I just played with the G3 and when I went through the settings to display, I realized it was maxed out. I backed it down to half and it was damn near dark. On full bright it's not as bright as my S5 on half.
Having to max it will be a huge battery issue...grrrrr!!!!

Get over what? Did I say there was a problem? I am reporting my findings.
I was worried about this, GPad had the same issues and I went back to my trusty N7. Damn
Just to clarify, you can change the brightness level while it still is on auto to change the max brightness. Are you sure it still wasn't on auto? Also, was it warm and possibly overheating and dimming the screen some? It also supposedly won't max out when charging.
I didn't think to check the brightness on the AT&T demo but it seemed bright enough in the brightly lit room. I believe one website speced it out at about the same nits as the DNA which I thought was bright enough, and much brighter than my Note 2.
I kind of wish phones had matte screens though. Then we wouldn't get the reflection in sunlight.
So when I'm on pornhub I can't see the happy endings with the dark screen?

It was all the way up. I then put it on auto and went down to 41, which is where my S5 lives...so dark. I then went all the way bright again and said to myself.....this is the level I'm used to.
I'll adjust to it I'm sure, but dunno why it doesn't go very bright.

Actually as someone who is thinking of purchasing the device I welcome this thread.
By the way, who the heck are you? I believe there are mods who police the threads, we dont need you chiming in.
It's just kind of funny the first thread you see in the verizon section is someone complaining about the brightness (who already has an s5) when it's been thoroughly covered that the screen doesn't go as bright as some would hope... I checked it out in the AT&T store the other day and it it was bright in there with lots of sunlight.. It never phased me that it was dim. And it most scenarios I am going to be in darker situations than the AT&T store.. I say enjoy your s5.. Party on.

As I told the other dude....My comparison to the S5 is only because that is what I have. I am ditching the S5 for the G3, so it's obvious I would look for what's better and where it lacks....So just because YOU think it's bright enough and wherever you say it was 'thoroughly covered' that there is a brightness concern, I guess that makes you sane and everyone else crazy.
Let people judge for themselves before you start scaring mass amounts of people away from buying the phone man. The title of the thread is a very in your face. My opinion is that it's bright enough for me.
The g3 gets around 450 nits at maximum brightness the s5 is around 500. Its not night and day difference so bfd. The s5 does get a little brighter in Sun light. But no one should be using max brightness indoors

There is an option to increase the contrast in the settings, it is set to a more natural tone to begin with. The S5 is majorly over saturated and although can be set to a higher temp then the G3 screen, it goes in line to the current trend of over-saturated screens as of late. Kick the contrast up on the G3 and see if that appeases your issues.
I would also like to add 450 nits is the v equivalent of 450 candlepower over one square meter or just imagine 450 candles lit in one square meter it is no slouch by any means. And Any real useable lcd in sunlight needs to be in the 1000 to 2000 nit range

It is not very bright and the contrast is not very good (it does not stand out though unless comparing next to each other). As per reviews and display analysis, this is part of the heat and power management of using a Qhd display with the current display panel tech LG uses. Each pixel has the same power efficiency as a 1080p panel, but twice the pixels to power up. Early next year we should see the second generation for Qhd panels that have the same power efficiency of 1080p displays now. Thing is 1080p will be even better, so still will have better battery life and performance.
Samsung will likely have less issues due to amoled tech using less power overall. Who knows though until the Note 3 and Prime release. Big battle brewing with Apple this fall.

What do you keep your display brightness at?
I left mine on auto since I got it bit now just changed it to 100%. Im gonna see how much worse it is on the battery because the trade off might be worth it for how awesome it looks at full brightness.

I gotta go full on bright at all times. Why buy a phone with an awesome screen and throttle the beauty of it. Plus somebody might be looking over your shoulder. HaHa!!
With both my Captivate and Infuse, I never used auto brightness. I always use 0% unless I'm outdoors, as these screens are really readable even in well lighted rooms.
I keep mine on 100 percent. I dont see the point of having such an amazing screen if i can't enjoy it at full capacity.....

Today my first day with the phone I left it at half way.
I have the brightness all the way down and its still really bright!
I use auto but at night in bed even at lowest setting its still pretty bright so I use an app called screen filter and dims the screen even lower then samsungs lowest setting. I would think this would save on battery life as well if you were to use this app more often?
Auto. I think this phone tends to be on the brighter side compared to others when on auto. I'm not saying that as a bad thing though, just an observation.

Probably due to the increased number of pixels/increased area. Even with the same output per pixel, the note will be brighter than say an infuse or a captivate because there are more pixels shining towards your eyes.
I keep mine below 10% unless I am in bright sunlight. The screen is easy to read and less brightness over such a large screen means far less power consumption. Just my humble two cents.

I don't think that using the screen at less than 100% diminishes its beauty. Most times, for me at least, 100% is way too bright. Also, using the screen at 0% will show much better battery life. I notice huge drain when using my Infuse at 100% for any amount of time. I can literally watch my percentage drop as I catch up on XDA posts and facebook/twitter. The display is easily the biggest drain of all for any phone, and using it on 100% will drain your battery even quicker. Just don't complain about crappy battery life when it happens please.
If battery life was unlimited and not a factor would you use full brightness at all times?
No, as I said, the screen is too bright at times. Having it at 100% also heats up the phone more quickly.
I keep mine at 100 all the time for the same reason other posters have stated. Why take away from the main selling point of the phone (at least it is to me). I suppose I'm lucky in that I have an office job and spend a good deal of time at my desk during the day. I can always plug in for an hour or two if I need to, but so far with the Note I haven't needed to. No heat issues either.
Like most other things android, it always comes down to personal preference.

There is a fair amount of glare, of course, but I was able to easily read emails in direct sunlight. One of the first things I tried on Friday when I got it...
Thanks for the reply - this has to be a huge upgrade over my HTC Tilt 2. I have to either find shade or cover it up with my hand. Hopefully with the Note I will not have to put on my reading glasses to see.

Enjoy while you can Ever heard of screen burn in? 100% brightness will only speed up the burn in. That's the same effect when you buy a Plasma TV and use the torch mode except AMOLED screens will burn in 10 times faster than Plasma screens.

Have been searching around to see if there is such a thing, but I can't find anything. Does anyone know if it would even be possible to make an app to make screen brighter than the factory max setting? I know it must depend, at least to some extent, on the hardware... but I doubt they actually max it out at the factory... i'm just sayin =) would be nice to have in bright sunlight!

I would imagine you could increase the brightness by upping the voltage of whatever controls it, but I'm not sure if there is a hardware cap or not. I doubt it would be very safe for the hardware though...

AMOLED screens don't have backlights.
It's not so much burn-in you have to worry about as burn-out - the individual LEDs are prone to do that if they have to display the same image or colour for long periods of time. Blue, for example, will burn out the fastest. There's a lot of discussion that went on around AMOLEDs for the earlier phones that used the screen tech, like the Nexus One and the SGS.
As for decreasing brightness, Screen Filter is the way to go.

Even if you do manage to find something to increase the max brightness, I wouldn't. There are usually caps on those things for a reason.

seriously though, compared to my fruit phone, the maxx leaves a little to be desired in direct sunlight. it's ok, but just could be better. in fact, i almost switched back to my 4s because of that ... bought a mophie juice pack air yesterday and thought ... oh yeah, 2 days of battery, even more than my maxx. .. then i see that ICS is allegedly hitting in a few days so figured i would wait it out. i can always return the mophie!!!

1) you are talking of low light, cause if you raise it, white will become much more whiter...
2) white on sgs2 is not white, is blueish... simply some people recognizes blueish white whiter than yellowish, is just subjective... but no one of both has a perfect whiter... if you want real colors, you have to go on ips based screens, not amoled
For lowering brightness, I use this app called Easy on the Eyes. It can reduce your brightness from the original lowest setting. If you have a mac, you can find it on the app store.
I just recently bought a refurb S2 from ATT as an upgrade. I also just read up on how these screens quickly burn out and leave imprints from static images. So for you guys that have had this phone since launch, how bad is it? Is it even noticeable?
I saw this video and it looks pretty terrible : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gdbTuMamqSA
Wow that's bad! Best way to protect yourself is to get a screenprotector...
Honestly, you have absolutely nothing to worry about. Burn in is about the same on most display panels. You would have to leave you screen on permanently for extended periods of time to experience anything like what the host of that video is talking about. This is the first I've even heard of it and I've had the same gs2 since launch.

At first it drove me crazy but you kinda get used to it and I now don't mind it.

i got my refurb from AT&T a little over a week and a half ago and my screen is pretty bad in low light conditions. i dunno if its screen burn in but there are noticeable blotches on the screen when dark images are shown. luckily you cant really see it during normal conditions.
The only devices I've ever seen with burn-in are store display units - which are kept with the screen on nearly all the time displaying the same damn thing.

The SG2 is especially bad about this since they usually don't play any "demo" on that model in the stores, the phone is kept on the home screen all hours of the day and night, or at least that's what the AT&T reps told me

Same here, got it release day and have had no problems. I usually keep auto brightness on but towards the dim side. Screen is plenty bright anyways.
I can vouch for amoled screens getting some burn in if you're not careful. My nexus one has a permanent mail box burned in from a text message reminder app that I used to use that would keep the screen awake with that static image. I'm sure all screens will do this though and I'm just more careful with this phone

The ICS launchers have caused burn in on my screen because of the app drawer launcher. You don't notice it unless you are on low light levels with a grey image though.

Unfortunately my camera was not good enough to pick up the difference. I scoured youtube and got this picture, and this is exactly how it looks. Vibrant is a bit cooler compared to One S in the picture. But Galaxy S3 display looks exactly the same. What do you guys think?
it's kind of hard to tell by picture but is it possible because your lights are dim? For whatever reason, GSIII default light settings are low...really low. Samsung is being cautious or something...I mean their Auto-brightness future sucks because of this, they make it really dim.
Hmm..Really?! The picture is pretty clear in showing the reddish tint on Galaxy S3 screen. But on that youtube video not a single comment about it. Makes me wonder if this is normal and I guess I am too used to the cooler blue tint on the Vibrant? It has been just a few days I got the phone and exchanging it at Walmart is not a problem, otherthan reinstalling all apps and other setup. But I just wanted to know if this is normal and if so I will be getting exactly identical phone and it is just gonna be a waste of time.

Thanks, your picture gives me some relief. The SG3 definitely has a warmer tone and I think at 30% brightness it makes the whites a little pink. This combined with the fact that I compared to blueish super bright screen of Vibrant may have caused my panic. The brightness of SG3 screen is definitely low, I mean minimum usable is 30% and you have to set it at 50-70% for most situations. Vibrant is super bright where i can use it even at 0% brightness and anything above 50% really hurt the eyes.
My GS3 does not look anything like that, you can easily see the pink in your display.
Defect, return it.

So here is my dilemma and I need some community input or advice. I have a GN2 titanium. I bought it at my employer Bestbuy. Thing is, there is a strange looking line that resembles a tear under the screen that is slightly curved and is about 3/4" long, maybe a tad more. You can ONLY SEE it when the brightness is turned ALL THE WAY DOWN and you are on a screen that is dark. Now if you go into the light with the darkness down all the way it goes away. Full brightness it cannot be seen. Not even at half brightness or 1/4 brightness can it be seen. Thing is I could easily return it BUT bestbuy stopped carrying the titanium on verizon the day they got it! Crazy right , in other words we are sold out of titanium and are not getting more in. I could always get a white one but I don't think I want a white one. Truth be told I think it's just bugging me and need to tell someone lol. If it was your GN2 would you for one even notice it,and if so would you just roll with it? I have to do all the steps above just to see it. I noticed it when watching on mx player in bed at night on low brightness. The touch screen works fine in that area and everything. I wish I could take a picture but I cant seem to get it to show up in a picture.
tl;dr ?
-Strange tear under glass
-causes no touchscreen/pen issues
-only viewable at 0 brightness , in the dark , on a dark image
-exchange for a white GN2
-live with it

Hmm you sure this isn't just the blotches that show up on amoled screens when it goes dark. If you shut the phone all the way off does the line go away. From what it sounds like without actually seeing the phone it sounds like what I described above. If it is. All the super amoled screens tend to do that

You bought it at Bestbuy. You guys have a really good return policy. Why not swap it out?

sounds pretty typical of an amoled screen they all suffer from it under very low brightness, I haven't noticed on mine may be because I stopped paying attention for it a long long time ago lol, after having a few phones with amoled screens.
I have the same issue. Even started a thread about it in the Q&A section. Glad I'm not the only one to have it lol

Yep both my Note 2's have the same problem, both are Titanium Gray. My brother got a launch day Marble White from the Verizon store and his screen is immaculate. Not a single black spot or line on his screen. We flipped the lights and tested them using the same app. Once our eyes adjusted, which didn't take more than 10 seconds, it was immediately clear the difference between my phone and his. His screen not only had a deeper black than mine, but it was free of any markings while mine looked brighter and had noticeable splotches all over.
Niiiiiiice.

I don't think the color of the devices have anything to do with it. But all amoled screens are different. I guess I since of the lucky ones mine performs great but had only one little dark spot right under the Samsung logo.
