To give a little background info: I'm complete noob as far as android is concerned and I just bought moto e to get me started with android world.
I don't know about others but I certainly feel overwhelmed by shear magnitude of this world and feel little lost >.>
So, put it in one line, I wold like to get help from experts and maybe other people who also bought this phone or something similar to make my life little easier as going all gung ho in app store doesn't seem like a good approach to me, especially with low bandwidth net I've.
As I mentioned, this is my first Android phone and I would like to know about the ''free'' apps which I should install for following things.
Protection from virus/spyware/theft?
File browser if it can extend the capacity of default browsing system.
Web browser which performs well on low bandwidth but is also decent.
Social networking apps (I've already installed Whatsapp as it was known to even gadget challenged person like me)
Ebook and PDF file reader.
Caller ID and call as well as voice recorder.
Those reviewers were not kidding when they said camera sucked on this phone, so if there any app to make it better/more useful?
App for sketching and drawing.
App for navigation (if there is need)
Small time games like racing and pool/snooker etc. I'm not really a game seaway so things on youtube looked too much for me .-.
Any other useful recommendations are welcome as well.
PS:
I did look for some other thread like this but I didn't find one so forgive me if this doesn't really live up to the forum standards, and feel free to delete/move it, if it doesn't. I apologize in advance.
Cheers!

First of all you are posting in wrong section and Second as you are a newbie try relaxing a bit no one will become Einstein in one day and Thirdly welcome to the android community.
And You just cant ask away everything as this is not a place for app advicing you got playstore for that and free paid apps you know how to get them and dont ask about them as it is not allowed [i personally disagree as its just skipping money from wrong people]
and please use "search" thing before you ask

Sorry about the section thingy, I saw the ''theme and app'' thing on the section header(?) so thought this would be the right place to go.
About the playstore, I'm browsing it, but its kind of difficult to separate whats useful from what not (being a newbie and all plus slow net kind of makes it difficult to try out everything, sorry if that sounds like an excuse). I guess, I was just looking for people who already use these and suggest the best.
I'm browsing the thread you linked so thank you for that.

Actually, anything that has human factor involved is a security risk, Linux or not. While Android OS itself might be very well secured, what you install on it makes world of difference (hence my reluctance), depending on sources. It is true that I'm noob to android gadgets, I'm very well familiar with Linux as that is what I use more than 90% of the time. On the Linux forum I'm frequent at, this topic usually causes ton of debate and after few good points it end with exactly what you said, so I wont fan that fire.lol Just wanted to know if there is one. And by the way, Virus=/=malware, virus is just one of the many forms of Malware. And even Linux is not ''that'' secure/immune from latter, its just less of a riped fruit to pluck, something contrary to its child; Android and hence the question.
When I said making cam better/more useful, it was more aimed at making its stock camera UI/app (w/e you may call it) a little more useful by adding more quality/functions or simply make came more easier to use with different UI, this has no bearings on camera hardware in question. I do apologize for wording this wrong in initial post though.
I'll install all your other suggestions, thank you very much for your patience. I appreciate it!

The only way you can be affected by a malware is if you install an infected/malicious app. If you stick with Play Store, the chances for that are minimal. Do not download apps from anywhere else and let Google verify it for you. Still if you're concerned there are plenty of antivirus apps on Play Store, use search button.
Also, try and read the description of an app before you install, see if it has the features you need. The ratings and reviews also help. Thats how learned it when I bought my first Android.
As for the camera UI, trust me, this is one of the best camera apps amongst stock ones. Its clean, simple and efficient. Still, if you wish to check some more, there are plenty on play store. You can try those. Camera 360, Perfectly Clear, for example. They will change the UI and have some cool after effects to apply.
@.glen First and foremost a warm welcome to the Droidland...
Antivirus> Not required at all/Avast
File Browser> ES File Explorer/Astro File Manager
Web Browser on low b/w> Opera Mini/UCBrowser
Video player> MX Player
These are the only apps available for your purpose and free...
No app will make your camera better...
Also try Nova Launcher...
Games> Angry Birds, Temple Run2, Subway Surfers, Jetpack Joyride, SSG2, Hill Climb Racing, Into The Dead, Cut The Rope2 to name a few...
Btw don't worry, we all were n00b at first...
But don't get overwhelmed, we're happy to help...
BTW, don't forget to click the Thanks button below my post if I helped ya... :good:

Welcome to the fabulous world of android!:highfive:
I've compiled a list of apps along with their respective play store links. I hope you'd find them useful.
My two cents worth:-
File browser: I use CyanogenMod File Manager. Root Explorer(Paid), ES File Explorer, etc are decent options.
Web browser: Dolphin Browser-It supports flash. If you want to conserve data you might look into Opera Mini
Ebook and PDF file reader: Moon Plus Reader-IMHO this is the best app for this purpose. Free and Paid options are available
Communication: Viber is a good option. I prefer it over LINE,WE chat, etc
Some other apps I think you should have:-
For optimizing RAM usage/hibernating apps: Greenify
Ad-blocking: AdblockPlus or Adaway(needs root). For more info, look here.
Launcher: Nova Launcher
Media Player: MX Player-a must have!
App Backup:TitaniumBackup(needs root) or Helium
Thank you all! I've taken most of the suggestions and it has indeed made my life easier :3

Are there others of you out there that would appreciate a ROM that is a phone / PDA first and lotsa colorful graphics left to a minimum?
Here's why I ask. I've recently been looking at the reviews of the new HTC PURE (AT&T.) Looking at its TF3D screens my first reaction was, "I dig the blue theme, but man those mono color sliders sure look boring! The ROMs at XDA sure have better graphics!"
That was, however - a short lived reaction. . . .
We have a stock AT&T FUZE here in the house, and as everyone knows its theme is gray, gray, and more gray - boring.
However -
When a text message or email comes in, the little bright orange notification circles that pop up on the sliders are quite noticeable and stick out like a sore thumb. Some may consider this ugly, but it IS functional.
Once the modding stops and life restarts, these are, after all phone / PDAs. And in a busy life full of varying light conditions, the boring AT&T themes seem more useful than many cooked ROMs. Their basic two toned themes make it easier and faster to interact with the phone while on the go. The alerts are not distracted by the multicolors all over the interface.
I really do not like the features, bloat, and outdated stock AT&T ROM for the FUZE. And I really appreciate the great ROMs here on XDA and prefer them.
I'm wondering if there are others like me out there and a chef willing to make a go at a simple two toned ROM with bold alerts?
Feedback?

looking on the ROM page I see many stock like or simple ROMS. Have you tried any of those? To me the idea behind cooked ROMS is to be different from the ones who use stock ROMS. I personally during a day go from my car to my office to a warehouse to my car then out to lunch at many different places then back to my office and then home as well as stores and shopping and have not had an interaction issue with a single ROM I have tried. Furthermore all ROMS put a notification icon on the task bar as well when you have mail or messages. For me functionality has never been an issue. What I would like is a more personal way to ad or remove apps I never use such as all the multimedia and messaging crap.
Try Timolol's ROMs as bare and boring as they can be but with great speed.
And this topic is not worth a new thread.
Please be careful next time you start a new thread.
yeah i would use timolols if ur interested in a bare looking and yet functional rom.
I concur with more function over looks
It would be nice to see more roms that are naked or use UC to put in the programs you want or exclude those that you may not need.
I'll take a look at Timolol's
sa-10 has a good idea with choice through UC.
One thing I like with many ROMs is the choice to run with TF3D or Titanuim baked into the same ROM. I was just wondering if there would be much popular support for an option to run with a very basic theme.
I don't dispute Solarenemy68's expereinces day to day. But for me, I have become vision impaired. I didn't want to make this thread about me or a disability, so I thought I'd see if other folks would find a simple to see, functional ROM useful.

would it not be an idea to talk to an moderator instead of saying this things that can be dually explained ?
PS: maybe not the right timing but it would be a good idea to let chefs make a bare rom and just add the stuff through UC which one can download and unpack on a sd-card ?
I don't mind a MOD judging me as I was not Wrong !
I can't stand baseless acquisitions !
And will defend myself.
And UC on SD card would be good but then the ROM of one chef would not be different from anothers which would make things repatitive.
Plus UC will take so long to install so many apps and things.
People will have different demands and many demands for custom UC.
But maybe it could be tried by upcoming chefs.
Just PM'd two MODs Captain_throwback and the-equinoxe two look into the matter.
I will agree with whatever they will say.
No offense was taken.
Many times how I express myself in text is misunderstood as text doesn't allow for tone of voice, pauses, voice inflectoin etc.
So, Im not one to cast stones on this. No harm, no foul.
That said, I didn't post this thread to attract trouble or controversy.
I simply wished to make a request where chefs and patrons could take note and chime in if they like.
Yes, this was posted selfishly seekling a ROM a bit more user friendly to my disability. But before posting I tried to phrase things inclusively with the idea others might also like such a ROM for whatever reason.
Just a request, wondering if others feel they would benefit too.
No trouble intended.

glad to hear that.
you don't need to be sorry OP.
you are at no fault
glad to see you 2 get along now all of a sudden
donno what happend but it is gifted by the gods
??
I was never against the OP !
This thread seems to be a fair request, imo.
That being said, it's always a good idea to look at the ROM threads before posting, to see which ROM meets your needs. If you don't see one, perhaps starting a thread like this gives the OP an opportunity to get people's opinions. This isn't one of those "which ROM is the best" threads, which serve no real purpose, as the answer to that question is quite subjective.
I'm glad to see that the disagreement has been worked out.
I'm also not one for "pretty over functional" ROMs, though don't get me wrong - I like pretty. But I also like having the latest features/ports working on my device (i.e. Manila 2.5).
[self-plug]
I'm actually close to (FINALLY) releasing my own ROM, which I'm *trying* to keep simple and functional (it's tough though, with so many goodies out there). My philosophy is to install as many apps as possible via CAB, rather than cooking in, which not only keeps the \Windows folder cleaner, but allows the end-user to uninstall anything they don't like or won't use. I actually created the placeholder for my ROM 2 months ago, and it's just now finally getting to the point of completion (several ports and hundreds of builds later). Maybe you'll want to check it out, in addition to the other suggestions offered here.
[/self-plug]
Anyway, just make sure everyone keeps respecting each other here in the forum. We just here to help each other. No reason to scold anyone for starting a thread. If it shouldn't be here, the Mods will take care of it.
Yes, it would be great to have a basic ROM, all,ost all the other ones are overloaded with things most people don't need...
You then could upload a package with CABS so that people can install only the things they want.
It would be great indeed...

It all depends. If you're talking about an app that is located in \program files, it doesn't matter at all how it got there. Apps that appear in rom (in the \windows folder) can work much better when cooked in (voice command comes to mind).
I would love to have a clean ROM. I have acculmulated most of the Software that I won't already in CABs. I have found a lot of really nice ROMs out there but say in 1 I don't like this feature, or in another, I don't like that. I wouldn't mind having just a ROM cooked WinMo 6.5.#, a good radio with only Titanium setup to work with my Fuze on ATT and I can probley do the rest. I don't generally run Manila and the only HTC specific programs i really like are the HTCcalculator and the HTC Comm Manager.
So, new to this game, but a reasonably good tech head by trade. I didn't see any information outlining the differences between the available GTab ROMs in an apples to apples sort of way. Does anything like that exist currently? If not, is this something the community would be interested in brainstorming in a Google Doc or something? I'm happy to get things rolling if so.
Okay, so, this might be stupid, or a total waste of time, but what the heck:
https(colon,slash,slash)spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0Au8YYie-Ky7kdDNQRG8zN09xYnQ2NTVvOXY1ZTFtMXc&hl=en&authkey=CJC3j5oC
I went ahead and started working up a spreadsheet. Feel free to go in and start editing, adding important features, correcting, or whatever else. If someone else has beaten me to this, just say so.
I actually think it is an awesome idea and should help a lot of people decide what ROM they want to use. I have had my GTab since Christmas and have flashed mine over 20 times. I have tried all of the ROMs available on these forums multiple times and I don't think I would have needed to if a spreadsheet like this was in place earlier.
Okay, I think I seeded the spreadsheet with as much information as I can based on the various ROM threads. It'll be up to the community to help fill in some of the remaining gaps and such. And feel free to add in new feature checkpoints as well that users would find relevant. I'll keep curating the document to keep it consistent, and will fill in more once I actually have my G-Tablet in hand.
Features, add features that we could us, so those of us who want a rom that performs the tasks we want can see which one best suits us.
just some egs
bluetooth gps support
usb gps support (dont think this will be possible till hc is availabe)
usb g3 support
proxy support
external or bt keyboard and mouse support

Neither stupid nor a waste of time: I have been wanting to do something similar for a while - decide what/whether to upgrade my TNTLite 2.2 install to, I just haven't found the time or energy.
Your spreadsheet is very helpful. You should start a thread for it in the 'G Tablet Android Development' forum and see if you can get it stickied: I'll bet a LOT of other people will find it useful too. Maybe the various developers will chime in and help you fill in the blanks.
*thumbs up!*
I for one thank you for your time and effort. I am waiting on my Gtab to be delivered and am trying to decide which ROM to use. With this spreadsheet I can see the pros/cons of the major players at a glance. I think I will go with Vega.

999pings, thanks, I'll start a second thread once I have the requisite posts to do so in the Developer forum. I was sort of torn what the right place was to post this to begin with. Mods, feel free to merge the threads if necessary once I get the second one going.
Yeah thanks this would be helpful. It's always easier to have a side-by-side comparison than having to read through a long list of change logs and hundreds of pages of comments on what works and what doesn't. I too am waiting for my tablet to come in the mail and deciding which ROM to go with. I was basing my decision on popularity and that award going to TnT based on thread activity. Of course that doesn't always mean it's the best choice. I'd like to see this spreadsheet take shape in the next few days or so
Perhaps you can model yours after one that SimonNWalker here at XDA did:

Something along those lines would be nice once I have the data put together from everyone. Likewise, it'd be nice to find a wiki for it to live on, some place that it could continue to be maintained over time. Ideally something like this can take off in a way that it wouldn't need me (or any single person) to constantly curate it.

I don't know much about it, but there is Wiki functionality within XDA if this gains popularity. The spreadsheet/chart can definitely grow over time especially when Honeycomb comes out. There will be many more flavors of ROMs being released.

Oh, fantastic. That'll do great. I'll check into porting the stuff over to that once things fill in. Loves me some wiki action.

I agree, excellent idea. Thanks for taking the time to do this!
I was about to embark upon getting VPN access working using TNTLite, now I know that I can switch to Vegan if it gets too complicated.
Here is the link since I thing the OP could not post it up

Yeah, thanks. Forums require a minimum of 8 posts to include links. I just joined, so had to fake it a little, heh.
Thankyou TheQuicksilver!!
Sticky??
I suggest adding a column for stock TNT, and maybe even 1 for stock+enhancement?
That would be helpful for those trying to decide to stay stock or not.

Okay, so, this might be stupid, or a total waste of time, but what the heck:

I went ahead and started working up a spreadsheet. Feel free to go in and start editing, adding important features, correcting, or whatever else. If someone else has beaten me to this, just say so.

Brand new to the GTab.. Picking a ROM and rooting tonight. This resource helps immensely! Thanks!
Just wanted to say thanks for this. This would be great to have as a "sticky" so we don't have to search for it, and for new owners to see at the top of the page.
Does anyone know of an android launcher which is like the new Nokia N9?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LphiRFvd40I&feature=related
It just seems like a nice fast way to get around the things you do most often and would be interesting to try it.
Thanks in advance..

1+................
Please! Make it so.
Willing to pay for a launcher that would look and behave like the N9 launcher.
it's so awesome
I would too be willing to pay for an android launcher working the same way as Nokia N9.
It would be great!
i have a couple comments on that.
firstly, being a galaxy S user, and having played with the Nokia N9, i can say that my phone, older than the N9, is far smoother and more responsive. Secondly, Meego is a bastardization of Android. The similarities are many, but very few characteristics of Meego measure up to the brilliance of Android.
secondly, the failings of Meego aside, the multitasking in the clip is certainly interesting. However I'm not sure i like the dependence on the side swipe, and the dedication of homescreens to open apps and drawer without folder functionality. It *looks* pretty good, but function-wise, i'm pretty certain that Android would piss me off less.
I like N9 idea too.Android ICS card and swipe would be a nice match.
have you looked at wave launcher which gives you webos up gesture?
That's definitely possible in Android.not sure developers want to develop.
This could be a money maker . . . I'd buy it
An enthusiastic +1 to this idea. I would love to see a project like this realized and I think that this N9-styled idea could be a solid money maker for the right developer. SPB made a killing with their mobile shells, right?
Also, think of all the poor souls stuck with no applications over at Nokia--this could give them enough familiarity and confidence to break their limiting patterns. It's really a mission of mercy.
If anyone has an idea of actions that we could take to move this idea along, or if anyone knows of any progress being made along these lines, please let me know or let us know on the forum.
Infinite flexibility shows that ICS can be whatever devs make of it.
--Me
I know I am a new poster and fairly new member to XDA but that is mainly because I can read and have never really had the need to post anything. One thing that I have noticed is that ROMs are very sporadically placed throughout the forum and I think a lot of the mundane "What ROM should I use if I..." threads could be eliminated if a repository of sorts was created for them with feature list, performance eval, and battery eval.
Now I am not an expert by any means. I have played with a few ROMs trying to find one that has everything I want (yet to find) and I know I would love such a resource.
For now I am only looking at developing this for the Galaxy SII SGH-I777. I would need input from users of other devices/ROMs to supply information to expand it beyond that.
So my questions are: Would this be worthwhile? Does one already exist that I just haven't been able to find? Given the first two answers are yes and no, what specific features would you like to see in it? ROM suggestions would also be welcome as I know I don't know them all. I will gladly test them for the data myself but any extra help would be appreciated.
Thanks!
IMO, i dont think this is necessary. Most roms (at least right now) dont vary much with features. I think devs hit a ceiling with GB roms. You can create a matrix that illustrates battery life between all the roms but even thats a bit useless because battery life differs for everyone.
this is just my thought on this subject.
now that i think of it, someone did this for the captivate section and I dont believe it was used much.
Thanks!

The lack of variety was something I noticed between a few of the ROMs I tested. I am still in the process though as I haven't had my SII for long. I was really hoping that there was more than what I've seen. I am a programmer but basically a web, iOS (only because my job trained me and paid for me to learn it for them), and database programmer. I know that I never recreate the wheel and always make sure that my programs have something that makes it unique.
I'm not saying that the devs around here aren't doing a good job. It is great that people put in the effort whether it be for their own use and they have just shared it or if they did it for the sole purpose of spreading their talents I think its great.
That said, I appreciate your input and $0.02! I would hate to start working on it and find that it was a waste of time! I do have to admit though that I was really hoping to be able to do something to help with the "Which ROM..." posts
Hi, does anyone have a list of safe to remove bloatware for the Galaxy Mega (SPH-L600)? Thanks.
Do you know what's the meaning of bloatware in the first place? Then, you sir just answered your own question.

If you're having a bad day, don't take it out on me. Post something useful next time. I'm looking to clear as much sprint/samsung apps as I can & trying to find a safe remove list.
No, I didn't have a bad day but I was trying to be honest. You see, you asked a list of safe to remove bloatware in Samsung phone, to tell you the truth the TouchWiz itself is a bloatware and that vary for different people. For me even the stock browser is a bloatware, why would you remove any bloatware at the first place. Do you mean you prefer to use a stock Google app instead such as Notes over S-Note or Chrome over stock browser. Running a pure Android is your best bet to describe a bloatware-free ROM/firmware. Now, why would you take it our on me instead? You wish to remove bloatware but don't have the slightess idea what system apps are bloating your phone then you sir better don't do any god-damn modifications on your phone. Have a nice day!
Knowledge
I'd like to learn how to do goddamn phone modification. I own this device with great potential that, if I'm correct, has been choked off by the service providers etc. for their financial benefit. That's bull.... At the risk of getting an intellectual ass kicking for ignorance, what is a good method for learning about these subjects, what resources are available for study. Please share your wisdom. I'm sure I'm mistaken but it seems your superior knowledge over another gave you the right to be a ****, a **** void of useful information. If the questions are beneath you and waste your time ignore them. I'm wanting to gain knowledge, ignorance, contrary to the "is bliss" school of thought, sucks.
Actually what I was aiming for was to remove as many apps as possible without bricking/softbricking the phone thereby meeting the following goals.
1. Get it as close to barebones as possible. Only needing the "must have" apps that let it function.
2. I really only use this phone for reading pdf's, 3-4 games and watching some youtube help videos while I play, for when I get stuck with a part and to use this phone as a camera.
3. Getting rid of a good portion of over 300 apps that are currently on the phone. Sorry if you may not get it or understand it but it's kindof an OCD thing, if I don't need it at all, it needs to go!
4. I don't have a service plan nor do I want one on this phone, I have another phone for that.
Rob, two wrongs don't make a right. He can post & thinks what he wants. If you don't like what he has to post, don't cuss him out, add him to your ignore list or take it to PM's. I've already tried the cyanogen 12.1 rom from http://www.ionmm.com/ but it has a bit too much battery drain atm and makes my battery heat up way too much, leaving it on and idle sitting on the home screen with a stock install and no other apps installed on it.
