I'm just off to work but thinking of getting a Z2. So not trawled forum yet sorry...
Can it be rooted?
Will it void Warranty like Knox Counter on Note 3?
Are there as many custom ROMs as for Note 3?
....is it as good as the Note 3... (I had a Note 3 but found it lacking in comparison to the experience of the Note 2).
Thanks!!

Premium Software and Hardware
I switched from my note 3 SM-N900 to Z2 and let me tell you it is an upgrade.
20.7 Camera is more powerful and has a lot of useful features built in. You can make movies with it.
X-reality engine is amazing which brings life to pictures.
Beautiful free thems including the navigation bar.
Double tap to wake combined with lock screen app (swipe from home button app to lock screen). Now i don't press physical buttons anymore. Fast access and fast exit.
Less bloat apps. Lollipop update is near pure android.
Has a lot of rom more than twice as, devs, official CM. Z2 have a stable CM11 if I am not mistaken. Note 3 (Octa) still no CM that can be used for a semi daily use and deva are giving up (dead threads all over there).
I like not caring about spelling water on it. Waterproofness
To sum things up, Z2 is a everything you want in a device and Sony has done a great jop in their stock that you may not root it at all.

There's new button on navigation bar called MW-button. When it is long pressed a new screen appears that is split in two. Each having an application drawer where all applications can be scrolled. On clicking an application, it appears in the split view on that side.
Would love for Paranoid Android to have MultiWindow but the developers involved have stated a few times that Multi Window won't be implemented.
I love this mock up! wish it can come true
This can be done with Xposed and the XMultiWindow module.
Or xhalo floating windows, also an xposed module, mostly works a treat.
The Nexus 5, like the Nexus 4, is based off of another LG phone, right? Namely the G2, as the N4 was based on the Optimus G. And people have been porting the Split Window feature from the Flex to the G2 since they're essentially the same phone, so is it possible to port over again?
I like the idea but I won't implement it till it can be proven that haven't two apps are useful while using only half the screen.
Let's assume that another app is only one click away. Under want circumstances would having two apps at be useful understanding that you can see half the content you usual do are useful? For most apps I have found the screen size to be small for two applications especially while utilizing the keyboard. There is simple not enough space for two applications . Until this can be proven more useful than having a temporary mini application then it won't be supported in PA.

I would like this feature too. I use it for college when typing and researching (Brower/OfficeSuite).

agree
Nubia X6 have this function
Would love this option. Mostly to be able to listen to Youtube and using the phone for whatever else at the same time. But there might be easier solutions for this 'problem'...

I use multi-window a lot on galaxy note 8. If you are learning a new language you will find it invaluable. In fact any ROM without multi-window capability is unsuitable for a tablet.
I feel like this feature is far more relevant with the Nexus 6 in the game...
Has anyone learn if this is in the making?, would love to have this on the nexus 6....to put this on top of all Androids' Family

Hi there,
I'm about to buy a phone and I have the Samsung galaxy note 3 for 350 € or the LG g2 for 400€
So,if I bought the LG and flashed a custom rom, would I lose any useful LG feature like the double tap to unlock the screen?
Hello,
No the knock on works on AOSP ROMS and LG based ROMS.
but you will lose other feauters like q slide, some fuctions in the main camera app. And other LG stuff to. Im running an AOSP Rom, some bugs here and there but overall good.
Good luck.

you wont loose any features if you use custome stock mod rom or flex rom.
Snap buy the Note 3 imo
"Custom" as in aosp/pa/4.4.2 running on international d802? Sure, you will lose some lg functions and get some new ones.
"Custom" 4.2.2 roms? They add functionality from a different lg model (flex).
PS: that note 3 is a second hand one, right?

Weird, in the UK the note 3 is about £200 more than the g2.

Yeah I suppose but the only feature I think is absolutely needed is the double tap to unlock the screen, would I lose that one?
Both are 1st hand
Q-remote is the only thing I miss

As said.. Knock-on works fine. There's also the LG camera, IR remote, etc, in the Apps and Themes section.
Some other nonsense like q-apps, q-slide, etc are gone, but you can replace them with other things if you really liked them.
Hi All,
I am very disappointed with my current Samsung Galaxy S5 and wish to change it to the new Sony Xperia Z2, before I do I would like to ask some basic questions from fellow users
1) Is there any issue with rooting? does it void the warranty for good like with the KNOX 0/1 on new Samsung devices?
2) Battery life? is it any good?
3) Waterproof - is it really? MAIN question is can I use it underwater? does the screen respond when submerged or not? The S5 will survive immersion but it cannot be used under water as the screen does not respond...
4) ROM development, can someone suggest some really nice ROMS that are themed customised?
1. There is actually no problem with rooting, unlocking bootloader is not needed anymore so u still have warranty and phone is untouched, rooting process takes up to 5 mins withouth rebooting its really easy now.
2. Battery life is great! Even withouth build in battery savings
3.Screen isnt responsive under water, but you can still use camera underwater
4. I cant help with this as i am using factory rom.

1. From others it seems rooting it is easy, but it voids the warranty.
2. Battery life is one of the best you can get. Really long lasting.
3. No screen is usable when submerged, but you can take photos as there's a physical camera button with this phone.
4. Can't help you here, as I use the factory ROM

1) No issues with rooting, in fact its even available on locked bootloader now! No. Rooting does not void warranty, unlocking bootloader might, but Sony typically never checks for such stuff.
2) Its the best among the current flagships. This thing is a beast, look here - http://www.gsmarena.com/battery-test.php3
3) YUP!! It has higher certification than S5 at it. But no, it can't be used underwater either but you can take pictures with the hardware shutter key.
4) If you want themes, those are built into stock too. These are just a few - http://www.xperiablog.net/2014/03/27/seven-new-xperia-themes-launched-from-knowit-mobile/
Thanks for the great insight, I will change over very shortly, battery life on the S5 is rubbish and xda development for the S5 is very narrow. I don't mind the Z2 being bigger as my all time favourite phone is still the Note 3, so I hope the Z2 can be a close match
You must go for Changing Samsung S5 for Sony Z2.
Sony Z2 is awesome and have many advance features that are you missing.
Z2 is really fantastic. In every way.
And batt life is awesome.
If its development you are looking for, im not sure z2 is the right device for you. Apart from that, great device.
If you're looking for dev support for the Z2, it might be a bit of a strange situation: Sony releases devices every ~6 months, so as the Z1 came out last autumn, the Z2 arrived this spring. Despite the quick cycles, cross-device development is still going quite well. I rooted my device using the "EasyRoot" exploit that was originally written for the Z1 Compact, so owning a Sony device may not be as bad as time moves on and newer phones are released.
All in all, a very good phone. Highly recommend rooting and installing Xposed. GravityBox and AppOps are fantastic contributions to an already good device.
For themes you REALLY have to start using some custom launchers like Nova, Apex etc. The themes is not a ''theme'' in that way. Just a change of background and some colours...
Sony Themes are much more than colours.
Z2 got camera button but S5 don't have.

despite the alpha is still considered a medium-range phone, i want that people who have it to be proud!
why?
because the performance of this phone is a BEAST !!!
just look at the images uploaded from my device, and this is made with stock rom from samsung, no root and no tricks!
Just imagine what this can do over a rooted and/or custom rom !
All of you with a galaxy alpha should try and test a little your beast.
I also challenge you to beat my score, but the condition is to have the original rom, no root or other tricks!
In the last 6 months I had a nexus 5 (2013), HTC One M8 (2014) and now the Alpha Exynos. To be honest, other that the benchmark score, I feel that the Alpha is way more slow than the other two. Using it means constant waiting for something to load. I also feel that the TW is the bottleneck and I really don't understand why it has to take such a long time to load multitasking and/or google search (not to mention the constant stutters and hiccups). I have the latest software - unlocked version - and not rooted.
In terms of daily use is close to HTC One M7 which is a 2013 phone (witch I had before nexus 5).
I'm hoping that 5.0.1 and ART to change this. If not, I'm selling it.
Cheers.
try this:
1- go to developer options and disable all 3 animation settings that are set to 1x by default!
2- install a thirdparty launcher, i recommend nova launcher ...and
3- you dont have to sell it if you achieve request no. 1 and 2, maby you will enjoy it, it is really a premium phone, nice looking and impressing performance as you see my main thread.
i have the exynos also and belive me is way more performant then qualcomm version, try it both before buying!
best regards

i just upgraded myself (note 4) and the missus (alpha) and have got to say the alpha is a great phone. if i didn't need the larger screen and spen i would of also had one. missus is on 2 days 9hours of battery, 1hr 30mins screen with 29% left which has impressed me.
note 4 (qualcomm) for comaparison
Now that the Galaxy Note 7 is out (they skipped 6 I guess?) I'm looking to finally upgrade from my Note 2. I have my eyes set on the Note 4 since it's not too different from the Note 5 but it's more versatile. My only issue with the Note 4 is the lack of dark theme, and this is actually extremely important to me. I want to know if there's a way I can potentially change the theme to dark without rooting my phone, but if I have to root I'd also like to know what would have the least impact on performance. My carrier is Verizon, if that makes a difference on what model; though I haven't bought the new phone yet.
To summarize, I'm looking for a theme that:
turns all menus dark or black
preferably doesn't require rooting
doesn't impact performance
retains S pen functionality
Thanks!
I think you do need root to change themes since note 4 doesn't have the options to change themes like the newer models.

I haven't used a launcher before, would that possibly do it? Or would it not change everything?
Im not sure if some launcher can change the colors of the menus. Try install themer on playstore that might help you start.

U need to flash a cm rom to get dark themes as most TW devs have awful taste or maybe I have an awful taste as I strongly dislike/hate white stock theme

You have to root.
but by using Xposed you can theme it to almost be black, using a few modules.
Plus with xposed you can do so much more other than save battery.
And all this will not effect your spen and other samsung app.

Do you have a link to that? I'm new to modding phones so I do appreciate the help a ton. A lot of this seems pretty overwhelming.
If your new to it I would say don't do it. You need to know what your doing before going into it.
Main things to do
- Deodex your stock rom (or get one already deodexed)
- Get the right xposed installler and app
- Get twrp or other custom recovery installed.
I don't have the links and process is a bit tricky.
So first read up on these a lot and make sure you get each thing fully before you do anything.
