Verizon G3 Hotspot hack - Verizon LG G3

I wanted to post this in the correct forum ( Android Dev) but it wont let me so Ill post here hoping it can be moved or will be ok here. Ok so here it is (drum roll).......LG G3 VS985 Hotspot hack. I do not take responsibility for doing this I simply tried it on my device and it worked. :good:

Download the file, backup and remove* HotspotProvision.apk and HotspotProvision.odex from /system/app/ And then drag in this copy of the apk**. Put it's permissions to rw-r--r-- and reboot.
The only caviat to this way is that every time you enable the hotspot you must change the password so it will enable (I Don't know Why). I had this happen on my G2 also so I am not sure if its me or that's how it goes. But hey it WORKS!
*People have said that you can rename the app if you want. I copied the files and put them in downloads then deleted them in the sys/app section. When you move them back to sys/app go in app manager and clear data/cache for the hotspot so it will load correctly. This is what I did and it worked great.
**To drag and drop I used Root browser

Edit: This was tested on Verizon as that is the only device I have. Not sure it this would work on other carriers.
I will end this by a great quote from Abraham Lincoln:

This will help your hotspot working? Please can write what it's ment for

If you pay for it through your carrier it will work. This is most likely for the free hotspot mod, so u don't need to pay for it.

Plus they normally have a data cap for hotspot apps. I'd gladly pay for a hotspot if my carrier didn't slap me with a 5gb cap (which I blow through easily enough)

I don't think I have a problem with this in my country. My Xperia Z was fully free of these caps and restrictions so I assume it is the same.

In the USA the telecom companies are running a criminal racket, they are slowly tightening their grip on bandwidth. Its pretty sad.

Verizon caps your hotspot app at 5 gigs? I would call them asap. I pay for tethering and my hotspot runs all the time with data over 20 gigs every month. I'm thinking maybe you don't have unlimited or just 5 gig p plan to start with.

I think its ridiculous to have to pay an additional fee if you have a limited data plan. If you have 2GB bandwidth you should be able to use it however you want. 2GB is 2GB.

I don't know any carrier that still offers limited Hotspot. The only one I know of is Verizon's old plan.

Per agreements with the fcc all limited plans should have free hotspot. You only have to pay for it on unlimited plans. Vzw has been this way for a little over a year. If you're on a limited plan and aren't provisioned for it, just call them and they'll add it. Grandfathered unlimited plans pay ~$30/mo

I am on an unlimited plan so I haven't been keeping track. I'm pretty sure when they first unveiled tiered data plans a couple years ago there was an additional fee just to enable wireless hotspot, but it makes sense for the FCC to prevent them from being able to do it.

Can anyone confirms this works? I tried and when I turn on mobile hotspot, it just doesn't work or turn on, no errors or anything. I allowed the right permissions and removed the odex and apk originals.

Bump. Also wondering if anyone was able to get this to work. Also this should probably be moved to the Verizon sub-forum

They have it working on the G3 ported ROMS on the G2, I wonder if they could take it from that.

Help with WiFi hotspot on my Amaze - T-Mo gave partial answer

I'm trying to run the WiFi hotspot on my Amaze to connect to a tablet. I can get the tablet and Amaze to recognize each other and connect. The tablet shows I'm connected to WiFi, but I can't run anything that needs data on the tablet. I've contacted T-Mobile and they say that everything should work without adding anything else to my plan. The rep I spoke to said it was a known issue with the Amaze, and there were a couple workarounds but she said she wasn't that familiar with the technical aspects of them and didn't want to give me any wrong info. She did tell me about a 3rd party app called WiFi Static that may help, but she wasn't familiar about any of the settings. Do you fine folk have any advice for me?

Nope. The only thing I used to root for was screen shot abilities and now that's baked in. I haven't even researched about rooting the Amaze.
I'm willing to bet that the tethering your going through is being blocked by the tethering manager as tablets are required to have webconnect instead of smartphone internet data plans. Try downloading apn manager from the market, then open it and look for all t-mobile tethering apn's and delete all apns in regards to t-mobile tethering.
That hopefully should fix it.
You have to add the Tethering data plan. I believe it is an additional $15.

You'll have to be more specific. Many apps use data, such as email, facebook, twitter, and others if you have sync turned on. That's normal, but you can turn all that off if you want.
I have all that turned on, but still rarely use over 2gb per month since I make sure to connect to wifi where available.

Verizon use to have that also, they probably still do, so is the AT&T dumbphone data plan is being used on a smartphone, this is possible because AT&T uses sim cards, and the service was sold to an actual dumbphone.
Is this the case?

I was using Fre3vo to temp root my phone but now it wont work since the ota update of ics. I don't need to be able to change roms or anything else. Or does anyone know of anything I can do so I can use wifi teather? Thanx in advanced.

Have you used that app on the Evo 3D? If you follow the link to the Play Store you posted on the other site and filter the reviews by device "PG86100" you will see that most people can't get it working on the Evo 3D. If you haven't tested it, it's always a good idea to mention that when referring people to apps or mods.
I know FoxFi works on the Evo 3D without root but only over a bluetooth connection and ClockworkMod tether works over USB without root. Those are the ones that I've tested.

Most Wi-Fi tether apps have to add or modify files in the system directories that are protected without root permission. The built-in hotspot has the files it needs pre-installed and they can be executed without root permission, the same as apps stored in the the /system/app directory. It also has additional checks in the ICS version to prevent unauthorized use and report tethering, so many people prefer alternative solutions.

I think that's the T-Mobile charge, but Sprint charges $30 per month to use your "unlimited" bandwidth on other devices.

I still don't understand. I bought my phone (without contract) in Germany (GSM, there's no such thing as cdma here) and there is no restriction of, or limit to the use of the Wifi Hotspot. Is this some US specific thing then? If i were to take my phone to the US and get a US sim card, would i face similar restrictions?
Sorry for derailing the thread btw, but this is relevant for me.

Rogers supports GSM phones in Canada, but there are no US GSM carriers (AT&T and T-Mobile) that support the Evo 3D on their networks. If your phone is unlocked and you can get it on to one of those networks, you would be restricted on AT&T without a data plan that covers tethering, and T-Mobile would severely throttle your bandwidth after about 2GB of usage in a billing period.
For those of us on Sprint or Virgin Mobile, which is the majority of Evo 3D users in the US, we are technically not allowed to do any tethering unless we pay for a $20(2GB)-$50(6GB)/month add-on tethering plan and use the Sprint provided hotspot app built into the ROM. Some people are grandfathered into the old tethering plan that was $30/month for 5GB.
Here's an article that covers the tethering rules for the major US carriers. You may be sorry you asked.

[Q] Stock Hotspot App : Worked without provisioning?

Hey everyone,
I did a search on this and couldnt find anything in the forum - forgive me if this has been covered.
I tried using the stock Wifi Hotspot app today expecting to be greeted by a message about needing to pay for it. My phone is 100% stock, not rooted. I pressed the icon and it instantly turned on without any mention of extra charges or provisioning, has anyone else seen this?
I dont believe my account is provisioned for using it as a hotspot, i've never even attempted to use stock tethering in the past as I am coming from a rooted SGS3 running custom ROMs
Anyone else using Wifi Tethering without paying for it? Oh, and im not on unlimited data, not sure if that matters.
Thanks!

Since you are not on an unlimited plan, it should be provisioned out the box.
The standard app should work no problem. For you they don't care. Actually the FCC made them not care.
Unlimited, they care.
Makes sense - the more i use it the more I pay them, thanks for the helpful response

Free MetroPCS tethering (APN mod)

If you are on MetroPcs and don't want to pay extra for the tethering, follow this guide!
Under settings>mobile networks>acces point names , add a new apn with the same information as your regular one (making a duplicate basically, just make sure the apn name differs).. but on the APN Type, make sure it says this : default, supl, hipri, dun
Basically just add the comma dun part compared to your regular apn . That's it! Now just make this your default apn and tether away with no hiccups on LTE. I'm on a family plan with my mom and i pay 55$ for my phone service monthly, TRUE unlimited everything on T-Mobile's network. Best pre-paid deal ever. Have been tethering for months with dozens of GBs tethered monthly without ever being capped or confronted about it by metro ha . Just my two cents!
What was your experience before this? I'm tethering now on postpaid T-Mobile with no changes at all.
Could we be canceled after tethering too much data?

No, at least my personal experience ( I've tethered about 30-50gbs of data monthly with zero issues ) They don't care .
Roger. I have 3 gigs of tethering on my postpaid unlimited T-Mobile plan. I've tethered a few gigs the last few days and the ma.web.2go website still has me as the 2.1 gigs tethered I had used before swapping my sim from my T-Mobile Note 2.
Nice then ha, i noticed also that my previous data usage was wiped when transferring my metropcs sim onto the HAM2 . This device plays along well with both USB and Wifi tethering .

Hi, would this work on a metropcs gsm samsung galaxy avant, phone, newly activated, locked, no root. Do i just add a new apn to match the metropcs one and add ",dun" to the apn type?
When I have turned on portable hotspot on my mate2, I have never had a metro popup on the devices I'm letting connect. I have the CC varient with B148 firmware if that makes a difference. Never had to do an APN mod and its been working fine. No tethering paid for
Time to try this. I've been averaging 30-50 gigs tethered a month on postpaid T-Mobile with no mods or problems at all. Now it's still working but it's counting data tethered.
Edit-no data at all. Any advice for doing this on T-Mobile?
Edit 2- rebooted my phone, no more tethering data used since. I hate electronics...
