OK google everywhere, stock 4.3?? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone been able to get this going on 4.3? I thought it was spose to work on 4.3 up. But while I get the audio history etc settings, I'm not getting the extra two related to using it from any screen and from the lockscreen. I've switched to US English. It all worked fine on my N7. Just wondering...

You're not the only one. I've been searching daily and trying different things to see if I could get it to kick in. I tried tricks that people have posted but I'm just like you. I get the Audio History settings but not the additional settings in the OK Google detection area. I went as far as wiping my phone and starting from scratch just to see. Still no luck. I am rooted and am using a different phone running 4.4.3 but the same results. My wife is purely stock and her situation is identical to ours. Bummer

Bump.
I have the Galaxy S3 T999, stock, not rooted, Jelly Bean 4.3, Google search 3.5+, Play services 5+. Audio History is on. I've tried searching OK Google Everywhere and Unleash the Google. I factory reset my phone, and didn't use any data restore programs at all. Play services auto updated, and I updated my Google Search app. STILL no luck. Re-searched the OK Google Everywhere and the Unleash the Google phrases.
Nothing doing. Can somebody help us figure out what's going on?

And here I thought it was just me... I'm glad I found this thread. I was able to get it to work on my stock N7 with 4.4 but can't on my stock Galaxy S4 or stock Galaxy Tab 2 7", both running 4.3...

It's pretty disappointing. I checked a friend's phone who has the same exact phone and software as me but she has the OK Google everywhere option. Oh well I'll sit here and cry with you guys until something magically changes.

Fortunately for me I FINALLY have this activated. Turns out that the problem for me personally was due to the ROM that I am running. I'm rooted so if anyone here is I would advise you to check out this link because it fixed it for me right way. Good luck everyone.

Hey ccw, could you let us know what phone you have, and what rom and Android version you are running?
I reinstalled archiport beta and immediately got ok google everywhere available. 4.3 is more stable for me, but if use this feature enough to wanna put up with a less stable rom. Has anyone on stock 4.3 tried the method ccw linked?

I've just tried it myself, switching back to stock 4.3 after archiport 4.4 beta was getting unstable. Unfortunately this method didn't work, and I think it's a 4.3 thing. Bugger that, as if really use this feature, but am not quite prepared to get a new phone yet. There is an xposed module to get this kinda working, but again just for 4.4.

My wife is on stock 4.3 and she doesn't have the feature either so you could be right. I wish you the best of luck because I truly feel your frustration. If it makes you feel any better though now that I actually have it I only use it to goof around and that's becoming less and less. My family is sick and tired of me saying "Ok Google" every 10 minutes.

[Q] At&t Note i717 running 4.04 (Which root method should I use)

This may seem like a dumb question but I am unsure about which root method or files I should be using to root my i717 that is currently running Jelly Bean 4.04 with kernel 3.0.8. I am thinking that I can just use the one shown in the general thread but that says for STOCK note.
Any information would be greatly appreciated. I would like to get out from under the TWLauncher umbrella so I can use things like the new google search feature.
Thanks!
This is what I used. Worked great

Thanks, everything seemed to work well. The only issue I ran into was that the SuperUser pack he has listed kept failing. I had to go pick up one from the superuser site (sorry cant link yet) to have it complete successfully.
Now to try to find out which ROM I should use. Any recommendations? Im hoping to find one that has the new google voice search similar to siri. Thanks again for the help, it is much appreciated.

Glad that worked out for you, if you where looking for a custom rom, you could have skipped root in the first place and gone straight for custom recovery then a custom rom !
As for what your looking for, your looking for Google Search (Dubbed Google Now) on a Jelly Bean rom (unless you want to use a sideloaded possibly modified version for ICS) which is the parallel to siri (im trying to be neutral, IMHO Google Now crushes Siri six ways from sunday MOST of the time... situational use of course is the reason "most of the time" is said)

Actually a sideloaded modded version would be great. I am not really interested in much other than checking that out. I suppose I can just google for one unless of course you know of a working one. Thanks again for all the info.
Now is bundled into Google Search on JB. Hold the search button and it pops up. I'm using CM10 stable. Other roms have more options here and there but it's the most stable and smoothest I've used with the least random reboots ( A common JB problem)

Thats great and all, but from what I am understanding of what he said, hed rather not mess with it too much and stick on stock AT&T ICS 4.0.4 and just sideload Google Now...
I dont have a link handy, I read about it, but never cared because I have no issue with CM10 (but yea, google search should do the trick for you, just make sure you nab the latest version since it was only recently updated)!

I was able to find a working version of Google Now. Seems to work fairly well on my 4.0.4 build. I haven't yet decided if there is a real reason for me to try and change out the actual rom or not. There are so many that I really have no idea what I would be getting by doing one over the other.
Thanks again for the info.

I just got back home with my shiny new S4 and I can't wait to get the thing rooted and rom'd. But! Before I take the dive, I'd like to test the waters of this lovely phone's community.
If you have a few minutes to spare:
- What rom/kernel are you using? Why?
- What is one thing that you wish you knew about the S4 before flashing?
Thanks!

As far as I know (which I'm not 100%sure since I'm on mdk) you cannot flash custom roms yet if on the latest update (mj7 with Android 4.3) If you're lucky enough (unlikely) to get one with me7 firmware, you can flash custom roms with safestrap. This phone is not doing so well in the development area as I expected it would before release. Hopefully someone can figure out a way around the locked down bootloader

That makes it painfully obvious that you haven't read much around here.
What you first need to know is what firmware version you have. That determines what you can do.
What you asked is equivalent to saying that you have a car then asking what you can do to improve it - no data on what year or model, or what you want to do. Without that info, how can anyone help you? If you can't even be bothered to figure out what build you have to start with, nobody can suggest anything to help you.

I managed to figure that out a couple minutes ago. I actually got pushed to ME7 while I was rooting my S4 (ironic?) and was able to stop it after that. So, it seems I was one of the lucky(ish) ones. Would've been nice to stay at MDK, but SafeStrap seems to be one hell of a tool.

Hey there... I remember you from the Fascinate forums. I finally ended up getting an S4 about 2 1/2 months ago and for the most part it's a great device, but you can't expect near the same freedom as you had with the Fascinate.
When I got mine I ended up with ME7 so it sounds like you're in the same boat. I have mine rooted, but decided not to use Safestrap because of the limitations it brings (mainly the storage issue). I'm pretty happy with how I have mine set up and it's pretty snappy overall, but I really do wish I had gotten an MDK in order to really flash roms like I used to on my Fascinate.
If you choose to use Safestrap then go nuts and I hope you find some roms you like (Hyperdrive seems to get the most love around here from what I've noticed). I'll just quickly list off the modifications I did to mine that got it to where I like it:
-Froze all bloat with Titanium, including the SDM 1.0 (to prevent unwanted updates)
-Got rid of e911 icon and ongoing WiFi notification
-Installed the International Voice Dialer with call recording
-Installed Volume Boost mod (increased it around 50% over stock)
-Installed Xposed Framework so I could use Greenify features
-Used Greenify to hibernate all misbehaving apps (examples would be Facebook and Google Play Store) (... this increased battery life A LOT)
-Installed AdAway (adblocker)
-Turned all animations down to .5 in developer options and disabled all hovering effects on the lock screen
Doing all that really made this thing a lot better than it was, but I'm still hoping for a true bootloader unlock to start playing with it more. I have found a lot of the Touchwiz features to be quite useful, like the voice control stuff, camera app, etc, so I would probably stick with a modded Touchwiz rom if I had the option. Good luck.
edit: Oh and another thing you might not be aware of - the camera is set to 9.5MP by default in the app, you need to go into settings to use the native 13MP resolution.
One thing to note that no one mentioned (and in case you didn't read elsewhere) is that with SafeStrap you can not use ROMs with custom kernels. So that means no AOSP based ROMs like CM, Carbon, PACman and others since they are all using a custom kernel. At least until they get KEXEC working with SafeStrap (if they get it working). So basically you can only use modded TW roms with a stock kernel.

[Q] i9305 4.3 to 4.4? Is it possible?

Is it possible to update to CM11 nightly (or any other 4.4 roms... I'm not familiar with the scene) from 4.3 stock?
I did install KNOX, and then removed it. And then the Samsung service reflashed the rom again. So I don't know about it anymore. Didn't install it since then.
My story:
As many of you already did, I also installed the new update. Read below if you are interested (but you probably know all this anyway.)
So. A few days ago Google+ started to eat up my battery. I disabled it in the Application Manager and did not have the updates installed either. But it just started. My usual battery life dropped to only a couple of hours at max.
So I fired up Google and it said I have to install the updates. So I did.
Nothing changed. Then I went into Google+, signed in, and then signed out.
Nothing changed.
So all in all, I have a piece of crappy brick that I can't use anymore.
Bit of a rant: You gotta love this. You buy an overpriced product and they f... you over a thousand times. App makers, Samsung (4.3 crapdate), and EVEN Google. Then why the hell would I even want Android ever again? Seriously. If I would have to buy a phone now, I would pick an iPhone, no matter how much it costs more. This is just unjustifiable. "Hey customer, thanks for buying our product. Now let us make it all crap." ... WHY?
So yeah. Now I have no choice but to lose warranty (which I already used a few times because this is REALLY a crap quality phone). Not that HTC One X was any better, it had a faulty GPU/motherboard like 4 times. (Thanks Nvidia!) ... Sorry guys, I'm just infuriated.
Wish I could just change the phone down. I was thinking about Sony, but if Google can buttrape you anytime, why bother? No guarantee I can just fix it on Sony either.
CM10 is also fine
As I read the nightly can disable all GSM related operations (call/sms), so CM10 is also fine.
I just want to fix my battery life and have a stable phone again.

you should download your firmware from here
http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/1/?model=GT-I9305&pcode=0#firmware
wipe everything then go into download mode
Use Odin http://www.android.gs/download-odin-3-07/
and after you flash this, do a factory reset within the phone or through its recovery
I just did this with my wife's 9305 and its running like a champ

Thanks for the quick reply.
As I said my phone runs the 4.3 firmware now without any issue.
Except the 4.3 slow encryption and the huge battery drain. The phone got reset like 3-5 times in the past few weeks too.
So now I wonder if I can just install CM10 from 4.3.
But I need some confirmation as I know you cannot downgrade 4.3 for example. (Due to KNOX or whatever.)
Yeah should be no problem. My wife's battery drain happened too. I found the problem was with the SD card. I formatted it with the phone and it seems to be as good as it was on 4.12

Thanks for the replies too, but I still want a 100% CONFIRMATION that I can downgrade.
Having a brick is still worse than having like a few hours long battery life.

Look you can go from any version of cm back to stock. CM doesn't change your boot loader or your modem. The only time your stuck on a version of android is when it comes to stock. Like as a note 3 users we are stuck on KitKat because they updated our bootlaoder. Cm based Roms it doesn't matter.
And you should get an SD card to hold your back ups just in case.
Also if someone helps you on xda it's kind of nice to hit the thanks button. It allow others to see that their comment was useful.
Good luck.
BTW if your new to rooted and ROM installing I suggest reading through the Dev section for the i9305.
Also google your issue word for word and there are tons of android forums out there which may help you.
A lot of times if you open a thread that has been answered a lot they will ignore it or throw words you won't like your way.
So good luck

Yeah if I'm not going to get an answer in a few hours I'll give it a go. It's a brick anyway, heh.
Just did my wife's i9305 today. Moving to cm/omni shouldn't be an issue, however be warned you lose a lot of features like HDMI out and the camera doesn't work as well. I just put the galaxy project ROM on there as the i9305 has the extra GB of ram which keeps stock nice and smooth, also you can debloat if the need be. And if you run into camera issues like I did simply flash stock kernel then reflash rom. Honestly unless you prefer KitKat its a waste of the extra ram your device has as most of it simply will never get used.
Also with wanam xposed you can customize everything! Can't do that with an iPhone. Sorry to hear you have had a bad run but while Samsung's software isn't exactly great the hardware is beast and once you learn how to configure it and unlock its full potential you will see you made the right choice.

Thanks for your reply!
- How worse will the camera get?
- What other important features you know? (HDMI does not really matter to me.)
I do use it a lot, so I don't want to lose everything. (Only use simple picture/HDR modes tho.)
Tried again every kind of combination with Google+ and it's still eating my battery like crazy.
I mean... what the hell is the "Disable" for then? It "almost disables" the app or what? lol.

[Q] How to restore to HC?

Hi all!
Could you be so kind and help me revert back to honeycomb stock?
I know it sounds crazy, but I cant stand anymore how slow and laggy CM 10.1 I currently use is on this device. I've tried a lot of things like factory reset, reflushing lates nightly etc. Still horribly slow and at times totally unresponsive.
My ultimate goal is return back to task650 rom.
However I cannot find any HC stock images. I do not think that I can simply flush HC rom in CM 6.0.3.1 recovery.
I was only able to find hc-3.2_touchwiz_ux-full_sam_tab_10.1.zip from pershoot.
Please advise! Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Not sure where to find an HC-image yet, but what about trying Omni-ROM 4.4.2 KitKat newest build (+ A1-Kernel)?
It still has got some quirks, like bluetooth-audio not working or slow Video-decoding, but the rest is quite good and fluid now.
Thanks for your reply! However we are talking about my wife tablet and she needs video/cameras and BT.
So, unfortunately KK is out consideration at this point.
By the way, is KK Omni really that better? Thought I guess anything is better then touching screen and seeing touch and then waiting a couple of seconds for an action to really happen. I do not know what Google changed in memory management, but it now doesn't hold a candle against older versions. At least for such old device as Tab 10.1 is.
If your wife doesn't need much features, go for Omni 4.3. Its very smooth and stable enough for daily use.

Camera works; Bluetooth works also, just not streaming audio to a bluetooth-audio-device; Videos also work. Lokally stored seem to be better than streamed (YouTube, gameone, etc.)

Then... What about JellyBean3 (Android 4.3.1)?
I think most if not all you need is already compatible on that and it is a lot better in any case, thought.

Even 4.1.2 cm10 was superior,... What do you think you can expect from a Kitkat-Build?
IMHO, yes it is, even with those little quirks...
...and not to be mean, but I really don't think any 4.2-build can be called stable... They all have heavy idle-times/"hangs" up to a minute, if you've got some CPU&IO-Load-Hungry apps installed and running...

Well... May be it is my bad luck... I do not remember any CM build of any version that was smooth as Task650 rom.
So, you suggest to try rollback to 4.1? I though they stopped development.
Wife use BT streaming... I just got her nice LG headphones.
I guess I softened the problem a little bit for now by removing all apps that create background services and account. FB, LinkIn etc.
It helped a little bit.

Upgrading from android 4.1.1 due to "heartbleed bug"

Hi all. I am running 4.1.1 and have become aware my stock-rooted android version is at risk because of this latest "bug that affects SSL security. I like the "stock with goodies" rom that I have and want to keep everything the same as it is now. I read that you can flash an update file, but am concerned with the known issues this may cause. I cannot find any other custom rom that I like enough to want to switch to.
Android version: 4.1.1, Htc Sense 4+, Software version 3.16.651.3 710RD, HTC SDK API level 4.63, Baseband (Radio) 1.13.11.0830, Hboot 1.12 2222
TWRP version is 2.4.1.0
I want to stay rooted and be able to wifi tether without issues. Other roms I had issues with wifi tether among other things so Ive liked and stuck to this rom.
What would you do?

I cannot find any other custom rom that I like enough to want to switch to.
Android version: 4.1.1, Htc Sense 4+, Software version 3.16.651.3 710RD, HTC SDK API level 4.63, Baseband (Radio) 1.13.11.0830, Hboot 1.12 2222
TWRP version is 2.4.1.0
I want to stay rooted and be able to wifi tether without issues. Other roms I had issues with wifi tether among other things so Ive liked and stuck to this rom.
What would you do?

Before I give my input...what update file are you referring to? Was it an update file released from HTC, or from Google? Is it the 4.3 update that's been the latest rave around here (which is awesome, for the record)? Are you comfortable using Sense 5.0 (or 5.5)?
Sorry for all of the questions. While I can easily tell you that I would update, you don't seem very interested in doing so. Therefore, I need to know what you want, and you will get my educated answer.
My goal is to not be vulnerable to this SSL bug. I have not tried sense 5.0 or 5.5. Apparently google released a file to update to 4.3.

I'm in the same boat running a 4.1.1-based ROM ... MeanBean ... that I would like to keep, too, because I like it a lot. I'm not in a hurry to change because I do no financial transactions on my phone, plus I have a complicating factor in that my Sprint device has been flashed to run on Page Plus, the Verizon MVNO, and I'm concerned that making a really drastic change like to 4.3 or 4.4 will break the flash and force me to get that redone (although the person I bought the phone from tested it and flash survived a factory reset in TWRP, so I'm feeling pretty good that wiping it's not going to be an issue).
I've done a Titanium Backup of my user apps and used TWRP to create a nandroid ... I'm a noob but I'm learning ... and I've downloaded Yankees 2450's Y14 Aroma 4.1.2-based app to my SD card and I'm planning to flash it at some point, "when I get around to it," as much to get in on the ROM fun as out of any concern over HeartBleed (although I won't deny that some concern exists). Maybe that's one you should consider, the reviews in the development section seem pretty solid, and again it doesn't seem like it would be a massive change, that's why I'm going with it.
Thanks for your input. Im looking at that thread now
where 4.1.2 aroma roms are. There are quite a few versions.... not sure which would be best to try.

I downloaded the Y14 build which is the latest. I think 4.1.2 has the vulnerability but the actual HeartBleed bug hasn't been engaged as in 4.1.1.
Ah, i just downloaded the Y14 as well, but if theres still vulnerability there im not sure id feel okay with that.

Well the Hisense Sero 7 tablet I'm using to post (running 4.2.1) "has the vulnerability," but it's safe because HeartBleed isn't enabled. It's only enabled on 4.1.1 from everything I've heard.
Im going to give it a go now, and flash Y14.

Let me know how it works for you, I need to go ahead and flash mine, as noted I'm concerned about HeartBleed but not over panicking based in my usage.
So do you think this version 4.1.2 will ever have that ssl bug enabled? Im flashed and already having issues, only 1x signal and profile wont update =/
Activate this device does nothing as well. Even in WiFi settings, ALL networks show full bars, when i know many are very far away. Looks like im going back to my nandroid backup and decide what to do when i find more info. ALSO, 4G LTE did connect, but kept going away every 10 seconds or so, back to 1x which is not normal.

No, HeartBleed will not be enabled in anything save 4.1.1. You need to read up about the origin of this thing and the mechanism by how it is or isn't a threat.
Your only option is to go to a custom ROM that is not 4.1.1 based, or wait on HTC to issue the update for the stock ROM that they've promised, but have given no ETA for (and I wouldn't hold my breath).
I don't know if you have enough posts here to post on the development board ... that's another reason I've held off doing anything, although I'm getting close thanks to this thread ... but the developer of that ROM is very responsive to people with issues, and as I said the thing is very popular and seems pretty bulletproof from the response.
I promise I'm not his PR person, have never spoken to him, just found that ROM when I was looking for something that would be the least drastic change from what I'm running now, because of being flashed to Page Plus (which only gives me 3G, but I knew that going in). 4.3, you have to do more than just wipe and flash because of the partitions changes.
When I think about it, I don't see how changing the partitions on the phone will affect the functionality of the phone while using Page Plus. Maybe I'm looking at it incorrectly, but I don't reactivate my phone with Sprint every time that I flash a new rom, root it, change partitions, or anything at all. I could be wrong, though, for I have never flashed my phone to any other service.

I really don't know, thus my hesitance in my own situation. Had a "recommend a ROM thread locked because I was unaware that wasn't kosher, so I went back to the boards (which can be a daunting experience for a noob) and found that particular ROM and I've also downloaded CM10 stable.
Am basically just acclimating myself to this stuff (phone was rooted, running MeanBean and flashed to PP when I bought it, have never done any of this), learning how to use Titanium and TWRP to make backups, etc.
I''d be lying if I said HeartBleed wasn't a concern to me, but I'm not as panicked as the OP about it. I know I need to probably change, although I'm quite happy as is with MeanBean. Biggest priority aside from security is not having to spend $50 or so to get the phone reflashed to PP.
4.1.1 has three digits the ones that matter are the first two. 4.1.2 may still be vulnerable to heart bleed. As for flashing to page plus you can do that on your own for free there are guides for how to do this all over. The best bet for every one running below 4.3 is to update to a Rom that is 4.3+ also with that update comes many fixes for the most common phone issue one might have while running below 4.3. There are 3 fully functioning roms currently available for the evo running on the updated partitions. Sense 5.5 by chubbz and I captain's stock Rom. And vins viper 4.0 with sense 5.5. Now with all this knowledge I've given you go explore, test the waters jump in. And always remember to post a question Rom related after at least 1 hour of thread searching Google and running the basics of Rom flashing. Wipe caches, dalvik if all else factory reset.

Thanks for the advice. I have searched threads, as noted I have been practicing to test the waters ... I have a Titanium Backup of my apps and a Nandroid of current system with MeanBean on my SD card so I'm comfortable with that. I think I'm pretty clear on wiping the phone ... although I thought the factory reset took care of everything, do you still need to wipe caches/dalvik after that? Searching the threads is where I picked up on the 4.1.2 ROM which seems to be pretty bulletproof stable, and as far as I know HeartBleed isn't enabled in 4.1.2. I was basically looking at that as an intermediate step, again just to dip my foot in the pool of ROM flashing before attempting anything more elaborate. The instructions for going to 4.3 are a bit more complicated than wipe, flash, reboot, and I'd prefer to learn to swim a little better before jumping off the high board. Same with the Page Plus flashing. I'm sure I could eventually figure out how to do it myself, problem is I use my phone pretty much perpetually for work and can't afford to have it out of service for a millisecond, so it's worth the cost to me to get it done right first time, although I'd rather not break the flash in the first place. I've gotten some advice from folks who do such flashing that 4.3 will break it, every time.

So, I talked to a friend of mine who knows alot about alot... and he assured me that you will only be susceptible to heartbleed attacks on open or public wifi spots. So this bug does not affect anything over 3G/4G, which puts most of my concerns at risk. So don't be too worried if you don't constantly connect to open wifi networks you cannot completely trust. In conclusion, im not too concerned anymore and am going to leave the android version alone.
