switching carriers - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

I have a vzw s4 and might be switching to T-Mobile using byod. Do I flash tmo roms or vzw roms with tmo apns or modules?

If you are on MDK, you'll be flashing VZW ROMs anyways since the jflte is a unified build. If you are not on MDK, that might be a fun time for some trial and error on flashing different carrier ROMs, but have ODIN ready! I think people have covered different network switching ROMs in here before, but I can't clearly remember.
If you switch, do it before installing any new ROMs. Power off the phone, put in the TMo SIM, boot it back up. It may not get data but that's ok. Go into Settings->More->Mobile Networks->Access Point Names and add a new one. Put in the TMo APN settings, and make sure you save them. Reboot the phone. You should have your TMo phone and data signals coming in.
Once that is done, do the usually send/receive text/MMS, send/receive phone call. If any of those don't work, search the forums as there is usually a solution. I went to AT&T and had to add a 'U' onto the end of one of the build.prop entries for telephony RIL newCallerUI or something.
Once you verify everything works, make sure you keep the APNs somewhere and whatever you needed to do to get it working, as you'll have to do this each time you do a fresh ROM install with a data wipe. I've done it a couple of times now and been just fine. Good luck!

Key Notes for Verizon Galaxy S4 (AWS LTE) on T-Mobile's Network

After happily using my 'old' S4 on T-Mobile with HSPA+ since having the Note 3 as my primary line, I was naturally excited to update the baseband and unlock Band 4 LTE. However I noticed some caveats which I've now solved which will undoubtedly confuse everyone at some point.
Assuming you've got the correct APN for T-Mo (fast.t-mobile.com) and naturally install the SIM, if your phone is on global you will happily see working LTE but not so fast (no pun intended). If you call or text, it fails. If you quick check your About -Status in settings and look under network it will say say Unknown and not T-Mobile. Why? Essentially you're in LTE data only mode because by default the baseband is looking to connect to CDMA for everything else in the CDMA/LTE marriage that is Verizon unique, which obviously won't work here. The assumption otherwise is that you will only need GSM if traveling internationally so it never looks for LTE with GSM.
The quick easy fix is to drop out of Global back to the GSM/UMTS setting, which will bring everything back, network restored to T-Mobile, but now it won't use LTE again, lame.
Luckily there is a fix. Use the PhoneInfo app or however you prefer to get to the Testing App. Under device information change the dropdown to LTE/GSM (auto PRL). Toggle airplane mode or restart. When it comes up you should be on LTE and quick check settings again you'll see T-Mobile, and everything will work. So far this seems to hold pretty well.
EDIT: Note: This works for TW Roms. I have not had success in CM10.2. In CM I've only gotten LTE data (wrongly labeled Verizon) and nothing else. Doesn't even pick up my phone number regardless of settings used.
Can you send me the link to the TW rom you are using for this? Thanks!

Use this app, hit Device Information, and change the dropdown to LTE/GSM (auto PRL). Given the simplicity not sure you need much more of a walk through than that. A video would require a bunch of editing to blot out IMEI and phone #s.

I am using this app and it is great. When it works, it would show T-Mobile as Net. Op instead of Unknown. Only issue I am seeing is that 4G LTE signal is not so great over where I am at and once in a while it would drop to H+ and then get back to LTE. During that cycle, the Net. Op would become Unknown again. Wish there was a way to fix this permanently like tricky the SMS app to send GSM or whatever it is causing Net Ops to be unknown.

Couple of things. Remember as I started with the baseband in i545 when on LTE really wants to use CDMA as the default so when it's searching it's not going to obtain GSM as instantaneous As it otherwise would. Don't see any specific way of that getting patched ever as we're going against the grain of how it's typically supposed to be used. If you are on a fringy area for it, you may be better off just leaving LTE off, H+ speeds are practically the same anyway. Tmo is only using 3-5mhz channels for band 4 as they use other channels too so for us it's not going to be superfast like Verizon on average anyway.
My phone is in Global mode, I have fast LTE internet and calls/texting works just fine. I am using a Verizon S4 with MJ7 and a T-Mobile simcard. No need to change anything except the APN and switch to Global.

yep, cant really install anything on MJ7 since there is no official root even, so yeah, bone stock. Fastest I have gotten the internet to be was 25-26mbps download which isnt great, but for a cellphone is more than enough lol
So maybe the MK7 bootloader fixes this SMS issue...
How is this holding on for u ? I got it to work one time with hyperom and I restarted and it doesn't want to work. I did however get it working completely on a mj7 ROM and gummy kikat ROM. Weird.

I did that and it kept failing.... TWRP recovery just would not get it to take.
So I flashed the MJ7 rom again and I got it working on it. I'm not sure why it didn't work on hyperom. Very weird. Tried the method and nothing. But I tried the method on mj7 ROM and it works perfectly. Weird weird weird.

so using the 4.4 gummy rom you were able to connect to LTE / HSPA+ networks easily? And SMS / MMS worked just fine? Upon trying with the MJ7 update, non-rooted, I could only connect to Edge services under the GSM profile. Using global would barely warrant the HSPA band.

Are you actually getting "LTE" or reframed 4G?
please school me how to change apn.
well let me give you a trick, flash an i9505 rom which you can find them here http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4/i9505-develop
then flash any verizon kernel (because if you just flash an at&t or t-mob rom it wont reboot it will say triangle and not authorized verizon software)
dont forget to update your baseband to lastest then you can enjoy LTE (and fast) without any problems.
if you get and prop. issues while flashing international roms just change the "updater-script" first line to :
assert(getprop("ro.product.device") == "jfltevzw" || getprop("ro.build.product") == "jfltevzw"
then you can flash anything you want.
Here is how I did it
Here is how I did it, but needs some minor updates since then. Please let me know if anyone tries it and is happy with the result.

Verizon I-545 with T-mobile sim Q&A

I know this has been addressed a few times, but with the new radio's and T-mobile running on LTE bands I feel it can be addressed again.
I have been running a T-Mobile sim in my Verizon S4 for about 9 months now having 90% functionality of T-Mobile apps and after 4.3 using LTE with a few MMS hiccups that seem to have been ironed out.I have ran just about every ROM available here on XDA, and even attempted to write my own Rom a couple times with limited success. And every ROM I have ran was written for Verizon, I just changed the APN settings, and sometimes had to flash some other items to get them working 100%.
I have a few things I am working on trying to "fix" such as Hotspot and a few T-Mobile only apps. I have convinced my phone it is a SGH-M919 changing a lot of info in the build prop, which allows me to use the T-Mobile TV app. But being a trial and error kinda guy I don't know how much of my editing was necessary, or if I actually needed to change more to allow me to use the hot-spot app. I have bricked my phone to many times to count trying out Radio's and changing setting in the ROMs trying to make my I545 more a T-Mobile phone than a Verizon phone.
I have seen alot of "ports" such as the 4.4.2 GE that I am currently running ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2643031 ). The first release I had amazing signal and no connection issues. But after the DEV (Danvdh) plucked away at it making it work better for Verizon and fixing a lot of Verizon data issues has started to have a couple signal issues here and there. Nothing that I would say broke the connection but definitely slowed a few things for me down.
Same for the INT build ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2552605 ) from jrkruze it works amazing then started to slowly after updates not work as well as it did from his first release. The ROM got better but my "connection" got worse.
So on to my question:
What is being changed in the ROMs that make them better for Verizon? I know that I am part of a small majority of people here running a SIM and a network that it was never supposed to run on, but it does work and I would like to make it work as best as it can. I know I can go back and use the older versions of the ROMs but I like the other changes and I like being able to update.

The AWS spectrum was unlocked for the i545 a few updates ago. Since TMobile LTE runs on the AWS band, a Verizon S4/i545 is capable of running TMobile LTE
AWS was unlocked with the MJ7 modem.
I get 29Mbps down 6.5 up defenitly not H+ the whole Seattle area is AWS so I am loving it. That combined with T-mobiles truly unlimited data I torrent on the go!

Help with straight talk.

I currently have my rezound unlocked and s-off with a straight talk att sim card, running liquid rom (most current). I have used CDMA workshop to edit nv values that would supposedly get 3g working (no-go). At no point since I have had the rezound on straight talk (even before nv edits) have I been able to send or receive sms, or receive phone calls. I can make outgoing calls and have edge data. I've tried fifty different ROMs and as many or more different "3g fix" hacks, to no avail. I have used probably over 100 different APN settings as well. I am (slowly) downloading all the files I need for a complete downgrade and update (my rez is my only source of internet right now), in hopes that doing that may have some influence in getting things working properly.
Edit: Forgot the most important part, if anyone has any thing that they think may work, please share. I'm willing to try anything at least once.
Bump
I think the bands are the problem so no software can fix hardware problems
I don't think you read my entire post. In not really concerned with data speed, what I want is SMS, MMS, and to recurrence phone calls. Which it should be able to do without any modification.

Are you on AT&T or T-Mobile StraightTalk? Have you tried the SIM in another device? The reason I ask is because if you can make an outbound call and get Edge data, that is all you really you need to receive a call and send/receive SMS. MMS is a little more complicated but until you can get the voice and SMS working, I wouldn't even worry about MMS. But I am going to be honest, this sounds more like a SIM or Straight Talk setup issue than a phone issue.
@REV3NT3CH is kind of the expert in using domestic GSM on the Rezound... maybe he can chime in a little bit on this.

Luck?
I am not sure I understand why all this is necessary... there are two simple prop.build tweaks that need to be done to get GSM to work reliably with most JB/KK ROMs, if you look in the first or second post of ROMs like Vanir and Evervolv you will see a GSM.zip that you can flash to make these changes for you, some newer ROMs make these changes for you on the fly (or so it appears, I do not have a Rezound any longer). This is typically all that is required to make it work, although some NV edits might be needed to tune the radios for better reception, it should have basic functionality with minimal changes.
Make sure you on the latest Hboot and radios, wipe thoroughly, and flash per dev's instructions and look through your ROM thread for any GSM specific settings or changes that need to be made (if you can't find any, ask in the ROM thread to be sure).
I have to go back to wondering if you tested this in a AT&T phone to make sure it works, because this sure sounds like a SIM or activation issue with Straight Talk to me.
It may very well be an issue with straight talk. I used the att sim from their byop kit and don't have an att phone to test it on. I'm still trying to get all of the files downloaded to do a full factory restore to make sure it's not something in my device that's the issue.

[Q] G900T Mobile Data not working on ATT

My friend purchased a G900T that was broken for parts, which needed a new screen. Upon replacing the screen, the phone was functional, but he discovered that the IMEI number had been blacklisted on T-Mobile's network. We unlocked the phone to use it on ATT, and the device works fine on the ATT network, with the exception of mobile data. No matter what steps we have taken, putting in custom APN settings, we have not been able to get data to function.
Does anybody have any suggestions as to what might be causing these issues?
Thanks a lot in advance! :good:
Have you tried to flash an AT&T ROM & AT&T Modem?
Or are you still running T-Mobile ROM & Modem?
Still running the stock Tmobile rom and modem. I thought about switching to ATT rom and modem, but I wasn't sure if that would brick the phone or if it should just work with the stock Tmobile modem. Can I just flash an ATT rom?
Just make a Nandroid beforehand.
T-Mobile S5 comes w an unlocked boot loader so you shouldn't have any problem. You put in an AT&T SIM card right?
You do not want to flash AT&T firmware on a Tmobile phone unless you are looking to brick it. You can however flash ROM's from Unified S5 threads (900F, 900T etc.) that are open to multiple model phones.
So if I flashed one of the unified roms, would that change the modem at all? I was thinking that it wouldn't be part of the package. Would just flashing an att modem be a terrible idea? I am using an Att sim card. Thanks for the ideas so far!
No, do not flash an att modem or ROM on a tmo device. It won't work, and it is not meant to work.
Does your subscription have an active smartphone data plan?
Are you getting any data connection (E, 3G, or 4G)_and you're not able to jump on the LTE or just no data at all?
If the answers to above questions are yes, there are a few more things att checks for before authenticating data use on a device.
These fields need to look exactly like this:
ro.product.model=SAMSUNG-SM-G900A
ro.product.name=klteuc
ro.product.device=klteatt
ro.build.product=klteatt
This information lives in the build.prop file of your android OS and you're gonna have to look up how to back up and edit this file. Start off here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1948558 and keep on reading. I kbow this is exciting and you want to make it work quickly but it is not so simple. So reading and researching are your best friends.
Best of luck,
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G900A using XDA Free mobile app
Okay, thanks for the info! We are just plain not getting any data at all, and the user does have an active data plan with ATT. MMS messages are not even able to be sent or received. So in this instance, do you think modifying the build.prop to match the example you gave me would resolve the issue? I'm pretty comfortable working with the build.prop on the device and just working the the Android OS in general so that should not be a problem.
So I guess checking the APN settings won't be a bad idea:

Okay, I had checked APN settings before, but I'm not sure if they were specific to the S5 on ATT or just some generic ATT one I found. That thread looks pretty helpful, I'll see if I can give it a shot later today.
You may also consider loading an international ROM for example http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2732110

Can I "convert" my phone?

I have a Verizon Note 2. The ROMs available here for it are either stuck in KitKat, or littered with bugs that I just can't live with in a daily driver.
What I've wondered is can I flash TWRP for say the N7100, and then my phone will think that's what I have and let me flash those ROMs? Or, can I maybe even flash a different bootloader for the same purpose? Is this possible? I really want to get a couple more years out of my Note 2, but if I can't find a usable ROM then I'll be forced to say goodbye to it. So, can someone help?
I run a lot of at&t roms. I have tried a great number of ROMs and I have found that t mo Vzw at&t and international all work. But you have to set up APN stuff yourself. And never ever flash a modem or a ROM that includes one. There is still some kind of lock on the basdands.
Seriously, have you tried any of the AOSP roms that are on 5.1.1. XenonHD, CyanideL for instance. Rock stable, beautiful, fast. You could easily get another 2 years out of this phone once marshmallow hits.
Also, Alliance 4.4.2 TW ROM is rock solid.
I have a note 5 that sits in the drawer. Note II = best phone I have ever had. Will cry when it dies.
"Rock stable" is a subjective term, I guess. I personally don't consider the lack of bluetooth google voice commands, and the lost of 4g requiring setting APN settings to default to be "Rock stable".
Seriously.
Heh... If you struggle changing APN settings, you are gunna be in a world of hurt using a TMO ROM.
All you have to do is delete the APN, and reset it. That is with any 5.1.1 ROM.
Guess I never encountered the Bluetooth bug.
Have you tried XenonHD?

My point is that with a "rock solid" rom, the APN settings would just work and no resetting would be necessary.
Initial setup and long term stability are two completely different concepts IMO. Anything other than stock is going to take some initial setup. Whether that be applying GAPPS or SU or flashing kernel, or APN, or theming.
I guess I don't know what you want. Weren't you talking about flashing N7100 ROMs?? You know how much setup it will take to get those to work?
Again have you tried XenonHD?
So, I'll pose the question again...
Can I run other Note II roms that weren't designed for the Verizon version of the phone? If so, how exactly do I change the APN settings to accommodate my Verizon service?

No, that wouldn't be a good idea. Because each carrier has their own version of software for the Note II, they cannot be cross compatible. I once had a Sprint S2 and tried flashing an international ROM onto it, and let's just say that didn't end well. I got it fixed with some luck tho. What are you trying to accomplish by getting a Tmobile/ATT/SPRINT ROM? Also btw another reason is because AT&T and TMobile run off of the GSM bands and Verizon/Sprint run off of a CDMA band. The two don't mix. And no you can't flash a Sprint ROM either, as they use different CDMA bands.
I have the i605 Verizon variant of the Note 2. I changed service from Verizon to Straighttalk and since straighttalk uses AT&T, if I use a verizon rom on AT&T, incoming calls and outgoing calls are a pain in the ass. So, in order to accommodate this problem, I had to install the i317 att note 2 custom recovery version on my i605. I use the ATT SlimKat custom rom on my i605 without any issues. battery life is good and pretty stable. it is safe to odin flash an AT&T custom recovery to a i605. but if you flash a custom rom, be sure it doesn't have a modem or boot.img inside or you will run into problems. Generally stay away from TW roms as i've found they usually have them.
