[Q] how to launch kindle book reader with alt. launcher? - Kindle Fire HDX 7" & 8.9" Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

Hi,
I installed the apex-launcher as alternate launcher for my kindle HDX7 (rooted). everything is working so far except starting the kindle book reader (not documents, that one is working).
clicking on the icon "Amazon Kindle" simply does nothing. No force close, no new window, nothing.
Any hint, how to read Books on Kindle Fire HDX with an alternate Launcher?
thanks.

Go to the app drawer, find app name "Docs", that is the one you need to open instead of "AMazon kindle", any document appears in either "Docs" or "Amazon Kindle".
Another fast shortcut is swiping up from the bottom, you could see the docs.

This is not true. under Docs are only the documents available, that i uploaded (via email) to amazon. Under "Amazon Kindle" are the books available, that i bought at amazon. The Behaviour that you describe happens at the "normal" kindle-app that you can install on a normal android device. The kindle app on the fire hdx do behave different.

yepp, that one helps, if you ever openend a book before.
So there is still no option to open the amazon bought books from an alternate launcher ...

In my case, I have no problem with reading ebooks on Kindle Fire HDX. I download books .prc and uploaded into the kindle Fire hdx's storage so I do not know about the bought books from Amazon. You haven't mentioned exactly your case in the #1 so I misunderstood.

Two-step process. First, launch "Home" (with the kindle icon), aka the Carousel launcher.
THEN pick the books from the regular menus.
No, I haven't found a way to bypass that. Seems the special Kindle-tablet-app only accepts calls from the Carousel launcher and won't load otherwise.

Kindle Integrated Store

I can't seem to get the integrated store in the Kindle app to go beyond the first level (i.e., Books, Newspapers, Magazines, etc.) Once I click on that I get an error and link to the webpage. I have linked free eBooks to the Amazon account on the webpage, and they seem to sync fine with the Kindle app via whispernet, I wonder why I can't do the same via the integrated bookstore though.
Same exact problem here..
Kindle Store
Ditto. Nootered Nook Color w/ 1.0.1 exibits same behavior. Anyone find a fix yet? Scott
It seems to be tied to the user agent issue (reporting as desktop) in the stock WebKit engine.
Any solution to this?
I have a brand new Nook... freshly rooted and this was the killer feature/app for me. It kind of kills my excitement that it doesn't work.
So, this was annoying me too. I read the info about the user agent issue. So I played a bit and here is a quick hack to get it mostly working. Note, that the "integrated" kindle store is really just a Webview that is displaying the mobile pages from amazon.
Outside of Kindle, open the default browser. Click on the icon in the top right hand corner looks like some lines with a triangle pointing downwards.
Then select Mode Options.
Select Settings
Then select the first item marked: Browser Mode/User Agent.
Click on Mobile Browser Mode.
Now, open the Kindle app and click on the kindle store.
Now, clicking on anything here will take you to that error page, but if you now click on the Home link now and if you have more then one browser installed, select the system browser and it will take you to the mobile Amazon page.
Select books then Kindle books and now you are at the Kindle store and the links work. As long as you are selecting the system default browser each time it seems to work for me.
Note: When it draws the page, the back button gets slid up and is not visible. Simply drag the page down and the back button will be visible, or use Softkeys.

Followed your directions and was able to access the mobile site. I don't see where I would select "Books" then "Kindle Books".
On my mobile view I have the following:
Recommendations For You
Category Bestsellers and Deals (Which lists Today's deals: Books, DVD, Music, More categories)
Cart
Wish List
Your Account
1-Click Setting
Help
Amazon.com Full Site
Sorry, for me after getting the error page, if I click on the link to go Amazon's home page, I have a link to books as the first item. Maybe it has to do with the fact that I have logged into Amazon before on the device outside of the kindle app?

I have the same problem in the kindle app, solution I used was to just use dolphin browser on the amazon site and send them via whispernet from there.
The instructions provided here work to a tee. My device was on version 1.0.0, so I didn't have that mobile user agent option in the browser. I guess it became available in the 1.0.1 update. Anyway, I updated to 1.0.1 and 1.1.0. I have the mobile user agent in the browser and it works!!! Thank you so much for this. I could have just browsed the Amazon site on another browser in desktop mode, but this is an enjoyable experience just for Kindle content and you can buy or sample content!

Google Books link to Market for Fire but not The Nook Tablet?

Ijust saw a video today on youtube, this person opened up google books apk on his Kindle fire which launched the market. He clicked on Shop in the upper right hand corner, it launched the Android market on the device without root. I tried this with the google books apk I have but upon clicking shop,it prompts me to pick a browser. It did not automatically open the shop.
Can this be done? I don't believe I can post a link, so the title of his video is, "How to use the android market on the kindle fire" and was uploaded yesterday. Again, he says it is unrooted.

[Q] Third Party Apps and Nook Tablet

I have a fully rooted dual boot Nook Color and love it. I am interested in the Nook Tablet as well. I understand it has a locked bootloader so dual boot and custom ROMs aren't possible right now. I also understand it can be rooted and apps sideloaded.
Does anyone know if these apps will work on a Nook Tablet, rooted or otherwise?
Zinio
Pressreader
Spotify
Kindle for Android
NY Times and LA Times apps
Overdrive
Dropbox
Facebook
OfficeSuite
Slacker Radio
Hootsuite or Twitter
I am just trying to figure out if the Nook Tablet is worth upgrading to or if I am better off sticking with my Nook Color. Thank you!
ETA: I'm forced to wait 5 minutes to fix a typo? I understand the need to block spam, but that's really user unfriendly.
I have a non-rooted NT that I've tweaked to accept 3rd party apps. I've installed the Zinio, Kindle, Overdrive, and Dropbox apps on it, and they seem to run just fine. I say seem to because I haven't done a lot with them yet other than see if they'll open and run. They do and look like they'll run just fine.
Thanks for the reply! How did you tweak your NT?

By following the directions in an article at liliputing.com ["How to Sideload Apps on the NOOK Tablet (Amazon Appstore, GO Launcher EX)"]
No rooting involved; just uncovering and enabling a setting. Pretty easy. From there, I either downloaded some apps from Amazon's app store or sideloaded them by copying the app files off my smartphone, sending them to my gmail account, and accessing my gmail account via the web browser. A bit time-consuming, but not very difficult to do.
Very helpful! Thanks so much.

Do all sideloading apps and games work perfectly?

Hello everyone, I'm considering to buy a kindle fire HDX 7". I read this article:
And it said that I could install apps and games from other sources than Amazon Appstore. My question is: Do all apps and games can be installed correctly that way (from .apk file)??? And do they all work perfectly after installing???
Thank you.

yeah, almost every apk app can run on this kindle os, launcher can't set wallpaper though. all you need is a file manager like ES explorer.as for me ,I install a thirdparty appstore called "Wandoujia", works just fine, it doesn't depend on the google service.
Sideloading works well
Yep, sideloading works great. I put 1Mobile and F-Droid markets on it and it's working fine. Same with Humble Bundle games downloaded to it. Except for some deep Google services everything so far works nicely.
THanks to sideloading!
Glad we are able to side-load some apps and games we have purchased but cannot install due to amazon store.
I got dead trigger 2 and heroes of loot playing on my kindle hdx 8.9, and they run and look amazing
Sure many side-loaded apps may not work its really hit or miss but you will find that most of them will work well.
Also another thing to note is that you will not be able to see any of your side-loaded app using fire os launcher so instead just download "smart task bar" free from amazon store, it will allow you to see all your apps installed and so far works great.

Huh? You most certainly can see them in the "launcher" & they can be added to the favorites & to the Carousel. The ONLY time you may not see them, is if you are in the app page & on the "Cloud" tab. They are all visible from the "Device" tab though.
To the OP, most apps do work fine sideloaded. Just enable "Apps from unknown sources" & you are good to go. Also, as mentioned above, any apps that rely on GSF for DRM will not work without modification. That is going to include quite a few of the bigger name paid games.
Many side-loaded games will run upside down no matter the orientation.. You can fix this using the rotation lock button
I have bought shadowrun returns at least 2 times already (android, ipad) and would purchase it again if it was available on amazon store.. I had to instead side-load it and it works great
And thanks for pointing out that all installed apps DO indeed show when looking under "on device" silly me:cyclops:
Better Terminal Emulator - FC
I run Better Terminal Emulator Pro (BTEpro) [side loaded] on my droid devices for command line access as root to poke around, move files, etc. Currently, BTEpro runs fine on the KF HDX 8.9 until you try to open the stock keyboard, which results in a force close (FC) & the keyboard remains active after the FC.
EDIT: even though BTE results in FC when opening the stock keyboard, it will work great with an external BT keyboard

How were you able to side load shadowrun. I bought it on my Toshiba thrive and now want to move it to my new kindle fire . The file explorer app fails to generate a setup .apk file for paid apps. where did you get the apk ?
Thanks in advance.

You can't sideload a paid app... AFAIK. However, I have no problem Getting Google Play store to work if you use HDX Utility to install it. Then you have best of both worlds: something that runs both Amazon AND Google. I have plenty of games I bought and play through both.

Alternative App Stores

Hi.
I'm being tempted to buy the new Kindle Fire HDX because of the build quality, amazing speakers and amazing specs. What puts me off is the lack of Google Play store but my main concern is not being able to download and sign-in to Google services and apps such as Youtube, maps, Email, etc.
What alternative ways (or third-party stores) that i can download so i can use and sign-in to most (if not all) of Google services apps that i normally need and have?
Please advice.
Thanks.
Take a look at the forums. At this point you can flash your HDX so that it's basically Android 4.2.2. Thing like Google Apps will all work. I check Gmail and use Google Drive daily on my HDX.
HDX is the best 7 inch tablet on the market right now. Its only real flaw being Fire OS can be remedied by anyone even remotely competent.
1mobile app store works, and you can download most if not all of the google apps through that. All that's really missing is the play store.
My wife has the old Kindle Fire HD and i have downloaded the 1Mobile market plus Good e-reader and Aptoide successfully. I found most (but not all of them) Google apps there but i noticed that you can't sign-in to them especially Youtube. Gmail is no big deal as i can check my mails on my phone or Mac. And there is no Google+ which is a shame. Unless i'm blind or its there now but last night i can't find it.
I dont' want to root my Kindle Fire HDX as im not familiar in the first place and i am very satisfied with just sideloading apps and going through third-party app stores. If there is another way to download the Google apps & services then ill buy the Fire HDX today.
So, apart from the ones i mentioned above is there another way(s) to look for .apk files of my favourite Google apps like Google+, Youtube, Maps, Translate, Drive, etc.? Please??

I am not desperate but it would be awesome if one can install the Google Play store on a Kindle Fire without rooting.
