Hi I am looking for a new tablet for video viewing and I am thinking about Z2. Ive got a z1 compact smartphone and its great, I wouldnt mind owing a sony tablet too.
Now my question is Z2 tablet capable of playing 1080p HI10P videos (mainly anime) ? my z1c can play 720p hi10p vids in software playback mode, which is ok.
Can anyone confirm this that it plays them or doesnt. Thanks

Just tested on mine. It doesn't play using the inbuilt Sony movie player. I can get it working using third party players (I tried VLC and MXPlayer), but only using the software decoder.

Thanks. Did you experience any problems (stuttering, lag, seeking not working, etc)?

Hi there, I been searching around regarding this HD Video playback issue but till now there are just like half half situation. Some people claimed their device can run smoothly for 720P video but some said can't, therefore I would like to ask about this question again.
I have tried out few HD trailer in 720p mp4 format, coded in h.264. My result was out of 10 720P video I tried, only 2-3 able to play smoothly in my x10i, the rest will either have video lagging or require soft-decoding which will cause in video lagging as well. In short, my x10i can't play 720P well.
I have another solution in hand which is converted them still into h.264 but in resolution of 854*480, and all of these converted video worked fine. Just wondering if most of the x10i user able to play 720P video smoothly or not since conversion requires some times... Also wish to know is it the real hardware constraints for x10i to play HD video or only my device having some processing problem...
Nevertheless thank you for your answer and opinion =)

hmm that's weird, I played HD on my phone perfectly fine, didn't lag at all maybe you need to try different video players, there's some one that play HD/MKV on the market but there is no point playing HD on a non-hd screen.

I tried moboplayer, rockplayer, vplayer. They all won't able to play it smoothly, neither hard-decoding nor soft-decoding. Hmm your video size is 1280*720 or above? As far as I concerned 480P already consider as HD and my phone is able to play them well as well.
I understand there is no point playing HD on x10 screen, but all my video source are in HD format and I would like to figure out x10i capabilities in HD playing so it may save me some time doing video conversion

+1.Indeed
But give mx player or Dice Player a try they are a bit smoother.
use mx player
The built in video player seems to work fine with all my 720p HD videos.

I've seen some nice videos on Youtube from Sony Ericsson promoters displaying Xperia Neo devices HDMI-wired to large TVs and it looks good with photos and videos shot from the in-built camera. But I'd like to hear from your experience playing movies, not stuff you filmed on your camera.
Is it possible to watch HD movies from the SD card on the TV through the HDMI? Does the Neo plays most format to begin with? Does is play any decent format at all with subtitles? Has anyone tried this?
yeah you can watch 720p movies so you can also watch that through hdmi
I know I could watch 720p videos, what I don't know about is compatibility, performance, and if it takes special video playback software. The examples I've seen were with specially tailored mp4 videos. Some HD videos come in AVI or MKV... does anyone know if this would be a problem with the Xperia Neo?
---------- Post added at 01:11 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:09 PM ----------
By the way, I didn't see a single video player installed on the Xperia Neo I tested on the store. I might have missed it. On the video examples I've seen they use the standard gallery app.
I played .avi video files using MoboPlayer. I think that using third party video players you can play .mkv too (did not test it)

Cool! HD video? What about performance?
Also, anyone ever used subtitles?
I have the neo and just got my hdmi cable. Have yet to test this either so would like to know as well. Don't have a tv with hdmi yet though. So can't test myself.

I'm gonna get the Neo soon (its only just come out in N.Z shops) I was able to get my hands on one today to feel the build quality and I like it..
I was wondering if the HDMI port also works for the normal phone screen.. What I'm really after is to be able to plug the phone into a hotel LCD screen to write e-mails browse the web etc with a BT keyboard... some phone only seem to be able to play videos and look at photos over the HDMI port.. how is the Neo??

Awesome! that's all I needed to know.. now to find a cheap Neo.. to replace my trusty but severely modified mini.. HD Video and Skype video calling here I come!!

hdmi cable works with video with not higher resolution than 720p (tested with diceplayer and mx video player soft decoding, hardware does not support divix or mkv)
with software decoding i tried to play Full HD 1080p and did it, but it wasn't smooth, and video and sound was not synchronized.
Tested on not modified Neo. I would be very pleased if someone tested the same on overclocked device and say if it helped.
Oh okay, will have to test this myself as well, wonder if overclocks do help or maybe it wasn't smooth because of the software?, or both... we need more testers of hdmi, speaking of which, my cable came the other day, but left it at home, which at the moment is close to 2 hours away so can't test it this weekend any-way.
My neo finally arrived and I took it for some serious video testing.
Anything going on the neo goes on the TV through HDMI, be it video or game or app, or anything. Now to video performance.
I tried several different resolutions and file formats:
- Apparently the native app will only run mp4 and 3gp.
- Using MX Video Player I got full compatibility with all file formats and subtitles I tried (with different encodings too).
- File formats I tried: avi (I think it was xvid), flv, mp4, wmv, mkv (it says x264 here), mpg.
- Resolutions I tried: several up to 720p (sorry, I don't have access to anything larger)
The thing ran all 720p mp4 videos flawlessly. Other formats, the best it could do was run a 540p flv very well. 720p videos of other formats ran choppy and slow.
I converted the 720p film (6000 kbps bitrate) I had here to a 720p mp4 (5000 kbps bitrate just to improve file size). It ran flawlessly. Now am converting my films to that size and format when I want to watch them on the tv.
I'm loving the phone, it's very snappy and does the job.
I tried some 1080p mp4 videos. They run choppy too. It'd be pointless though, since the HDMI output from the neo is 720p anyway.
So, apparently, anything above 720p is off-limits with the original firmware.
Youtube on Neo --> TV out via HDMI?
Can you open the youtube application on your phone, then watch it on your TV through HDMI from your Neo?

I'll try this at home, but my guess is that you can do this normally, as anything that goes on the phone (you can play 3D games and watch them on the TV for example).
The drawback is that the video quality of Youtube videos on the phone is not HD, even if you turn on the "HQ" button.
I charged at same time as using hdmi big mistake cooked phone won't do that again

Are you guys able to playback hd video? Im not talking about youtube but rather bluray rips or general mkv, etc... HD video.
If so, which player are you using (android or web os)

I used Kalemsoft with WebOS. It played 1080p and blue ray rips wonderfully. Android, and in the other hand, has problems still with video playback.
Press thanks if I helped!!

In webOs I use touchPlayer, in Android, meridian, mxvideo and moboot play just about everything for me.
webos.. kalemsoft works great. plus setsup and streams from another pc on lan or pc from out of lan hotspot..
all features work great and automatic
I use touchplayer for compatibility but it chokes on big HD stuff.
For anything serious I just encode it specifically for my touchpad. Then it plays fine even on the stock player. Including seek/skip.
I do a ton of encoding for youtube so doing a few movies for my touchpad is no biggie and even if I had a program like the fabled Kalimsoft that can play anything I would still encode it for my touchpad because I would rather have a 1.5GB movie instead of a 7GB one on a 32GB device.
I have no reason for a movie larger than the touchpads screen resolution since it does not even have a TV out feature like some other devices so its not like you will ever see it displayed in any resolution other than the screens native.
And yes I know my stuff so I made a tutorial on how to do it: http://youtu.be/6ayiV9e23-4
my last phone was msm8255 adreno 205 that capable to play 720p video only
i would like to know if evo 3d manage to play 1080p rmvb file ?
feel like getting it . And how is its speaker performance ? Do it have bass ?
I would like to try sg2 but the speaker is plain treble without bass .
It won't play those files natively. You'd need to find an app that supports it. The speaker also lacks bass, but I think that'll be true for any smart phone. It's such a tiny speaker and not intended to be your boombox.

mobo player will play 1080p video ?
and will evo 3d receive ICS in the future ?

Probably
Yes
Diceplayer will almost certainly play it. For some reason, its better at playing 1080p content on this phone than mobo player. Do you have a sample file I can test for you?
One other thing to consider is that there is currently no way to play files bigger than 4gb ...
It will probably lag too badly to be viewable as there is no native hardware acceleration for rmvb video files. Same goes for the galaxy s2.
it won`t play those videos natively but it will play fine on a 3rd party media player such as mx player. coming from a nokia n8, the speaker is pretty bad but compared to other smart phones it is decent but not great however this can be fixed with tweaks.

Not even close. Its lagging really bad already on 720p. Forget about watching it in 1080p. This is tried on Dice player and MX video player. Even my Epic 4G Touch cannot play the 1080p rmvb.
I have both of these phones and trust me none of them cannot play HD resolution rmvb currently.
Hi, my z3 tab has some problem in the playback of 1080p movies (mkv or mp4), i want specify that it is an issue that someone can not notice, for example my wife see movies witout problem, but i ham more accurate and see that video is not perfect fluid. Use MX Player and install custom codec from here on XDA and not from play store
