Let it cool off. It's minor stuff that gets it hot too: I have a black otterbox commuter on mine and it overheats when I sit on my phone texting with like 5-7 apps running in the background such as Snapchat, SMS app, What's App, Contacts, Settings, Facebook, or Instagram. Gmail, Yahoo Mail, Lookout, Wifi (off when at work), Hangouts, Twitter, and Google + are considered my background apps since they update in real time when I get messages or notifications. I hardly use it for gaming or any CPU/GPU power hogging. The device sits in my pocket for prolonged periods of time and is only a week old. It can get to even 50 degree celsius at times for little activity.

Yeah, I was just asking to see if you were playing games when it gets hot, but I see you don't. This might seem dumb, but is the weather hot where you live? If it's hot and the phone is in a tight pocket, it's going to get hot.
But if it isn't, maybe something is using your GPS...that makes the phone pretty hot quickly.

Nah, it's a fair point, but moot in my case since I am indoors at work since I work in an office and I am in an ac at home. Hardly outside much, but the temperatures are like 90 degrees fahrenheit. So roughly 32-33 degree celsius I think. I don't use NFC, GPS, or anything much at all. I turned off a lot of the extra smart features too. Only game that I have played w/ "high graphics" is Temple Run 2 on lowest settings. I took it to T-Mobile to get a diagnostic, but the guy said the case causes it to overheat and my dad says his Note 3 overheats, but my Note 3 never overheated unless I downloaded like 30 apps at once. I have a black otterbox, which the color does trap heat. I went to get it swapped out today, but the Kiosk told me that I had to go to a corporate store. I will go tomorrow. I might just swap out the phone to another device or another S5. They want to charge a $50 restocking fee for swapping the device. I love the S5, but the overheating is just awkward and unnecessary and excessive.

Swap it out, and if it still heats up, then just get another phone if you can. Try without the case first though...I don't have a case, so maybe thats why mine doesn't heat up much.

I am afraid they might not since their diagnostic tool didn't show problems on Wednesday night. I think I will ask them to. If not, I'll ask for them to waive the restocking fee or meet me half way and take the HTC One M8.

Really? I had the M7 and that would heat up pretty fast, but I heard the M8 runs a lot cooler, so maybe it'll work out for you.
Try a few different kernels, some seem to run hotter than others. Happens to me all the time kernel hopping...lol
Good luck.

Mine started overheating about three days ago after working fine (I've had it about a month). The battery would drain after a few hours without use and anytime I used an app it would start heating up. Everything is stock. I did a factory reset and reloaded my apps. It seems to be working fine now but I'm going to watch it for a few days.
The only times I have noticed it getting hot was when I use Google Maps..I have been using Project Infinitiy and Alliance ROMs and only stock kernels.

It happened on stock twice. 120+ degree fahrenheit on the phone with no apps in task manager. Swapped to the HTC One, which has its fair share of problems with the LED light and duplicate texts.

not sure about anyone else but Just got my GS3 from sprint and turn on to activate n is working fine but the phone is getting hot. Any calibration need it? plus I'm not feeling the physical home button.
I still wish it had a dedicated camera button. I was once an iPhone owner... so the home button doesn't bother.
Mine gets warm, obviously more-so when charging. But nothing alarming yet.

I can tell you that this is not normal. My GS2 E4GT does not even get warm with heavy usage. Thanks for your input.
My Galaxy S III gets warm on just normal browsing for like 30minutes(?).
Charging, obviously, makes it a bit warmer.
My phone gets hot as a ***** when I use navigation.

thats funny because the snapdragon s4 chip was made to not get as hot as the older s3 chips did. my old SII got up to 107 to 110. the hottest ive seen this phone is 95. my old galaxy nexus was the worst. it got HOT 140's at times. this phone doesnt get any where over 95... so... there u have it... its nothing to be alarmed about. this is actually an improved product.
I found the phone got pretty warm when I used it without having the power savings on (found in settings).
Once I turned that on it nearly doesn't get as warm as it did. I'm not sure if anyone else noticed that or not.

I ran it hard on my way from work today.
Conditions:
Navigation
100% brightness
Google music - streaming
Charging on Car Dock
Outside temp - 91F
Windows down, air off
Duration 20 mins
Temp maxed out at 113F
I'm not rooted yet but i use to have to put a limit through setCPU at 140F on my Mt4G. It constantly ran around 120F. This result is amazing, must be the better processor.

Good for you.
at least its not as bad as the iphone trust me haha that thing is bad!
Got up to 119F today, stupid hot day though. Extreme conditions, on my dash car dock. Normal usage is around 92F.
Casing definitely transfers heat well. My old Mt4G had the metal back and even at hotter temps you could barely physically feel it. Being thinner too probably doesn't help.

Mine gets warm, but not hot. My iphone used to get really warm where it would shut off, this has yet to get anywhere near that.
keep in mind that the S3 is a powerhouse phone. the S3 can match the processing power of some low end computers, and think about it.. those low end computers have a large fan. I would get a task manager and as long as your phone isnt constantly above 110 or maybe even 105 you should have nothing to worry about.

The battery?
---------- Post added at 01:32 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:26 PM ----------
Ok lol I thought 105.3 on the battery was hot, but glad to see its not just me. its funny how with all these advancements in mobile gpu technology I still don't think it out performs my intel hd 3000 integrated graphics. Thanks to the android x86 I was able to run antutu on my intel core i5 2450m @2.5 ghz and scored a 21000. I highly doubt it was accurate as Im sure it isn't optomized and it fails to make use of turbo boost. Given this isn't a low end computer, but I still don't think we are that close. Apparently the new ipad's gpu is 30 percent slower then the on in the wii.
Okay so I'm switching from my incredible 2 and ordered a rezound and it came like 3 days ago and my 4g sim card hasn't come yet so the rezound hasn't even been activated. So one day I picked up the phone and it was really hot. I thought that was weird since the phones screen was off and it wasn't charging. I just want to know if its normal or not? I ordered a 1980mah slim acesoft battery just in case.
Many people have reported hot phones, but I myself have never had it get above 100. Check to see what is running in the background.
I can get mine to 114 easily just by playing music and surfing the web. Won't go higher though. I tried. And bad signal will cause it to overheat like a mother f'er. I have the extended battery and had 65% no signal, after only 13 hours with 20 minutes screen on time I'm at 37%. Its awful. Never had this issue with any other phone. Looking at the nexus or maxx currently as nothing I do improves battery. Prior I was on sprint with the evo shift. Single core always overclocked to 1.6ghz it was a rocket and only overheated when I really pushed it super hard. But never to higher than 109. This phone is just rubbish. Also to more directly answer your question yes it will become a pocket warmer at times for no reason. Im on slim rom with literally NOTHING syncing automatically. And it still heats up like its trying to do something.

I've noticed with my old dinc and this rezound that they will get hot as the battery gets very low.
My current setup with Newt's One X runs cool on my phone. The only time I see it heat up (105) is when I'm doing stuff in recovery.

Seems like overheating Rezounds are more common than normal. I've never had a problem unless I'm playing an intense game.
If you put a case or skin on the battery appears to get hotter due to heat buildup and transfer. Make sure any case has matching holes the same as the battery cover. Just sayin.
Can anybody explain to me why all of the sudden my battery life has sucked. I have had WolfROM for about two weeks and battery life was normal. Then around 3 days ago my battery just won't last. I don't know what the deal is. I did spend the week in the mountains of Georgia where it was constantly searching for service so it got really hot. I assume that is what killed it?

I don't know I would like to know this is as well. Where I live I get bad cellular reception (even though we have 4g in some spots, weird right?) and have the worst battery life ever. Maybe bad cellular reception/searching for service a lot kills the battery. Can anyone confirm?

Download badass battery (I think it might be gsam battery now) and see if there are any apps sucking battery if not then the heating probably did cause it
use betterbatterystats for partial wakelocks and monitor running apps and keep to a minimal if they don't cache over

I would expect it to. In your particular situation, the easiest route to an answer is to put it in airplane mode for several hours and compare.
Also, if it really bugs you, get one of the apps the other guys have suggested.
Although it seems to happen less frequently, sometimes an app update keeps the phone awake.

On mine the download manager was using as much power through wake locks as the screen was. Disabled that ***** and turned off force gpu rendering in the developer options for good measure. It made all the difference.
My phone was over heating and losing charge extremely fast. I decided to try something random and put some of the aluminum off the back of a laptop LCD between the phone and the battery. It seems to keep the phone much cooler and the charge holds a lot longer. I can play Finaly Fantasy 3 now for a few hours without the phone getting hot anymore. Don't know if it will work for everyone but it seems to be working for me.

They wanted me to let them replace mine, but I told them to **** off. I'm not giving them a new phone for a refurb. That is one thing they could definitely use some improvement on. If you sell me a faulty device don't try to give me a refurb, give me a new phone.

Nah, the battery can breath fine. The insulating aluminum is actually between the physical phone (sim card and all the interals) and the battery. The battery is completely open on the back. The phone itself is also not getting hot anymore so I don't really know. It used to get so hot that the screen itself was hot to the touch and so was the plastic cover on the back. The battery actually has the paint missing in the pattern of the lines of the rear cover from being so hot. I am sure the battery is at least partially cooked but it made it a full 12 hours today on one charge, thats up from 4 hours.

Results are skewed for the day, I pulled the battery to replace the aluminum. I didn't have any scissors yesterday so I wound up with a rough looking piece of aluminum that I had to tear apart to make fit. I cut it to fit today so its a much nicer fit and it still has some adhesive from where they glued it to the monitor. I'll let it burn down all day tomorrow and post the stats. I had wifi and google maps running evidently though during that time. I know I talked for around an hour and a half on it and I was in the office most of the day with nothing to do so I probably spent two hours texting.

You'd enjoy using the HTC One X then, normal use it easily reaches 42ºc, extended use and/or heavy use can see the phone reach 55ºc so for me, that's a welcome change.
I should be receiving the Z2 tomorrow anyway so I'll post my findings then.

Water resistant coating will always trap more heat inside, maybe that's why Sony uses the slightly lower clocked SD801.

I think that would be a reasonable assumption.
I guess the only question is whether it's a deal breaker or not.
Does increased temperature effect battery life at all?
I noticed this happening recently but on rare occassions. It gets hot right where the camera is located but I'm not sure if it is related to the camera or some other app. I know that it overheats when recording 4K videos over 3 minutes. The quick fix when it heats up is to restart the device so to me it is definitelty software realted.

Coming from the Galaxy Note 2, when my phone got warm it indicated that there was a problem. Maybe since this is part of the design, with the waterproofing at all, I'll just have to learn to accept that the phone will get a little warm.
On the plus side, it'll be good for the winter, to warm up the hands

Most definitely.
Well i can asure you that all snapdragon 800 soc overheat and it depends on what you do,my curent device lg G2 when i bought it,it had jellybean on it whne browsing web listening to music etc it always got hot,but when plating games it was a very big overheating ,the procesor got up to 72`C ad baterry was on 42`C and i thought it was a problem with the phone but after updating to kitkat all problems with overheating where gon even in graphinc intense games it took the phone 30 minutes to heat up significantly + on a side note the battery got a lot better i managed 4 hours and 36 minutes of screen time.
Botom line its a software problem coupled with the nano coting(it blocks heat but not in a bad way that the phone will overheat from that maybe a 5`C block).
Overheating is the reason I didn't get the G2.
It overheated doing basic stuff.
It can't be fixed by software. LG certainly didn't release a fix, so don't expect one for the Z2.
When a phone has overheating problems then it will always have it, just like a laptop or any other hardware.
You'll have to deal with it.

Well not really my m7 used to get warm / hot with 3g or gaming up to 42c after sense 6 it refuses to go above 35c and when gaming up to 39c , so far only known phone that doesn't get hot is the m8. Imo it's tolerable for z2 to stay warmer then other devices , glass isn't the best option for cool phone + sealed phone due water resistance.
Btw yes warm / hot phones have shorter battery life due heat issues , warmer battery = faster discharge rate.
Imo if z2 gets hot only when gaming it's fine, all phones get warm but if it's crossing 37/38c up to 40+ on WiFi and normal usage I'd call that a problem. You can forget the gaming if this is the case lol , at least stable gaming without fps loss and throttle.
The overheating when using the camera is a bit of a concern, especially since that was one of the main reasons i bought the phone.
Is it definitely software related or hardware?
As if its software i can wait for a fix, but if its hardware then i'll need to swap phones
After reading other device forums seems like all the Snapdragon 800/801 devices have the overheating issue: SGS5, Z2, G2, etc.
I think it's because the new SoC is so powerful that it generates a lot of heart, especially when gaming.
Maybe the 805 will fix this. Not gonna buy a device with 800/801 because almost all of them have overheating issues.
Just bought a Samsung S6 Edge, my first venture into samsung devices since before I purchased my first HTC the G1. I have always been an HTC fan but I thought this phone look pretty special and so I took the plunge.
Since then however I have been nothing but disappointed. When I first started to use the phone it was very responsive and the screen and features are very impressive, however my HTC M8 is at the moment considerably faster with Lollipop 5.02 and M9 ported software than my S6 Edge despite having considerably more power. When I open the smart case the screen only turns on for 1 second then turns itself off, the phone is laggy and it can take some apps several seconds to launch. Side by side with my M8 it just isn't coming close using the same setup and the same apps.
After having brushed of the fiasco over the charger of my Samsung Gear Live watch breaking the rear of the watch I am not sure I trust Samsung?
What is wrong with this device??
I came from the HTC One M8 and s6 Edge is faster.
Maybe you got a defective device?
I have no lag at all on mine and I haven't heard anyone complain about lag so far.
Its not laggy, you're laggy!
Mine has been lagging considerably and overheating quite a bit. It's very frustrating. Also, the battery is terrible.

My HTC has always lasted a day with plenty to spare, my S6 requires charging as soon as I get home

Huh?? strange response!
I will just leave this...so you know I'm not blowing smoke. All that on netflix and on data LTE only. I easily hit 14-18 hrs on battery daily.
Edit 5hr 58mins on Netflix....

Your issues point to a rouge app. It sounds like the app is sucking CPU time constantly and thus your phone is overheating. This also causes big time lag and battery drain. Get an app like GSAM or Better Battery to see which app is causing the issue and then kill the app!!

Downloaded GSAM and the root companion. No apps are killing my battery. The leading culprit is Android System.
could be the no sleeping bug..please check if your phone hits the sleep...

Download Better Battery Stats and see what your leading kernel wake lock is. Mine was something no one had heard of and Google had NO info about. It kept my phone awake 60% of the time or more - no amount of flashing stock firmware or factory resetting helped. I had to exchange the device. The wakelock in my case was lli_pm_wlock

Oh wow. I've got the exact same issue. So this is something that can only be remedied by replacement?
Your chart looks crazy. They're ALL at 100%. I'd return it if flashing stock firmware didnt fix it.
Use smart switch to back up your apps and data, then use it to reinstall the firmware. Restore your apps/data and see if you're fixed. You'll be all stock again but its worth a shot before doing the return.
Maybe it's caused by memory link.
I believe all this lagging issue is caused by memory link. My Ram is always on 87% (2.2 GB of Ram) yet i'm not running any app, sometimes i tap and it doesn't respond, then after a couple seconds it responds to all the taps made which drives it nuts. Otherwise, i love it, it's very fast and smooth most of the time. Been a fun of HTC for years, S6 Edge is my first Samsung Phone and i don't regret changing. Hope they fix the few problems some of us got.
