[Q] back up and restore app data - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I have a few questions about backing up app data and also about root. first of all I rooted my Note 3 using Kingo Root several months ago, but recently received a minor update and lost root, but the device status is still "modified." Is that normal? Also, because the status is modified I can't receive major updates (Kitkat 4.4) so what I want to do is go back to stock 4.3 but I have to back up my data first. what I want to know is- is there a way to backup not only apps but their data as well? like S-note notes and action memo notes, sketchbook sketches, etc? Also because I read that kingo root is so shady, is there a better way to root the Galaxy Note 3?
Thank you!

back up & restore app data with clockworkmod recovery
Hi,
You can back up the complete system with clockworkmod recovery.
searching clockworkmod recovery on chip or other download sites.
>Root :
there is no better or worse
either root or not.

Thank you for the reply, however, I am on stock recovery and would like to stay there. I was hoping for an app or something to back up, and I know titanium backup would do it but I no longer have root after the minor update. I could reroot, but the only method I know of is kingo root. What other methods are there for the Note 3? Thanks again.

By the way, is Kingo still frowned upon here? Or have things changed?

I know I read on here a while back that they might be transferring information about devices, etc, to their servers. I didn't know if that was actually confirmed or debunked. Anyone else know? I know that method works, but don't want to use if that's the fact. I am leary of trying something new at first, but will with enough research (obviously lol.)
Also, while I'm here, the ultimate goal here is to get back to stock temporarily so I can update to 4.4, once I backup everything, if I flash the stock FW 4.3, even if I am rooted at the time, it should work right? Any consequences like Knox tripping?
Thank you for all the help

Ok, I've read some of the threads on here about Kingo and don't want to use it, so my question now is, is there a good root method for the Note 3 that doesn't trip Knox? The one-click method mentioned earlier appears to be Kingo from my Google searches.

What is with this :

That is an .bat Windows CMD Program
It´s very easy. :good:

The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 has Knox, the security feature, and if it's tripped, there goes your warranty. I thought all Note 3s had that. I just don't want to lose my warranty. Isn't Knox the flash counter for the note 3?

When you root your Device, your warranty is lost !
Knox will also ever say "No Warranty" when you root the Note 3
It's up to you what you're doing
But warranty is waste when your Note 3 work
So you can root it.
When the Note 3 work now, it will work in 5 years :good:

true, but from what I understand, you can flash official FW to unroot and the status will become "official" but if Knox is tripped there is no undoing that.

You can root the Note 3 and ignore Knox
Or when you can´t undo that and if you disturb this, don´t root the Note 3
But i think it´s no problem

[How To] 2 ways to root with/without tripping KNOX

Mods, Could we sticky this and i'll keep it updated. I was also compiling a list of roms and recoveries to be a one stop shop thing.
First off, HUGE thanks to these guys @designgears & @Chainfire, without them.. This would be an empty post.. Any thanks, or donations please respectfully give to them. I am relaying information found in the various sections of the forums.
There is a safe way, without tripping your KNOX counter.. and another way that DOES trip the counter. A few things first.
I have used the safe root way and I am on Sprint. I also used an app to change my system setting from custom to official. This is important so that Sprint reps wont know you are rooted or modified your system. It is also preferred that you use an after market launcher to hide such apps if you need to go in to the sprint store about anything. Keep in mind, that if you do have software issues, Sprint may ask to update your phone to the latest version and download the OTA. This will break root and keep system status official(I think, I've read that some people's status has shown Custom after the OTA), so all your root apps will stop working. If all else fails, just follow the directions to re root and make your device official again.

The Wanam Xposed from the Google Play store does work with the Galaxy Note 3
After installation of the Xposed Installer (requires root), you have to activate it by going to "Framework" and press " Install/Update" - You have to reboot for settings to take effect.
After your reboot you can go through modules in Xposed Installed app and find Wanam Xposed and download it or you can download it from the link above.
Finally make sure the module is enable and it will ask for root, after scroll down to Security Hacks/ System "Fake system status" - make sure it is checked. You will be prompted to reboot. Please do so.
Verifying system is official
In phone menu go to Settings/General/About Device/Status. Scroll down to the bottom and it should say "Official". Without using this method above the system will say "Custom".

[Q] New phone rooting with Towelroot

Hey guys,
I apologize in advance for asking a question that's been asked probably hundreds of times, however everyone has a unique situation and I really don't have the time to read through all the pages to not get all of my questions answered.
I just got a new phone and i'd really love to root my phone without tripping Knox. I just bought this phone today and it came with the 1ANCH build number.
My questions are:
1) Will towel root work on my phone as is right now?
2) Apparently i'm not supposed to do updates OTA, how do I properly do them without losing root?
3) Are custom roms completely out of the picture if i'd want to keep Knox not tripped?
Thanks guys!
1. Yes towl root works great. I used it on my Galaxy s5.
2. If you do a Ota update you will loose root but after the update. You can just reroot. No big deal.
3. If your worried about tripping knox don't be. I have been flashing Rom since the Motorola Click days. Have sent bricked phones back to Tmobile, Sprint. And never even flashed back to stock. They completely wipe the devices anyways. So you should be good to go. Custom Rom Rock. Enjoy flashing!

You seem to think that your time is more valuable than ours. You'll excuse my brevity, but it seems that I don't have the time to elaborate upon my replies in this thread either.
You can use towel root on any TMobile S5, although some builds require a different procedure. There are myriad threads explaining this in more detail. Many of the same threads explain how to avail yourself of updates without losing root. And it is possible to use a custom recovery without incrementing Knox, although that isn't the norm. Simply writing a custom recovery will give you a 0x1 flag.

You can root now and cancel the update, or let the update happen and follow the instructions in the NE9 update guide. The only thing that's missing in the guide is a link to Odin itself, so here it is for you. Odin is a utility for flashing Samsung firmware. Just make sure you follow the instructions given exactly.

cm security found towelroot?

Ok, so my S4 is still on MDK, and I have been rooted since I got the phone last May, running Hyperdrive.
I recently installed CM Security and CleanMaster for sh*ts and giggles, and CM Security found towelroot on my phone. I did not root using towelroot, so why would it find it? Or is towelroot what CM Security uses to describe any rooted phone?
I don't want to allow them to resolve it if it is gonna break root, but I know for a fact I didn't use towelroot to root the phone originally.
Help please...
Sbreen probably included the towelroot.apk in hyperdrive because safestrap users sometimes have an issue keeping root flashing new roms on 4.4.2, if they don't flash the su.zip with the rom.

I too have this this Question only lil different. I have a Note 3 & I rooted via Kingo. CM security found Towel Root & Fake Id today. I do Not want to lose Root but I read Towel Root is a Security Nightmare because other apps can give there self Root permissions & take over. Again I didn't use towel root I used Kingo, I currently still on 4.3. The only other odd thing is Why I installed CM today. I Recieved 3 Notifications from Google Play today that said I should uninstall Metal Craft Theme for Next Launcher & 2 others by the same person. I uninstalled them & installed CM & this is what CM found. Now I'm not sure what to do because I don't want to Lose Root. Also I wonder what happened with the Theme apps & Google Play. Anyways Any Help is Much Appreciated. Thanks Jason

CM found towel root on Xperia Tx but not on Xperia Z1. Root is more important. Ignore CM for root matters.
The theme app has nothing to do with root so don't see how you'll lose it. As for why, depends on what CM says about it.
What I really want to know is How CM found Towel Root on my Note 3 & I Rooted with Kingo?
Also If I let CM fix the Towel Root security issue Will I lose Root?
Google Play to me I should uninstall the Theme apps so I have already uninstalled them & they are no longer in the Play store. I was just wondering, could they have caused the Fake Id, & Towel Root Security Risks?

Sounds like Kingo implemented TowelRoot in their KingoRoot then. As to CM fixing TowelRoot, I asked that question and the answer is above.
When I Rooted my Note 3 back in March, I don't believe Towel Root even Existed, & if did not Exist then Kingo could not have inserted it into its Root method. The reason I say that is bc when I Rooted my JB Note 3, there was no way to Root Kit Kat & Towel Root Roots Kit Kat. What do you think?

CM updates its detection methods from time to time. I'm guessing it's not a perfect identification of TowelRoot and they're just basing it on close approximation (rooting methods are somewhat similar) rather than outright mis-identification.
Okay, plot twist! I have a s5 that I got from my carrier almost a month ago and it's still stock., I haven't use root. I decided to try the cm security app and it did mention finding towel root. Is it something from the os / normal or it shouldn't find twoelroot?

Take a screenshot of CM Security "finding" towelroot and email to CM Security and ask for their comment. Let us know what they reply.
(Noticed now that this is a s4 forum and i have a s5, hope its okay bc the issue is the same)
The problem is that after i opened it to see what it said about it, i must have pressed something without noticing because now it doesnt find it. I tried removing and installing the app again, but it still doesnt show up now :/ i just hope i havent compromised any possibility of root, especially without tripping knox.
I had the same issue on a unrooted phone.
I installed the suggested app (CM said "Solve this problem -Towelroot- with our CM security app") and the "threat" vanished.
I deleted the CM security app and the Towelroot thingy appeared again.
Honestly, I think it is just a sort of "scam" by CM to force you to install their apps.

There's a way to root every version of software they're released. Since the bootloader is unlocked, all that's needed is to flash a custom recovery, then when TWRP asks you if you want to root, just click yes, and you're done. It'll always be like this unless they lock the bootloader.

No I know that, but Samsung AllShare Cast Dongle does care.. the dongle won't work on a rooted device. I had a Samsung galaxy note 10.1 that I rooted but I used triangle away to reset counter and it then would work. I use my tablet and dongle most nights and my other allshare in my car for my appradio. The S5 and Tab S will be first devices I didn't root
Any news on Knox?
Its been awhile since i rooted my phones and flashed roms. I juat rooted my s5. But i dont believe i installed a custom recovery. In the past i always downloaded rom manager and installed cwm through the app. But it says device not compatible. Or ud download goo manager and install twrp through that app and i dont see the version for my tmobile s5 listed. Can someone help me with flashing a custom recovery. And recommend any stable custom roms i should try out. Also if there is anything i need to be careful of when flashing i dont care about tripping my knox counter. My device isnt warrantied anyway.
