I know this sounds weird but I have an old Galaxy S3 that I'm giving to my mother. It will be her first smartphone so I really don't want to complicate my life or hers. I'm also giving my father my old Optimus 4X running ICS (also his first smartphone). I'll be teaching them how to use them, and providing support, so I'd rather have them on the same Android version instead of getting "why doesn't my phone do this?" all the time. Also, last I checked, the Samsung-based JB roms for the S3 were horribly slow.
The S3 is rooted, and I have been looking at the ROM section and all I can find are JB and KK roms, no ICS. Is there any lightweight Samsung ROM (because stock Android has some issues on the S3 and I can't deal with that) based on ICS that you would recommend?
Thanks in advance

afaik ics roms on s3 do not have the sudden death fix, and therefor are not recommended. imagine what would happen if your mother's "new" phone goes off and never switches on again
so better use a jb 4.3 rom if you want it to be stock. debloated they are quite fast.

You can also get JB on your old LG device so that your mother isn't confused. It should work just fine, mainly if your parents aren't using their device at their full potential (like, if they only use it for texting, phone calls, etc, you can free up some space and get faster by uninstalling most of the unused apps). But I think too that JB has several fixes that are quite handy (like the sudden death fix).

um.. sorry if this has been asked alot of times but i didnt find any answers to my question.
So is a rooted fully unlocked running the best custom rom (i can chose any rom i want) and all the mods n tweaks motorola photon 4g better or is the stock samsung galaxy s2 better?? (i wont be tampering with the s2 because its got warranty here in india unlike the photon).
My college buddy saw my photon 4g (im running cna rom (ics) with all the mods) and he actually offered me his samsung galaxy s2 in exchange for my phone so should i exchange it or not?
And one more question has anyone from india tried the 3g speed hack settings on the latest roms?

If you plan on keeping the s2 at stock, then stick with the photon. If you really enjoy having a good selection of custom roms and kernels then go with the s2. But honestly, having a buttload of roms is overrated because at a certain point they are all reiterations of one another with certain mods added (that can easily be done by an end user) on top of official cm, aokp, cna, aosp, etc builds. We have all of these (except aosp), which is more than enough for any flashaholic. Also, take into consideration that the drivers we have been anticipating for so long are about to drop into our laps, making our 4.x builds near flawless. All things considered, mixed with the superior hardware and build quality of the photon, i would stick where you are at. If after we get the official ics upgrade with kernel and drivers you still arnt completely satisfied with the phone and the roms we have, then consider such a trade. But things are about to get really interesting up in here when that release drops, stick around and enjoy the show.
OK.. I'll stick with the photon I guess then I actually like the build of photon better than s2 the only reason I considered his offer was because s2 costs a lot more than photon here on eBay so I thought I could exchange sell profit buy another photon .
Oh so we're getting the official ics for photon hmm.. the thing I hate about Motorola Is they suck at UI design. I hope the official pics release will be good looking and not laggy like the stock ginger bread
First of all, let me apologize if this has been asked before. I did numerous searches but could not find any relevant information.
I'm currently on an Omega Jellybean Rom but I'm quite unsatisfied with the experience I'm getting from my phone. Samsung Dialer/Contacts and Messenger are slow to open and it doesnt really quite feel like a phone running Jellybean (yes ive tried alternative apps such as exdialer with the missed call patch).
I recall the JB experience i got from my galaxy i9003 (crappy asian galaxy S) which was a lot more enjoyable/smoother than what im getting now on the S3. Therefore the plan to switch to PA
Now the question is, aside from the issues mentioned on the PA thread (camera getting stuck when taking pics w/ front cam, no FM out, no TV out) are there any other issues or things that I'll be trading off by switching to PA?
Can I get a general consensus regarding PA vs sammy roms? Advantages/Disadvantages? Looking forward to your input

I'd suggest you give Viking Rom a try, I'm a fan of trim Roms and Vikings weighs in a 425 meg, is super smooth and battery life is outstanding.
Viking is a JB rom. I have never experienced any of the issues you mention with the ROM.

I am a big fan of Paranoid Android, always used their ROM, but recently changed to Omega due to Dualboot compatibility, and to be honest, it is a lot more stable than other ROMs I have found.
Omega v2.0 is awsome with the aosp/aokp UI style and Omega v29 is the standard Android UI. Worth doing a Dual Boot with the both of them.
Hi everybody
Recently I noticed a large interest in the subject custom ROM for Mega. Especially a lot was written about the AOSP. Please express, what do you expect after installing such ROM and why you do not like TW?
Another thing are stock ROM's stripped of almost all s-apps and other software deemed unnecessary in order to recover memory. Please share your opinions on the advisability of such action. Did you really needed all this reclaimed memory?

I expect most of the new features for S4 and Note 3 to be available in this ROM.
I still dont know if we can expect full 4.3 update. Some web sites claim that Mega wont receive this "Premium package" update whatever that means. I dont think that Mega 6.3 is a mid class smartphone and it would be plain stupidity if we stay out of good updates. So very important part for a custom RoM is the availability of the latest Samsung goodies from the flagman like S4 for instance.
Also I think that TW is not so bad, I like its interface.

Hmm, I was asking about expectation towards AOSP custom ROM-s as such CM or MIUI. As you probably know, many futures in Samsung stock ROM depends heavily on TW. Massive striping stock Samsung ROM from all s-apps could even cripple your phone. But installing AOSP ROM will means clean-out all samsung dependencies, so there will be not possible to run futures from S4 or GN3. maybe I'm wrong, let somebody correct me.
I think so TW is not so bad either and was curious why some people are so opposed to it. I was user of Motorola Defy which actualization stops on Android 2.3 so custom ROM's were only alternative. Now I am not so eager to strip my Mega to bare AOSP.
Yeah I missed the point of AOSP rom a little bit, but I strongly believe that a Samsung device without TW loses its advantages. I've been using Galaxy S with AOSP for a long time but I was forced to do it because of the lack of updates after 2.3.6
Samsung says that the new 4.3 update will bring new and fast TW without lags and constant refreshing. This makes me think that porting the new SW is better than Aosp roms. Of course there should be some roms based on CM cause many people preffer stock android instead of customized one.
I just want CM because it allows you to port MIUI v5. I have always been a fan of MIUI roms.
I bought my Galaxy S5 a couple of months ago and I still have this S2. I'm really not sure what to do with this phone. Not gonna sell it away because it is an awesome phone.
But here I'm planning: (I'm sure there are a lot of people like me, not sure what to do with their old S2 now.)
- build a media center.
But this requires sammy ROM so it could be connected to the TV using HDMI.
- try out new ROMs.
Yeah awesome idea.
- use it as an IP Camera.
- use it as an "iPod"
I have some questions regarding these choices.
1) shall I stick to sammy jellybean or upgrade to KitKat? I'm currently using kikat on this S2 but I would like to use it on the TV
2) will it have any problems if I let my S2 stick on he charger 24/7? If only I would like to use it as an IP camera. Will it have any effects on the battery/motherboard?
I hope fellow S2 members can discuss all this here. Thanks!

I am not an s2 user anymore for 1,5 years but.
1) you can stick to jellybean stock if you want it for your tv but I suggest to use a custom rom based on stock jellybean, look in the dev forums there are a couple of it.
2) I am not sure or you will have any problems but just like on a laptop and other devices its not good to let a battery charge for 24/7 so google it for sure for your own safety/phone life.
I also hope for you that other s2 member are going to discuss here with you
I dont see the point to stay on kitkat if you already have the s5. So I suggest to downgrade to an custom stock base rom since it would be also probably more bug free.
I really recommend using a custom stock rom such as neatrom for pure stability. If you prefer a little extra performance (and some new features), go with a kitkat rom such as cyanogenmod or paranoid android (and the list can go for ages).
I decided to go with JB NeatROM. Thanks for the advice guys! I find it more stable and faster as compared to KitKat. (Probably because I didn't use JB for months)
Hello there.
I have an old Galaxy S3 laying around for almost 2 years and i would love to give it some use.
Since my mother is not into Android phones yet, i would love to tune my S3 and let her get used to it.
So my question is:
What is the best performance rom? (old android, or new, doesn't matter..phone just needs to fly!)
What is the best stable rom with newest android versions?
And between these 2, which one would you prefer? Performance or new Android?
Best regards.
Thank you!
Funny thing, I also had my SGS3 somewhere on the bottom of the shelf for 2-3 years and forgot about it.
Than my Mom wanted a touchscreen phone so I gave it to her to try but she didn't like it... So I bought a new battery and use it by myself now again, great phone still
As for your question - SmartDroid Simple v9.9 (Samsung Touchwiz 4.3 cleaned-up and optimized) - best battery and blazing fast, my favourite, or...
One of older SlimKat's builds (Jellybean or even KitKat), also fast but little bit worse battery.
I also was trying some newer Nougat Roms (CM's, Lineages), but they don't run as good for me as older Androids on SGS3.
For your mom it definitely gonna be SmartDroid Simple 9.9.

Thank you so much! Looks pretty fast, although it looks terrible (i mean, i haven't seen Android 4 for a long time xD).
But it seems perfect for what i expect it to be!
