[Q] Device encryption - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 5

I am rooted and using twrp recovery. I go to encrypt my device and it goes to the android, but it just reboots once and turns back on. No sign of encryption. Any ideas here?

It's hard to address your question properly because you didn't provide any meaningful amount of information, in particular what TWRP and firmware versions you are using? You only left us a brief summary and didn't give any detailed description of your situation.
I saw your post several weeks ago, but went on to help someone else instead because of the crucial missing information.
Also, you can't have done much of a search (any search?) to see if your question had already asked and answered or you would have found this.
The relevant posts are mid thread where the recent encryption changes in Android and how TWRP is handling them are discussed. This will pertain to you vis a vis whether your version of TWRP support encryption or not.

I didn't know if it was twrp or some other issue. I'm not a programmer or developer.
I did search Google, but I didn't search xda because I'm using the app. Thank you for the information.

I'd be happy if the information helps solve your encryption issue.
As to your other comments, it doesn't matter whether you knew if it was a TWRP or other issue. Nor do you need to be a programmer or developer. It's just common sense that you need to provide abundant detail if you have any realistic expectation of effective help.
I have no idea what your profession or hobbies might be. But for a simple analogy, take a failed pie recipe. If you say, awww, my pie didn't turn out properly - and you would like help fixing that, rather than just sympathy.. then don't you need to provide details for someone to easily help you?
How could anyone help you without knowing something about the recipe or how you went about baking the pie? Without information, the best you could hope for is random guesses. You don't need to be a programmer or developer to know that abundant details would greatly increase your chances of being helped.
And almost any combination of keywords on Google would have located the TWRP support forum. And any search with both encryption and TWRP in the search finds the recent thread that I linked you to.
.

It's funny I've searched this site and scoured google, but I haven't seen a whole lot of info about issues encountered during the device encryption process. I've read that it slows the device down, but this was said about devices other and the S5...I've also heard that when encrypting, the screen goes black after a few seconds of the green android, which is the issue I've encountered....but, again, this was regarding a different device. It was in my search that I found this stale thread. Has anyone elkse had this problem?
Android is still running, there's a blue led on and my computer sees storage, but the screen stays black and doesn't respond to any keypresses. I've got twrp 286 and deviant's rom with the ob1 bl and modem/kernel. Next I tried it with a stock room, the only change I made before trying was installing twrp and reacquiring root after setting back to factory image via odin. I went in knowing that nandroids would be a problem after encryption because twrp wouldn't be able to unencrypt, but it shouldn't affect the actual encryption process or the device once unencrypting by entering the password at boot. Anyway,, I have been sitting waiting for 2 hours now and the blue led is on but nothing else.
Has anyone else had this happen to them? Any workarounds?
Thanks guys!

Any new contributors added please post in the thread, your first post will be your change log, which I can use to keep change log updated.
Please let's try to stay consistent in formatting - no need to paste the actual XDA or external link, right click highlighted text and add link that way.
Please don't edit the table of contents box in the very beginning of the doc, it will break the links in the OP of this thread.
Let's make sure we only use red text for warnings and the important information that NEEDS to be read.
Clicking insert at the top gives us the ability to add in pictures, links, drawing, etc.. I am not opposed as long as it doesn't take up too much space and isn't confusing.
You CAN create separate docs if you think that posting here would be too difficult - just make sure when you are done with your new doc you click "sharing" in the top right, make it accessible to anyone with a link, but NOT with editing rights! Let's not use other docs unless it is going to be a VERY robust document with images and embedded youtube videos, etc.
You will see at the very end of the doc is an "expanded" version. I put a bookmark in front of each line(insert>bookmark), and then I highlight the text, insert>link and then click the bookmarks tab - choose the text that matches what you are bookmarking.. boom, done.
Easy sharing BBCode links for the Bible.doc and for this thread.

And I'm hoping if the noobies(lol, love the term btw) think there is something we can clarify(that actually would help), we can make the bible even better..
Any other sections you or anyone else can think of? I'm wondering about ways to link to other useful threads - even threads that are closed like the "issues with ICS thread" I had may be useful.. maybe a troubleshooting section perhaps? A misc resources section?
I think forum members will like that they can help with suggestions and hopefully see a useful and well organized final product..

True, but if we find the answer to their issue, and it is common ENOUGH to be included, we can link directly to the post that fixes it, whether in this thread, or somewhere else.. no, we can't fix EVERY problem, but there are some standard ones that may be useful.. for example, what remix had to do to flash the RUU when his phone wouldn't accept a recovery - we could provide a few different links for anything useful like that for people having issues with the leak..
At the very least that was why I made it a Troubleshooting/Miscellaneous section, perhaps my closed thread on ICS issues may help someone out, even tho it is closed we can link to it.. or any other thread that has been archived but may be useful?
I'm kinda just thinking out loud here, trying to see what bases we can cover..

Sure, there are a few that are like that, but I've dealt with many I like that are pretty sharp, things really are just hard to find at this point - or at least till this point hopefully.
If we give a lazy noob this thread we've already put a ton of time into and he wants more, then I can tell him to get *(#$ with a good conscience. But this should be great for people who aren't noobs, but might be overwhelmed - I remember I was in the beginning, trying to figure out s-off and this and that.. and I was never a noob!(lies.)
What is S-Off?
Well allow me to explain:
In their devices, HTC have installed a sort of security check whose level is determined by S-OFF/S-ON. Essentially, this security level is a flag stored on the device’s radio that checks signature images for any firmware before it is allowed to be written to system memory. This hinders using any custom ROMs, splash images, recovery etc., and also restricts access to the NAND flash memory. However, when security level is set to S-OFF, the signature check is bypassed, allowing a user to upload custom firmware images, unsigned boot, recovery, splash and HBOOT images, as well as official firmware that has been modified, this enabling maximum customization of your HTC Android device.
Furthermore, S-OFF also reduces restrictions on accessing the NAND flash memory on the device, allowing all partitions (including /system) to be mounted in write mode while the operating system is booted.
In simpler terms: s stands for security on and off being it's current status, on restricting your ability to write to certain partitions of the system, example: hboot. Also it usually restricts access to flash kernels while s-on but recoveries such as 4EXT recovery have the ability to bypass this while s-on, hence giving you the ability to flash full custom roms without the need of s-off.
S-Off on the other hand gives you practically full access to system partitions, enabling you to flash radios, hboots, just about everything. It also gives you the option to sim unlock your amaze for free (see general forum), gives you options as well to unbrick your device should you have a slip up while trying to flash a rom/mods to your device(search for the unbricking project in the dev forum).
How to obtain s-off? See JuopunutBear's s-off method in the dev section, super-cid is also recommended if you're a rom flasher who likes to test roms that may not be for your specific device, difference being T-Mobile, Telus and Wind versions of the Amaze 4G.

When linking... There shouldn't be a reason why the links have to be listed (i.e. when giving rom links). If you see the first couple of GB roms, u will see I made hyperlinks, but whoever finished it did it differently. We should try to keep this organized and in similar formats from user to user, to make it clean and easier to read. Imho.

I know, I finished fixing the format of the ics roms that were listed.. some of it was a rush job, but at least most of the info is there until we perfect the format.

We will likely need direction from this point on - someone asked about mobilicity carrier(VIA COMMENT in DOC) and someone else supplied the link, I updated thread-- this is a good way to keep it going.
Productive comments are welcome, as it says in the first post- highlight what you want, click insert then comment to leave us something helpful.. otherwise I hope it is helping people out(I don't see glacierguy, nightmare's, or my thanks button getting super mashed..?)
Anyways, it will never be complete, but we will need some direction to move forward and add more!
Tip for better battery
Current Widget
This is a free app available on the play store, there may be other apps that do the same thing.
See what is causing the most drain while you are actually USING the phone(as opposed to when screen is off- hint, use betterbatterystats for that)..
Steps to see which apps are killing your battery- do this when you get higher than average drain(delete previous log file called currentwidget.log in root of SD)
Put the widget on one of your homescreens, it will go to options screen..
An update interval of 60 seconds should be acceptable
Check(enable) the log file
Go into log options>check(enable) log applications
Use your phone as normal for a few days.. or when you've noticed worse drain.
Go back into the program and click log actions>analyze log,>top processes-- this shows you which app processes are using how much current - for example com.android.chrome(the google chrome app) was using 513MaH(milliampere-hour) - if you have the stock 1730mah battery that means that app alone could kill your battery in a little over 3 hours..
Once you have a list of which apps are causing the most drain turn off logging- that app itself will cause SOME drain, but it is worth using just to find out what is killing your phone!
This has been added to the BATTERY TRICKS section of the original google doc!

A way to check if any app has exploited 'Exynos Mem Bug'

First, I just finished reading 50 pages of Chainfire's thread and my eyes have had it. So I have tried to find the answer myself. I'm also posting it here as the hacking thread says "no noobs" so if this isn't the place, please move it for me.
I simply want to know, in lieu of the fact that a lot of apps got updated like crazy after this bug was discovered, I'm thinking that these fixes might be a waste of time for a lot of us as we may have been comprimised already and simply checking SuperSU won't help (apparently).
So my question is, is there a way to 'scan' to see if any app is using the exploit? If not what can be done? ie. remove all apps and reset phone and leave it bare, and change all email passwords etc, until Samsung fixes this huge problem?
Thanks
perhaps some antivirus apps will check this vulnerability soon

You misunderstood, I already know I'm affected. I'm looking for a way to see if any playstore apps have taken advantage of the exploit. I already have Chainfire's fix installed. I'm worried that somebody has already used the expoit. All my apps are from playstore but that doesn't convince me that all playstore devs are "ok". So I want to know if there's a way to see if any app I had already installed before I installed Chainfire's fix is/was taking advantage of the exploit.
Thanks

[Q] advertisement

I sometimes get a notification which tells me about various applications that can be downloaded, I find these notifications extremely annoying, not only because I hate advertisements and put a lot of effort into stopping then on my desktop PC which I am very experienced with, but on the HTC one, when I get one of these notifications it uses the default notification sound, which makes me think I have a text message (sometimes at ridiculous times of the day) but instead it's telling me about star cam or some other crappy app. In this respect the advertisements are worse than on my desktop PC, as I never turn the mobile off in case I am being contacted, so the possibility of getting these annoying notifications is 24/7.
I don't know why, but I never had this problem on my htc desire HD, or the tytn 1 and tytn 2, only my htc one.
I need to stop these advertisments! I have tried going into "App info" for google play store to disable "show notification" but I don't seem to be able to find it except for "notify me about updates to apps i've downloaded" now this doesn't seem like it, because that only counts for apps I already have and only for updates. My problem is for notifications about apps I never had, also the app updates notification never seems to make a sound (Which is good) but this other notification uses the default notification sound as I stated before.
I have come across various apps that supposedly stop ads, but I don't want to get my phones resources bogged down with apps that may or may not do what I want and might not even work anyway, but I need some help please!

sigh.. always someone suggests google. By that statement this website could not exist at all, everything could be googled, the whole point of a forum is a more comprehensive and interactive 'forum' with which to ask questions and get detailed answers.
as I said.. I already know about adaway and other apps which stop ads. I have already done a "simple search"
https://www.google.co.uk/#q=android+play+store+app+advertisements&spell=1+
first page 10/10 all results come back with different apps you can download. None of them specify this particular problem and may or may not be generic ad removers.
Clue: description of number 1 app result :
The Google AdSense app provides an easy way to access key data from your AdSense and AdMob account. Access reporting features anywhere, directly from your mobile phone. The first version of the app gives you access to: the key earnings information (that are now also accessible via widget), top custom and URL channels, ad units and sites reports, payment alerts.

It was already clearly established in one of my posts that I did in fact do research, that's also a fact, please refer to the above post. Before coming here I already checked the first 10-20 links which were all apps.
Obviously research yields results eventually, which is why I already tried that first and posting here is an extension of that and also another method of "research" which by the way is always my last resort, not because I don't like forums, because I do, but I always do my best to avoid the obnoxious and repetitive "google it" responses you get, even when it's obviously not valid... and that's a fact too.
I think that these aren't Google ads... This happened to me before after installing a app. I don't remember what app it was but the app was sending me ads for crappy ads... Check the apps you installed since you started getting these notifications

Venom 3.01 Trouble with SMS

I can't post directly to the Venom site since I don't have 10 posts so I'll post it here.
I ended up downgrading back to Venom 2.5 because there appears to be an issue with other programs being able to send SMS messages. The question was posted here but appears to have been overlooked. While noticeable for Tasker, it also poses a problem for Pebble users as well as Google Glass (don't know if anyone else uses these but if a dev needs help testing with these two devices I'd be glad to). I'm not sure where the coding issue is but given the applications it's affecting I'd presume it's somewhere in the passing of the information through the broadcast. Please note that I've tried using different default SMS app and it did not make a difference.
Please let me know if I can help in any way for this (I can provide tasker and pebble logs)
You probably sshould just send a direct message to the dev. Making a thread isn't going to do anything.

[Q] Capture Stylus hover events before they get to apps

I'm trying to work with a custom build of Android based on KitKat to incorporate a stylus, copying some of the functionality (though not code) from Samsung which sells Android-with-stylus builds for e.g. the Note 3. I'm not including details of the specific device because right now I am working on a custom dev device and my aim is to write code which is generic enough to be usable from any Android (based on KitKat). The build (written by others) already incorporates drivers and sends stylus events correctly as motion events etc. Programming at the app level I can receive onHover, ontouch, onClick etc
The specific functionality I am trying to achieve is to pick up a stylus-button-click while hovering. It's perfectly possible to do this in any app, using an onGenericMotion Listener.
However, I want to make my "stylus-action" have system-wide effect - so that anywhere (in any other app, or in the launcher or whatever) I will pick up the event (prior to any other app) and bring up my custom menu. (just like AirCommand in Samsung Note 3) I guess in my custom Android this would then make that particular action somewhat protected or unusable for other users, but I'm ok with that.
In older Android (prior to ICS) you could try something by putting up a System Overlay (i.e in regular app code, without hacking the ROM at all), but this is no longer possible.
This is not an attempt to tapjack or whatever, I understand why this functionality has been removed from the domain of the regular programmer, and I don't want to regress my ROM back to pre-ICS behaviour by allowing the System Overlay hack. Now I am programming the system (if my change is good enough I'd like to submit it back to AOSP) so I would like to know the best method to address this. Since Samsung have already done this, it must be legal (using legal in the terms of "Android will allow it"), and I want to do it right.
Is it possible to write something similar to the System Overlay when you are running from a system service? Or is there a good choke-point to capture events before they are broadcast to the current running apps?
I was looking at (sorry, not allowed to post links) AndroidXRef /frameworks/base/core/java/android/view/View.java specifically in the function dispatchHoverEvent() which looks like a promising place. My naive idea is that I would place code here checking the MotionEvent to see if the button is pressed and if it is, don't call any listeners and instead call my little menu app (or broadcast a custom message, or something anyway). However, I've never written code on the ROM level before (LOTS of experience writing app code) so I don't know if this is a really bad point or a good point to add in code. Should I be putting things at a higher level or a lower one? Will this capture all events or not? Is it all just trial and error?
If this is the wrong place to ask questions like this, please tell me where on XDA I should be asking it. If it's the right place - please answer
Thanks

The guy above me is a ****. I stumbled across this post looking for something completely unrelated (title interested me). Five words in I knew this was something completely out of my league, but I still read the entire post. If I may offer you some probably useless advice, I would talk to the devs in the note forums. The only problem I could see is that the AOSP guys don't have this function in their roms because it's locked up Samsung code and the guys modding the stock roms leave it alone for the same reason. I could also be completely wrong. Like I said completely out of my league.
