After reading numerous threads I'm still unclear on this. I apologize, as I'm sure this has been answered several times. I was given a GS4 that is currently on the MK2 build and I'm trying to find out if there is a method for root/custom recovery. I'm not too interested in the safestrap methods.
Any straight answers to help minimize and clarify the research I've done is appreciated. Thanks.

Safestrap your only choice.

That is what I was afraid of. Might just stick to my Note 2 for awhile longer.
Thanks for the reply!

Hi everyone I am Sean, and I just got my ATT SGS2 Yesterday. I think I followed a rooting guide for the non ATT one. The rooting was successful but my WIFI is down with no MAC Address, also I cannot seem to get any custom rom working.
Is there a way to get the Stock ATT Kernel so I can flash and start over. Is there a rooting guide specificly for the ATT version?
Thanks ahead of time!

If u flashed the wrong kernel, go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1294574. Not trying to be mean, but it took me less then a minute of skimming over the Android development section to find this.
Here is the normal rooting guide, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1301682.

Umm, Sorry I wasn't aware I should be looking in the Development section? Since that isn't the right section...?

Please read *before* you post a question. There is a lot of information available on the XDA I777 forums. Please read all the stickies in the general section, as well as the library sticky in the development section. You've been on xda-developers for several years and made many posts, so you *should* know the forum rules. People here will be glad to help you if you do your part first, but if you are looking to have your hand held, you will probably get little help.

Excuse me, I did read. Why would I look in the development section for a troublshooting issue? Please do not post unhelpful comments like that. You obviously can't comprehend the issue fully.

It's just that your questions are already answered in sticky posts in both the general forum and the development forum. I thought it would be better if you wnet and read the answers there rather than taking the time to write the answers all over again.
You clearly didn't read if you went and flashed something not meant for your device without VERY explicit instructions on what is OK to flash and how to flash it.

Actually as I have already explained I did read plenty, I found nothing in the Q&A Section, which is where a solution to a "Question" should be.
And the Guide I followed which was from XDA never once stated that it was only for the International version. Nor did it say it would not work for the AT&T version.
I have been with this community a long time and have never had someone as rude or unhelpful as you. Please do not reply to posts if you are not helping in anyway.
Even though you may have read threads in the Q&A section, a simple search would have pulled up the IMPORTANT threads taht are located in the Dev section that would have answered your questions... and why are they in the Dev section you ask? Because, when flashing anything to your phone like a rom or kernel, its considered DEVELOPMENT and you would have know that if you would have read.
Now go read some more and search. Thread closed.
I've tried numerous times with numerous methods. Can't seem to get it down. I consider myself pretty tech savvy. Any tips for a noob?
Read the instructions from the developer over and over. Then read it again before doing anything else. Read them several times in their entirety before beginning action. Most issues arise because people think they've read the instructions, but they missed that one key item.
Follow THIS step by step guide, assuming you are bone stock (as the guide states) and you will be golden if you do not skip anything.
I used his CASUAL one-click method (on mac, windows should be easier) and it was my first time rooting. 0 Problems.
Know exactly what version of stock software you have installed on your device. Make sure it lines up with any guide you are following. If you're not sure, ask. Make sure you have a comprehensive understanding of the following concepts before proceeding. If you're confused as to what any of these are, search the forums and google. As a last result, ask. Don't just think you know what these are. Be positive in your knowledge of these terms:
Root
(Locked) Bootloader
Recovery
Rom
Mod
Kernel
Flash/Install
Cache
Dalvik-Cache
Lastly, back up everything, every time. Best laid plans and all that. You can never be too safe.
Good luck
It all depends on whether you're on a Mac or PC. I had tons of problems with my Mac...I finally had to use my wife's work PC. There are also tons of Youtube videos with step by step instructions and links to the software...

Your first noob mistake is posting a question and not giving any details. What version are you on? Baseband? What have you actually tried? There are more than enough people to help guide you in the right direction. But as he said, do read until your eyes hurt. Then go away and when you come back, read some more

I am rooted now. Just working on getting the bootloader unlocked now so I can flash ROMS.
Sorry for the noob question, but I've been reading up, and I just want to confirm something. If I just got a S4 and it came with MJ7, do I have way of getting Cyanogenmod or any other AOSP rom on my phone? All signs so far are pointing to no.

you haven't read much, countless threads in S4 forums and several guides that explain what you can and can't do with the S4....i strongly urge you to take a few days and read up on everything before you brick your phone. There are sticky guides galore and threads galore on this stuff. just saying before you do something that cost you some major coin to bet fixed

How much research have you done?

It's either one or the other, it can't be both. Go into Settings>About Phone and see what baseband it says.

Asking questions is researching to me, do you have the answer to my question? I have done enough research to downgrade sucessfully from NC5 to MK2 install root go back up to NC5 and run hyper-drive. I like hyper drive but would like more roms to toy around with. Enough with the ego,I'm posting in the right section of the forum and it's a simple question. this question could very well answer more peoples questions and your thanks meter might go up. I've done enough research to know being mean gives you a bad rap and answering questions and bieing helpful in a help section gives you good reputation.

Unfortunately you can only stay with safe strap, the Loki method only worked with the MDK bootloader the phone originally came with when it launched.

Baseband only refers to your modem by the way. Basically you need to know what your bootloader is aka what build your phone is currently on.
Seems you've been answered already as to your recovery question. Only SafeStrap is available for your phone as of now.

Hey buddy, welcome back to the ROM scene. I recently (yesterday) answered this question. I included links to the up-to-date rooting (using CF-AutoRoot) and a decent guide to flashing custom ROMs. I also answered a few questions about KNOX.
Here is the link to the thread.
I hope this helps!
