[Q] USB Mass Storage (UMS) on Transformer Prime / Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS)

Hi!
I know, that this question has been asked many times, so I'll try to formulate it a little different. I know, that Google wants to abandon USB Mass Storage (UMS) with Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) and focus on MTP / PTP.
This is however a pain in the @ss for most users. Since the Transformer Prime (TF-201) has only 1 partition, which can not be "exported" via UMS - because it has the system on it - would it be possible to modify ICS so, that the internal storage will be partitioned? Let's say 5GB for ICS and Apps, the rest on a separate partition. And the second partition could act like an "SD Card", like it's on most phones?
Would this somehow be possible?
I prefer UMS over MTP/PTP, since the latter 2 are not usable on Linux, and even in Windows Total Commander does not show the MTP/PTP devices (no official support, no plugins that work...) and I'm "forced" to use Windows Explorer
Thats what i though too when i connected my prime to the pc.
Was expecting to connect it in UMS.
Usually partitions are defined by the bootloader, so this would need a bootloader edit which nobody really wants to try due to the lack of nvflash access
Would it be possible with root?

No, because UMS would require having an actual "sdcard" partition on the device, and this is not the case. As Diamondback said, to change the partitioning of the storage would require full bootloader access which is not possible without the likes of nvflash.
Personally I think you are better to figure out a way to use the MTP. I use Linux so ?I know what a pain it is, but for the very occasional times I need to access sdcard from my PC MTP works "well enough".
Android 4.0 Compatibility Definition at 7.6.2. Application Shared Storage says
Regardless of the form of shared storage used, device implementations MUST provide some mechanism to access the contents of shared storage from a host computer, such as USB mass storage (UMS) or Media Transfer Protocol (MTP). Device implementations MAY use USB mass storage, but SHOULD use Media Transfer Protocol.

I read that as saying the method used is down to the developer. I think if mtp was required then the word "MUST" would be used and "SHOULD" is "do this unless there are valid reasons not to do it"

I don't think it is down to the "developer" as in the ROM chef. Your quote clearly says "Device implementations" - i.e. the way the device is set up. So, a device manufacturer who is creating an ICS device could either configure the device with a separate partition or card for /sdcard and use UMS or they have a single shared partition and use MTP.
The problem with UMS as I understand it is that it requires a dedicated partition, and when that partition is mounted on the host PC, it cannot be accessible to Android (remember all the issues with widgets which were installed on the sdcard on previous android versions not working ?).
The MTP method, on the other hand, does not have this restriction and also allows the dynamic sharing of a single partition between /data and /sdcard which makes much more efficient use of available storage.
So basically this was a design decision which the manufacturer made at design time. In order for a ROM developer to change that, they would need access to be able to split the current /data partition into two chunks: one for /data and one for /sdcard. That capability does not exist with the Prime.
Then again, I could be totally wrong
barryflanagan: Quite right in what you say. It's such an easy mistake to type developer instead of manufacturer!!
Cheers

Hi Guys!
First, thanks for the answers.
Second: "well enough" is not what I would aim for in a high quality and premium device like the TF Prime...
So, if I'm interpreting this right, "we" (the geeks & developers at XDA) need only nvflash for the Prime. That doesn't sound too hard. Personally I don't know nvflash, or how to get it working on the Prime (I'm not a developer), but since we already have root access and an unlocked bootloader it should be no problem.
I ran into the following site after a quick Google search: http://androidroot.mobi/2011/06/13/nvflash-on-asus-transformer/
I think I'm not alone, when I say, that UMS is better than MTP/PTP. Personally I don't care about a shared storage. When I want to copy music or movies to my phone or tablet I'm prefer the UMS method (umount on device, mount on PC).
<rant>On another note, why I dislike MTP: many years ago I had a Creative Zen Touch (20GB), which used MTP. On 2 out of 3 PC's I could not get it work, no matter what I had done, and even the rare times it worked, I could not copy bigger file (I think 1GB or larger) to the device, the transfer always broke up.
After I got the TF Prime, I was really disappointed to see, that ASUS chose this path too (since it's not mandatory, only recommended - I think some ICS Phones have a partitioned internal storage, where 1 partition can act like an SD card). The first thing that happened to me after I got the Prime: I copied a directory from my work notebook on the TF Prime. After some time I deleted that directory (I used the File Manager that came with the device). Then (after the directory was deleted) I connected the Prime to my home PC (the TF Prime was *never* connected to that PC before), and the first thing I saw, was the previously deleted directory - though I did *not* see the directory in the File Manager anymore! So that's why I'm against MTP/PTP. </rant>

If only it were that simple. Let me know when you have it ready
As for the whole MTP issue, I agree with you but the reality is it ain't going to change any time soon, at least not in the Prime.
The Galaxy Nexus (Google's own flagship device) I think shows the strategy being pursued, which is not only MTP-only, but also has no storage expansion. What Google, Apple and the rest want is to force us all onto the dreaded Cloud and wean us off local storage all together.
BTW, even on the GNex, I am not aware of any ROMs which have implemented UMS, and that phone IS totally unlocked, unlike the Prime.

I've been very frustrated with this issue, but it does make a bit of sense. It sounds like the underlying issue here, going forward, is that what we really need better support across the board. If MTS is going to be the future, it will need to be much more robustly supported on other devices, and we'll need android tools to manage what is available on those devices.
I'm currently looking into other methods of network file access, which will allow me to transfer what I want where I want it, to and from TF201, files of large size and small, with decently high throughput. Running an SFTP server on my tablet looks to be the most likely candidate for what I'm trying to do.
The worst part for me is that MTP volumes are not detected in file recovery programs.. I recently accidentally lost a small lot of pictures and couldn recover them as a result of MTP...

Workaround for ums working on cm10/jb roms

Hi,
I don't know how many u guys have figured it out this workaround yet, but I still see many asking questions to the dev's about when UMS is gonna be incorporated in CM10/AOKP builds...
I have accidently found this neat little trick that enables UMS on CM10/AOKP roms..
Till now I have tried and got it working succesfully on Fusions cm10 kangs and Task/Ktoonez AOKP builds , but I do believe it should work on other cm10/aokp roms too..
So steps are fairly simple and here it goes :
1. Download the UMS 1.0 apk which is used as a TPA by many as a replacement. Many of U might have it , but for those who don't : https://www.dropbox.com/s/8490g42b01255t9/USB Mass Storage for JB.apk
2. Install the app. Open it .. it will take few seconds to get SuperUser permission.. then connect the USB connector and a notication will popup with blue androbot.. touch it and it will turn green to ur UMS will be connected.. Ensure that both internal and external SD are connected and accessible (Imp).
3. Turn off UMS and reboot the phone... Once booted up uninstall the UMS app
Reboot the phone again and then try to connect to USB again.. This time you will get prompted like this : (See screenshot)
4. Now u connect to the PC via UMS , and as always bot turns green.. Voila u have UMS now !!!
I do know some of you might have already been using this , and I don't boast it being a great discovery.. just something worth sharing for the unaware..
Cheers !!!
I wonder where that feature went. It don't matter to me because you can still transfer files including video and music to your phones. Without having to do those steps.
I would also assume you would have to do those steps every time you flash a new ROM or updated your old one. But thanks for the info

Yes.. u can still transfer videos, music etc using MTP.... but in my case MTP was quite iffy... randomly throwing write errors and sometimes only copying partial files..
Also one more issue that I was facing with MTP was , with every new rom install, I was not able to pre-existing files on External SD .. although it showed certain space as full.. it didn't show the contents.
So I researched and finally got this working this way.. using UMS I never have any issues mentioned above.. Thus this solution maybe more beneficial for guys having this issue like me
And to your question - yes u do have to follow this step with every new ROM install..
I believe the reason for getting rid of UMS was to consolidate internal and external memory to a single "drive" and that's why MTP is used. I don't know if that's completely accurate but that was my understanding. But I agree, I'm no fant of MTP.

I have no idea why MTP is implemented instead of UMS and I think u may be right on the money for the reason behind this, but I do know this -
MTP is really pain in the ass. U can't copy two files seperately at one time. Hell u can't even delete one file while copying other. Sure it does pull up both drives under same roof, but for cm10 its quite buggy for less fortunate like me
I hear ya brother
With UMS I had no issues. Now when copying over my music it fails with certain tracks stating the device was disconnected. Only those files though. It even warns me before the transfer that certain media files might not be playable. I accept the warning but if one of my tracks plays, they all should. My whole collection was ripped to mp3 personally using the same codec settings for all.
Currently on the CM10 2012.09.24 nightly.

MTP allows the filesystem to be changed without unmounting it from the operating system. This allows phone apps and processes that use any resources on the volume to continue to use them. With UMS, the volume is unmounted and mounted via USB to the computer. Another 'feature' of MTP is that it doesn't have to be removed like UMS. Since UMS mounts as a USB volume and most operating systems implement some form of write-caching with normal volumes, even though a copy operation 'completes', it may be cached, and not actually have completed copying data.
In Windows, removing the device via the tray icon tells Windows to finish any operations it has pending, close open files, and unmount the filesystem. If you remove the device before doing these things, you CAN get corrupted data. From my experience, this rarely happened, and never with small files. Then you get that annoying dialog every time you reconnect the device that the volume needs scanning, blah, blah...

this is already implemented in cm10 you could simply just go to Settings > Storage > hit Menu > select either mtp, mass storage or ptp Connection. what this app do is just to activate the usb mass storage mode. It is already incorporated in cm10. cheers

Strange, it appears to have been left out of Taks's AOKP 9/24 release. Was that added to CM10 recently?

Disclaimer: I have no knowledge of AOSP roms, or of the application in the OP. That being said...
File transfer behavior is governed by the system property /data/property/persist.sys.usb.config. This is a text file containing a single string. The settings are "mass_storage,adb" or "mtp, adb". Since this is a system file, it is necessary for the phone to be rooted, and then this file can be edited using a root file explorer. Change the text in the file to mtp,adb (without spaces), save the file, and reboot the phone. UMS, or USB Mass Storage is the first one. This is true for Samsung firmware.

how i can do that ?....i want recover my picture... but the pc porgram need as usb mass storage not Mtp
I'm guessing you want to recover a deleted image from your Tab? If this is the case then your best solution is to root our device first and then use this undelete program created by ftgg99.
If you load a custom ROM, you will more than likely lose the picture you want to restore.
Good Luck.

[Q] PTP the whole sdcard

Hi xda,
I got my Nexus 4 last week. I'm really happy with it and paranoid-android except for one missing feature. The good old USB-Connection. I've read a lot of articles and post and I know the reason is that it is physically impossible to mount only a part of a partition.
MTP is also no use for me because it doesn't work on any Linux I've tried without installing and configuring it. What does work is the PTP-Connection. The only disadvantage I see is that I can only access the DCIM folder on the emulated sdcard. Wouldn't it be possible to modify the PTP-Connection so that I can access the whole sdcard?
Of course I'm very interested in other solutions too if there are any...
kind regards & thanks in advance
Hubi
no one?
It really pisses me off....
I want to mount my sdcard from a linux systems without root... putting everything into the DCIM folder isn't really a nice solution...
Why didn't android think of linux-users ???
cheers

Is it possible to enable UMS on LG G5?

Hi,
I really don't like MTP. It's slow and you need to wait for download file to computer to open it. A few years ago I had LG P760 and there was a mod to enable UMS (i remember it was Android 4.x - probably Jelly Bean).
So my question: Is it possible to enable UMS on Android Nougat or Android Marshmallow on ours G5? My model is H850 with unlocked bootloader and rooted system.
maybe this app could help ->https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/app-universal-mass-storage-enabler-beta-t3240097
read here too -> https://iwf1.com/how-to-mount-android-device-as-usb-mass-storage-ums/
please report!
could not try because my device is not rooted
Yeah, i know this app but it only mount external_SD as UMS. Any chance to use Internal Memory and External SD memory as UMS? I searched a little and seams to be hard or even not possible
because we are using systems >Android 4, i know no other way to get back UMS possibility. As i read, there was a way to edit build.prop or system.ini to get this feature back. But this was possible for lg g3. Don’t know, if this will be possible for MM and Nougat too! For internal mem, i never saw before!
see here
-> https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2350542&page=3
-> https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/general/scripts-lg-g3-usb-mass-storage-enabler-t3128859
-> http://www.modaco.com/forums/topic/...evice-mtp-how-to-go-back-to-usb-mass-storage/
BTW:
But there is a way to get "adoptable storage"
For this feature, you can edit build.prob on rooted devices. You have to change ro.lge.adoptable_storage from „false“ to „true“.Save build.prop and chage permission chmod 644 /system/build.prop. After reboot, you should see the new feature at setup/mem&usb
maybe this is all bull****, than please excuse me! I’m not familiar with this problem!
Adoptable storage and UMS are not working together. For now mounting external_SD as UMS must be enough for me. Thanks for reply
