Lenovo P780 and Kit Kat 4.4.2 – Complete Installation and Root Tutorial with download links -
i have written a nice article with proper download links to manually update your Lenovo P780 to Kit Kat. Head over to the link at bottom and taste your piece of Kit Kat !!
Pre Requisites – very important if you are a noob !:
Lenovo P780 4GB or 8 GB version. works for both.
Phone needs to be updated to S_124_ROW firmware. The update to Kit Kat will never succeed if you are any thing below S_124_ROW firmware. Check your phone settings and search for update manually if you still haven’t received it. I got OTA updated.
At least 25% battery charge. You don’t want a brick then ensure you have at least 25% charge on the battery before you start flashing.
External Memory Card. The internal memory will be wiped off. Talking of wipe please backup all your data on the internal phone storage as this will be washed away.
Little patience !
What is good about this :
So far everything works fine. LED works for missed calls and SMS
Battery Life is amazing. It took me 2 full days to drain from 100% to 10% with moderate usage. Always connected to Wifi.
Felt a little lag in UI if using stock vibe UI, changed to Nova launcher for butter smooth operations
All Sensors work. Magnetic sensor too.
What is bad about this :
You tube playback. Sometimes the video and audio is out of sync. However if you play it via browser every things cool.

Got updated to S221_ROW - Here is my observation after using it for 2 full days. -
1. After switching the run time to ART, Phone is much smoother to operate.
2. Battery Back up seems to have increased marginally.
3. Huge improvement in camera section. Macro shots are really awesome.
4. Over all there seems to be a lot of improvement in responsiveness.
5. Higher frame rates in games.
6. In short a great package. Must do it now !!
Got updated to S222_ROW - Here is my first observation after using it for two days (21-Aug-2014) -
1. You tube audio sync issues finally seem to be resolved. Yeiahhhhhhhhhhhh !!
2. Excellent memory optimization. Free available RAM moves up to 500MB
3. Batter endurance good enough.
4. ART run time further improved.
5. Rooting is a hard but this time. You need to use older version of SP flash tools with self made scatter file from MTK droid tool.
6. Removed Lenovo camera. Crap software with lot of footprint here and there. Instead using Camera HD ultra from playstore. great camera package with minimal features and memory footprints.
7. Over all an excellent update package. Recommended for all. :good::good:
Got updated to S223_ROW - What's New and improved (9-September-2014) -
1. User 0 thing in the notification bar is gone.
2. More responsive.
3. Battery endurance just about same.
4. If you find your phone lagging or slow to launch frequently used apps, i suggest go to power manager and disable smart endurance. Doesn't make a lot of difference to Battery backup but does make the phone significantly faster to launch frequent apps.
5. Rooting done via scatter file loaded from S222_ROW and latest version of SP flash tools. Compatible version is TWRP 2.7.1.1
6. I already have removed all the bloatware from phone including Lenovo Camera. Using Nexus Gallery and Camera HD ultra.
7. Much better performance with ART set as runtime in dev options.
Got updated to S226_ROW - What's New and improved (26-September-2014) -
1. UI is now based on Vibe UI 2.0 which is lenovo's answer to MIUI.
2. Although the UI is based in Vibe there is no visual change in how the phone interface looks like.
3. Major improvement in Camera section. Camera can now lock focus even in pitch black darkness.
4. Smoother UI with almost zero lags under normal operation. You might find a little lag while browsing system properties and running apps.
5. Rooting done via scatter file loaded from S226_ROW and latest version of SP flash tools. Compatible version is TWRP 2.7.1.1
6. Battery endurance increased. Make sure you calibrate battery using the built in power manager.
7. You Tube works fine.
8. Also please go to Google Settings and opt out of advertisement section, this will free up a lot of RAM.
9. With all basic apps installed and phone in ready to use condition, i have around 450MB of free RAM. Check the screenshot

it has nothing to do with the country in fact asia and india are very very important for many of the manufacturers i got my off kitkat for note 10.1 few days after europe got it AND an advise kindly dont talk of such thing about country and all it is not apreciated at XDA

It is not the Indian version. India is yet to receive any update. But this works perfectly on Lenovo p780 bought in India. Go ahead and flash it. It's safe. Just make sure your phone is on s_124_row

I suggest you reflash s_119_row via so flash tool. Then check for Ota updates and update to s_123 then again check for Ota updated and update to s_124. Once that's done you simply need to copy the downloaded kitkat update to root of SD card and reboot the phone to recovery. It will update automatically. Let us know how it works.

I'm in the UK and the OTA update has appeared P780_ROW_S220_140722 (722MB) for my stock S124 ROM. Not pulled the trigger yet but I don't understand why you people don't just update OTA instead of downloading.
i am unable to boot into recovery. recovery flash was ok. but when i try to boot into it, it says invalid command. Any other way to toot this device?

the kitkat ota has come u dont need to go in to recovery go in to ur setting then about phone and click on the phone update tab u will get the update download it and it will get installed and enjoy kitkat i got it yesterday and now im on kitkat 4.4.2 :laugh::good::laugh:

Switch off the phone. Open up SP tools. Load the scatter file and then uncheck everything except recovery. Click download then connect your phone to PC. Once the green circle appears disconnect. Now hold the power plus vol up and vol down button together.

So what's the verdict on Kit Kat guys? All good? Everything working fine? Is the LED finally fixed so it works for WhatsApp and Email? The Russian forums say there is an issue with the camera and a fix is expected in the next week or two.
Please post what you think is good and bad about the new update. What about new software? Battery life better than/as good as/worse than 4.2?

How about the cam? anyone know how to fix it? It says cannot access cam. And rooting is a bust that's for sure.
I am rooted. I think sometimes it fails to write recovery.
I didn't like the update. Slx was better.
Apps like hike n some other messengers don't run in background. And become offline. This applies to other apps also which i want continuous running like smart cover.
Dialer shows very small pic of the caller. Security app is worst I have ever used AVG is much better.
Just update with this rom last night..so far everything is ok... I got the old problem.. Sms/whatsapp doest show contact.. Just showing number.. Doest have this problem when im using miui rom..anyone know how to fix this?

I cannot give more information, because my folio is in SAT, but the version number might be "18/02/2011 (2.2.5.0131)". I have no info about changes yet, but I´ve red something about preparation for the new flash player and more utilities.

New update is fantastic, touchscreen is super sensitive, battery lenght really improve, And rotation od screen is super fast and smooth. Flash work perfectly. Really a great update. Finally I can say thanks Toshiba.

Is there support to market place?

I have installed it.
It seems to be more performance in 3D games.
Flash plugin preinstaled, and it can run the flash animation in Toshiba's web page .
It solves some bug about brong accelerometer axis in some games.
But no Android Market, only the same *sigh* Toshiba Market.
The question is whether we can install FolioMod on top of this update or not. For me,it's not worth updating this without DexterMod, which is already very good imo

if you wantt custom mods, you avoid the update!!!!

I confirm that the root of 5.0131 is ok yessssssss !
I'm guessing this updates the recovery kernel, and the recovery kernel is the only place that the recovery kernel is visible from to write? So root access is not enough for a simple way of updating the whole OS partition.

they might have blocked it on the new update as well, making it really hard to get revert.. but on previous editions you can easily write a new recovery.
the partition is visible at partition 7, but this might have changed.
i have not had the luxury to look at the actual update, so what is inside, is for me to find out.. then we get all the nasty details.

basicly the tablets works has it was ment to be i think that toshiba might even suprise everyone by realeasing honeycomb for this tablet in future
When I go to Toshiba Service Station, there is no update available(using Dexters wonderful foliomod). How do I get to see it and if I want to install how do I keep all the wonderful stuff on it already. This is my wifes and not mine so she will get pissed off if she loses everything on it again?

you will need build.prop changes to some games working, and gameloft is still the same as CPU has not changed..

unless it got market, gmail and syncing support, its not like its meant to be yet..
and honeycomb will not appear as display is just 1024x600, so no chance of a google certification for folio100 here, same as with gapps support. so forgot toshiba solving that..
Saw people got honeycomb running on nook color with the same resolution screen... no certification does not mean that is not possible...so we still can have our fingers crossed on that

Just read about the new update and the issues with it. I have my Folio sent in for repair and they always update to the latest firmware before sending back to customer, so it looks like im in deep ****. I know how to use adb and fastboot, use them all the time on my desire hd and my VEGA. Maybe someone could write a good guide on how to flash this old recovery and which of all the rooting procedures that works with the new firmware. I also dont know how to get Folio in fastboot. But if we have a working root we can flash the old recovery or clockwork recovery, is that right? Because if not i might as well throw it away. No use in trying to sell it, no one will buy a useless tablet anyways. HOPING FOR A GUIDE CALLED: HOW TO RESTORE YOUR FOLIO WITH FLASHABLE RECOVERY

Are you sure of this? Because, even I use this setting, but no crash! Please check for any misconfiguration.... And how is the ROM so far? Any better? Are you really satisfied? Thanks....

Unfortunately NO! I have tried porting those but ended in softbrick! I am going to release a more recent version of miui....

So do I Slow down my friend! I am trying hard to find a good kitkat ROM, but nothing available... Everything is buggy or leading to soft brick..... I promise you that as soon as I find a good stable bugless ROM, I will upload one soon! I will be uploading a recent version of MIUI soon.... Thanks man!

Description
Rom for Lenovo P780
base : VIBEUI_V1.5_1423_9_ST_P780_5B7B
Removed all chinese and Lenovo applications whitout camera and gallery.
Added GAPPS, ROOT and some stock apps
This rom is multilanguage, contain about 70 languages.
Install ROM :
- Unpack FlashTools, and Click on Flash_tool.exe
- Select the MT6589_Android_scatter.txt in ROM
- Wait file to be added into Flash Tool
- choose Option->USB Model,click USB Model
–> Choose Option->DA DownLoad All->Speed->High Speed, click High Speed
- choose DA DL All With Check Sum
- Turn off your phone, (push the red reset button)
- "Press F9 (hit Download button)" OR " if upgrade ROM Firmware->Upgrade "
- and connect your phone into the computer via USB data cable.
- The process will start and a red progress bar will appear after color purple, yellow, if no, then have to install the driver from Flash toolSP_Drivers_v1.5 folder
- And green circles display
- Finish !
- You can now safely disconnect your phone and turn it on.

Its awful.
It lags continuously, even though it is supposed to be kitkat. There is a buggy implementation of speech recognition which is NOT google now, as it should be. Even though it is a translated version of the chinese ROM and free of chinese apps, some rough translation problems emerge every now and then. I thought it would feel like proper kitkat but it doesn't. For me its a total fail
At first look seems to be good, but when you get more deep in to the settings and install apps seems yo get more errors,apps that freez, crushes,etc etc.
NOT RECCOMENDET ROM.

Anyone know how to set to use SIM card contacts? Seems like KitKat 4.4 contacts must be from gmail account and will not take from SIM card. I am having different contacts on SIM1 and SIM2 for work and personal and I do not want to merge them and stored at my gmail account. Thanks.

ROM needs a lot of work to be done - Please don't flash
I appreciate the work done by OP but this ROM really needs to be removed from this thread. Feel sorry to neglect the warnings given by previous posts.. I just installed it and removed it within an hour of using it.. For sake of others time and efforts i am provinding the list of bugs found and reason why this ROM needs a lot of improvement.
My Device Details :
Lenovo P780 Indian / Custom S124_ROW / 8GB
Issues with this ROM -
Does not detect SD storage
2G signal not detected only 3G
Plenty of Fc's while installing apps from playstore
Some how Root explorer or any other file manager fails to write on system partition, even though all read write permissions are granted
In short untill further information or any update i suggest all flashing manics to stay away from this.

Flashed #CloudyG3 2 days back. I have LG G2 D02 international Variant. The CloudyG3 rom is great and stable. Everything up until now is working fine for me no crashes. Wifi, NFC, WIfi Hot Spot, Dual Window. all of the things are working great.
I have enable ART and its been great out of all the Battery is the best part, 27 hrs in battery with wifi or 3g data on whole time. my Screen brightness is on 50 , this is the best part even in 50 % percent it has great visibility even out door for me. NO call issues yet, have to see MMS i have not used it, 3g was automatically connected , in my last HKG software version i had to do manually.
Knock Knock Code Works Fine. 4K Video and slow mo Video at HD. Camera is great, great response but not many scene mode , just Auto Intelligent, Magic Focus, Panorama and Dual. Panorama has good detail in it( i think its 10 MP per click) . AI mode works great. Love the magic focus. Remote works as well. FM Radio Working.
I just love the Rom. TWRP via Auto Rec and rooted via #ioroot , Towel Root was not working for me. Hope you find this informative. A big Thanks to the Developer of CloudyG3 , #Cloudyfa at #xda .
Apps i am using, Facebook, yahoo mail, viber, whats app, gmail, Drive, chrome, youtube, maps, lapse it, spotify (it lag a bit), skype, Voip call, imgur. these are the regular apps i use frequently, i have yet to check with the games . Will post again in the performance.
Atuntu gives 32237, check the details on the pics.

Hi, I am sorry , it is bit confusing about posting in Q & A as i just wanted to share my experience of #cloudyG3 rom for the general, as i didnot have a question up until now with any issue. but if you still feel this should be in there then , could you let me know if i should delete this thread and reopen in there or can i move it there. Like i said i do not have any question and since its General thread i picked this one.

Recovery and flashing the rom
Hey,
I used Flashed my LG G2 Via ioroot, you can get the latest version . here is the link for rooting your phone.
You can also use " towel Root" this is a .apk file and easy to use but it didnot work for me. do try though. See this video then i use Autorec to install the TWRP recovery , see the video above for detail.
after which i copied the KK baseband and Cloudy G3 Rom in lg g2 .
Boot into recovery, you can do that via Rom manager, download it and run it , there is a option to boot into recovery and rest again the second video , i would suggest however to clear the Dalvik and cache and system which had not been done in the video for that just go to Cloudyfa's thread for the preocedure as well and most imp BACKUP YOUR STOCK ROM and data via TWRP before installing new rom.
Enjoy your new rom the second video is good or else there are many in youtube as well.. i hope this helps a bit.

Hey I flashed the cloudyg3 v2 and my device is getting heated.It was not so when I was using the stock rom .I need help.
why would this thread even exist?? there are 2 TWO dedicated threads for this, moderators delete this, this forum is confusing as is already.
I thought there was some problems.

Any1 can please tell me how to edit photos using in-built editor? I can't see any option in the gallery
it looks nice and stuff but its not reliable as stock....like in the app tango video chat doenst work on cloudy g3 and that was enough for me to go back to stock .also because of better battery life
I haven't really kept up with either g3 ROM lately. Has any work been done to help with data on the Verizon model? I thought I saw some code, but I really don't have any free time for a bunch of build prop edits haha.

Yes, same question here, I couldn't flash dorimanx kernel after flashing CloudyG3.
This ROM is great indeed.
you flash it just like CloudyG3, from your recovery. if that doesn;t work, try to update or change your reovery.
In other news, i would have kept 2.0, but the battery life is worse than 1.3
Please give me download link for the dorimanx kernel

SO since we have successfully rooted and unlocked the phone
its time to finally optimize the performance and user experience for the phone
so post your suggestions,experiments or tweaks you already know .
so starting off first will obviously be the removal of stock apps and also the crashmonitor.apk
i also use setCPU for screenOFF and gaming profiling and governor switching
I still am not sure which i/o works best, cfq or any else so suggestions are welcome

Greenify for battery optimization!
Also Flashing Xposed and running several mods. I highly recommend Apps Ops Xposed. You can manually select any apps/system apps and prevent them from causing wake locks/alarms and draining battery...
Hey i tried to use a custom bootanimation .. Replaced the file .. Gave permissions.. But it doesn't work...
So can anyone upload the stock bootanimation.. Or any working one if anyone has modified it?

Nope it doesn't break the phone... I deleted it coz it was continuously running in background and eating both ram and cpu
Also even though i change the resolution of the device.. I still can't get acceptable performance in asphalt 8... It still lags... :/ on high settings

Thanks for the info..and yeah this C5 ultra seems not getting to top performance when playing high end game as i play Need For Speed and Asphalt Airborne games as well :crying:

Well since i have rooted my C5 for fews days...from first time,i forgot to clear the (recovery.from.boot.p) and the phone lost the TWRP recovery on first time..and then i try to reformat and reroot again but this time i went in to system/ and clear the (recovery.from.boot.p) and flash supersu ver 2.66 (not provided by Bigrammy.It went smooth on few trys without any problem and i can reboot to recovery mode...but after i install busybox,the recovery become lost.At first i thought is the superSU not compatible with our device C5..and i went again to reformat and unlock bootloader and flash the recovery once more.....and the conclusion is the recovery won't stick as it seems to be after flashing.
It sticks for me... Try reflashing and repeating the steps?

Well..i now trying the last time to unlock my bootloader and flash the fotakernel ans supersu v.2.52 from bigrammy..hopes everything went smooth.....
EDIT : Finally..i find out the culprit behind disabling the recovery mode on our C5 ultra...is not busybox thats trigger is in the setting (activate the find my device setting!!)...Damn sony :victory::victory::victory:

Seems that HK themer is for older sony devices and some more our devices chipset is mediatek..quite hard to theme i think
I even downloaded the xperia themer from sony dev world.. It offers very basic theming.. So it's also a no go...
Anyway.. Any luck increasing the performance?

well..i'm recently using the tweak mode by Paget96 called L Speed V4.3.3 Vector.Seems quite good with that but need to tweaks to your like..maybe u need to goto the thread and give it a try (http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/software-hacking/tweak-l-speed-v1-0-02-02-2015-t3020138)

Well it's not better than Android M but still alot fixes can be expected from android 5.0 to 5.1

Me too. I'm with version 5.0, rooted and will not bother updating until Marshmallow 6.0 is released & ROOTED!
Until then I'd rather have 5.0 rooted than 5.1 unrooted. I have many apps requiring root and also use Xposed. I cannot live without root.
