You either need to install the Froyo update (since moving apps to the SD started as a default feature in Froyo) or root your device.

Use the app to transfer whichever apps you want to the new partition. Also set it to automatically link new apps to the sd partition, if that's what you want.
If you're having trouble, just Google it. There are hundreds of guides for using Link2SD, and thousands covering all kinds of ways to move apps to the sd card. Here's one to try.
Hi
I am trying to load Angry Birds Go on to my sons Nook HD.
I started following instruction on Barnes and Noble site re sideloading apps. Was going fine until I tried recognising device from command prompt
android update adb
adb kill-server
adb start-server
adb devices
seemed to run fine but just didn't show any devices at the end. It is visible however in device manager on my pc therefore I wondered whether I could just carry on regardless? I know there are drivers on barnes and noble developer website, but I need to register to get these - and to register I need a US bank account and tax code - I'm in the UK....
My second problem is the instructions I was following were for .apk files and I've realised Angry Birds Go is an .obb file.
So, can anyone help me with installing the way I have started, or is there another way to get it on his tablet (and save a lot of tears!!)
My pc runs windows 8 (64bit)
Thanks

You can get the USB driver for adb from the first post in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1994129
You also need the INI file with the one line in it (documented in the thread above as well as the B&N site). To install the driver in Win 8, you have to jump thru some hoops to be able to install an unsigned driver (documented on the B&N site).

Why not just use astro file manager or something similar and just drop the apk onto the internal storage? You can pull the apk from another device that's rooted. You're making the process harder than it is.
Thank you both for your answers, but now I am confused how best to achieve what I want. As you will no doubt be able to tell I am a novice with an interest in learning more. I have stayed away from rooting as everything I read says this isn't for novices! I am happy to do this though if I can back-up first which your thread points me to sherip. If I am pulling the .apk from another device it would be my galaxy s3 - though this is not rooted.
For the moment all I want to do is get the game onto my sons nook hd - I won't be messing about with any other changes or programs I don't need to make. (Once this is achieved I plan to buy a second hand tablet and start experimenting with it).
If anyone can tell me the simplest and least risky way to do this I would be most grateful.
Apologies if this seems so simple to everyone else

Yes - its says that it is not compatible with my device.
Had same message for my friends Nexus 7 but just downloaded from Amazon appstore after allowing downloads from unknown sources. There isn't a checkbox for doing this on the nook.

OK, getting the Amazon app store installed and installing apps from it is not hard at all, even for an unrooted stock Nook. See the first post in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2062613 and look for the parts about making a CWM disk and enabling unknown sources. You will need a micro SD card that can be used to boot the Nook. The ones that work best are Sandisk class 4. Once you have unknown sources enabled you can remove the card and reboot the Nook. After that just download the apk for the Amazon app store and install it. Might want to install ES File Explorer from Google Play, you could use it to browse to the Amazon apk and easily click to install it.

Not sure about the message, but I can say that backups are stored on the SD card so there must be enough room for it. The card itself probably needs to be 4gb or larger and depending on how you made the CWM card you might need to adjust the size of the 1st partition of the card with partition managing software on the PC. That would only apply if you burned an image to make the card. Would need a lot more info on exactly what you've done if that doesn't help.

It's a 16gb card so should be enough space. (in fact have tried two different 16gb cards and get same message for both).
I followed 'new procedure' instructions on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2062613 to make CWM card without burning image - it also specifically says not to create partition on disk.
I guess I need to go back and try the old way...

Did you use the files from NookHD-bootable-CWM-6027-for-emmc-stock-BOOTFILES-r3-(02.13.13).rar?
16gb is pretty big if you will keep the card for this purpose. If you do the old way of burning an image, you will as I said before need to resize the partition to have access to all the space.
I did locate one message in the other thread with your error message in CWM and he was also using a large card (32gb). It worked for him when he used the 4gb image file. Obviously a lot space lost. I've previously burned the 4gb image to an 8gb card and resized the partition. I never saw your error.

If you are just wanting to flash the Enable Unknown Sources zip, you do not need to back up first. The zip just modifies a hidden setting and does not really modify stock.

Seems the card size was the problem. I created a partition, and as an 8gb card everything worked as it should.
Got Amazon app downloaded, however Angry Birds Go still wouldn't download! Going to go back to the sideloading option and try that.
Thank you for you help though - all part of my learning curve

FYI I was able to install Angry Birds Go via Amazon on my HD+ in my CM 11 environment. The app is exceptionally large (over 100 MB) and no doubt needs lots of memory. After a few initial crashes it seems to be running OK, tho my skill in the game is very poor. I use verygreen's unofficial CM 11 release booting from a 16gb SD card. Unfortunately I don't see a similar setup available for the HD. There is however a setup to replace the Nook OS with CM 11 on the internal storage EMMC area of the HD. See the first post in verygreen CM 11 thread in the Android Development section if interested.

Rooting in itself is fairly novice-friendly, there are many wonderful guides in the development forum. Using root access to make changes is where you can run into trouble if you aren't careful. You CAN brick a device, but pulling/installing .apk files isn't likely to do so.
The simplest way to do what you want would be to Google search for the .apk you want, download it, and use a root-capable file manager. (Lots of them available in the PlayStore) to move it to the internal storage as per c0ldburn3r's post above.
Good luck and happy learning!

Please tell me the way to move this game to SD card everybody !
I installed Android Lollipop on my Z Ultra GPE (Stock version via OTA) and tried to use External SD card by using 3rd-party apps which say "Lollipop supported" (e.g., ES file manager, Root explorer, Solid explorer, etc.)
Issue is, I could not grant the permission for accessing External SD card to these 3rd-party apps - when I tried to do it, the windows for choosing Internal/External storage (for granting access permission) only showed the device's Internal storage, so it was impossible to grant an access permission of external SD card to the app.
Could anyone help me on this issue?
I suggest that if it is intended by Google, all other GPE devices will not be able to access to External SD card even in Android Lollipop.
I've been trying to solve a similar question with the G Pad GPE. I think I've figured it out. With Lollipop, developers can now add an API to their application that allows the user (you or I) to allow SD card access. So, first thing, apps need to update to carry this API. This is something that we need to wait on our developers for. You may already know all this.
With ES, I can access my SD Card. The app poorly explained how to do it. If you navigate to the SD Card in ES (Storage → SD Card 1), try to add a folder. The native File Explorer app in lollipop should open, then choose the 3 dot settings button at the top. Lastly, choose to show the SD Card.
This may not answer your question, and I'm pretty sure the best answer is that SD Card support still sucks. Is this helpful?

Interesting... According to your experience, Lollipop's native file explorer recognizes external SD card in the case of G Pad 8.3 GPE.
The core issue of my trouble is, Lollipop's native file explorer (from Z Ultra GPE) cannot detect external SD card therefore I am not able to give any permission to apps which request write permission for the external SD card.
Currently I am using a workaround (search for “Write files to SD card without root- Kitkat and Lollipop” on Youtube) which exploits Android apps' default write permission on a device’s external SD (sdcard1\android\data\appname\) but this trick may have a danger of losing data when initializing the device.
I hope that Sony will fix this issue in the (probably) upcoming 5.01 update for Z Ultra GPE but...(Sigh)

Although Google does the most part of it, manufacturers still play a major role in providing updates for GPE devices.
For example, Samsung has not released Lollipop updates for its Galaxy S4 GPE edition although Galaxy S5 already received its Lollipop update (also almost all other GPE devices from different manufacturers).
In addition, Z Ultra GPE contains some Sony-only features - X-reality and Clear Audio. Because Sony needs to customize updates for Z Ultra GPE to include these features, I suspect that this might be the origin of the issue.
(Albeit my Z Ultra GPE's TA partition has already long gone without a backup during my attempts to downgrade from 4.4.4 to 4.4.2...:crying
Confirmed for Samsung Galaxy S4 GPE
I have the same issue with my Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition. I've logged an issue with Solid Explorer (a 3rd party app which attempts to request the SD card access permission). A few other users have confirmed the same issue. I'd only heard of this being an issue on the S4 GPE but it looks like it's at least also happening on the XPeria Z Ultra GPE. So fret not, you're not crazy... I've seen the issue exactly as you've described. Unfortunately I don't have a solution. I suspect that the fix will have to come from Google.
Received 5.1 OTA, still same

Thanks for the information!
I just received 5.1 OTA for my Z ultra GPE. and... yeah, I still cannot access to my SD card
(Albeit nowadays there are some tricks which allow 3rd-party file managers to write SD card without a root permission - because problem is a PROBLEM!)
SD card or File system issue?
Recently I got a new phone to meet my business needs - and it came with 32GB micro SDHC card as a gift.
Because I was going to use the new phone as my primary phone, I decided to swap the SD card which I was using with my Z ultra GPE (64GB SDXC) and this new 32GB card.
Surprisingly, I was able to grant a write permission to any 3rd party app with this new 32GB SDHC card inserted in Z ultra GPE. On the other hand, my new phone could not 'detect' the 64GB SDXC card, like I kept writing down on this thread.
More interesting thing was, after my new phone got an OTA update (yeah this is a brand-new phone) few days after I bought the phone, it suddenly started to recognize 64GB SDXC card.
I still do not know what caused this issue, however, my speculation is there may be a compatibility issue between Android 5.xx and some brands' SDXC cards.
Hi,
First of all : HAPPY NEW YEAR to all of you reading this thread !
To start the new year 2015, I have one question regarding my Z2 Tablet.
I was really enjoying it until this morning. For the new year, Amazon offered some free apps of some interest to me. So I wanted to install them... and ran short of memory.
No matter, I decided to move the Apps to my 64GB SD Card...
To my surprise, I discovered that it is now impossible.
Every app I tried doesn't work...
Is there a way to move apps to the SD card and run them from there ?
Thanks a lot for your answers...
Regards.
Yes I have the same problem, what I did is:
1) sdfix so that all programs can use sdcard
2) I use foldermount, with this app you can create and the move any folder to the SD but the game or the app will never realize this because foldermount mount the app program directly to the sdcard. Foldermount require root and if you use the paid version it show a list of apps and their folder and everything is done automatically.

u should have root access to since Android 4 to move apps to sdcard and use some apps like folder-mount.
it means you cannot do it in normal way so first root ur device and then try...
:good:
Hi Guys,
Thanks for your answers...
I should have tyold that my Tablet is rooted... and I even unlocked the BL and installed a custom ROM (Carbon).
This is the config I have on my Z2 Smartphone and this allows me to move the Apps to the SD Card without a problem...
I would like to stress that my older LG GPad 8.3 rooted and with CandyKAT installed allows me to move apps to the SD card without a single problem.
So why the hell doesn't Sony allow that too ?
Obviously it is because of some weird "Emulated external (or internal) storage" garbage...
But that does not work on the Z2 Tablet
I then applied the permissions on the SD Card with SDCard Fix (from JRummy).
And then ran "Folder-Mount"...
But probably did something wrong as every app was then unusable
Will try to figure it out... but if I can't do it, then I think I will resell the Z2 Tablet and buy another tablet, but will make sure I can do it with that one...
Yes, I know I can move media to my SD Card... but the space is mostly used by my Apps...
Regards.
FRED

This is easy fix or more like workaround for KitKat and Lollipop firmwares when some of your apps can´t write to external sd card. It add one line to "platform.xml" file. This is flashable zip -file via custom recovery. It can also be installed manually by unzipping file, moving it to correct folder and setting permissions to 644 and reboot.
Backup is recommended.
I flashed the first zip and I still get error when trying to play hearthstone while its on my external SD card

Sorry for the late answer. How much do you have free space? Do you have problems with other apps too?
You could try with this app to move game data to external sd card: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.devasque.fmount
However I try that game and it install its data just fine to mine external sd card without any help of FolderMount -app. If we really want to know what is wrong we need logcat.

My best bet is that even installed on externad sd card this game need much free space from your internal memory (around 1 gb). You can reduce that with FolderMount app (which is little tricky to use) but you need to install the game first before you can do that. So remove (or delete) whatever stuff from internal memory to your external sd card, install the game and it should work just fine.

Hi guys
I just installed Cyanogen OS CM12.1 nightly 20160203 to my Xperia Z2 tablet SGP521 (the one with LTE)
after i thinkering with it for a while, i just realized that there isn't any microSD installed
so i pulled out the card and try to figure out what is wrong
I googled and find some answers but none of them is working for me
I tried to change the filesystem format to FAT32 with 3 different programs (acronis disk director, ease us partition magic, and dos version formater) and none of them is working.
my card is a exFAT file system
I'm very sure that my card is not a fake one (it is a sandisk ultra 64 gb microsdxc class 1)
I can read it from the card reader and it shows all the files inside but i cannot write to it and it not showing in my tablet
Any solutions to this ?

Sorry to hear. You can try to write your sdcard with other card reader but your symptoms indicate that your card might be dying. Known issue with SanDisk cards.

I know this is very old thread but I had to reactivate my old Z2 tablet and I got a few questions and I know you're the expert on this tablet around here. These questions are close to topic so I think ok to reply here I hope. This was my wifes tablet for very short period before she stuck it in a drawer and left it many years ago. I have the rooted .291 MM firmware and I believe that's the latest for this tablet. Anyway, I can't access an sd card or usb stick thru the micro usb host adapter. The internal micro sd card slot works fine so either I've already edited the platform.xml or don't need to for MM I can't remember and I can't even remember where to find the file to check it. My root explorers can see the usb host drive but then show nothing inside. I've tried dozens of cards and sticks and the host cable works fine on my samsung galaxy s7 phone. Is there a setting I'm missing or does the z2 tablet just not able to use host usb. Thanks for any help.

If I understand correctly what you are trying to do, Z2 tablet dosen´t support USB OTG to connect external flash drives or hard drives. How ever if you install program like "USB Media Explorer" or similar from Play Store, it should work. Even for NTFS volumes with "Microsoft NTFS USB Driver by Paragon Sofware". Hope this answer your question.

Thanks kulvertti for replying to this old thread, but no go on the media explorer. So now I've tried about 12 file managers and explorers and most of them with superuser access and most all of them can see the external usb drive, but they can't access it....it just shows basically nothing when opened. Strangest thing ever! 'File Commander' is closest one so far to work, but what it does when I click on the drive is say I need to enable some permissions, which I can't find anywhere, and when I say 'ok' it opens the drive and shows the folders and files in some sort of internal popup window, but then I can't open any of the actual files on the drive shown in that window. So it turns out to be useless as well. I don't think it's an MM problem as my samsung galaxy s7 phone has the same software....android 6.0.1 so exactly same, pretty old I know. I think it must be sony limitation maybe??? Thanks again for the help though.

That's weird. You sure you give apps correct permissions? For me those apps work just fine.
Yes it does seem like a permissions thing but all those apps have permission to storage and that's all I can find to give them anyway, besides root which only several of them request superuser. I think I used to have this problem with some apps back in the day just trying to access internal 2nd microsd card but it was always a permission wasn't activated when installed, but this is something different because these file manager apps can see the external drive but cant see or access any files, it just shows blank. It does seem like its just a setting though. Do I need to add this platform.xml for MM .291, I didn't think I did but maybe?
Just to double check....you can stick a microusb cable with a female regular usb on other end....otg cable I think they're called, into the top slot on tablet and then connect the female end to a usb thumb drive with movies or music and access it thru these file managers and play the content?
Wish I could....It would be much easier and more flexible switching between media content.
Thanks again for your help.

Sorry to hear. At the moment I have pure stock firmware without root or TWRP. For me usb otg work just fine as you discribe without anything else than mentioned app. Whish I could help more but I can't rebroduce the problem.

No worries...at least i can use the microsd card slot on the top of the tablet to store and switch up content. I just have a lot of thumb drives and full size sd cards to use so i thought otg was way to go and also the way i used my tablet s, now broken, when traveling. I also didnt want to purchase any microsd cards if i didnt need to. Thanks again though.

Sorry to bother again kulvertti but I made a minor break thru....I discovered that if I go into Settings/Storage I can see all three drives on the Z2 tablet. The main internal drive, the microsd card slot drive, and now I also see the microusb otg cable to usb thumb drive drive.....the missing drive if that makes sense. I can also play the content on each drive with whatever app I choose, including video files off the OTG....directly from the Settings/Storage. So something is very close, but still can't get these various file explorers to work. I have ESfile explorer pro, File Commander, The OTG file manager you recommended, root essentials, root explorer, etc....Plus basically none of my apps can use the otg drive, like utorrent, titanium backup, quikedit, etc....to name a few....they can all see the drive, they just cant access it. It's like a null drive. It shows empty.
Although one other thing about File Commander.....it show the drive, but basically empty, and when I click it a little hint window pops up telling me to 'please choose the root directory of your storage (or external SD card) to grant permissions to operate'......and then there is four little pictures with red circled items and red text explaining what I'm suppose to do, which takes a magnifying glass to read, but then I have none of those items it shows in any of my apps to do that from, not even in the settings do I see those picks anywhere, etc....
It's got to be something simple I think. Somethings just not set correctly. What the hell could it be?
If you can think of anything please do, I appreciate the help. Thanks again.

Sorry for the late reply. It's summer vacation time and I am not beeing at home. But your question. I'm using "X-plore" file explorer and with mentioned apps it's working just fine. I can do what ever I want to with files on usb drive.
