i followed the instructions on the CyanogenMod wiki (http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Install_CM_for_jewel) to install CM 10.2 on my EVO 4G LTE.
i am able to launch TWRP 2.7.0.8 and receive a notice that CM 10.2 flashes successfully but when i try to reboot into the system, i see the white htc screen, the screen goes black and the whole thing just repeats itself until the battery dies or i get back into recovery and shut down.
there is a note at the bottom that says " if unlocked with HTCDev Unlock, must have its kernel flashed via fastboot." since i used the instructions on that page, i assumed this didn't apply to me, otherwise it would have been included within the instructions.
i have installed CM on my old captivate and my Nexus 7 successfully, so i have done this before by following instructions, but am at a loss as to what happened this time. any tips would be greatly appreciated!
If you're S-on you have to flash the kernel separately from the ROM. Hit the top link in my sig and scroll down to the section on S-on kernel flashing for more info.

thanks for your quick reply. can i use TWRP to flash the kernel? i can copy the boot.img to my external sd card and then flash from there. i am unable to push files using adb.(not sure where the problem is. i installed sync but do not have media player 11 installed so maybe that's the problem)

No, you can't use TWRP, at least not for flashing in recovery. You do have a few options, though. You can use the paid app Flash Image GUI from the Play Store, use the TWRP Dumlock feature (link can be found in my guide), or get S-off (your best bet). There is a link in my guide on how to set up ADB on your computer, so maybe that will get you headed in the right direction.

If you're interested in reverting back to completely stock, the RUU files are available at http://www.goo-inside.me/shooter/ruu . Both the PG86IMG.zip and the .exe files are available there.
Interesting the device is flashed to verizon, at least you mention the device is on CDMA verizon. The only issues I can forsee here will be 3G data/MMS might not work via Verizon if using a stock Sprint ROM.
Of course, these *might* work and they can also be *tweaked* but I doubt, out of the box, they will work. Phone calls and SMS should work over verizon using the stock sprint ROM.
Here is my usual lecture, reading this will save you a lot of time and headache, regarding flashing a ROM and kernels on the EVO 3D with hboot 1.5 and htc's unlock method:
Essentially, if you're looking to flash a kernel or ROM (which many times also include a kernel), there are three basic methods (two seem the easier) with hboot 1.50 and htc's unlock method:
1) For Kernel Flashing: From Android mode, using my application, Flash Image GUI. Put the kernel .zip file on your sdcard, select from inside the application and flash.
For ROM Flashing: Pull out the kernel file (usually named boot.img) out of the ROM .zip and push to sdcard. Flash using Flash Image GUI.
If you're away from a computer and want to flash any kernel, this is a great tool!
2) Load the custom recovery, NOT using the traditional method (reboot recovery, bootloader -> recovery, etc), but a specific method for Hboot 1.5. From the prompt use: fastboot boot c:\downloads\cwm-recovery.img.
This will temporarily boot the custom recovery image and the HTC unlock method will grant it write access to the boot partition while in this mode.
In this temporarily booted recovery mode, when a full ROM (with kernel included) is flashed, the kernel will flash correctly.
3) Boot into recovery using the traditional methods, reboot recovery, bootloader -> recovery, etc, and after the custom recovery has loaded, flash the ROM. Reboot into fastboot mode and then separately flash the kernel from the computer: fastboot flash boot c:\boot.img.
Downside to this method would be if a zImage is included instead of the boot.img for the kernel, won't flash correctly.
Being without a phone is rough now a days! Hope that helps and points in the right direction!
so sorry.. i meant to say CDMA Sprint.. i probably was so frustrated and typed verizon. I am about to read what you post completly.
Thank you so much for the reply! I purchased the GUI App from the market a few days ago and I wasnt sure if it would work on my phone because that PG86IMG.zip wasn't on the root of my SD card (it's on the other guy's sd card) I will try your method to flash a ROM.
I was able to get the Rom restored from the nandroid backup someone last night.. I still need a new rom because this one has touch screen problems. Thanks again
Originally had a stock Evo then decided to root it and install a custom rom.
I rooted it using the RegawMod
Then I tried to use goomanager to install the rom, but this didn't work
So I tried to manually install the rom through TWRP, I made a backup then I flashed the superwipe(smw6180) script and flashed that first then I flashed the custom rom I downloaded (UR_EVO_4G_LTE_SIX)
Now, when I reboot it shows the HTC boot screen, then goes to black.
I am able to get back into recovery pretty easily but am not able to restore my backup, I still keep getting the black screen
Also whenever I am flashing my backup or my new rom, its says that it took 0 seconds to complete, which I find very odd
The recovery page looks like this

Does anyone have any suggestions to how to fix this? I have searched everywhere but no one has any real answers.
You have to flash the kernel separately.
Easiest thing to do, go to the TeamWin website and get the latest twrp recovery image and a copy of meanrom from the development section, fastboot flash recovery and install meanrom, it has a kernel installer so you don't have to flash the kernel separately

Would it be possible to install the PJ75IMG.zip and do this through the bootloader. Then flash mean rom?
Or do I have to do the ADB Fastboot method?

There's an app called flashGUI in playstore that installs kernel for you. But it doesn't always work and can mess up. In that case you will need adb tools to get it working right. So it is reccomended u go ahead and learn adb tools, may as well install kernel with it.

MeanROM 4.0 and above has a built in kernal installer included so no need to flash the kernal separately
Thanks for all of your responses. I used fastboot to install a recovery, then installed meanrom.
Everything seems to be working perfect!!
I also got my foot in the door with using adb, which is awesome.
The kernel is the boot.img in any rom. So, if u want to flash anything other than mean rom flash the boot.img either before or after u flash the whole rom. Not too hard really
Help!!! I am willing to pay someone $50 via Paypal to help me resolve my issues.
Here is my story. I have a DNA bought a month ago. Have not installed the latest OTA updates. I wanted to root it because I had my Thunderbolt rooted and was using the Wifi Tether app which was great.
So last night I followed exact directions and rooted the phone. I first did all the unlocking the boot loader then installed TWRP recovery, etc then rooted it. I am sorta a newbie when it comes to rooting but I have done about 5 Thunderbolts for friends and families without any issues.
So after the root things seems to be OK. I went ahead and installed the Wifi Tether app (the yellow one) but it did not work. I then checked SuperSU and it kept saying the binaries needed to be updated but everytime I told it to do that the phone would reboot and if I go back into SuperSU then it would say binaries needed to be updated again. I researched then installed Superuser and chose to use that instead. At this point the Wifi stopped working. It would say "turning on" but never does.
So I tried different ROMs including the HTC sense rooted, Viper, CM Mod, whatever.
With different ROMs either I still experience the same Wifi not turning on or get message "unfortunately, the process com.android.phone has stopped" and it would be like that every 2 seconds.
At this point I am so disgusted as it wasted so much of my time. All I wanted was to get wifi hotspot which I assumed I had to root.
This is a nightmare and at this point I still would like to root it but more importantly I need a working phone like it was before I rooted this.
If anyone willing to invest some time and help me straighten this out I can pay you $50 by Paypal. It maybe an easy fix but I gave up.

did you flash a kernel with system write enabled?
with each rom usually comes a boot.img in a zip file (or the rom dev will have a separate download) and what you need to do is copy the boot.img file to where you have adb.exe, then issue the following:
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
Flash boot.img in Bootloader by doing this (make sure on the phone screen when you are in bootloader it says "fastboot usb") :
Code:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
Then once you flashed your boot.img file reboot to recovery and then flash the rom and modules (usually the modules.zip is in with the boot.img) take the modules.zip place them on your sdcard where ever you like and after you flash the rom then flash the modules.zip in recovery and that should fix your wifi issues and by flashing the correct kernel(boot.img) that will fix the su binaries and they will update
oh and if you are on a shared data plan the wifi tethering is free...

Find a kernel you like and flash both parts of it.
Flash the modules in recovery and flash the boot.img wither in fastboot using "fastboot flash boot boot.img" or using the flash img gui app.

You need to flash a kernel with system write enabled. Since you are not S-off you have to flash the kernel via fastboot and then reboot to recovery and flash the kernel modules zip that comes with your kernel of choice. Without system write enabled you cannot update busy box. If you do not have adb or fastboot enabled to flash the kernel via fastboot there is a tool suite that will help. Most wifi issues are because of not having flashed the modules.zip in recovery after flashing the kernel. Once you get that fixed there is a thread in the Questions section where I posted my Wifi Tether settings that work with the DNA.
Thanks for the fast responses. I like the Viper DNA ROM. I will try to follow your directions. I will be home in a couple of hours and will try it and plan on spending all night if I need to get this thing working.

Download this its the ROM and put it on your /sdcard in your phone: http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=9390288116658473299
Then
Go here and download this .zip its what ViperDNA Recommends (but later if you want to you can download any kernel you wish)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2064066
Now this is what you do with this second download, open the .zip and there will be a boot.img and a Modules.zip
place the modules.zip where you placed the ViperDNA .zip, then take the boot.img and place it where you have your adb.exe file
then boot into the bootloader where it says "fastboot usb"
now after you get into fastboot issue the
Code:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
then it will flash the boot.img file after it completes on the phone boot into recovery
then do all of the wipes (FR, cache, dalvik) then flash the viperdna rom and after that finishes flash the modules.zip then you can boot into the rom and everything should be working
then once you get all of those done you should get some kind of notification from ViperDNA to flash some kind of OTA (their versions there should be three) to update to the latest ViperDNA
here is the viperdna thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2105745 for w/e you need it for

HTC Dumlock Instructions:
Install the build of TWRP using your method of choice, but you must actually flash TWRP to recovery. No fastboot booting it. We need it in recovery so that this build of TWRP will be flashed to your boot. This new build of TWRP has features in it to easily restore your original boot.
Reboot into recovery.
Make a backup of your phone.
Tap Advanced.
Tap HTC Dumlock. (If you don't see HTC Dumlock then you need to remove any custom TWRP theme that you might be using.)
Tap Install HTC Dumlock. This will install the app and binaries needed to make everything work nicely.
Reboot your device.
Find and open the HTC Dumlock app.
If/when prompted, give the app root (SuperUser) permissions.
Tap the Execute HTC Dumlock button.
Wait patiently for a couple of minutes. It takes a little while.
If your device doesn't reboot automatically, reboot it manually. Reboot it normally. DO NOT reboot it to recovery.
You should now be in your recovery, but your recovery is flashed into boot.
Tap Advanced.
Tap HTC Dumlock.
Tap Restore Original Boot.
Use your recovery like normal. Flash a new kernel. Restore a backup with a different kernel. Do whatever you please!
Consider donating!
Note, you must repeat steps 8 through 17 EVERY TIME you need to flash boot.
Installation:
Unlock bootloader at http://www.htcdev.com/bootloader/
Make sure fastboot is unchecked in power options and turn phone completely off
Boot into HBOOT then Fastboot
From fastboot. Use command "fastboot erase cache"
From fastboot. Use command "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img"

However, when I went to reboot, TWRP says 'are you sure no OS installed?' sure enough, i got stuck at the HTC One screen for a long time afterwards. The rom installed fine with adb push, then installing it. Just wondering if this is me or other people experience it.

Hello everyone... I really like the way TWRP works even though the backup files seem to be proprietary. I especially like the way the wipe area allows you to select other specific items under "advanced." One question I have though is this... is the "fix permissions" option working for everyone? Would this not work on certain ROMs? I am just curious. Thanks for your insight!
cant flash the recovery. it says out of memory :/

It should work as long your bootloader is unlock.
Fix HTC EVO 4G LTE after System Wipe
I put together this short guide in order to help users fix their phones after wiping out their OS (Operating System). This guide assumes that your phone is unlocked and has a custom recovery installed on it, and that no ROM or back-up is available to install from the phone itself. Simply follow the steps below to get your phone back up and running.
1) Download a ROM to your computer.
2) Boot your phone into recovery mode. You can do this via the bootloader menu (check out my Hboot guide in my sig if you need help navigating the bootloader menu).
3) Connect your phone and computer via USB cable.
4) Select the "Mount" option in recovery. Use the checkboxes to select which storage you'd like to mount (internal or MicroSD), then hit the "Mount USB Storage" icon. Go to your computer and move the ROM to your phone. Once complete, you can unmount storage (as an alternative to this method, you can boot into the bootloader and connect via Fastboot USB mode and push a ROM from your computer to your phone's internal or external storage. Remember, you need to have a working ADB/Fastboot environment installed on your computer).
5) Do a full wipe. On the newer versions of TWRP, select "Advanced Wipe" and wipe cache, Dalvik cache, data and system. Then flash your ROM. Pay particular attention if you're S-on, as you will most likely have to install the ROM kernel separately from the ROM itself. Just check out the OP for the ROM you're installing and see what the instructions are. If you're S-off, just flash the ROM zip and reboot to system.
If you have an issue where your internal storage is corrupt and fails to mount in recovery, follow the steps above to mount your internal storage to your PC. You should be prompted to format your storage. Just follow the on-screen instructions on your PC. Keep in mind that formatting your internal storage will erase it, so it's good to have a back-up of your internal storage elsewhere.
If you need drivers for your computer, look here. Thanks CNexus for the thread. You can also install HTC Sync manager for the latest drivers.
If you need to set up ADB on your computer, this guide is easy to follow (credit to Jerry Hildenbrand at Android Central for the write-up).
An easy ROM to install if you're S-on running Hboot 1.15-2.09 is MeanBean, since it has a S-on kernel installer built in. Simply flash the Rom zip once and reboot from recovery. The phone will boot to the HTC splash screen, then back to recovery. Flash the ROM zip again, and reboot. I've included a link to MeanBean here. Thanks to MikeyXDA for this ROM. You can also run a RUU from your computer to get a OS installed on your phone.
***If you are on the new partition layout (Android 4.3 Hboot 2.10) the above method will not work. Re-run the 4.13.651.4 RUU while the phone is booted to the bootloader and your device and computer are connected via Fastboot USB. If you're S-on you will need to relock your bootloader prior to running the RUU. If you're S-off simply run the RUU. Alternatively, you can download a ROM based on the new layout and follow the steps outlined at the beginning of this guide.***
Links to all applicable RUU's for the EVO LTE can be found in the OP of my Hboot guide.

Updated 10-1-2013 with a link to MeanBean ROM. Also added instructions on how to format internal storage when it fails to mount in recovery due to being corrupt (occurs sometimes when moving back and forth between AOSP & Sense, or when a factory reset from the bootloader is performed).
Updated with links to drivers & ADB set-up guide.
You might want to clarify how to do this part of step 4:
"mount whatever storage you'd like to transfer the ROM to"
Some people might not know how to do that in the newer versions of TWRP. The checkboxes seems to throw people off.
But thanks for providing this. Hopefully this will help to address a lot of the threads we've seen popping up lately.

Added instructions on how to fix a device on the new partition layout (Android 4.3).
Sent from my HTC M8
I was trying to root and install cyanagenmod, but somehow I stupidly failed and I apprently have wiped the original OS and I don't have a backup.
I can fastboot into HBOOT-2.09.0000
and I have the TWRP 2.7.0.8
I'm stuck on step. 5 because I couldn't find instructions on installing the kernel
When I try to install CM11 or Stock ROM, it tells me
"Error: Kernel Not Installed!"
Can someone help me and suggest some possible fixes?
You're probably S-on. When you're S-on, you have to flash the kernel separately through fastboot.
Also since you're on hboot 2.09, make sure you're not flashing NPL builds, since you're on the old partition layout.

If you're S-on you have to install the kernel separately from the ROM itself. Hit the top link in my sig and scroll down to the section on S-on kernel flashing. Also, as stated above, make sure you're installing ROM's for the old partition layout, otherwise you'll have issues.

unable to flash any new rom
as the title says, any attempt to flash a custom rom results in the following error message:
Checking for MD5 file...
Skipping MD5 check:no MD5 file found
mount: failed to mount /dev/block/platform/msm_
sdcc. 1/by-name/system at /system; no such volume
[!] installation is block based
E: Error executing updater binary in zip '/external_sd/BlissPop-v1.2-jewel-UNOFFICIAL-20141211-1801.zip'
Error flashing zip '/external_sd/BlissPop-v1.2-Updating partition details...
something to note: i've attempted to manually mount the /system, however upon failure to flash the rom, returning to the mount section shows the /system unmounted.
i have:
TWRP v2.8.0.1
hardware version 0003
software version 4.13.651.4
rooted using towelroot
bootloader unlocked
s-off
hboot - 2.10.0000
radio 1.13.11.1105
any help would be appreciated.

Are you using my TWRP?
Is this the only ROM you've attempted to flash? Can you post the recovery log?
Also, curious how you used Towelroot, as that's an exploit for Verizon devices that are blocked by HTC Dev
A: I didn't see a link for your TWRP so I'm using the one from twrp manager. As for towelroot, I installed it from an apk. It's reported to work across several devices and has allowed me to run root programs on this particular device as well as my S4.
I've tried several different roms, all have failed. Well except the RUU's.
Recovery log attached. Renamed as txt file for xda uploading.

Better yet, the one here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=56530311
Good news. Used the twrp from the first link and now everything is well. Thank you very much for your help.
Lesson: not all TWRP's are created equal
