OK, here are a few thoughts that can help you....
1. Are you aware of Knox? If yes, then good. Because installing custom recovery on your device will trip the Knox security fuse on your shiny new phone. If no, please read the thread entitled something along the lines of "survey for those who tripped Knox," and the thread devoted to rooting and not tripping Knox.
2. What is your software version? Please show your about phone screen (settings, general, about device). If you're not on the latest firmware, we'll get you there.
3. Your general trajectory of things once on the latest firmware version NC5 and you're OK with tripping Knox, which your question implies, should be...
-->Install recovery (TWRP or PhilZ CWM), latest versions can be found in the original development forum and Android development forum, respectively. Both are outstanding, none is best, neither is cross-compatible. Pick your poison.
-->Install a pre-rooted rom or just root your phone.
-->Have a blast
In closing, I highly recommend choosing a TouchWiz based rom before you flash any AOSP based variant, mostly because these will give you the closest to familiar feel without losing features.
There is no best except that which you like most.
Please report back with the info requested herein and we can block and tackle this, with the incredible resources hewn and stored here on xda.
No reason to depart from these fine forums to do that which is rightly done and freely available only here.

I would suggest as micmars has said you do a little reading on KNOX first. Then to get your feet wet, if you decide to go ahead and root your device. I would go with rooting the stock rom in your phone first, then add a custom recovery ( TWRP or PHILZ CWM ) . I run PHILZ CWM works great and its easy to use. Now once its rooted you can disable KNOX and remove the extra apps that you are not using that clog up the operating system ( OS ) of you device. This is called BLOATWARE go to this XDA site to get lists of safe to remove apps http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2770729 . Once you have done that now make a backup of your slimmed down De-Bloated OS. Now your ready to go and start installing custom roms, and if doesn't work out you can always recover your backup and get back to square one. Then try a another rom till you find one you like !!! :fingers-crossed:

OK so is it not recommended to use the all in one than and what is the latest version on these devices. Are there the same recurring issues with these as the n2 where once you update to the latest version bootloader you can't go back I.e. on n2 you couldn't downgrade to mk4 once you booted into the ne2 bootloader

First time installing a custom ROM, I need some hand holding

Hey folks.
The S4 is my first smartphone. Ever. I rooted it a few weeks ago and have been playing with different tools and utilities. I love the extra control it gives me.
Been using Smartlauncher Pro as my launcher as well, but it doesn't give me the customization I want. I dig the UI though, it's minimalist just the way I like.
I've been keeping my eye out for ROM's I can try out, and I think I want to try Cynogen for the S4. However, I am terrified of destroying my investment. I've read horror stories of flashes gone wrong... I don't want to permanently brick my device.
Is there anyone here who can hold my hand while I install my ROM? I seriously have no idea what I'm doing, instructions or no.
...I sound so pathetic right now.
Thanks folks.

Do you have a custom recovery installed like TWRP or CWM? If you do all you need to do is download the rom (I put them on ext sd)....and gapps if your flashing cyanogen, boot into recovery, make a backup (I put this on my ext sd card too), wipe, flash rom, flash gapps and reboot.

Hi!
The first thing you need to find out is what build number you have. This will tell you if you are able to root and install recovery in order to put a new rom on the phone. Do NOT update your phone by the over the air update that is currently available! To find your build number go to settings: the more tab: about phone, then scroll down. If you have JDQ39.I545VRUAME7 then you are in the same boat as many of us and accidently did the upgrade which at this moment has no way to root. If you haven't done the upgrade than you need to find one of the many threads on here that will walk you through the process.
Hope this helps some, there are others on here that can give you a much more detailed walkthrough of how to root if you are on the correct older build.
The best advice I can give is to read the entire original post (OP) for the ROM you like, and as much of the thread as you can. 9 times out of 10 when someone has a problem with the ROM it's been discussed, and is often listed in the OP. Usually there are step by step instructions on installing the ROM. I believe there's a general ROM flashing guide in this forum somewhere as well.
Good luck and have fun :good:

That's good! You haven't been updated which means you can still flash ROMs. Are you familiar with both types of ROMs, TouchWiz and AOSP? CyanogenMod is an AOSP ROM, which will be completely different from what you're running right now, TouchWiz. You're rooted, but have you installed a custom recovery? You need one to flash ROM's, either TWRP or CWM. You can also make a nandroid backup in recovery, and if anything goes wrong, you can go back to exactly how you are now. Definitely read the OP of the ROM thread multiple times and follow the flashing instructions correctly.

If anything goes wrong with the flash in the next step, go to restore and you'll be back to how you are now.
Did you download the ROM to your phone along with Gapps? For AOSP Roms you need a separate gapps package, which is Google apps.

Oh wells, flash anyway! That's what I do!
Worst case scenario, you have to use Odin to get back to stock. I used to keep a nandroid on my PC for just in case scenarios as well. One time on my GNex I flashed something really bad and had to adb pull everything off my phone, wipe the whole thing, and start over.

Thread cleaned of useless comments.
Thread is also closed - as XDA, even though full of helpful and nice people, is not a direct support site.
Users are expected to do some reading before they post and blatantly ask for hand holding. And, as you have seen, other users have a tendency to not be so nice and make trolling comments because of that.
This is a development site and is about development - so, please, study up first, then post questions based from what you have learned.

For people that need help (NEW TO ANDROID)

I want to post this thread to help those of you
who are new to android and to the Galaxy S4.
There are many videos on how to do kool things
to your S4, but most of them don't include the
Verizon version of those kool new things. If you
need help and you are relatively new, I ca listen
to your questions and help you out. Most of the
developers are too busy doing other things so we
can have kooler things for our devices, they don't
need another task to take upon their shoulders.
Thank you all developers for Giving us the great
power that comes with Android.
Don't take this the wrong way, but something about this post makes me hope that you'll only be pointing people in the direction of the proper guide, not trying to explain it.

No. That's not how android works. It's not like an iPhone where all of the updates come from apple. Android updates don't come from Google unless you own a Nexus device or a GE device. They usually come from the OEM and carrier. And it's not universal. You can't apply an update from another carrier on your device. The only thing you could do at this point is to install a custom recovery like TWRP or CWM. I think there are a few ROMs in development that have a 4.3 base, but that's it. Also, you can't maintain the MDK version and also update to 4.3. They're two completely different versions with many of the components being different, including the bootloader and recovery.

If you don't like any of the ROMs you'll have to wait for a prerooted Android 4.3for Galaxy S4 to come out.

Thanks for your willingness to help out folks newer to Android.
thanks for the info. my gs4 is rooted on mdk with goomanager's recovery. i have been happy with touchwiz so far, so i haven't flashed any other roms yet. i disabled the OTA update with titanium backup but i am a little curious about the VRUAME7 update. what exactly is the deal with that, you can root but not use a custom recovery (so your stuck on touchwiz) or can i get a rooted version of it and have recovery too while enjoying whatever the new updates are.
I have one question for everyone. Depending on the answers I get, the if it aint broke dont fix it rule will apply. So here it goes. (fingers crossed)
I was on Beans MDK Rom with stock kernel and decided to try Darkslide Rom. My phone didnt like the that rom so I flashed back to Beans using my nandroid backup using TWRP. Everything is working fine with no issues at all. Here is where my question comes. I looked at my baseband and it show ME7. Why? My backup should have put me on MDK...right? How I get baseband back to MDK? Anyone have suggestions?

If you have a device that wasn't officially updated to ME7 then you can flash any of the ME7 roms in the dev section. You'll enjoy the new features such as apps2sd and you can flash the ME7 modem separately (Darkslide flashes it for you).

The baseband refers to the modem which isn't changed by flashing most roms or restoring nandroids. However, since Darkslide flashes it alongside the rom (only rom that does this) that is why your baseband changed to ME7. You can get back the MDK modem in a few threads but there is an easy one to find in the second post of the BoneStock rom.

How do I tell which build the phone is at the store
Hi,
I'm new to android and all internet phones.
I'm using a relic right now Motorola e815 with just the phone (text blocked) and I need to get a GS4 for Verizon. I modified my e815 7 years ago, so I could put ringtones on it from the card, but the state of the art (SOTA) curve seems a bit steep with never having used an android phone.
I would like to get the GS4 root it and put custom ROMs on it. From what I read currently, I think this can be done only on the expensive developer phones, or pre ME7 builds.
My questions are:
How do I tell which build the phone has at the store so I can tell if they are selling ME7 or not? Another thread from today said the stock 16gb phones at the store a few days ago when he got his were all pre ME7. Another thread on another board said try asking for the least popular color. OK, but how do I quickly check what the build version is. Yes I've UTFSE, but I must not be calling something by the correct name in the search engine.
Also how do I make sure the CSA does not update the phone and that there is no automatic update before I get home and turn it off? I don't want to find a phone I can root and ROM, but have some idiot screw it up for me by doing the OTA or it happening on my way home from the store. Also if I go to get an app from ? (titanium backup) to turn off autoupdate, do I risk it automatically updating before I can get the chance to root it?
Thank you very much for any help your suggestion you have to offer me and anyone else reading this.

I can answer SOME of your question... I believe that there is really no way to know if the phone has the me7 update on it without turning it on to check... I'm sorry.... I got my phone around the same time the new update was coming out. You can always ask the store assistant to try to set up the phone while you're in the store, that way you can quickly set it up... then go to settings/more/about phone/build number to check if the last three characters are me7 or not...... Although it would be hard to find a way out of that if you find out it has the me7 update.......
If you know for sure that the phone does not have me7 on it for sure..... turn all data off ... wi-fi, moble network... etc.... and download Titanium Backup apk to your computer..... from there you can transfer it to an sd card or USB it to your phone and install it manually....... BUT... for the app to work you have to be already rooted.... so before you buy the phone you need to watch this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gm3jw3hft1g and follow all instructions for the downloads... You dont nee a network connection to root.... DO NOT TURN YOUR DATA/WI-FI CONNECTION UNTIL YOU FOLLOW ALL I'M TELLING YOU..... once you are rooted SUCCESSFULLY..... run titanium backup find "SDM 1.0" click on it and freeze it!... this will make it so Titanium Backup will Deny the process that pushes the updates.... ater THE APP HAS BEEN FROZEN. You can turn the data back on.... Having done this... you are now able to install the Loki hack and flash ROMs... instructions for Loki hack= http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nc_Mh_nNPPw ...... if you have any more questions... PLEASE ASK.... Good Luck. so review...................... ALSO if you need very extremely thorough instructions on how to use Titanium backup see this video. "" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZEa10WtFng
1. Find GS4 without me7
2. Turn off all data
3. Root GS4
4. Download Titanium Backup.apk to PC
5.Transfer apk to phone storage
6. Install Titanium Backup manually on GS4
7. Find "SDM 1.0" and Freeze it
8. You are now safe from me7 update
9. Turn data back on if wished
10. Loki hack bootloader
11. GO CRAZY!!!

[Q] Upgrade From MDK - Don't Care About bootloader

I've been trying hard to find the answer and I just can't - I searched these threads for a while.
I currently have Galaxy S4 with MDK which is rooted and has the unlocked bootloader.
I have SDM and SEAndroid frozen on Titanium Backup.
I want to un-freeze those and upgrade to the newest version but still keep my root and all of my root apps. I don't care about the unlocked bootloader - all the root apps I use don't have anything to do with using the bootloader (well I have twrp installed but don't use it).
Can I use OTA Rootkeeper, unfreeze SDM and SEAndroid and take the OTA update? Will I still have root access (again remember, I don't need to have unlocked bootloader)?
I ask because I'm very happy with everything on my phone the way it is - I like where my apps are, I like everything. I don't want to bother flashing roms - I just have no interest. I want to do the update and have everything the way it was and all my folders in their place (less the unlocked bootloader) and still have root for my programs like Titanium Backup and Greenify. super su - etc.
Please - any help would be appreciated.
Afaik, taking the update will ineed cost you your current root. However, I am on stock 4.3 and root using vroot and then used a script to uninstall the foreighn superuser app and add supersu. I have experienced no ill effects as of yet, though some would say that they aren't comfortable using this root method. There is no evidence to support it being entirely safe nor malicious in intent. It does provide root and you can keep all your apps data. Though...if you take the update, I would strongly suggest a factory reset to decrease potential problems...just my 2 cents buddy
Unlocked bootloader??? You should tell us how you did it so you can collect the huge bounty

The bootloader is technically only bypassed through a Loki exploit, not unlocked.
For all intents & purposes that doesn't change anything to most users so I don't know what Richii was trying to get at.

My whole thing is I would really rather not do a factory reset??
Not sure what richi is getting at or if he actually read my post (mdk)?

I read it clearly, you said you had an "unlocked" bootloader so I was curious on what process you used to unlock it.

I have an MDK so I don't need it. But please do someone a favor, don't kill that MDK S4. Either just flash a rooted 4.3 that was designed for your MDK device, or sell it to someone so they have the opportunity to play with it. There are a ton of people on this forum stuck on the newer versions that would kill to get what you have.

I won't kill it if I knew how to upgrade stock rom without losing my apps and data - lol. That's really my problem. Looks like there's a stock rom here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2517611 - but there are so many files there. I have no idea what to do or which one to download? I don't know what Loki'd Kernel is or Aroma installer, deodexed, etc etc (and I don't have the time) - I just want to upgrade and keep my apps and data the way they are - lol. If after I upgrade it's no good - I'll go back to my backup.
I have MDK with TWRP installed.
Thanks!

Backup your apps & data using TiBu, then flash a stock 4.3 rom.

I can walk you through the steps of flashing a ROM buddy, just PM me. I'll look around for a good 4.3 but it would be preferable for you to find a ROM that suits your needs. There are definitely a couple 4.3 options available, check 'em out and let me know if you want to proceed.

[Q] Updated to 4.3. Is it too late to root?

So I had plugged my device in to my computer, and it updated to 4.3. I did a factory reset, but it is too late. Does this mean my bootloader is now locked without a way to unlock at the moment? I came across ★ [Rom][I605VRUEMJ9][4.3] Stock Root Odex/Deodex [12/08/13]★ - xda-developers but it appears that I need an unlocked bootloader in order to flash it. Any advice on what I can do? I tried the instructions at Root I605VRUEMJ9 - Verizon Galaxy Note 2 SCH-I605 Android 4.3 Jelly Bean Firmware | True Android | #1 Custom Android Resource but got a failed (and am now worried that the KNOX counte ris stuck at 0x1.

For the moment, yes. Attempting to return to a previous stock ROM, even via ODIN, will fail - I tried this myself last night. ODIN hangs on trying to install the last part of the ROM (the bootloader, if I remember right). If you do try to use ODIN to restore a stock ROM, you will need to run a repair install of the 4.3 ROM (you'll lose all data on the phone). Fun stuff.
So in short, we're locked & unrooted if we update using the official update via Verizon's update software.

Damn. So I am completely willing to wipe everything. I already have everything backed up. If I am willing to have everything wiped, is there a way around it, or just wait for the good folks here at xda to stick it to Verizon

You can try to root with kingo (google it, xda won't allow links to it) but you may be out of luck on unlocking the bootloader again unless someone finds another exploit.

I saw references to kingo, but it looked sketchy. Can you tell more about it, and perhaps why XDA doesn't allow links?

Nothing I can tell you that you can't find searching for it. Plenty of conversations about it already. No need for another one really.

Thanks - I did find a lot threads. It does look sketchy, though nothing definitive.
Unless someone has found a root method for one of the other Samsung 4.3 builds, you better go out to your nearest wholesale store and buy the jumbo size of Vaseline.

Kingo works on Note 3. Obviously different device but in theory it should work.

Ditto here. Though trying to flash a recovery (say, through Goo Manager) trips the Knox counter....and fails to boot ('unauthorized software' message)

Yup. Bootloader is locked. That's why there's a sticky saying not to take OTA's.

Aren't both the S4 and N3 4.3 builds rooted? Maybe you're thinking bootloader unlocking???
After OTA my n2 lost root.
I can also confirm, that Kingo roots the N2 after taking the Verizon OTA, but the bootloader remains locked. For me acquiring root again was great, because I use the Xposed framework a lot and many other apps that need root. As for the bootloader, I'm sure that sooner or later, one of the great devs will kick butt and get it unlocked. For those guys that challenge is like an itch.

Wouldn't bet on it. S4 and Note 3 are both locked and will likely remain that way. Never say never but the likelihood is slim.
You're right and honestly as long as I have, root I don't care much anymore. If it happens great, if it doesn't ok. Sooner or later we will upgrade to a new toy. Lol

A few questions before I root

Hello again all, I just have a few questions about rooting my sprint gn2 before i get started. I have found several instructional guides through xda (thanks to all that post them would be lost without ya!) however i am concerned because i am running the new updated version that some of these methods may cause me some issues. I suppose my question is most of these guides were made quite some time ago, and this update has only been around a few months now, is it safe to follow for example this guide http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9zF6x1MURM&hd=1&list=SPwCVKEYxr_z7FBQYT32dbYw_kdSJmSDH2Do I need to revert back to a prior update somehow? I have searched for a few hours now and there does not seem to be much information on rooting the device after the latest update. Looking forward to running custom roms thanks for the help.
PS if there is anything you think i should know before starting feel free to chime in i will definitely send a thanks your way!
PSS I see that 4.3 locks down the bootloader completely.... this is bull****...... Anyone know whether the phone i get through insurance when i "break" my phone would come loaded with 4.3 as well?

You should check the sprint forums and maybe this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2591523.
Edit: I'm not sure all about kingo so I can't give any suggestions.
Thank you, I had read about kingoroot and am sure that is the route i will be taking (as it is my only choice) however would i still be able to backup using twrp? will i still be able to flash custom roms? these are really the only two things i care for doing.. and running root only apps like titanium backup but that is a given. Thanked for your help btw.
Cheers

That I'm not sure. You would no longer have unlocked bootloader and I always thought the two ways to have custom recovery were if bootloader was unlocked or via a safestrap method. You would have root so I'd check and see if recoveries exist for sprint note ii after this root method of 4.3
I believe you would be unable to flash a new rom/kernel as they require a custom recovery to do so, and with out a unlocked boot loader you wouldn't be able to get a custom recovery.

+1... go to the Sprint forum for the best answer. Each carrier's version on the phone is slightly different.
