnt though. I used the auto-start manager too (we'll see if that stuck). (pics below) Also, Anyone who provides any testing will get thanked & a name below.

Yep it is possible to root.
First download supersu.zip here-
https://download.chainfire.eu/696/SuperSU
Now install custom recovery on your device using adb and fastboot. (TWRP is preferred coz many reported cwn not working)
Once twrp is installed boot in recovery.
Then tap install and select the supersu.zip where u downloaded it.
Just flash it and tada!!
Reboot in system and your moto e with lollipop is rooted.
I rooted by same method.
#peace and hope it helped you.
The hardest part is unlocking the bootloader. Without that, it's impossible to root.
I wish I had seen this thread before I picked up this phone today. :/
As I did pick one up as something to play with and not necessarily just for custom roms, I'm not immediately returning it, but it's a strong possibility.

When I try installing twrp via fastboot I receive a preflash error. I have yet been able to boot into recovery., I just get a red triangle and "no command" . What am I doing incorrect?
I don't understand the recovery mode for this phone, I'm used to 4.0.4 lol. I'm not sure either. I thought I broke my system when I tried to adb flash twrp & found out you can't shut your phone off when its in recovery mode. (Also, you can't flash without unlocking the bootloader) DUH right?

You can't flash without an unlocked bootloader. The XT1528 isn't supported by Motorola for unlocking because its a Verizon phone. Verizon doesn't like giving out codes, and wouldn't even if you asked. I think unless someone can Dev the crap outta it, We're screwed XT1528 wise. But, I don't know much about anything lol. I'm still learning.

this is not possible on verizon version xt1528. bootloader is unlockable. will need an android 5 vulnerability to gain root which is the best the verizon version will ever get.
Most likely way to root this phone would be to use an app that has a Lollipop exploit, but they're getting harder according to this article:
http://www.androidpolice.com/2014/1...ew-modified-kernels-may-become-a-requirement/
Okay so now I have gone and picked up the AT&T XT 1527 version. I now have a XT 1528 I can test with. Question, should I go ahead and root the XT 1527? I am thinking about wiping everything off Verizon phone and installing Fedora on it, but if there are other suggesting, I now have a test sled that can be used. I am open to suggestions with the verizon phone, let me know what you all think.

I am using it on Reliance CDMA netowrk. When it was on 5.0.2, I could able to connect to 3G.
But After update to 5.1, I could not use 3G. Only call & sms working.
I have rooted xt1528 in android 5.1 to make modification in the system partition. Rooting works perfectly. but changes made to system partition revert backs to stock after reboot.
Could anyone help me to make permanent changes to /system/build.prop file?

Thanks for reporting root worked on your moto e, this is fairly new, Im waiting to see if others can repeat it, and whether it really does work. Have you tried some other apps that require root to see if they actually work with root?
For your specific /system/build.prop issue, some roms write that file from another location, /etc/build.prop or some other similar paths, so maybe need to find that file. Also you have to remount /system as read-write, assuming this worked otherwise there would be an error right away.
Usually I edit /system/build.prop files manually with terminal emulator app, then type these commands:
su (proper root needed)
mount -o rw,remount /system/build.prop
vi /system/build.prop ( may need to install busybox app)
Hi guys,
Just wondering if I can get root without unlocking the bootloader. Seems that I;m hearing that this isn't possible, which makes no sense. I know Verizon is Verizon when it comes to locking things down(They were even blocking free games on dumbphones back in the day so that you would have to buy them, even when the manufacturer included them for free), but it seems that gaining root access is completely different than flashing a new ROM. Am I correct here?
Also, would towelroot work for this phone? I know it's a nice simple solution, but I believe their claim is for phones manufactured before Jun '14.
Lastly, would a solution like Safestrap work here? It's what I used on my last phone (S3), when Verizon locked THAT down.
I know it is a battle fighting Verizon on this, and I know it takes time, I was just wondering if I am reading this right, or if I could root, but run the standard ROM, just with the extra access... Really, the phone is working so well that I just want better control for things like deleting/disabling/freezing stock apps and such.
Thanks for any help!! Sorry if this is in the wrong thread, seemed appropriate.
I am a user of H961N and it is also cannot be rooted.
I think root injection may be the answer.

Code:
D:\V10\LG_Root>Send_Command.exe \\.\COM8

SPECIAL COMMAND : ENTER, LEAVE
#dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p51 of=/data/media/0/system.img
FAIL

#
It keeps returning "FAIL" to me no matter what command i enter. I have asked about this in the thread in G4 forum but no one answer me, sad
I think that you may try it and it may work, as the above problem may not due to the phone but my computer.
Where did you get you system.img file? if you are using the one from the g4 it will not work. The file needs to be rooted for your device and then injected.

I'm curious, the 'Fail' just means that it fails to work, right? Phone works fine after that and all? No bricking or need to restore? If so, that's a safe risk. Thanks for the suggestion.

Good luck with this but I have a feeling that unless someone has an exploit laying around, you'll need an unlocked bootloader.

you need an unlocked bootloader

and adb & fastboot tool, not root
To install a custom recovery

That's how I usually would do it, the way it's described in the articles, since I still have to get my v10 from Far East can't test it.

I think if LG release a genuine ROM file, we could replace recovery parition with rooted one and flash it to our phone, that the only way open but LG hasn't released any ROM file yet.

Hi guys. I have bought Xperia Z Ultra C6833 a few days ago. and I have updated my phone to the latest version which is 14.6.A.1.236 via online update in settings and my bootloader is locked.
I have some question about rooting my device:
A) I have searched many topics about rooting this build number and i have found 2 out of which:
1) the first one is: http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z-ultra/development/ub-14-6-1-236-stock-ftf-root-t3270850 and my question is can I use your method in my phone? I mean should I unlock my bootloader or not? Does it create problem that I updated my phone via online update and without Flashtools?
2) another one is: http://forum.xda-developers.com/crossdevice-dev/sony/tool-prfcreator-easily-create-pre-t2859904 and my question is= is it safe I mean my phone will not be hurt? I mean first I download stock firmware ftf file and put it in the software and add SuperSU zip file and blend them or mix them together and finally flash the result with flashtools. can I use this method for rooting my device?
help me pleaseeee:angel::angel: tell me which one is better or which method is better. please please please:angel::angel:
1) if you want unlock bl should be work 2) in this method prfcreator output zip file you should flash with CWM or TWRP recovery so you need unlock bl or root phone.
if you want only root phone without unlock bl try kingroot app then replace supersu (with this tutorial) you can also flash zip file created with prfcreator after root and install XZDualRecovery.

hi
u just need to install IRoot on your pc and then run it to root your z u.....,after rebooting it says ' Root Successful '
but u dont have the root access yet................................,
u can find an App called kingroot ((u cant unistall it - like system apps )) open it and it will scan your device for root access.......then use it to root it
for the guys from in iran U have to use VPN to compele the process
Hi guys,
the kingroot app does work for me. But only in part. What I mean is yes it gives root access but for other apps like adaway it' doesn't. And the second part where we run the sh script with unzipped, mrw folder files. That didn't work for me. I get stuck on supersu update failed. Eventually I did find another way from one of our brothers here at xda and I did get root "YAY " but on one of the reboots I got into boot loop lol(ofcourse I don't blame him for it) . And now I am back here to flashing FTF to stock firm with no root. (again ?) I do have a fair idea about rooting a few of my devices but this baby just doesn't want to be mine.

Im in possession of a Xperia Z Ultra, with lollipop 5.1.1 14.6.A.1.236, how do i go about rooting it? Ive been reading along on the forums and internet, and the only thing i can come to is using this one click program Kingoroot (and the likes), but those dont seem to be installing (error code).
What's the best way rooting my device? The USB port is abit unreliable, im using the magnetic port to charge the device.

Using kingo root solved it for me.
I just have a quick question that I was hoping someone may be able to help me out with.
So, I was forced to switch to Metro PCS after my original phone was stolen, and I stupidly did not think to research about whether I could root the LG Stylo 4 prior to getting it. I have been a fan of the LG G series of phones for awhile so went ahead and got the LG Stylo 4 only to find out after the fact that LG has locked out the boot loader and is not allowing unlocks on it for the foreseeable future.
This really ticks me off, since this is my phone and I should be able to do what I want with it. I digress....
Anyways, of course I have tried everything just to get root, and that inlcudes KingoRoot, KingRoot, One Click Root etc....., I really dont care about installing a custom recovery or rom on the phone, I just want to have root access on it.
So, my question is, is it at all possible to flash a patched boot.img top the phone to unlock the bootloader? The reason I ask is after doing some research I came across a post that had a boot.img file that was patched from a Stylo 4 with an unlocked bootloader. I dont really know what can be done with boot.img file since as far as I know you need the unlock.bin file directly from LG to unlock it. I just wanted to see if anyone could clarify for me.
I doubt there is, but is there any way at all to get root on this phone without the bootloader being unlocked?
BTW- Here is the post where I found the flashed boot.img, I know its for Sprint but would it matter if my phone is carrier unlocked already?

Where, exactly, did this file come from? Please guys give the source for your information. A web link would be just fine. These little bits of Information without links to sources only add to the confusion for everyone.
Any Updates
So has anyone tried this on thier LM-Q710MS yet?
Has anyone successfully flashed a patched MetroPCS boot.img with a locked bootloader and managed to root this phone?
Bump... Have Stylo 4 Q710AL
Prepared to follow instructions at h t t p : / / androidbiits . com / root-sprint-lg-stylo-4-q710al-easily :
- I have s4patched_boot.img
- Setup modded LGUP and appropriate drivers
- enabled USB debugging, unlocked OEM
- Have Magisk Manager V 6.1.0
Everything is prepared to go and seems legit..
I just NEED someone to have done it, or to honestly be able to say it won't brick my only phone.
I'd roll the dice but I'm broke AF, please help us out here / Don't give up.

Android 9 Pie is coming for most Stylo 4 phones. But not for the MetrobyT-mobile version, LSQ710MS, which I have. It may be available later than the others.
LG has finally made the .kdz firmware available. Here is the link to the story from my Google news feed...

Hey all, was just reading over this thread. I don't believe a boot.img is capable of unlocking the bootloader. That would be the aboot, uboot, lk, etc images (device would only have one of the listed types). But, the kdz file shows some promise. Definitely gonna see what I can do with that.
