[Q] for school and media - Xperia Tablet Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is the xperia z tablet good for pdfs and ebooks? I see it on woot for about 380 for the 32gb version new.
I will also be using it for some media.
Should i go ahead and buy this even though its last generation?
The waterproof isnt ismportant to me
does this tablet offer expandable memory?
any issues i should know about before buying?

I now use my XTZ since 3 month and I am happy with it.
First, it has a good battery life. I always came with it through the day. Of course it is PDF and ebook compatible. I like that this tablet is slim and light. The display is sharp and the speakers sound good. Some times there is a crackling noise on my speakers, which is the only issue I ran into. It supports microSD cards. These are my experiences with this device. I can really recommend it for daily use.

Works fine for PDFs and ebooks. It is last generation but it still works great and is a decent tablet. You can use micro SD cards for more storage. Haven't had any issues to speak of.

Well, lookie here.

A few months ago, I sold my Sony Xperia P (excellent aesthetics, but I'm a music junkie, and, while the DAC in that phone is great, the limited storage was killing me). Since then, I've been searching for a good replacement at a reasonable price.
My findings were reduced to Samsung N7000 (Galaxy Note), Galaxy S III (international, because Wolfson), Nokia N9 (limited storage still, but 64gb is A-OK) and a used iPhone 4S 64gb, all chosen because of their audio measurements.
And then GSMArena reviewed the LG Optimus L9 on January 4:
"Decently clean audio quality"
"The LG Optimus L9 did quite well in our audio quality test and easily put its premium 4X HD sibling to shame."
With a nice screen, microSD expansion, and price tag of just $200 (at t-mobile's Monthly 4G website), the Optimus L9, completely out of left field, is my choice.
Hi.
Audio quality is worser then Xperia P and S3 I think. Think about external audio player like a Sansa Clip+ it is very small and have microsd slot and cheap.
Funny you should mention that, because I have two Sansa Clip Zips (don't ask, I just ended up with two). Both are great (low distortion, low output impedance, etc.), but I'd like a more all-in-one solution, even if it comes at the cost of some measurements.
The big hook here for me is pricing. At two thirds the price of the Xperia P, this looks like a nice alternative.

What headphones do you have and what type of music do you prefer? I have CAL and the sound for me is flat from L9. It have good bass and high tones. But it's not going to give me fun of listening music. I still prefer sansa.

Sansa's awesome and all, but I can't make calls with it, and I'd rather just carry one device.
This is my first android phone, atfirst i thought of buying the Note, but at 2/3 the price, this phone works exceptionally well, browsing, video playback, audio, applications runs smoothly throughout, battery is quite decent .
I don't know what's going on mine. Playing ogg vorbis is choppy sometimes.
Now I moved to Note 2 and the problem is gone.
Ogg is low guality codec btw, try flac or high bit rate wma files.

Switching to a ~$700 phablet is a rather extreme solution to such a problem as ogg playback performance. A different media player could probably have done the trick.

Debating between Xperia Z tablet and Google Nexus 10

Was wondering if anyone could chime in. I havent seen either in person (going to staples today to see the nexus 10) and would appreciate it if anyone had any opinions.
Screen resolution and ppi- The nexus 10 obviously has a higher resolution and ppi, but side by side can you really even tell on a 10 inch tablet? I've read many reviews that have talked about how the difference between 1080p and retina/nexus 10 etc is not very noticeble at all.. Also this doesnt take into account contrast and brightness etc, if anyone can comment on the differences between the two screens Id appreciate it.
Size and feel- the Z is the thinnest and lightest 10 incher, but the nexus 10 seems to have an easier to hold back surface? I have a xperia zl smartphone and I chose this over the slightly more expensive Z bc it just felt easier to hold, even though it was thicker and had a curved back. Wondering if the same can be applied here in regards to the feel of both the Z and the N10.
Mouse- The nexus 10 can use a mouse, can the Z utilize one too? I'd like to be able to have a asus infinity transformer like setup with a bluetooth keyboard and a mouse etc for more capability when I travel, so I dont have to lug around my laptop.
Where?- I found out the N10 is only available in the retail outlets of Staples and sometimes walmart and sams club, where can I see the Z? Besides an official sony store, will it be available in any retail outlets? I have time to ponder this, as the Z just came out and cant be found for under 500.00 (for the 16g wifi) whereas the N10 has been around over 6 months and can be had used for 380 off ebay, etc.
Also not that this matters but Google should be announcing the next version of the N10 soon which will obviously trump both of these spec wise but with tech gadgets time will always bring worth a new winner.
Overall it seems the Xperia Z is for those that value the design asthetic, as well as the unique features such as the waterproof nature of it and remote control. The screen and battery are above average, but it seems its mostly about the design and thinness/weight etc.
Thanks~
Hi,
I'm actually getting rid of my Nexus 10 and purchasing the Z (I've had the 10 since it launched). The Nexus 10 would be a great tablet but for one issue: Apparently there is a memory leak with the "surfaceflinger" process that'll periodically cause the tablet to seize up and reboot. Using Chrome and viewing videos exacerbates the problem. I finally flashed the Sentinel ROM, and it was much more stable (Chrome uninstalled, using Firefox), but it'll still regularly lock up. Note that the memory leak is in a non-open binary module of some sort, so the modding community can't really help at this point. There's a bug filed, but Google, as always, seems pretty indifferent (granted it may be a bug with the Mali graphics drivers).
Other things I have found annoying with the Nexus 10 is its lack of 3rd party accessory support, as well as its somewhat chintzy build feel--my back flexes a bit and the removable strip on the back is creaky. Next, it STILL seems that there are games that aren't really optimized for the tablet and bog down in spite of its supposedly state of the art A15 processor--I think that's slowly improving, though. Finally, the battery life isn't the best (note that I root and freeze everything I don't use).
On a positive note, the screen is sharp as a tack, and with the right launcher (I've been using Nova) it's feels plenty fast.
Hope this helps.
Regards,
John Francis
I've had both and been disappointed by both.
The Nexus 10 seems to be plagued with issues like that graphics bug described above and a bunch of quality assurance issues (stuff stuck between glass and screen during manufacturing and edge colour bleed).
The Xperia Tablet Z seems to be having issues with the backing coming unstuck (double-sided tape is perhaps not the most robust manufacturing material), screen flexing and watertight stoppers over ports not being sufficiently watertight.
After 5 defective tablets of 3 different species (Nexus 7, Nexus 10 and Xperia) since last November, I'm waiting for the new batch (Tegra 4 Toshiba and Nexus 7 refresh) before I try again.
If you do decide to pull the trigger on either now — Nexus 10 if you like the screen and prompt Android updates or Xperia if you value the lightness, SD card expansion and IR blaster — your best bet is to open it up in-store and test it for it's known issues right then and there so you can exchange it right away.

I believe that the screen resolution shouldn't be a problem at regular viewing distance. I actually find text more pleasing on my SO-03E versus the iPad 3 I have lying around. But obviously if you want absolute sharpness, the Nexus 10 delivers.
Do note of course that the Nexus 10's ultra high resolution means that you'll have more difficulty finding wallpapers of that resolution, and more content/apps than on any other tablet will look fuzzy and low-res. As it is I already notice most apps having screen elements showing pixellation on the XPERIA Tablet Z or iPad.
Brightness and contrast on the XPERIA Tablet Z are good, but not exceptional. I cannot give an opinion on the Nexus 10, it isn't really officially sold in my country so as much as I wanted one at the time I'd have to go out of my way to get it!

The XPERIA Tablet Z has a very nice (almost like ultra smooth, grippy leather) rear texturing - it stays in my palm even at a nearly 80 degree vertical angle. The grippy matte plastic on the back, the sheer thinness and weight of the tablet make it extremely easy for me to carry it, personally.
I have little to no qualms using it one handed, or even just carrying it around in the hand like a paper folder, as it pretty much weighs like one. The fact that it lacks rounded edges is circumvented by the thinness. Unlike the Z phone, it's much larger so you have enough space on each side to place your hands, rather than having to cup the device in your hand. It's pretty much like holding a magazine.
The tablet's rigidity is pretty impressive for me (although it can flex a tiny bit) and it feels very solid throughout. Only the buttons feel a little mushy, but otherwise build quality is sternly high on my unit. Of course I wouldn't be surprised if Japanese units have tighter quality control.

I just tried this with an OTG cable and a small wired mobile mouse, an ASUS notebook one in fact. Works a-OK, but the position of the MicroUSB port is moderately unwieldy in practice and you'll of course have to deal with the flaps.

The XPERIA Tablet Z's definitely a pricey prospect, but if you're willing to forego warranty sellers like eBay have Japanese models for cheaper, or you can even get a friend in Japan to try shipping you one. I saw some Japanese e-tailers selling it for like $150 less than expected when searching for my own. I believe the Nexus 10 is also sold direct via Google Play? Is it cheaper that way?

It'll never end, but if you're willing to wait, by all means. I was getting impatient myself and desired a lighter, attractive design with LTE (the Nexus 10 doesn't have LTE...), a MicroSD slot and water-resistance. I also prefer WUXGA (1920x1200) over WQXGA (2560x1600) because the 1920x1080 resolution is much more common (1080p video, same resolution as my desktop monitor and TV). WQXGA is mostly used only by 30" professional monitors, and rarely are there wallpapers let alone content made for it. The Sony tab's also one of the few ones around featuring the WUXGA resolution, I can only think of one other tablet and it's by Acer.
Also you'll want to note that the XPERIA Tablet Z only has the S4 Pro, which is slightly behind the Snapdragon 600, while incoming models will likely feature Snapdragon 800, or perhaps ASUS' new Infinity might interest you with its Tegra 4 chip.
The XPERIA Tablet Z's definitely at the slightly lower end of the future ready spectrum, due to; Snapdragon S4 vs Snapdragon 600 (slightly weaker CPU, but almost equal GPU), lower resolution (WUXGA vs WQXGA, but this isn't a con for me) and Android 4.1 vs 4.2 (complete with slower updates). But I was willing to compromise for what it gave in return.
I'm happy with mine, so if you can see both in person, weigh your opinions and desires. That said my XPERIA Tablet Z definitely gets some attention from people, compared to the Galaxy Note/Tabs that are increasingly commonsight.
I hope that helps.

From Xperia Z Ultra to Z3 Tablet as my phone..anyone done it?

Hi!
I was wondering if anyone here has gone from a Xperia Z Ultra (6.44" screen) to the Z3 tablet.
It seems Sony has no plans of any similar size phones so after the Ultra, its hard for me to think of any smaller phone. I kind of wanted to get the Nvidia Shield 32GB LTE but since you cannot use it for phone calls, at least not regular ones, the Z3 Tablet is currently my only choice it seems.
Still its bigger than I wanted but looks like the smallest option WITH call support.
Any feedback is welcome!
I own both however I got the 32 WiFi tablet and regret it as I use both when on the road and really should have got the LTE version as it would be perfect for an all rounder.

I switched from a Galaxy Tab, but I am using the Z3TC as my phone. Speakerphone works well and you can get a solid Plantronics bluetooth for cheap on eBay.
It is pocketable (for me), and it has an extra GB of RAM compared to the Ultra. A 7.4" screen size, with a slightly wider bezel (I find myself touching the side of the screen by mistake) would be ideal, but I am generally pleased (6.4 with soft keys is a bit small to me).
The Nvidia Shield is less pocketable (or should be based on specs) and is almost 50% heavier and has less RAM and hence probably wouldn't run as smoothly. If you were considering the Shield, I have no clue why you would shy away from the Z3TC.

Thanks for the feedback guys!

Developer support, and worth the purchase?

My Xperia Z of nearly 3 years has broken, a screen crack just now that I noticed after a CSGO session. Maybe I furiously pounded on my desk after some typical BS and that caused it; who knows. I really wanted to hold onto my Xperia Z until the 2016 series of flagship devices with the SD820, and was considering purchasing a cheap stopgap till those release, or buying a nice phone now and upgrade in a few years. This Oneplus X seems like a nice middleground between those options - I can give this to a family member, perhaps.
The fact the Oneplus X has an SD card slot, excellent screen, good software features and decent battery life at a reasonable price is enticing. I couldn't care less about gaming performance or the camera - I play chess, sudoku, and occasionally a gameboy emulator. I had a few questions though:
- How much of the storage capacity (I'm assuming it comes with 16gb standard) is usable out the box? I have a 128GB sd card so I'm hoping I can use marshmallow's features to merge it with internal memory.
- What's audio like? Distortion at high volume, quality compared to other phones and so on - I'm coming from a Sony phone which have high quality sound, is the X comparable?
- How is developer support? I've heard Oneplus are withholding certain sources required for easy development - I wanted to experiment with other ROMs like Chroma, and so on. I suppose this will happen over time?
- Is the ceramic option worth it? In the pictures, it doesn't seem to be rounded off like the standard glass finish, and I haven't been able to find any resources about it.
- Does GPS lock on quickly and effectively?
- How is battery life? In a typical day I spend the day in Uni where there's typically no signal inside buildings, so airplane mode saves battery for me. Enough for 2 day battery life?
Thanks in advance, I've heard some bad stories about the Oneplus One which I bought for my mum, apparently warranty support is awful. Hopefully that's changed.

I'm fully satisfied because.
1. Best in class screen
2. No lag
3. Calling feature

What's your reasoning for choosing the Z over the Z play?

Screen, Nougat, processor, Daydream, etc? I currently have the Z but keep seeing how people are loving the Z play even more.
Battery. I'm unable to even discharge my Moto Z in a full day of use, how could I discharge the Play?
Seriously... speed and height.
Daydream VR
The VZW Z was $120 with no contract and no trade-in. Got four of them to replacing the aging phones of family members.
Locked bootloader is a huge negative for sure, but with the exception of AdAway, I find myself less concerned with root and custom ROMs given how close to vanilla the Moto is.
If someone figures out how to unlock it, I'll do it without a second thought, but at $120 the specs make it a no-brainer over the Z Play and well worth the risk of being stuck with a locked bootloader (for me).
It's thin and light
Hardware, software (nougat), thickness, the dark frame, the aluminium cover.
Hey guys. I've just gone through this so I thought I'd add my $0.02.
I went into a local shop and got some hands on tune with both of these. Honestly, with normal use I was pretty tough to tell the difference. Even the screens were close enough for that to not be an issue.
In the hand, the play felt better to me. The regular Z was almost too thin and the edges felt quite sharp.
Ultimately, I went with the regular Z and here are my reasons in order of importance to me:
1. Camera
Looking at the pictures taken I that shop there was a marked difference between the two. This may have been exacerbated my the play's lower res screen but the photos taken indoors were more passable to me.
2. Specs
Even though the play was just as smooth navigating Android, my assumption is that the SD 820 in the Z will give it more longevity.
3. Thickness
I have the speaker, camera and battery moto mods. The Z feels much better in the hand with mods installed than the play. Those couple of mm do make a difference.
4. Price
Over here in Aus, there's $300 difference between the play and the Z retail. However, I actually bought my Z on Expansys during a sale for $629 with free shipping. The play was $489 and for me the extra $$$ is comfortably justified.
I still dig the play though. I've had back of my GS7 and even though the GS7 camera is KILLER, I'd probably still pick the okay over it.
That is all, hope that helps anyone else tossing up between the two.
Play camera is considered better. Unless you're in love with the form factor of the Z I don't see it.

Considered better by who? I think you'd be pressed to find even one review which would support this claim.
Play has more megapixel, sure. But it also has a narrower aperture lens so it's low light performance is always going to produce shots with now noise and less detai.
There's much more to a camera than a sensor. Case in point: Google pixel and Xiaomi Mi5s. Exact same sensor but have you heard anyone talking about the Xiaomi being the best smartphone camera money can buy? There's a reason for that.
I'm not intending to be rude here but for real... if you're going to tout the Play as having a better camera then you need a pretty solid basis for it considering every single review of the Play I came across described the camera as just passable.
Sent from my SM-G930F using XDA-Developers Legacy app
Both Anandtech' and DXO basically say the Z Play has the better camera. The shots I've seen seem to confirm that. Where are the reviews you refer to that compare them DIRECTLY? A whole lot of vitriole in that post.
Lightweight and thin, I can barely feel it in my pocket. I get 5h+ screentime with the combination of Greenify, Lux AB and another app I forget; that schedules system things around the phones hibernation.
Considering that Nougat recently got pushed for the Z Play, it was noted that Daydream VR is not included in the update because of the Z Play's low resolution and less powerful Snapdragon 635 processor. I guess I'm glad I spent the extra few bucks to get the Z instead.
I was going to get the Play, but my carrier stopped offering it, so around here it was about $400 to buy one from the classifieds. Mostly just wanted the bigger battery.
So I got the Z for zero down as an upgrade with my carrier instead. And really, the battery has surprised me. I'm getting 5 to 6 hours screen on time, and the phone charges so fast anyway. So I'm glad I got the Z now. The camera has been a nice surprise too, compared to phones I've previously had.
This is my 3rd Moto. I've had the original X and the N6 also. Have loved all my moto phones.
Still getting the battery mod soon though.

Are you with Koodo? I'm with Koodo and they did indeed just stop carrying the Z Play, just when I was thinking of upgrading to it from the X Play I was wondering whether the "regular" Z might be my next choice, and it just may be...

Well, the Z is the better device. No doubt. Minus a headphone jack and the Play has a bigger battery.
The lack of headphone jack is definitely a nuisance. Have to be charged up before watching stuff, or listening to a lot of music. There's Bluetooth headphones out there though too.
The battery life surprised me, not much worse than my oneplus-one, or N6, but not stellar of course. I just got the incipio battery mod, so that solves that. Lol. It's bulkier, but not too crazy.
So it was cash for a play, probably used, or zero for the Z on a two year contract. I'm happy with what I got though.
I'm with bell. Oh, and it's the best camera I've had on a phone so far. I don't expect pics like an actual camera, so this meets my expectations for sure. :good:
Great specs, but mostly due to how thin and sexy it looks. Battery is no big deal to me these days because quick charge is fabulous...
